2020-2021 Henry C. Gardiner Scholarship Winners Announced In the most diverse and competitive applicant pool to date, 19 candidates representing 11 states competed for the coveted 2020-2021 Henry C. Gardiner Scholarship awards. Five students were selected and will receive financial assistance for their academic excellence and commitment to making a difference in agriculture. The Henry C. Gardiner Scholarship is designed to identify Kansas State University students with animal sciences and industry as their chosen major and with the greatest potential to make a difference in the future of the beef industry. All candidates must complete a detailed application. A designated panel conducts a rigorous interview with each of the finalists. Applicants are evaluated on academic excellence, work ethic, leadership potential and attitude. Recipients must express an interest in animal genetics, animal nutrition, animal health, reproductive management, agribusiness management or marketing. The five students selected to receive 2020-2021 Henry C. Gardiner Scholarships are: Colton Ivers, Austin, Minnesota, is a junior and a member of the K-State meats judging team. Colton plans to return to his family’s farm and grow their seedstock operation. Katie Lybarger, Garnett, Kansas, is a junior and also a member of the K-State meats judging team. Katie plans to pursue a master’s degree in meat science. Abbey Schiefelbein, Kimball, Minnesota, is a junior majoring in food science. Abbey plans to work in research and development helping to create more nutritious and affordable food, thereby 8
decreasing food insecurity. Annie Schoetmer, Batesville, Indiana, is a senior planning to pursue her master’s in meat science. Her interests and experience have influenced her decision to focus on developing more palatable lamb protein products. Hannah Williams, Kearney, Nebraska, is a junior meat science major as well. Hannah was raised on her family’s generational Hereford operation and has diverse interests ranging from animal health in the cattle feeding sector to meat science research. “The five students selected to receive scholarships for 2020-2021 represent everything we all want to believe about the future of agriculture. Their areas of interest represent the diversity our industry must embrace to bring about change,” said Mark Gardiner. “Henry Gardiner’s curiosity and continual search to make genetic improvement through better science, technology and education serves as a role model for these students. We are confident the five students selected will benefit from this scholarship, complete their educations and go on to become future industry influencers.” The endowed Henry C. Gardiner Scholarship is possible through the generous contributions of Gardiner customers, friends and family in an effort to continue the legacy of Henry Gardiner. Students classified as a rising-junior, junior or senior, either enrolled in or planning to enroll at Kansas State University with a major in Animal Science and Industry or closely related field may apply. animal production. Gardiner Angus Ranch is a family-owned and operated business that produces registered and commercial Angus cattle. The original ranch was homesteaded near Ashland, Kansas, in 1885 by Henry Gardiner’s grandfather. Today, the ranch encompasses more than 48,000 acres. The Gardiner operation sells approximately 2,500 bulls and 2,000 registered and commercial females a year. One hundred percent of the sale offering each year is the result of artificial insemination or embryo transfer. Gardiner Angus Ranch is a founding member of U.S. Premium Beef, the producer-owned limited liability corporation with minority ownership in National Beef, the nation’s fourth largest beef processing company. By providing access to a proven value-added processing system through GAR delivery rights, Gardiner Angus Ranch customers have received more than $10.16 million in premiums and dividends. 2020 American Simmental Golden Book Recipients Named By Dan Rieder ASA taps two individuals with a long-time affinity for SimGenetics to receive the prestigious World Simmental-Fleckvieh Federation Golden Book Award. Doug Parke, Paris, Kentucky Over the course of his productive career, Doug Parke of Paris, Kentucky, has been an ardent supporter and champion for the American Simmental Association and Simmental cattle. A Kentucky native, he is intimately involved in Simmental genetics through a wide range of experiences. As a younger man, he worked for several of the most prominent Simmental operations in the area, including Kieckhefer Simmentals of Paris, Kentucky, Benedict Inc. of McArthur, Ohio, and Tennessee-based Breck Ellison Farms at Knoxville. Both Fritz Kieckefer and Breck Ellison served on the ASA Board. During his time as manager of Breck Ellison Farms, Parke was active on the Tennessee Simmental Association board, including a term as President. Following the dispersal of the ElliMarch 2020

