DALL BREEDS TOUR

erek and I primarily jump from an Angus tour to an occasional Hereford tour to another Angus tour, but no matter what, we end with the All-Breeds Tour in North Dakota. After a week or more of looking at black cattle, it's nice to see some color, and since it’s early October, color is all around. North Dakota is a land of extremes: extremely cold or hot, always windy and friendly, and usually dry. The cattle represent these harsh weather conditions, and they all mention that in the bios of any producer here. Derek and I had been to Jamestown for a past tour, but arriving earlier, we had more choices for dinner other than the chain that starts with Apple. After driving around a bit (I was determined to find something), we discovered a whole new part of Jamestown that we had yet to visit, and the Buffalo Grill served up some excellent fare for our evening hunger. Knowing the feast that was about to happen on a tour day,

we should have skipped it, but the food here was excellent, and we will both recommend that place to anyone in the area. The NDSA All Breed Tour has been a one-day tour for the past couple of years, hopefully making it easier to break away from the tractor for a day and enjoy exceptional cattle, conversation & food. Plus, it's a free tour and a chance to win door prizes for every person registered. With door prizes ranging from a gate to a grill to cash prizes to a pair of gloves, many participants tend to hold until the end. Derek won the $250 cash prize one year, which isn't too bad for a day's work, considering we also got free meals there. Jamestown is close enough to home, so I can make it there in a few hours and be home after the end of the tour. Derek isn't as fortunate in that aspect, but he loves the road, though his handsome new F150 died, and he got Ford to buy it back. Since then, he’s been having fun driving a new Tesla as he wanted to see what they were all about. It sure is fast!

The first registered Angus female was purchased in 1994 by Bruce & Lori Dally for their son, Wade (then 12), to show that year in 4-H. That initial purchase from Vandeberghe’s was the start of the Dally Angus Ranch, although I doubt anyone knew it then. Bruce, Lori, & Wade continued with their commercial herd, but Wade wanted to keep that initial heifer, her daughters, and a son or two they would use in their commercial herd and eventually sell off. The herd grew quite organically until, in 2006, Wade acquired a remaining herd from a neighbor/ family friend who passed suddenly, adding another three dozen to the registered herd practically overnight. That neighbor was building his retirement herd during the summer months and, off from his teaching job, had taught him about the benefits of using AI for selective genetics. Wade grew into a family of his own, with his wife Bailey and their daughters Bristol (13), Dawson (1 ½), and Cooper, a 4-year-old pup who was the center of attention as our cover shot from last month. Wade started a construction company with some friends and sold Bulls private treaty. After being pulled from

his construction business one too many times to sell a bull, he decided to move to a one-day production sale in 2018. Today, the herd consists of 100 registered females, and Wade is still utilizing AI extensively on the registered herd and their bulls in their commercial herd. Both herds co-exist and are expected to thrive on their own, on pasture grasses and cover crops until Mother Nature dictates they can’t. Due to being in the commercial business for so long, the Dallys keep their eyes on udder quality, feet, disposition, and carcass data from the past 12 years. In 2023, they had some open cows, and Wade wasn’t quite ready to sell them and decided to roll them into a fall calving herd. This year’s production sale will offer select females, yearling bulls, and 18-month-old bulls at the Ranch in Montpellier, ND, on February 22nd.

LISBON, ND

The Brown’s ranch dates to 1910, when Curtis’ grandparents began building and now has four generations living within it. Richard & Beatrice (Curtis’ parents), Curtis & Laurie, their son Troy (Jessica), and their children make up the 4th generation to call the acreage near Montpelier, ND home. Curtis’ father, Richard, is credited with having the most influence on him and helping Curtis get his start in the Charolais business. Growing up, the family raised Hereford-Simmental cross cattle and, in the ’60s, started crossing them with Charolais bulls. They liked the lively, fast-growing calves and the feed conversion the crosses produced. When Curtis was in 8th grade, his father Richard gifted him a Charolais heifer, and when she calved, Curtis had to decide to keep or sell the calf. He desired to grow his herd, and whenever he had heifers born, he kept them. By the time Curtis graduated high school in 1982, he had taken his inventory to his father, who suggested he enter the purebred Charolais business. The first registered females came a year later, and he began ranching right alongside his father.

