On their plans for introducing the Mio Healthcare Tablet range to the Middle East market Julian Stone said: “The Middle East is a key target market for Mio, and has generated great interest in the Mio range
There is great potential in the Middle East for the quick uptake of this cutting-edge technology as new hospitals being built are designed to be paper light and use the latest EMR systems. With no legacy of heavy paperwork as there is in European hospitals, adoption of new technologies can by much quicker. We have just signed a cooperation agreement in GCC, and are looking for relevant partners and hospitals in the Middle East region.

Initiation of Clinical Research in the Middle East
Author: Dr. Ramzieh Sabbah, Head of Medical and Regulatory Writing, ClinServ International-ClinGroup Holding
The global landscape for clinical trials has continued to evolve and change over the last ten years. One of the biggest changes has been the shift towards the emerging markets.
Why the Middle East? Rising drug-development costs and pressing needs to advance drugs quickly are pushing global pharmaceutical companies to look for emerging markets to The Middle East region is gener- conduct clinical trials. The attractions of the Middle East as a location for clinical research include patient diversity, worldclass medical facilities, cost advantages and favorable infrastructure. Indeed multinational CROs think the region is about to experience a surge in clinical trials. Facts As of Oct. 11, 2011, 1,767 studies were underway in the 14 counNovember 2015| 8

That’s 1.5% of the 114,546 trials registered across the globe, still small yet up significantly from the 2006 to 2009 period, when there were just 400 trials in the region. While the pharmaceutical industry projects 4% of its sales will come from the region, only 0.4% of trial participants currently come from the Middle East, which has a population of 280 million. According to ClinicalTrials.gov, Turkey has 874 trials, followed by Iran with 379, Saudi Arabia with 169 and Lebanon with 130. Advantages of the Middle East Low Cost Since the Middle East countries are still in the emerging phase as far as clinical research is concerned, the costs for conducting clinical trials are not as high as in the United States and Europe. This is an advantage as most global companies are currently seeking to limit costs of clinical trials.
The Middle East has a predominantly young population compared to an ageing population in the West. It is one of the fastest growing regions in the world, and expected to grow in double digits in the next few years, offering a wide range of patients and specific disease areas. The Middle East has a unique patient population with high disease prevalence. In fact, it has more than 500 rare genetic disorders, high prevalence of hepatitis, diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, growing cancer incidence and asthma.

The volatile nature of the region is an important topic and managing trials during political unrest is a concern some view as a red flag but which shouldn’t be. Population Meeting patient recruitment and enrolment targets is the number one problem in clinical research globally, which is slowing down drug development. To speed up drug development, pharmaceutical companies should consider what the Middle East can offer - access to large patient pools, as well as local and international expertise. Getting a head start in the Middle East markets, with a population of over 300 million and counting, could also prove to be a strategic advantage. www.middleeasthospital.com