son herd, he moved back to Kentucky where he ultimately established his own livestock consulting firm, a company that eventually evolved into the management of several dozen Simmental sales annually. More recently, he added his own online sales company, DP Online Sales, LLC. As a member of the advisory board of the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in Louisville, Parke works diligently to keep Simmental genetics at the forefront. The NAILE is an effective showcase for Simmental genetics, ranging from the exhibition of Fleckvieh to purebred to percentage cattle in the conduct of the event’s largest breed sale. Parke has traveled across the country exhibiting Simmental cattle, including every major livestock show. Additionally, he has consulted on fullblood and purebred Simmental sales across the US and Canada. He has been especially supportive of the next generation of breeders, serving as a judge for American Junior Simmental Association Regional and National Classics, traveling all over the country to attend and assist with these events. DP Sales sponsored the Peter Courtney Memorial Scholarship, which provides monetary assistance to AJSA members for attendance at the Summer Leadership Conference. Parke’s support for the ASA, AJSA, and Simmental cattle is unwavering. His depth of knowledge of pedigrees, phenotype, and breeders is unmatched. He strongly believes every breeder, no matter how big or small, matters in the very existence of the breed. His love for the breed is contagious and unchanged over the decades. Bob Volk, Arlington, Nebraska For almost half a century, Bob Volk, Arlington, Nebraska, has enjoyed an 10
enduring relationship with Simmental cattle. Born and raised in Battle Creek, he graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a degree in Animal Husbandry and was active in Block and Bridle and Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. Following graduation, Volk joined the US Army Reserves, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant.
J&C Simmentals successfully promotes cattle through the show ring, exhibiting at the National Western, the American Royal and Nebraska, Texas, and Iowa State Fairs, among many. Over the years at Denver, they won Purebred Pen of Three Bulls, Percentage Pen of Three Bulls, and received the first Power Bull Award.
In the early 1970s, Volk’s J&C Simmentals, named for the first initials of his two sons, Jay and Clark, acquired six cows bred to the famed, imported Simmental bull, LaCombe Achilles. To achieve black Simmentals, older Angus cows were bred to Simmental bulls, and only black progeny were retained, forming the foundation for their current herd of 200 head. In addition to the cattle herd, the J&C operation also focuses on the production of hay, beans, and corn.
Volk and Jeanette, his wife of 62 years, now live in the town of Arlington, while Jay and his family (wife Kim and daughter Kylie) reside on the home place, two miles from town. Clark and his family (wife Leslie and daughters Claire, Madeline, and Gracie) live on a second farm, also near Arlington.
Utilizing a breeding program that involves extensive use of artificial insemination and embryo transfer, J&C has produced a number of nationally prominent sires. The majority of their females are run on pasture in the historic Nebraska Sandhills of Pierce County. Bulls have been marketed to commercial breeders for the past four decades. The next Annual J&C Bull Sale will be held at West Point Livestock, January 25, 2020, and will offer 110 bulls, 20 select open heifers, and 20 bred heifers. A member of the ASA Board of Trustees from 2004 to 2010, Volk served on the Activities and Events Committee and was instrumental in implementing the National Champion Bull Award. He served as a sales consultant for several well-known breeders and as general manager of the prestigious Aksarben Livestock Show at Grand Island for 16 years. During that time, he coordinated and supervised the world’s largest 4-H show. Midwest Beef Producer

James A Sample Farmer, Father, Friend. Legend. By Derek Sample New Publisher/Senior Editor/Photographer Midwest Beef Producer Magazine
To my brother and I, we sorta had a middle name that we used for my Dad. “Angus”. Yeah I know, that could be misinterpreted because my father was 6’2”/250lbs or that he was part Scottish; but for us it was a term of endearment. You see, my Dad didn’t have a normal middle name and us kids thought that was pretty weird. His middle name was just (and only just) the first letter of the alphabet. “It makes a statement”, he would say. OK then, so why “Angus”? Well, he lived and breathed cattle. Those who know him would say he lived and breathed every single farm animal, but Cattle were by far his favorite. In fact, my father often dreamed of owning a cattle ranch but with us moving across the country so often during our formative years (Air Force and then different marketing jobs) it just wasn’t feasible. So, to satisfy his need for farming and joy of ranching, he would write about it. And write he did… He would interview ranchers and write about them. He would photograph bulls and write some more. He would attend Ag events and then write all night. As a result, his writing received major recognition which led to numerous awards over the years as well as special invites to important meetings with heads of state and even a couple of Presidents. These distinctions and achievements proved that he could start his own successful magazine, which you are reading right now in its 24th year of issue.
