Join Us in Celebrating Our Centennial

In 2023, Sitz Angus is celebrating 100 years of serving cattleman with an unwavering commitment to providing Angus seedstock with an emphasis on maternal strength and producer profitability.

While pursuing the American dream, Will and Freida Sitz purchased their first registered Angus cattle in 1923. Four generations of the Sitz family, enduring challenges along the way, have grown and cultivated Sitz Angus into what it is today.

Twenty Three for 2023

Owner/Operator

Felton Angus Ranch

D eer L odge, M ontana

1. Tell us about what you do

I am a third generation black Angus seed stock producer.

2. Where did you grow up?

I grew up on the family’s ranches in Springdale and Ashland, MT.

3. Introduce us to your family at the ranch.

I am the the youngest of three children. Our parents are Richard and Karol Felton. My two sisters are married and have a couple kids each and live off the ranch. I also have two daughters that live with me 50% of the time.

4. Tell us more about your kids

I have two daughters Sydni (12) and Quincy (10)

that I’m very proud of. Sydni is really getting into cattle and ranching and makes a good hand for us on the weekends. She also likes to play B-Ball so I'm looking forward to some road time to go to games. She is trying her hand at taking a steer to the county fair this year too. So we have a couple fluffy show steers in the corral now to keep us on our toes. Quincy is a bit different than her sister as she doesn’t enjoy cattle as much. She does rather enjoy her trips to the mall, hair stylist and stops into a Claire’s store but also loves a trip to our pond full of brook trout at the Wisdom Ranch. They are very bright in school and pull exceptional grades.

5. Describe your program at Felton Angus Ranch

Our program specializes in selling bulls to commercial producers. They are what keeps the industry rolling and what keeps us rolling. We focus on raising a good solid bull that are ready to work once they step off the trailer. We focus on raising bulls with good feet, structure, good weaning weights, producing good females plus produce excellent feeding cattle. We don’t live and die by Genomics and EPD’s.

Twenty Three for 2023

6. You just moved your ranch to a new location, tell us more

My dad was getting older and help is hard to find these days so consolidating the operation seemed like the thing to do. We were four hours apart which wasn’t very ideal. We did a lot of gear shift going between the two places and with the price of fuel this will bring down operational expenses. Now we are all within a 60-70 mile radius with less acreage and can run more cattle than ever before.

7. What's your favorite/most used tool on the ranch?

Silencer squeeze chute. You actually don’t mind working cattle when you got one of them.

8. What was your first real job?

Working for dad in the summer and I got paid with a rifle at the end. I ran an old 2090 case with a shitty AC and a round Baler. I could hardly reach the clutch but we got it done.

9. What do you think about today’s cattle industry?

It can be a challenge. I try to pay as much attention to as many things that could effect the markets

as possible. We sell bulls to commercial ranchers but we also sell commercial feeding cattle as well as fed cattle. So I need to pay attention to futures, read market analysis, weather around the area, commodity prices and what the Government is up to. All this helps and kind of gives you the pulse of the industry and what bulls will realistically bring.

10. What can we do to keep today’s cattlemen in business? We need to stop regulating folks to death, lower these inputs such as fertilizer, fuel, and equipment. Feed costs are also a concern. $250 a ton for hay drives lots of cows to market or takes producers completely out. As far as out west we need to really keep our eyes on Public land grazing. This administration is no friend of that and have plenty of friends in the environmental groups.

11. If they could hear you, what would you tell the politicians in Washington?

I would tell them to do what we sent them to do. Get busy and do the people’s work. Pass legislation that’s good for the country’s citizens. Keep people accountable including this administration.

Twenty Three for 2023

thankful to my brother-in-law for ripping the cord out of the wall. I never used it again.

18. How do you manage your animals in the winter?

Depends on conditions. If it’s cold, wet or all of the above we bed pens aggressively. Cows in pasture find cover in draws and behind brush and trees. If conditions are bad we increase feed a bit to give em more calories.

