4 Tuesday 11 October 2022, 19.30 BRNO PHILHARMONIC Ralph Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis Bohuslav Martinů Cello Concerto Leoš Janáček Jealousy Antonín Dvořák Symphony No. 9 ‘From the New World’ Brno DennisPhilharmonicRussellDavies conductor Laura van der Heijden cello Tickets: £25
There’s something special about the sound of a Czech orchestra playing Czech music – it’s like hearing poetry read with just the right accent. Brno is Janáček’s hometown, so naturally enough the Brno Philharmonic has put his music at the heart of this rare UK concert. And equally naturally, they’re playing the best-loved of all Czech symphonies: Dvořák’s gloriously tuneful musical postcard from the New World. But their chief conductor Dennis Russell Davies is nothing if not an explorer. Prepare to hear a British classic with new ears, and to discover a neglected Czech gem – played by the former BBC Young Musician Laura van der Heijden. middlesbroughtownhall.co.ukNow

Gustav Holst Wind Quintet in A flat major, Op.14 Arthur Bliss
Maybe it’s our national fascination with the weather, but British composers have always had a way with wind instruments. When he wrote his Wind Quintet, Gustav Holst seemed to pull melodies out of the air of the English countryside; Arthur Bliss – a survivor of the trenches – finds dark emotions when a clarinet joins forces with a string quartet. Malcolm Arnold, on the other hand, simply puts five wind players together and throws a party! The RNS’s own players take centre stage in a riot of colour and emotion, and rediscover an exuberant mini-masterpiece by the suffragette composer Ethel Smyth.

With some pieces, you can just feel the sunshine, and when Mendelssohn’s Italian symphony explodes into sunlit, sparkling life, the music itself seems to leap for joy. For Royal Northern Sinfonia principal conductor Dinis Sousa, it’s the perfect complement for the elegant song-and-dance of Haydn’s Cello Concerto, performed today by one of our own – RNS’s principal cellist Steffan Morris. But first, something completely different. What if a visitor from another time – or another world – found some fragments of music by Mozart and tried to fit them together? Schnittke’s mischievous classic sets the mood for a concert filled with fantasy – and fun. Book middlesbroughtownhall.co.ukNow Box Office: 01642 729 729

Pounding with emotion and bursting with unforgettable tunes, Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony is quite simply as romantic as music gets, and it’s a spectacular contrast to Debussy’s dreamy Prélude and the very French flair of SaintSaëns’s glittering Third Violin Concerto.