Credit to Curtis’ father, Richard, cannot be overstated

as Curtis says, “he wouldn’t be in the cattle business if it wasn’t for him.” At the beginning of his ranching career and when he was newly married, Curtis and Laurie had the opportunity to buy some land near the browns farm, expanding and making the operation more sustainable for his father and his family. In 1985, he began selling bulls private treaty and, in 2006, started with a public auction. Curtis and Laurie have two grown children, daughter Heather & Lance farm on the western side of the state, while Son Troy & Jessica and their kids reside here and work alongside his father. Four generations work together with common goals to continue the tradition for the next one. Curtis served on the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association from 2010- 2018 and was awarded Rancher of the Year in 2023. The annual C-B Charolais sale will be held for its 10th year at their facility, just a mile south of the ranch, on March 25, 2025. FB: CbarBcharolais 701-489-3425

MONTPELIER, ND

Terry & Cathy (Wilkinson) Schlenker and four of their eleven children handle the daily farm and ranch duties. Terry began AI'ing his commercial heifers to Simmental Bulls in 1983, registered his first Simmental female a year later, and the operation grew from there.

AI and ET have played a large part in their advancement ever since. They've paid particular attention to sustainability and longevity and selected for structural soundness, udders, disposition, and eye appeal. Sustainability and longevity are necessary since this herd supports five families, each with its own herd, within the herd. Each family being responsible for their own herd allows them to make their own decisions on breeding, keeping in mind how that will affect the others. They have concentrated on producing solid-colored, polled seedstock Simmental with special attention to maternal traits. Since 2000, they have collected ultrasound data on every bull and retained heifer. Their

efforts to remain on the cutting edge of the industry, as well as the breed progress, show in their collection of 25 years of carcass and ultrasound data. In addition to the physical data they are committed to collecting for breed progress, they submit DNA on all calves born each year and have compiled DNA for every animal within the herd for genomic evaluation translating into more accurate EPDs in the promotion of genetic advancement. They have produced many breed-leading AI sires: WS Beef Maker R13, WS Beef King W107, WS Hot Beef x38, WS Proclamation E202 and WS All Around Z35, and the renowned, breed-changing donor cow, WS Miss Sugar C4. Aaron Schlenker introduced us to the family (his youngest is on our cover this month) and a few of their favorite bulls and heifer calves that they brought today, which will also appear in their next production sale. AI still plays a big part in their herd genetic development, where they will feature tried and true sire groups as well as new bloodlines to keep moving forward. The Wilkinson Farms Simmental's next production sale is at the C-B Charolais sale facility on February 20, 2025. WilkinsonFarmsSimmentals.com 701-489-3583

MEDINA, ND

Dennis & Sherry Gustin started breeding purebred Gelbvieh at their ranch in Mandan in 1982, only 11 years after the breed's introduction to the US. They chose Gelbvieh for their strong maternal traits, performance, and docility. All three of their daughters and spouses have cattle in the herd, and an interest in the operation. Dennis’ brother Al and his wife Peggy are also involved in the operation. Sarah (Gustin) and Richie Heinrich are hosting the lunch stop today at the farm established in 1939 by Richie's grandparents and are the next generation of the program. Half the herd resides in the hills south of Mandan, and the other half is at Heinrich's about 90 miles to the east, where the terrain is cropland and flatter. The herd is 100% regis-

tered with mostly purebreds and black and red Balancers. They do ET work and an extensive AI program, breeding nearly 300 females annually. Diamond D was recognized third in the nation in 2023 for Dams of Dominance Bred. These females breed early, maintain calving intervals, produce above-average calves, and stay in the herd cows. The calving season runs from the end of February through April. They do not creep feed in summer to identify the high-producing females. Weaning starts in late September, and the calves feed on a TMR ration for gains of 3.3-3.5 pounds a day to maintain longevity. Bulls are developed on a 15-acre pasture to keep them sound and athletic. They focus on cattle with great dispositions, high performance, strong maternal and carcass traits, high performance, and calving ease. Each animal has been sire verified and

DNA tested by sale time to provide genomically enhanced EPDs. The annual production sale, now held at Heinrich's near Medina, ND, will be held on February 20, 2025.