19. Tell us about any mentor(s) you’ve had along the way.

Grandpa and Dad are two that easily come to mind. A lot of what I know came from them.

20. What do you do to get away from it all?

12. How can local governments do better regarding the cattle industry?

Local government is the base layer of laws, enforcement and regulations. If they understand agriculture and are willing to work with the industry it will make one’s life a lot easier. If you want to build feedlot, dairy or hog facilities, local government has lots to do with that. If they are not friendly or open minded to Ag, it can be tough.

13. Favorite cut of beef and how do you like it cooked?

Rib eye...medium rare.

14. Favorite restaurant?

Believe it or not it’s probably TX Roadhouse. It’s a lively atmosphere with good drinks, dandy rolls ands a really good piece of beef for a chain. Not sure who their beef supplier is but I’ve never been let down.

15. What industry organizations do you support?

USCA. Seems to be on par with my beliefs. Some groups are either too radical and swing and miss on everything or they are too buddy buddy with certain entities.

16. How did you get started with the Angus breed? I got started through family as I was born into it. Grandpa had his first bull sale in 1972 but also sold bulls for years before that all over MT at different sales.

17. What’s the craziest/most unexpected thing that’s happened to you on the ranch?

Getting a 220 volt blast from a pressure washer when I was younger that almost took my life. I'm

Hunting and fishing when I can. Sure I'd like to do more, but ranching keeps a guy super busy especially when we just moved. Sometimes you got to force yourself and just go.

21. Ford, Chevy, Dodge?

Chevy. Used to run Dodge but had some trouble there. Nice to ride smooth like a Cadillac when your spreading out the bulls.

22. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In Deer Lodge or Wisdom, MT and still in the cattle business. Good or bad it’s in the blood and it will never go away.

23. What advice do you have for young, up-and-coming ranchers?

It’s a tough life as well as rewarding. Be prepared for its ups and downs. It’s a great life out in the country and knowing you're the backbone of the USA. Work hard with a good attitude, ethics, smarts and do it safely. Then you can make a go of it. Just buy Felton bulls and it will help you out as well, lol!

100 YEARS OF SALES

LARCHWOOD, IOWA

Fred Metzger SR. held his first beef cattle production sale on Tuesday, November 27, 1923 in Larchwood, IA which is in extreme northwest Iowa. The breed that he had developed was Polled Hereford. The sale consisted of 7 bulls 12 to 19 months old, 20 yearling and 2-year-old heifers, along with 7 cows with calves at their side. Seedstock in those days were sold mainly by private treaty, so having an on-farm sale wasn't your everyday occurrence like these days. The original sale book is kept in the office at Brookdale. I paged through it and thought to myself what it would have been like to put on a sale then, especially compared to the sales of today. Was it easier or more challenging?

Fast forward to 2023 to Fred Sr.’s grandson Mark Metzger and family of Larchwood, IA. They will hold their annual production sale that's 100 years from the 1st sale and by the same family. Although the breed has changed to Angus, the goal of producing superior genetics hasn't changed a bit.

Tim and I had stopped at Brookdale in the spring of 2021. When talking to Mark and his son Scott, we could tell they were very proud of their herd. In the lot nearby, we spotted Brookdale Brutus 390, the top bull from their sale a month earlier. He was a really growthy bull with a ton of muscle and mass, sired by Baldridge Bronc and out of a SAV Resource

3441 daughter. He was waiting for clearance to head to Peak Dot Ranch in Canada. Mark mentioned that 98 years ago his grandfather had his first sale, so I told him that I would keep that in mind and see him in 2023. Our stay back then was cut short as it was time for Mark and Scott to pull cidr’s on a big group of heifers. If we stayed longer there was a good chance of being put to work.

Fred Sr. was way ahead of others in the seedstock business at that time as he performance tested cattle in those early years. Taking weights of his cattle was very important to finding out which cattle grew faster. The industry didn't catch up with any performance testing until the late 50’s or 60’s.