My Dad, Jim knew everybody and everybody knew him. Inviting Jim to a party or an Ag event was mandatory since his quick wit and clever humor would place him at the center of any social plus his musical mastery on the piano would be the grand slam to revel in. Days and even weeks after some gatherings he would receive calls and letters thanking him for attending their event and of course ‘providing the entertainment’. Jim’s true passion was the Midwest Beef Producer though. If he wasn’t home remodeling his house (again) he was at the office taking the next step to perfecting the magazine for his readers. He deeply cared for the farming and cattle community and spent countless hours mentoring/hosting young people in the genre. Unfortunately he passed away a couple of weeks ago. It was rather sudden. So all of us (his family and friends) stepped up to get this issue out to you, his readers, who he cared so much about. If you are reading this, then we succeeded and he would be proud. So proud. Of course, my Dad will be missed by all. His passion for friends he really knew and future friends yet to know. His huge parties for fellow choir members and pastors alike. His larger than life personality bouncing out of that elevator at his house. His snoring heard from the infamous “Jim’s reclining chair, don’t sit there.” His endless energy to publish this magazine, even at age 79 and in poor health. His vast knowledge of everything and anything on the Farm. And yes, of course, everything else… Thank you Dad.

A Tribute to Jim... By Tim McCray Ad Manager Midwest Beef Producer Magazine
Nearly 8 years ago, I ventured into the Midwest Beef Producer office to have an interview with Jim Sample. What started out as an interview quickly turned into a conversation about an industry, in which I had little to no experience in. Since I possess a media background, I was quite interested in this new opportunity, and I had the impression I could bring some new help to this man and a magazine he was so passionate about. His passion. I could see it at that first meeting, almost every single day that we worked together, and the last day of his life. The event of his passing has made me (and I’m sure others) reflect on life’s opportunities, friendships, and meanings. Jim’s health has been on the decline for the last few years now. Most everyone knew by his editorials, he had been searching for a kidney transplant. Aside from that, he’d also had a few heart surgeries and back surgeries as well. Despite all of that, he still made it to the office practically every day. I was amazed when he would make it into the office in the afternoon, even though he had had dialysis that morning. After a few years, I think we both became more comfortable with each other, and our roles within the company. He learned to trust me more and I learned to be patient with him. I also learned to double check his work, something else that was rather new to me. So, we persevered. Again, that passion and drive for this magazine and industry. Jim and I accompanied each other on several trips to cattle tours, sales and other events. As I look back on that, we shared quite a bit in those long car drives. One of the last trips we went on was to North Dakota and he was constantly needing a cane, by this point, but was stubborn enough to think he didn’t. I was also with him the day he got a call form his nurse about his heart, and even though it sounded serious, he assured me all was fine, and we went on to the sale. He ended up in urgent care later that night, thanks to Betsi, but not until after we had made it to that sale and stayed for its closing. Stubborn. But.. passionate too. With Jim’s kidney dialysis taking up his time 3 days a week, I started having to attend these tours and other events on my own. Of course, he was still hands-on, and I would frequently give him updates from my hotel room about how the day’s tour went. 18