“Connected Minds” - The pervasive and
significant impact it is having on all aspects of healthcare human resources.
By Brian de Francesca
Connected Minds is allowing us to provide more, better care, with fewer people in more locations. This is not about “replacing doctors” with computers, but increasing access to care, and augmenting a caregiver’s capacity and ability with appropriate intelligent technical support. In some countries, compensation constitutes 60% of the total cost of hospital budgets.
Compensation for the hospital workforce, the largest majority of who are nurses, has grown faster than compensation in non-health sectors since the late 90s. There is a critical need to optimize healthcare workers while at the same time increasing access and patient safety. “Connecting minds” provides a large part of the solution. www.middleeasthospital.com
How exactly can “connected minds” meet the human resources demand in healthcare? First, we must have a proper understanding of what connected minds means in our world today. “Connectedness” today spans much broader and deeper than a two-way voice conversation a nurse has with a patient asking advice over a healthcare hotline. Thanks to the internet, people today have the ability to connect and share information with not just one, but multiple parties simultaneously and continually. The effect of such networked, collaborative “connectedness” is exponential. It is not only the connecting of one to one, or one to many, but many to many and the whole is truly greater than the sum of its parts. Connected people get more, better, answers, faster, than if working alone. And regarding “minds.” These are no longer just the brains in our heads, but powerful thinking machine (cognitive computers) that have access to vast digital warehouses of information – everywhere, all of the time. Realizing this value is not as simple as just “plugging” everything and everyone together. Every “connected mind,” both human and synthetic, must be networked intelligently. They must connect in a way that facilitates information transfer between networked people (patient with mobile phone OR nurse at a remote patient monitoring center), devices (ie. Bluetooth enabled glucometers and weight scales) and data in an intentional and intelligent manner, This will allow us to do more, better, faster, less expensively and to do it everywhere, all of the time, for more people. November 2015 | 12
Middle East Hospital magazine
Expert column It will make healthcare safer as well. Healthcare quality and safety improves, not only because of the primary benefit of collaborative problem solving, but through continual peer review and public visibility. The connecting of minds is the tremendous value to be found at the heart of the digitalization of medicine. How will connected minds affect healthcare as we know it today? It will affect how and where hospitals are built, how healthcare systems are staffed, who becomes doctors, where when and how long that will take. The definition of a doctor will change from a relatively low number of elite holders of skills and knowledge, to a larger number of caregivers who have been trained to take-on physician functions.
These changes will not happen overnight, just as we did not all start doing most of our shopping, banking and virtual socializing, overnight. But, it is undeniably in process and will not go backwards to an insulated, analogue world. It will alter career paths and affect the development master plans; education will become more effective, more accessible. I t is not a binary question, “Will all of “this” be connected or not?” but rather to what degree, how and when will all of this take place. To get the most out of “connected minds in healthcare”, it must be planned for strategically. This is the future of medicine, and it is happening all around us right now.

MEDICA 2015 Global medtech industry meets in Düsseldorf Every November, MedTech manufacturers from around the world take advantage of MEDICA to present the entire spectrum of new products, services and solutions devised to increase the efficiency and quality of both in- and out-patient care.
MEDICA 2015, more or less half came to Düsseldorf from abroad. Before the show Joachim Schäfer, Managing Director of organisers Messe Düsseldorf GmbH, has emphasised the importance of Asia and the Middle East to the industry,

rates. These markets still promise lucrative business, without a doubt. In China alone, where about 2,000 new hospitals currently being built or expected to open in the next eight years, the market for medical technology is expected to grow even more rapidly in the years ahead from approx. €12 billion at present. Since there is demand for high quality medical devices, especially in the megacities, the representatives of government institutions and decision-makers from the healthcare sector in China are increasingly looking to Germany November 2015 | 16