The 2nd production sale occurred in 1929 and the 3rd was in 1936. The Hereford herd was then dispersed around the start of WWII. Jersey cattle were incorporated into the farm in 1926 where records were kept through the Dairy Herd Improvement Association. Fred Jr. (Mark’s father) enjoyed the dairy cattle and developed a nationally known herd. Fred Sr. lived to be 104 years old.

During the 60’s and 70’s, Fred Jr. and family started to get back into the cattle business with various breeds. In 1973, he purchased his 1st purebred Angus, which then started Brookdale

Angus. The Lady Burgess cow family was one of the early families that was purchased and still continues today. Other cow families were purchased such as the Anne and Blackcaps. Things were going good, but then the 1980’s came along and times became very tough financially. Interest rates sky rocketed north of 20 percent and it was difficult for any operation to keep

their head above water. Farm sales were held 6 days a week throughout the whole country. Unfortunately, in 1983 the Brookdale herd was dispersed.

Not long after that, Fred Jr’s. son Mark started to get back on his feet financially and started a herd of Jersey cattle. Those cows produced nationally recognized show cattle. Then in the 90’s, Mark had the itch to start putting together another herd of Angus cows.

This is around the time I met Mark. I received a call from him 29 years ago and he was interested in purchasing a cow that I owned. She was a Lady Burgess that had originally come from Brookdale Angus. t was by chance that Mark found out who owned this cow as the internet and cell phones were not even available then. I had consigned a Lady Burgess female to the MN State Angus Sale and Mark found her in the catalog. Elmdale Farms in Pipestone, MN had purchased a Lady Burgess by Thomas Chaps in the '83 dispersion and I had purchased her and a daughter of hers from Elmdale in one of their production sales. She was Brookdale Lady Burgess 622 and her daughter was Brookdale M E 606 of Elmdale, who was a daughter of 4S Ponderosa. I ended up selling the 606 cow and her daughter to the Metzgers that day. Mark and his dad, along with the boys, made the 250 mile trip to Mabel, MN that day. Mark can still remember our dads talking about farming and the good old days. Tonight, I was standing in the cow lot and can remember that this was about the same spot we stood

and made the deal for Lady Burgess to head back to northwest Iowa.

Mark researched and purchased back the other cow families that were part of the original herd. The Ladies, Anne’s and Blackcap’s were the 3 families that were important to him. Today the herd consists of 150 momma cow where AI plus an intensive embryo transfer program are utilized to improve their genetics. IVF is used and the embryos are implanted into cooperator herds. This year they are planning on 90 plus embryo calves to be born. Performance data is collected on every animal and Total Herd Reporting is used. Their cattle are also Genomic Tested, plus ultrasound data is collected. One thing that is going to be used more in the future is proven genetics from older sires. Balance breeding of a 6-frame animal is very important in mating their decisions. Cattle have been sold nationwide and even into Canada. Both purebred and commercial operations look to Brookdale Angus for their genetic needs.

Brookdale Angus is a family run operation. Mark and his wife Audrey, along with son

American Beef Producer February 2023 24

Scott, run the daily business. Sons Gregg and Matt help when available. Mark also ran a semen rout for Select Sires from 1983-1998 and 2003 to the present for Semex.

On March 3rd 2023 Brookdale Angus will hold their Bull and Female Sale at the Lester, IA Community Center. Approximately 50 bulls and 15 open heifers will be offered. This offering will provide their customers with cattle that can add pounds to a calf crop. The bulls will be penned at the farm with the sale being video only. No cattle will be on site. This has worked out well in the past. In the fall of 2023, a potential retirement sale for Mark is being explored. Mark would like to slow down and let the next generations continue the legacy.

