Unity College & Thomas College Launch Online Education Partnership, MBA Scholarship Fund Alliance will give more students access to MBAs, boost economic development in Maine. Thomas College & Unity College have entered into a partnership that will put an MBA within reach of more Maine students and strengthen the marketable job skills of graduates from both colleges through a series of new online courses. The partnership, with significant support from the Unity Foundation, will begin during the fall semester of 2014. Thomas President Laurie Lachance said, "Maine's economy needs workers with advanced business skills. Likewise, business leaders benefit from a solid understanding of physical sciences and environmental sustainability, particularly in Maine where our natural resources are our lifeblood." Unity President Stephen Mulkey stated that given Unity's global focus, with students travelling to study at his institution from across the United States and beyond, providing graduates with broad skills to address the environmental challenges and green entrepreneurial opportunities of the 21st century is critically important. "This partnership is not only good news for Maine, but for the planet," noted Mulkey. Continued on page 6

From the President’s Chair …on the value of volunteerism. Every Taste of Waterville is marked by something unique that happens. This year, the 3 Bowdoin rainstorms and the meatball eating contest Photography will stick out in peoples mind. After all, what’s more memorable than holding an umbrella with one hand and eating with the other as rain runs down into your food? On behalf of the vendors, restaurants and Chamber thank you for your support and perseverance. You make the Taste a fantastic event! As do our volunteers – from those who man our booths and functions such as parking, set up and break down, to those who help Sustain MidMaine with its recycling efforts, volunteers help make this event possible. Special appreciation to all of our sponsors as well. You’re probably wondering who won the restaurant awards: Here are the winners: Best Entrée -18 Below – Fresh Atlantic Salmon Filet The Fresh Atlantic Salmon Filet came to us artfully presented on a bed of local field greens with a homemade cucumber-dill yogurt dressing and a garnish of fresh dill. The generous serving of salmon was perfectly poached and moist and the dill-cucumber yogurt had a delightfully refreshing flavor. The judges loved this healthy, expertly prepared entrée. Best Appetizer – The End Zone – Greek Fries Pub food with flair! The simple addition of feta cheese and seasonings was used to make this easy-to-eat street food stand out and kept us nibbling until they were gone. The judges took note that the End Zone’s entire menu offering was Greek-themed and these fries offered a new twist to an old favorite. Best Soup - Mainely Brews – Lobster Stew Once again, Mainely Brews Lobster Stew did not disappoint. This piping hot pint of stew had large chunks of fresh Maine lobster claw meat and tender new potatoes and the creamy sherry base was silky and flavorful. Extremely satisfying! Best Sandwich/Wrap- MaineGeneral – Fish Tacos Another healthy and unique option from MaineGeneral, these tacos had a generous portion of fish, with an extremely flavorful mixture of freshly chopped cilantro, carrots, and cabbage dressed with lime on a flour tortilla. This offering was healthy, delicious, and affordable!

WATERVILLE Best Dessert – Amici’s – Panna Cotta with Fresh Blueberry Sauce This pretty little cup of Panna Cotta had a simple creamy flavor and was topped with a sweet blueberry sauce made from fresh berries. This was an elegant and light summer dessert. Best Booth – Mainely Brews It is obvious that the folks at Mainely take great pride and put forth a huge effort when setting up their booth. A multitude of potted plants and flowers bursting with colors greet patrons just as they do at their restaurant. Silverware and napkins are offered in nicely arranged woven baskets and the staff looked great in their colorful company t-shirts. Their “Live Lobster” character roamed in front serving to both entertain the crowd and advertise the menu. A festive and welcoming booth. I’ve Got a Secret! Continued from page 1 Your Chamber’s executive board has been truly outstanding in helping pull all of this together- especially Dave Roy of Kennebec Savings and Bruce Harrington of Skowhegan Savings. And the lead itself came from Nickki Desjarden of Hampton Inn. Our goal has been to make this the most inviting and enjoyable shoot of all its productions – talk us up!! Many other businesses and restaurants benefited from this production of Major League Fishing, which hosted VIP parties for its sponsors and shopped locally in order to include gift baskets in the hotel rooms. Thank you to all who put up with my vague requests as I was not allowed by contract to disclose what was happening until the very last minute. And, please share your stories with me both now and in the future if you benefitted from this investment made by your Chamber.