MEDICA 2015 and Europe to find industrial partners for upcoming projects.” Mr Schäfer also stressed that the industry has a sound base in Europe and North America, despite recent economic upheaval, “In spite of the pressure on public spending to cut costs even the supposedly saturated markets of the industrialised nations in Europe and North America, are gaining greater prominence again, for a variety of reasons. The total market volume here is still disproportionately higher than in the Asiatic region, with Germany alone accounting to about €8 billion more than the Chinese market. Over and above that, health professionals are very well trained, the level of care is high, the procedure for marketing authorisation is comparatively fast and the "secondary" health services market for self-payers is gaining increasing significance. The increasingly aging patient population is willing to pay a certain proportion of the costs of health care, over and above the standard provision, to boost their quality of life. This willingness to pay depends, however, on making the effectiveness of medical innovations evident.” German Healthcare Export Group In the German Healthcare Export Group (GHE) approx. 50 innovative and strongly growing companies from the area of medical technology have come together to encourage an exchange of their experiences in export business. MEDICA 2015 Brazil pavilion In line with the growing demand for innovative technology, more than 70 per cent of the Brazilian companies producing health equipment are investing in technological research and innovation. As a result of these efforts, exports of high technology products by the medical and electro-medical industries have seen a 34 per cent increase in 2011. This was the highest growth amongst overall health equipment sector for the period. Brazil's health equipment companies have earmarked 3.6 per cent of their revenues to research and development (R&D) in order to maintain their high quality and expand into new markets, ensuring that the country becomes more competitive within the sector. The Brazilian health devices industry brand was launched in the last year's edition of MEDICA and this year, Brazil will arrive in DĂźsseldorf aiming to outdo its results from 2011, when the companies led by ABIMO closed deals to the tune of US$ 22 million. The participation of Brazil's health equipment companies at MEDICA is coordinated by ABIMO, in partnership with Apex-Brasil, with an aim to increase the export of Brazilian products worldwide. The new Model 50GL Bari-atric Gynae Chair has up-rated electronic height ad-justment, able to lift oer-weight and obese patients up to 320kg, from its lowest working height of 40cm, for ease of access, to its upper level of 99cm. MEDICA 2015 the annual meetings of several high-calibre professional medical associations under the “umbrella” of the MEDICA Congress. Particularly noteworthy are the annual congress of the German Society of Computer- and Robot-Assisted Surgery (CURAC) as well as the annual meetings of the German Society for Management and Market Orientation in Medicine, the Foundation of Personalised Medicine (PMS) and the German Scientific Society of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The integration of such sub-congresses attracts new groups of visitors from the medical sector to MEDICA, from which all those involved benefit, not least the exhibitors. This year, as every year, MEDICA will once again host the 35th German Hospital Conference, the leading information and communication platform for decision-makers at German hospitals. As well as current aspects of health policy, the main focus here will be on IT for hospitals, with the programme organised by the “decision-maker factory” (Entscheiderfabrik), which will present examples of best practice for current IT projects in hospitals in the “Health IT” area at MEDICA. Following its successful debut in 2011, the EUROPEAN HOSPITAL CONFERENCE will continue as the event for key decision-makers from European hospitals on a 2-year cycle, returning in 2013 to complement the German Hospital Conference, when it will address forward-looking issues in the field of European hospital policy. www.middleeasthospital.com

Magento eCommerce platform We never recommend bespoke platforms and after working with many different tools we have found one solution to suit our needs and the requirements of our clients. Our ecommerce platform of choice is Magento Commerce which we have been working with since we started over 2.5 years ago. Magento offers flexible, scalable eCommerce solutions designed to
help businesses grow and succeed online. The Magento platform is trusted by more than 150,000 businesses, including some of the world's leading brands. But given my digital marketing background, I wanted to touch on a number of areas where companies can use the Magento Commerce platform to help add value for their customers, improve customer retention rates, increase sales and generally enhance their site’s USP. When we work with a client on the marketing side of things we take a very simple hands on approach based on 5 core ecommerce strategies. 1. Proposition. Getting the site ready and useable for achieving best possible sales results. www.middleeasthospital.com
2. Acquistion. This will involve understanding the client’s budgets and resources and develop their site asa sales channel, i.e. increase the size database, using standard methodologies such as SEO, Pay per Click, email and Affiliate marketing, social media, partnerships and shopping comparison 3. Conversion. Turning more lookers into buyers, via enhanced promotional activity, personalisation, using best practices for checkout and having enhanced content to enable the customer to find out as much as possible. 4. Retention. Providing loyalty schemes, targeted and segmented email campaigns, visible related and cross sell products to provide greater choice. November 2015 | 32

