2 CLASSICS UP CLOSE

CLASSICS UP CLOSE Here at Middlesbrough Town Hall, we have proudly presented a programme of classical music throughout our 127 year history, and have enjoyed the support of our passionate audiences during that time. Regular attenders of the classical series will know that the refurbishment project, which has led to the temporary closure of the building, is much needed. We are now very much looking forward to being able to reopen in 2018 with a venue which not only provides a home for our programme of international orchestras, but also meets the expectations of contemporary audiences and artists alike. It is an exciting time in the history of the Town Hall, but not without its challenges. One such challenge is how to continue to provide a classical programme without the Main Hall. We are extremely grateful to Middlesbrough Theatre, who have been able to step in to support the programme in this interim period, and to Royal Northern Sinfonia, who continue to offer such wonderful programmes in Middlesbrough. An ensemble of wind players from RNS will present a programme in both Middlesbrough’s Reference Library and Preston Park Museum in October, including works from Mozart alongside Jonathan Dove’s excellent Figures in the Garden. In the new year, the full RNS ensemble will perform a programme of French and English music, including works by Ravel, Rameau, Elgar and Vaughan Williams. This will be followed in March by another full orchestral performance including Mozart Symphony No. 40. Both performances will take place in Middlesbrough Theatre. We continue to be committed to ensuring that classical music is accessible for all ages, and Chaconne Brass will present their family-friendly concert Tubby the Tuba in the Theatre on the 5th February. Finally, our popular programme of Classical Café concerts, which promote local talented musicians looking to explore a career in music, will continue at the Python Gallery. We hope that you enjoy this programme, and would like to thank you for your continued support of classical music in Middlesbrough and the Tees Valley.

Classical Café Now in its fifth consecutive year, this popular concert series presents Classical music in relaxed, informal surroundings and feature local, young classical musicians. Delicious homemade cakes and refreshments are available before each concert. This season’s concerts will all be held at the TP Coffee House, Python Gallery.

CHACONNE BRASS PRESENT

TUBBY THE TUBA & OTHER MUSICAL MARVELS SUNDAY 5TH FEBRUARY MIDDLESBROUGH THEATRE 3.00PM £12.50 ADULT, £10 CONC., £40 FAMILY Tubby the Tuba was made famous by Danny Kaye in a recording released on the Decca Label in 1954, becoming a household favourite and delighting children with its touching story ever since. Tubby’s role in the band is mostly limited to oom-pah, oom-pah but he wishes he could sometimes play the beautiful melodies given to other instruments. Then he meets a new and unusual friend who inspires him to realise his dream. This inspiring story shows that even those of us who are often ignored or taken for granted have much to offer and can all shine. Chaconne Brass Quintet plus percussion have presented shows for children on a regular basis at both London’s South Bank Centre and the Philharmonie in Berlin amongst others, spanning more than 25 years. The evening will be narrated by Emily Stride, who has has most recently appeared in London’s West End in “The Father” and the TV series “The Night Manager”.

7 MOZART - THE MAN REVEALED

ALL-ELECTRIC PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS

MOZART THE MAN REVEALED, BY JOHN SUCHET SATURDAY 4TH MARCH MIDDLESBROUGH THEATRE 7.30PM £15, CONC. £13 In the run-up to the Royal Northern Sinfonia concert on the 8th March, the voice of Classic FM’s weekday mornings delves into the life of the most naturally gifted composer who ever lived, including an insight into the Mozart works to be performed at that concert. Mozart’s story is well-known: Austrian-born with a tyrant of a father who drove him relentlessly, an unhappy marriage to a spendthrift wife, a child-like character ill at ease amid the pomp of the Viennese court, and an early death that robbed the world of genius. Yet only the last is true. John’s passion for, and knowledge of, classical music makes for an inspiring talk, as he uncovers the man behind the many myths. Includes audience Q&A.