"BEST LAID PLANES"

I like to have some play on words. I’m also a bad speller, but there are times that’s intentional. Last year, Derek and I hit the road in early January, spending time at both Oklahoma City’s and Denver’s stock shows, plus points in between. It was quite hectic and we were also trying to finish up our February issue while on the road. We're running around both shows talking to some great people and Derek's taking a million photos and then he's up each night to be sure we have a magazine to send out to y'all. This year I did my best to plan out a short trip – 3 days - we both fly in and out and get back to work as opposed to spending all of that time in hotel rooms or on the road. I always believe I’m going to write while Derek’s driving, and honestly, it’s only worked out once or twice and in very short intervals. Writing on the plane is much easier. Both of us leaving January 10th, and arriving about the same time would have gotten us to the NWSS by 3:00 the first day at the latest. Instead, I woke up that morning to a canceled flight, which was now rebooked later that night at 7pm. Derek’s flight was still scheduled to be on time, so I quickly transferred the car reservation to his name (thanks Alamo) and hunted for a new flight that might get me there quicker. As I was blaming Southwest for yet another canceled flight, I soon discovered that the real delay was an FAA computer glitch and EVERYONE was affected. Derek, still getting texts from United that his plane was on time, shows up only to find out that “they” didn’t know where his plane was. In fact, they had no idea where

it would for the next 7+ hours. But, eventually we ended up meeting in Denver and what a waste of a day. Fun huh.

Our host had suggested we send our February magazines from the printer to the local post office, since that's what their previous renters had done successfully. But when Derek went to pick them up the next morning, he was met by three angry post office employees. They quite literally treated him as though he had committed a crime by sending the magazines to their post office, because, well, they’re the post office. Maybe they don't like beef? When we finally arrived at NWSS, we were informed of record attendance. Every day thus far had set a record for daily attendance, which they attribute to the Bronco’s winning season, as well as Paramount’s Yellowstone which has had a huge impact on the public’s enthusiasm for ranching. We could tell immediately, when we entered the barns on the hill, that this year’s turnout was a lot like looking at the city of Denver today, compared to 100 years ago. I won’t say it was back to pre-pandemic levels, but it was definitely close. Last year’s barn was practically empty, and I never did witness much going on in the show ring last year. The new yards out back saw similar growth as this year’s participants was easily more than twice what we saw last year.

My older brother Joe drove up from Colorado Springs and joined us as well. I really miss him living in Denver though since I always had a place to stay, wonderful home-cooked meals, and a place to

ship magazines to without being assaulted. We then spent the day walking the yards, and even had time to sit and rest a bit at the Angus Foundation sale that afternoon. Then more, you guessed it, walking. The amount of walking is the one complaint about Denver compared to OKC, but we won't be back to OKC. Denver is where it's at and it's a much better place than it used to be.

We also generally like to treat ourselves once when here in Denver. Despite our $35 spent on

lunch for 2 slices of pizza and two drinks, that wasn’t really the treat. We went to a place downtown that I had been to prior, which I really liked. The 3 of us shared a fantastic Tomahawk steak at an inflated price, but it was worth it. The extras (bottled water & butter) were not, and those 2 items amounted to more than what we paid for lunch.

Day two arrived and went pretty much the same way as the first. Only we were wiser now and not foolishly spending money on overpriced pizza and soda, but hamburgers and fries instead. We did end up running into our good friend Jon Bouma from Montana (Lucky U Cattle) at his display near the event center. We hashed out quite a bit between the three of us for over an hour. While standing there, we were engulfed with people stopping by to tell us how much they love our magazine and that made our day. Then after lots of laughs and updates on his cattle, Jon informed us that one of his kids has ADOLSS, which stands for "Attention Deficit...Oh Look Something Shiny!" (disorder) and that’s when we all discovered we have that too! We might need to order a med bracelet or two for that...

or in other words - a girl in a jeep. with a German Shepherd by her side. I’m sure that will be meaning less to some of you, and that’s OK. Others will get the reference. Our short drive from Dickinson, ND to Sidney, MT (a little over 2 hours at 140 miles) to most would be uneventful. I dislike driving at night. I hate it. But, for some reason, I was in the pilot car, while Derek followed behind me. Probably for the best anyway, I doubt I would have been able to keep up with him. I mainly hate nighttime driving because of deer. Did you know that deer are the most dangerous animal in all of North America? Depending on which website you read of course. A couple of them waved as I drove by, and two of them tried to crash into me, the last of which was just a baby. Even the young ones are out to get me. But we arrived unscathed, I think around 11. We checked into the motel, and got some rest for tomorrow's activities.