Magento template from either ThemeForest.net or Template Monster, and get your agency to customise it to your requirements.
Given the above, the Magento Commerce platform provides a senior marketer and their team with all of the tools they need to manage their digital channel. Magento is a big platform with a wealth of functionality, which cannot be all covered in this article. I will however detail below how each of the core strategies above fit in with what our clients have asked or required from their digital marketing strategy.
These themes are designed by professional and experienced web designers. Our opinion is very much, ‘why reinvent the wheel’ when there is a fantastic tool out there with a wealth of in built features including, search and review functionality as well as being easy to populate with your own content. What’s more there are a huge amount of extensions or plugins that can be integrated to give your site enhanced functionality at the fraction of cost from a bespoke platform.
Proposition Ensuring your site is follows best practice, in terms of usability, design and content management, is one of the first and vital steps in ensuring your site will be a success. Magento is built on Open Source technology which ensure it is constantly being updated with bug fixes and new functionality as well as following industry standards when it comes to product and category layout, secondary navigation and the checkout funnel. However, if budgets are tight and there is no budget for design then it is easy to purchase a pre designed
Acquisition Getting customers to visit your web site is the first step in a site’s journey in developing a return on investment. One of the most cost effective routes for customer acquisition is search engine optimisation (SEO) with every company wanting their site to be visible on the first page of Google. We prefer the Magento platform, over more bespoke platforms, because it has a wealth of SEO benefits:
www.middleeasthospital.com
• It is built from the ground up to support SEO • search Auto-generating engine friendly URL's, even down to the links in the layered/secondary navigation, • Creates sitemaps for search engine submission as well as for display on site, and a popular search terms page. You can gain further control by using Magento's URL Rewrite tool to specify the exact structure of specific product pages, and take control over the Meta information using Magento's intuitive administration interface. Along with a client’s content and social media strategy, this provides the foundation for great long term search engine results. With the search engine friendly URL's it is also really easy to deep link into content for your pay per click and affiliate marketing campaigns. Conversion Once the customer is on your web site, it is imperative that you get them to do something that is of value, i.e. convert. This in its purest sense is to purchase

Specialist article a product or service but can also be to make contact, ask a question or simply engage with content such as video. However, one of the most common elements clients ask about and require is the ability to set up their own promotional activity without having to ask the agency to set it up or build a bespoke part for the site. Magento has its own built in promotional functionality which enables our clients to improve the site conversion. It is so flexible that you can easily set up a wealth of promotional rules that give a percentage of a specific product or products, buy one get one free options, give discounts for buying certain products, set up free shipping when a customer spends over a certain or simply add give a product a special price. The list is endless and the great thing is, is that they are all tremendously easy to set up. Retention Once your customer has converted there is nothing worse than them not coming back and buying again. The old adage that it is cheaper to retain a customer than get a new one is never more true. A growing trend for ecommerce stores is to have a loyalty programme. We are an official partner of Sweet Tooth Rewards (www.sweetoothrewards.com), a Canadian Software Company which has developed this loyalty scheme integrates into Magento. We have installed this programme on a number of client sites and have seen an incredible response from customers who really value getting their ‘points’ and keep coming back to buy again and again. What makes this programme different is of
the added benefits it provides in terms of customer engagement. You can reward your customers for signing up to a newsletter, setting up an account, referring a friend, liking you on Facebook, you can even give them points on their birthday. So this fabulous tool not only helps retain customers it also goes along way to convert them as well. Another reason why the Magento platform provides our clients with the best possible tools to make their ecommerce store a success and why we choose it over bespoke other ecommerce solutions out there. Analytics Every Digital Marketing Manager/ Director has to be aware of how the site is performing, monitor sales and customers as well as reporting back on a regular basis to their boss. Again, from our experience with our clients, they value the wealth of reporting functionality that Magento provides in terms of viewing sales on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, how many items were sold by number of orders, www.middleeasthospital.com
what are the best sellers, how many new customer accounts have been set up or even the number of abandoned baskets at checkout. These reports, and there are many more, give our customer valuable insights into how their site is performing at a couple of clicks of a button and super quick time. To add further weight to these reports, Google Analytics easily integrates into Magento meaning you have an array of tools at your fingertips ensure your web site generates the best possible return on investment for your business. I hope I have given you an insight as to why JRT Ecommerce recommend Magento, from a technical and marketing perspective. The difficult thing about writing this article was to keep it as short as possible, as there are an incredible amount of features I have not mentioned and also a constant stream of new functionality being added or extensions/plugins being created. From our experience, it is everything your business needs to establish or improve its ecommerce presence and provide your customers with a fabulous buying experience. July/August 2013 | 34