I finally succeeded in getting him some decent pictures to work with (I had a faulty camera before) and before I had left, I had made sure to set up his computer at home so he could be doing layouts on our next issue. As is usually the case in the publishing business, we had a deadline looming over as I was wrapping up my trip to the stock show this year. We were also working against another deadline as Jim had a back surgery scheduled for just after our February deadline. A tight window, and we managed. The surgery went well, just about to get released, and he had suffered another setback. This time due to his diabetes, but he got stable again, and managed to make it home. Once again, assuming he would start working on our march issue, I set up his computer for him after he had returned form the hospital and we visited for about 2 hours. We talked about his surgery, how he was pleased with the February issue being mailed but hadn’t arrived yet. We talked about our many years together working on this business of his. We talked about what I would bring him from the office tomorrow. Said our goodbyes, and he thanked me. Which wasn’t all that unusual either. Just about anytime I left the office, he always said thank you for all you do as I was walking out the door. So him telling me thank you yet again, wasn’t unusual. Then he reached out his hand and shook mine as he was thanking me for what would be the last time. A few hours later he was gone. So, it all started and ended with a 2 hour conversation. Or maybe it was all 1 conversation spread out over many years? We talked quite a bit in that time frame about what he wanted for the magazine, should anything happen to him. He was stubborn enough to assure me he was going to live to be 100. I think in the end, he was happy with what he had accomplished. I’m also sure he was quite upset that he wasn’t at the office the next day. If you’re reading this, it means Jim’s hopes were fulfilled. Thank you sir, for sharing your life and your passion with me for the last 8 years. It was a pleasure to work along side you, and share in your life this short time.

Eulogy for James A. Sample Delivered February 8, 2020 By Joseph T. Sample
Thank you for being here today in this great Lutheran Church to participate in a Celebration of Thanksgiving for the wonderful, talented and wellknown life of my brother, Jim Sample. My name is Joe Sample of Garner, North Carolina and I would like to take a few moments to share some remembrances of Jim, a Cracker-Jack of an engaging and the most out-going dude. You know, Jim has always been older than me for as long as I can remember. I firmly believe our mother fed him extra helpings of “Gro Pup” for he stretched upward over six feet tall. I must have only received the scraps since Tall was never an adjective used to describe my stature. So I have had to spend my entire life looking up to Jim, in more ways than one. Our formative years were spent on a central Indiana livestock and grain farm. We plowed and planted. Tended livestock. Hunted and trapped in the woods. Once Jim trapped a skunk but had not carried the necessary gun to send the skunk to glory so of course the skunk quickly dispatched some “odiferous perfume”. This showed the rest of our farm folk that we weren’t really good trappers. Since Jim was older and taller, he got to drive the March 2020
tractor while I was relegated to other tasks. For instance, I had to load what the livestock left in the barn all winter while Jim got to drive the tractor to the fields with the spreader. Jim was self-appointed to drive the tractor with the hay baler while I had to walk behind and lift the 60-pound bales of hay onto the farm wagon. Jim was an “A+” fellow, but really his life was full of “F’s”. For instance, one “F” was for farming. Growing up on the farm was that agrarian experience which was so formative that it forever changed his life. Thus he spent most all of his adult years toiling in the field of agriculture. He was schooled at Cornell University where he was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Communications. That degree taught him the artistry of writing about farming as well as the business and economics of farming – especially livestock. Then his economic skills were further honed when he earned a Master’s of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from Michigan State University. For many of you, the intervening years are equally well known. There were his years in the US Air Force where he attained the rank of Captain, then his decade of service in the agricultural sector at E.I duPont Company plus his work in public relations working for various companies in Cleveland, Chicago and Minneapolis.