Once again, the Montana Angus tour kicked off with a golf tournament at the Sidney Country Club. My teammates and I succeeded at coming in some place after first. Mark Orem from The Oxbow ranch (last year’s tour stop) made the drive over and then

herd started in 1949. They joined the Angus Association in 1974 and then became an Angus seedstock producer in 1977. Their first bull was from Jorgenson Brothers, the infamous Rito 149’s son.

Dante, South Dakota koupalangus.com

Koupal Angus is a 6-generation operation and it’s all family run. It consists of 4 locations, all raising cattle with Bud’s breeding philosophy. They name themselves a slight bit different by adding their own initials into the Koupal Angus brand name. The entire family stands by the same program and pool their resources for the sales. The main home ranch has been in the family since 1916 and the first Angus

Not to get ahead of myself, but I have to tell y’all that my favorite part of the visit was lunch. Yeah, I was famished by noon, but those darn hamburgers were so good. As someone who eats them every day for lunch, Bud sure knows how to cook ‘em. As he says it “I’d rather have a good hamburger, than a poor steak any day”, though in this case it’s every single day. He’s a man after my own heart. What can I say, color me hungry and beef always shows me the way...

Bud tells it like it is, yet he understands what his inspiration is and continues to be, “the love of the land, the openness, and the people you meet." "It’s

commercial producers that do business with us because we are in it for the long haul. They know our program and they can count on it being consistent and successful for their own programs as well. Our breeding philosophy is not only about the numbers, but it’s the phenotype along with the disposition that keeps those returning customers coming back year after year. That’s what people are looking for this day and age."

the results of that, it’s very rewarding and I get a chill every time.”

I’ve heard a lot about the Koupal Angus reputation, and it all makes sense to me now. I spent most of the day with here and there’s no denying the dedication they have to their cattle and their customers every minute of the day. As we sit down for those yummy burgers, Bud continues “the reason I think that we get so many return customers is because

His son-in-law Scott works with him daily and they sure make a good team. I watched them chase down a couple of lost calves and their teamwork is impressive. Bud’s daughter is glad they work well together but she wishes the hours weren’t so long, especially since they have 2 small kids. But she understands that’s what separates real cattlemen from people that are just in it to see that green back. As Bud says, “this isn’t about the money so much as it’s how good can you get those cattle. When you see

they’re all very important to us. Not just because they buy bulls, but because of the people they are. They’re all out there trying to make a living the same as we are. I feel that they can come to our sale and get their money’s worth and we try to know each one them personally as well.”

Their cows are scattered for 60 miles each way. That way they don’t see ‘em or pamper ‘em. They’re real world and it’s just as it is. This is their way and it’s worked for their Angus for 84 years. Bud says

"It's deeper than just the love of the greenback"

it well, “Our cattle are fitting into the way things are going right now with the high fuel and energy costs. The expense of ranching and farming has more than doubled. We’ve been preparing for this over a number of years and we’ve tried to keep our cattle in check for size and performance. Whether it’s calving ease, along with moderate growth, we’ve tried to breed this, but more than anything we’ve tried to breed cattle.” Bud continues, “We’re easy fleshing, and with the price of grain now, I guarantee we’re using very little grain and it’s going to show up in more and more herds down the road. We’re seeing more people, if anything, using more ethanol products. I think that’s what probably going to happen down the road and everybody will see that you have to find different alternatives to how you feed your cattle to survive. A lot of roughage, straw, corn stocks, ethanol byproducts, are going to have to be something that we’re going to get used to using and we’re going to have to have the kind of cattle that will excel on them."

It's easy to see that there's no way that Bud is ever going to slow down. In fact, he's often asked what he’s going to do when he retires. “I’m already doing it,” he says. “It’s something about seeing that cattle, the phenotype…it gets in your blood. But it's also a kind of love and it’s deeper than just a love of the green back”.