5 Must-Have Google Apps + 3 Important Pairings By Tracy O’Clair Maximize your Google experience and boost your business's productivity by linking your Google products. Below is a list of must-have applications as well as important pairings. The first step, if you haven't already, is to create a Google account as you'll need one to activate all of the below applications. Most companies, however, will want the Google Apps Business account for maximization of connectivity between a wider array of Google products and 24/7 customer assistance. 5 Must-Have Apps: 1) Gmail: Google's email service boasts bennies like Google Docs, Google Talk, Google Calendar, Google Sites and at least 1 GB of free storage. More importantly, a login name for access to all other Google applications. 2) Google Plus: Google’s social media networking site is a great place to connect with other businesses and business professionals. Page 6 continued from page 1 Unity College & Thomas College The partnership involves the creation of a series of online courses by both colleges that will serve as the foundation for a long-term partnership. These courses will enable students to take advantage of the distinct academic strengths of both Thomas and Unity no matter which college they are enrolled in. By capitalizing on Thomas's reputation in business education and Unity's excellence in the physical sciences, the partnership will help students become more competitive in today's workplace upon graduation from college. It also includes a three-year pilot program involving the establishment of a $450,000 merit-based scholarship fund to support students enrolled in the Thomas College Accelerated Master of Business Administration (MBA) program, which enables graduate students to secure an advanced business degree in less than one year. The fund was created through a $300,000 grant from the Unity Foundation and $150,000 from Thomas. First preference for the scholarships will be given to Unity graduates. The concept behind the program is that an MBA combined with a sustainability sciences-focused degree from Unity will make these students highly employable. Unity Foundation CEO Larry Sterrs said, "The Foundation sees this as an opportunity to have 30 more MBA graduates, who would ideally remain in central Maine, to help grow the state's economy through their leadership." The scholarship fund will provide a minimum of 30 scholarships of up to $10,000 with Thomas providing up to $5,000 to match each scholarship. In keeping with Thomas's focus on providing an affordable education to its students, this removes the economic barriers to getting an MBA for

students who qualify. The maximum scholarship award of $15,000 represents nearly 64 percent of the total cost of obtaining an MBA at Thomas. As part of the new online education offerings, Unity students will have the opportunity to take a Management Principles course taught by a Thomas professor online during the fall semester. Meanwhile, a Unity professor will teach an online section of Environmental Issues and Insights to Thomas students. Unity students will develop business and management skills, while Thomas students will learn about the environment and sustainability. As the initial three-year term of the project goes forward, new courses will be added by each college, including courses over the summer. By the end (of the initial three years) each institution will have nine courses they will teach online. The colleges have each designated $100,000 to create the courses and market them to students. The Unity Foundation donated $100,000 to Thomas for its portion. Dr. Evans said, "We are taking advantage of the fact that the strength Thomas has meshes together very nicely with our own strengths." Unity students will take courses in management, leadership, accounting and economics, while their counterparts at Thomas will benefit from the sustainability and environmental perspectives that Unity faculty will provide. Dr. Edwards added, "This crosscollege collaboration will strengthen both institutions and the central Maine region as a whole. We are committing to the spirit and vision of a long-term partnership through which we will build something together that neither institution could do on its own."

Ask yourself; what would happen to your business if

tomorrow you came in and your computers wouldn’t turn on or if they turned on and all of the information on them had been deleted or STOLEN! What would that mean to your operation, your reputation, and your livelihood? MSS specializes in PC Security, including protection from viruses, spyware, and adware. Steve Hayden, GM, VP, and an owner has watched the security business evolve during his nearly 20 years at MSS, “gone are the days where businesses put a few sensors on their doors, now it’s a much more custom designed systems that often includes, network protection, and camera systems”. Custom designed camera systems are another area that MSS has stayed on the forefront of technology with. Whether it’s for insurance protection, theft, or monitoring productivity and service, camera systems are becoming a staple for many business owners. By staying on the forefront of technology and their customers’ needs MSS has seen a steady growth in business which has led to new hires, including Shawn Michaud who joined Its staff in May after more than 12 years working for Valley Distributors.