KETTERLING SIMMENTALS

WISHEK, ND

Ketterling Simmental/Red Angus is owned and operated by Ron and Diane Ketterling, their son, Jonathan, Dowayne, and Agnes Ketterling. Ron and DoWayne grew up near Wishek, ND – about 20 miles from our dinner stop for this tour. A tornado came in 1964 and wiped out their parent's farm, and as Ron put it, "spread that house for 10 miles". Rather than rebuilding, their parents bought another place to the northeast of Wishek, which is more hilly, rocky, and suitable for cattle. They would have been crop farmers if they stayed at their other location. The family started raising cattle, primarily commercial Herefords, and in 1971, Minnesota Valley Breeders AI'd a Hereford cow to a Simmental bull. The first year they sold some yearling steers, he recalls, was a few cents less per pound than the Herefords were bringing, but the extra pounds of the Simmental steers made us more money. More pounds, with the same amount of cattle, and the switch to Simmental was imminent. Bulls were purchased from other Dakota breeders and Bar 5 in Canada. Following high school, Ron graduated from NDSU and returned to the family's farm in 1976. He has been working with his brother, DoWayane, ever since.

LEHR, ND

TNT Simmental Ranch started selling bulls in 1985 with original owners Kevin & Lynette Thompson of Almont, North Dakota. From the start, a strong emphasis was placed on performance, phenotype, fleshing ability, docility, udder quality, and high maternal traits. That emphasis on traits easily transferred to the next-generation TNT Ranch at Lehr, ND, owned by Shanon (Thompson) & Gabe Erbele. Shanon has been in a slow transition of buying her parent's herd and has taken the reins of carrying her family's values and brand forward, as her passion for the registered cattle runs deep, just like her father, Kevin. Shanon & Gabe and their six children are a big part of the TNT program now. Kevin & Lynette, who are slowly retiring, were happy to pass the enterprise on to the next generation. Shanon & Gabe started purchasing cattle

In 1992, Red Angus was incorporated due to color discounts on Simmental cattle. The Red Angus eliminated the spots in the Simmental in the first generation. AI & ET have played an essential role in their herd, and although ET has dropped off somewhat, AI has remained a constant, and maybe even more, since Jonathan (Ron's son) joined the brothers seven years ago. One thing they strive for in their cattle, now numbering in the hundreds, is disposition. "We've had a lot of positive feedback on the disposition of our cattle," Ron says. Feet and udders are essential, too, but disposition remains at the forefront. The top half of the heifers sell as open replacements, and the bulls as 20-month-olds, both as private treaty beginning in March.

from Kevin & Lynette in 2014 and have continued to grow off their herd ever since. Since 2020, they have purchased around 180 of their top young cows, all carrying bull calves. They calved out 360 registered cows this past spring, while Kevin calved out around 250. They hosted the 37th Annual sale at their new sale facility at their ranch in Lehr in 2021, and it was a great transition from the Almont location. The transition is still in progress, and I don’t think anyone ever retires – least of all the American ranchers. More changes already appear to be on the horizon. Shanon has reached maximum capacity for her operation, and Kevin also needs to focus on

cutting back the herd at his location. Between the two locations, they planned to sell off around 200 bred heifers and cows this fall, and within a few days, most had been spoken for. But if you’re looking for some bred Simmentals, they plan to continue to offer some females for sale each fall, so get on the list early. Plan to check out the 40th Annual "Explosive Difference" sale at TNT Simmental in Lehr, ND, on February 14, 2025, where they will offer around 130 Simmental, SimAngus, and Red Angus bulls.