After my visit with Bud and Scott, I drove through the rolling hills on the way out of Dante. There's so many cattle around this area and I re-

membered reading a paragraph on their website: “We have always said that this business is not about selling cattle, since everyone has good cattle. It’s about the people you meet along the way and how they influence your life. We have been fortunate to have made some lifetime friends through cattle and selling cattle is just a sideline. It's been great and thank the Angus cattle for the ride.”

It seems I end up staying longer than planned at most ranches. There's a lot to talk about, eat, more story and camaraderie. The longest visit o far has been 49 hours (truth) and the shortest was 1-1/2, though most are about 5-6. With that said, I couldn't make a same day meet after my visit with Koupal, so RJ and I decided on the next morning. I actually caught him heading out for chores as I pulled up and, though we hit it off pretty well, he had some important meetings to attend in a few hours. So we made the best of it.

Raven Angus was established in 1955 by Ray &

Betty Petersek at their ranch south of St. Charles, SD. They originally purchased 10 registered Angus cows from Robert Lynch & Sons of Maloy, Iowa. In 1961, they bought land east of Colome, SD, where Raven Angus now calls home. The herd has grown to 1,100 registered mother cows to date and they'll sell 375 bulls this month. Raven Angus runs year-round with much thought and calculation going into the quality of each year's herd like lots of growth and performance along with being bred to be maternal with good udders. The Petersek family is very much involved in the commercial cattle business as they feed cattle on the farm and grow their own feed. They also bid on many of their customer's commercial calves each fall.

RJ, his dad Rod and his son Linkyn run the main ranch with long days and nights throughout the year. RJ's brother Reed runs the north location where there aren't as many cows and his calving season is a bit later, but he sure has his work cut out for him as well.

The Peterseks have quite the following around here locally. Most of their buyers are within an hour of their ranch, though this year they're reaching out a bit more to bring some more potential long term customers into the fold. Sure, that involves more paperwork, but that means RJ's wife Sara has more to do, and she's a pro. If it weren't for her hard work every day, they wouldn't have any documentation on hand for the hundreds of customers that come to each and every sale. RJ's expertise is AI and calving. When RJ's brother moved back and took over the north ranch, the whole place just snowballed. As RJ says "you start with the embryo deal

words and photos by Derek Sample, Derek@ABPmag.com

and it just keeps getting bigger without even trying. We work really hard and we're growing faster than we can keep up. We're really in sync now and we're doing the right thing. I'm sure a lot of people can relate to that."

Now about calving, "Our calving season starts the 10th of January every year. We have them all tagged so we know who's who and when to expect. Of course, a few are born a bit early right after Christmas. This happens through April and we'll have 600-700 cows calf in January & February and then the rest calf March and April. It's a crazy, crazy time."

RJ continues, "right after that, it's time to start AI around the 1st of April plus we'll also be planting crops. There's a lot of long days in the spring around here. But it's virtually where your money's made. You gotta be on the ball and just get it done.

Then through the summer, we put up feed and take care of the crops that are in."

"During the late summer and fall, we try to get to the cows once a week and mineral 'em, make sure they're ok. We also knock off the flies with spray and check for pink eye, etc."

Foot rot is a problem in the Angus community and the boys at Raven Angus saw this a number of years ago but quickly worked through it. "It wasn't a problem in the long run, but we did see it short

term, but that was a while ago."

Rain has been a problem here, as in it hasn't been. "This morning the rain was slow and steady for a few minutes and then gone. Our area is full of micro climates and the drought's been pretty tough. The guy down the road will get an inch or so as compared to our tenths of an inch here. It's supposed to get windy today, that's one thing we can count on."

We talked about covid and Biden and Trump for a while. "It's all a big mess. Now you can get away with just about everything. You don't go to jail for big crimes let alone small ones.

Back to his bulls, "the bull sale is always a ton of work to get ready for and I'm sure everybody says the same thing. Then the morning of, everybody wants to come up and talk which is great, but I'm often too busy to say more than a few words. I want to talk to these guys but it's too crazy the morning of the sale."