Then the whole shebang came in sync when he founded the Midwest Beef Producer magazine nearly a quarter century ago – here he cobbled together his agricultural and economic knowledge while putting ink on paper to help the beef industry in the upper Midwest. Interestingly, his Master’s thesis laid out the blueprint for this very idea. Whatever project or task Jim undertook, he always exhibited a strong work ethic, an unwavering dedication, outstanding creativity, and dynamic leadership qualities. Bro. Jim early on sported a talent for creative thinking and writing. Our sister Elizabeth fondly recalls the time when Jim explained the price of an ice cream cone. “How much was it?” she inquired. “Three thin dimes” he replied. Others, she noted, would have just said 30 cents. He had that editorial knack of saying something in such a way that it was different and interesting. If you asked him about pasta, for instance, he might start the answer by explaining the attributes of Durham wheat from which the pasta was made, plus he would hold your attention throughout the explanation.
for more than a decade. He wasn’t an accomplished pianist, but he did know how to tickle the ivories in such a way that made you tap your toes to the beat. He could play numerous hymns and any number of other musical genres. One time we both attended a national agricultural meeting in Chicago and some corporate sponsor held an open house in a large suite of rooms. Jim was there and a piano was there. The rest, as they say, was history. Next thing you know, Jim was at the keyboard belting out such rousing sing-a-long ditties as “If you knew Susie” or “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree” or “Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag”. Soon dozens of people had gathered around Jim at the piano yelling out requests to play this song or some goldie oldie melody. He kept his song-bird talents sharp throughout life, and many here today can attest to his vocal prowess. He has vocalized with numerous choirs, especially at this beautiful Lutheran Church. He sang for many years in the choir at the Minnesota 9-11 Tribute, and later proudly served, with distinction I’m told, as a Director and lastly as Board Chair.
Another “F” was for friends. He possessed them by the tractor-trailer load. Friends from high school, college, church, Masons and the Air Force, just to name a few. Friends cultivated throughout life. He stayed in touch with all of them. Sister Louise and I attended a huge function at Purdue University just a year ago, and the Master of Ceremonies later told us how much Jim had meant to him over the years.
What you may not know is that during his first week at Cornell University, he auditioned with the renown University Glee Club. At the first rehearsal, the director announced that the entire Glee Club of more than a hundred would perform at the Kremlin in Moscow on Christmas Day,then in Westminster Abby in London on New Year’s Day. Jim was so talented. I’m not brave enough to even sing in the shower…
Still another “F” is for family. He dearly adored his wife, Betsi, and progeny [you know that’s a livestock term for children]. But he also kept in touch with siblings, nieces and nephews, and Lord knows cousins by the dozens. He made a special effort to attend anniversaries, funerals, reunions, weddings, and other extended family functions. And many times he was the life of the party as he was the master raconteur of family stories.
Jim loved cooking ~ and consuming the results. He was a master chef at home in his kitchen, in my kitchen when he came to visit, in our mother’s kitchen or elsewhere in anybody’s kitchen. If he was coming for Christmas or other holiday event, he’d pre-cook select items to warm and place on the table. He started cooking at an early age on the boyhood farm. Making a pie was one of his early specialties. I’ve never had anything as tasty since.
I can’t leave out another “F” – Music. [Well, I just told a dinky – nawww a large Pinocchio - about the “F”. Everyone knows you can’t spell music with an “F”] Jim steadfastly took piano and voice lessons
[A short remembrance, please: The old drafty farmhouse we grew up in was heated with a coal furnace. One cold Saturday night, Jim was making his favorite specialty pie with meringue topping.