MEDICA 2015 Patients are being included more and more in the supervision and monitoring of their own health or illness. This will have a significant influence on the situation of healthy people, patients, doctors and healthcare facilities. However, “There is no outstanding megatrend in medical IT at present. There are several main currents.” That, in a nutshell, is the market assessment of Bernhard Calmer, Chairman of the German Association for Heath IT (bvitg) and Head of Sales for Siemens Healthcare IT Germany. The trend towards ‘Mobility IT’ continues unabated. “Thanks to ‘mobile computing’ information and communication technology has arrived for the first time at the ‘point-of-care’. It can be used to transmit the data required for making decisions directly to the sickbed or to record the ideas conceived during the course of a visit,” explains Bernhard Calmer. Personalised medicine on the way The area of personalised medicine, pHealth, is also on the rise. “I believe that the personalisation of medicine will increase,” says a confident Bernhard Calmer. But personalization is not restricted to drug treatments, as Calmer goes on to explain: “Currently at Siemens we take about 2,000 to 3,000 images of a normal knee. A computer-aided detection program recommends about 10 to 15 of these images for the doctor to look at. IT can now help doctors to filter out the information they need from the flood of available data.” www.middleeasthospital.com

MEDICA 2015 Knowledge management can help to tailor treatments to the individual patients. But medicine is becoming more individual in the private sphere too. According to Calmer, “Some running shoes can transmit the number of meters run and other parameters to an iPhone app, which can then be added to the personal Facebook Timeline. Users can discuss such vital information among themselves or bring it to their doctor at a later date.” Deutsche Telekom and the Swiss company Quentiq launched their online product ranges at the start of 2012. A free app, a smartphone or other networked devices such as a digital scale or a blood pressure measuring device record customers’ dietary habits, stress situations, sleep phases or fitness activities. A fitness app now offers a selection of sports and calculates how intensive the activity was, based on the measured distance and time. From the point of view of Deutsche Telekom, telemedicine is an on-going trend which was already evident at previous MEDICAs. It is used to cope better with the increasing average age of the population. The company expects to bring a new home emergency call system onto the market in 2013. Contact-free sensors similar to those on the games console “Wii” are used to reliably detect falls and, if necessary, to trigger an alarm, with the smallest possible error rate. In cooperation with the clinics of Lahn-Dill and the Dutch IT company Portavita, Deutsche Telekom has also started a project for the palliative care of outpawww.middleeasthospital.com

Everyone involved in the treatment process can view the web-based file from their Tablet-PCs while they are on the move or from the patient's bedside, and record the treatment measures in it. Deutsche Telekom will present its full range of telemedical applications at MEDICA 2012. Meanwhile, Bernhard Calmer is certain that “If several doctors want to help the same patient, this places specific demands on the information technology. They need the patient file to be mobile. The first solutions to the question of whether and how doctors can view patient files from their smartphones while on house calls will surely be presented in autumn.” A secure telematics infrastructure would, of course, be desirable for many things. With reference to the electronic health card, Calmer remarks that, “If we want to work in networks and to maintain the current standards of medical care in rural areas, then we need telemedicine, and for this we require the kind of secure telematics infrastructure that comes with the introduction of the electronic health market, some of them also have the card.” potential to influence how we deal with medicine at home, in hospitals IT Forum with App Circus and in medical practices. An adjustable warning can draw your attention to an increased risk of pregnancy, if you have skipping or missed taking a pill. Similar applications, especially for complex therapy regimens – i.e. many pills and a complicated schedule that must be followed precisely, for combating HIV for example – could save money for the public health service. According to Amelung, apps like this would therefore be interesting for the health insurance companies. There are of course limits to what can be achieved, with regard to the care of dementia patients for example. Amelung is nonetheless optimistic about the application potential, “Even if apps can only be used by twenty per cent of the population, they would be of benefit to these people. The online technology platform “telemed. net” enables secure mobile access to medical documents from the medical software “ALBIS” and provides an optimized display on the iPhone or iPad.