Talking about the weather and the big storm last April, "yeah North Dakota got the blizzards and we got 7 or 8 days of really heavy rain. I think it was

59 American Beef Producer
"Working hard for something we don't care about is called stress. Working hard for something we love is called passion."

8 inches. That so helped the deficit we had. It was nonstop and it was great for us."

There's an awesome little hunting type cabin back on one of their pastures, nestled among some trees and next to a small lake. An old water pump sits out front and it just screams out to a photographer like myself. Turns out that's where his grandfather would stay for a few days at a time while working the cattle. They don't let anybody in the place just to kind of preserve it as part of the history around here. It was definitely a great little cabin and in a beautiful spot. I would choose to stay there if they'd let me. Plus the dogs would love it too. :) RJ said he's always had plans to fix it up or build something else out here, "It's just far enough away to take a breath or two."

Regarding help around the ranch, "we're hiring,

but nobody wants to work. Even if they get hired at a ranch anywhere around here, even if they don't know anything, we're all willing to help teach 'em. But then they just want to leave at 4 o'clock and go play on Instagram, ya know? Young people don't know any different and I feel sorry for 'em. That's just life. There's no leadership and it's tough becasue they were put in a difficult position and I get that. I've worked with a number of 'em over the years and they just have no interest in doing anything. I just don't know what their interests are, but they don't either."

RJ continues, "No passion, if you dont' have passion in life then what do you get up in the morning for? When you find that, you'll be passionate about it for the rest of your life. Why force yourself to get up every morning if you don't like what you do?"

On EPD's, "we test often and it takes so long to get the results, sometimes over a month. They can change quickly too. We often don't print all of them since it confuses a lot of our customers."

What have I learned today visiting with RJ that I could share with you? Here's the short of it: In a world of technology, with shortcuts available at every turn, the Peterseks work hard to keep their ranch as natural as can be, and their cattle will impress the hell out of ya, especially if you already know what you're looking for!

Have you ever been hurt on the job? Most of the American public has, at least one point in their life, been injured “on the job”. We tried an injury of the month a year ago, and since we didn’t get any responses, I’m betting that working cattle must be a safe occupation, and no one gets hurt. Ever! Well, OK... So we thought we’d put this back out there. Are you looking for another way to promote your business? One that will only cost you a wee bit of pride? We’re looking for your stories and injuries. Send us a picture or two to the email above, tell us a little about what happened, and you too could be featured in an upcoming Injury of the Month!

BALANCE THE SCALES

BREED EFFECTS FOR COW MATURE

Big cows come with big feed bills.

That’s why smart genetic selection pays off in the cow herd. Simmental-influenced cows are an average 74 lb. lighter at maturity than Angus-sired counterparts, according to a recent U.S. Meat Animal Research Center study.a,d

While Simmental is sized for more efficient gains, 20-year genetic trend lines also show the breed offers reliable calving ease, early growth and cow longevity. That’s a balanced herd built for profit.

406-587-4531 • simmental.org STAND STRONG SIMMENTAL aUSMARC, Zimmerman, M., et al., “Breed and heterotic effects for mature weight in beef cattle,” J. of Anim. Sci., Vol. 99, 2021. bAdjusted for sire sampling, Angus was the heaviest at maturity among the 16 breeds evaluated. Solutions are deviations from Angus. YW EPDs were extracted from genetic evaluations conducted in 2019. cEstimate of MWT differences at 6 years of age. dThe study considered 108,857 weight records from 5,156 crossbred cows sired by 787 bulls.

C TAHOE 2015

Great built son of Tahoe that packs all the bells and whistles along when it comes top carcass values. His added length of body and stride is a bonus for ranchers who need a bull that can travel big country.

One of three full brothers by Real Deal and the popular D83 donor dam. They all have a super set of balanced EPD’s and have excellent pigment. Two full sisters were a highlight in our fall sale averaging $13,250. This bull was named calf champion in Reno and will be shown in Oklahoma City and Denver.

LOT 210