March 2020
He had just finished browning the meringue in the oven when the old furnace belched worse than a bloated cow. Suddenly, extremely fine coal dust covered everything in the kitchen – including the white meringue topping which was now coal-dust black. He was heart-sick! He remembered that Mother had always preached to not be wasteful. Soooo, Jim scraped off some of the coal dust, and proceeded to eat the pie – the entire pie -- dust and all. And you wonder why he was tall.] Jim’s life centered around family, friends, agriculture, music and, of course, his church where his faithfulness has surely been noted in the Book of Life. I don’t want to imply that Jim’s life was a bed of roses. In the last number of years, his health was nothing to be jealous of. He endured open heart surgery. His back was broken on more than one occasion. Surgeries followed. He suffered from Type2 diabetes and, eventually, his kidneys failed. He experienced several years of physically demanding thrice-weekly dialysis sessions. But he faced these
challenging events with eternal hopefulness. Plus faith in his Lord. On behalf of Jim’s family and extended family, thank you for your attendance here today to pay homage to a giant of a man – a husband, father, brother, uncle and cousin -- who unselfishly shared his many talents with those whom he loved and found great satisfaction therein. Will you pray: Oh God: We love you. Thank you for giving us Jim Sample to love and enjoy these last nearly four score years. Let us always remember his joyous spirit, bubbling personality and his steadfast joy of living. The many ways in which he has touched our lives, and we’re so grateful for those unforgettable times. While You allowed him to be with us, our lives were forever changed and deeply enriched in immeasurable and treasured ways. We know that he is resting beyond the river and now a vital part of Your heavenly choir. For Jim, now there is no more pain, no more tears. Please grant us eternal salvation so that we may join Jim in Your presence. Amen.

Coronavirus Still a Threat to Livestock Markets
economy out of the water [then] I think we would be understanding of that all.” Perdue said if China doesn’t import U.S. ag goods because of the coronavirus and instead only imports ag goods from other countries, it would be the job of the U.S. Trade Representative office and President Donald Trump to potentially be understanding or take action. This comes at a time when the U.S. and China recently signed a Phase 1 trade agreement.
and how it may impact beef exports in 2020.
Perdue talked to the media and said how it’s hard to know how long the coronavirus will be an issue. This comes during a time when China is supposed to buy more ag goods following the Phase 1 trade agreement.
At the same time, Bloomberg is reporting that China ordered about 10 cargoes of soybeans the week of February 2 from South America, despite China’s coronavirus concerns.
“From the United States’ perspective, we would be understanding,” said Perdue. “Like I said, if we don’t see [China] going to other places and trying to fulfill those needs other places, if they’re really trying and blowing the
The coronavirus discussion at the Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show didn’t stop with USDA’s ag secretary Sonny Perdue. Producers and economists alike are trying to figure out just how long it will impact the markets
“We don’t know when this coronavirus will be corralled,” said Perdue. “We don’t know how long it will go on.” “We could be two to three weeks away from finding out [if] it’s a much bigger scale than it appears right now,” said Derrell Peel, an extension livestock specialist with Oklahoma State University. “If that happens, then I think we have to be very concerned about it. It could have an impact on not only them, but really, on a global scale.”
Betsy Jibben The fate of the coronavirus still impacts the cattle markets. Earlier at the Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show, USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue addressed the scare of the coronavirus to the beef industry. It still remains a threat today.

“It scares me,” said Dale Cambre, a cattle producer from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. “It should scare anybody. We just don’t know what’s going to happen.” Whether you talk to cattle producers or the Secretary of Agriculture, the fate of China’s coronavirus problem is uncertain to those at the Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show.
March 2020
It raises a concern about impacts to China’s gross domestic product following quarantines and travel bans. “The business travelers around Asia are staying at home and not going on the road,” said Will Sawyer, an economist with CoBank. “That’s going to hurt the economic growth in the first quarter. There’s some talk of [China’s GDP] of not 6 percent growth but 3 percent growth. [If realized, it could be] half of what’s expected.” The coronavirus is rocking the livestock markets. The April live cattle contract dropped to its lowest price since October 2 during the week of February 2. A Hong Kong based investment firm, Gavekal Research Ltd., says the coronavirus could potentially peak in early March, according to Bloomberg. China’s Global Times reporting a decision on launching a consultation with the U.S. on the disaster clause is unlikely until the end of the first quarter.

na’s import numbers of U.S. beef yet. “I would say we haven’t seen a slowdown outside of China but it’s probably a little too early to tell [if China is slowing down beef imports from the U.S.],” said Dan Halstrom, the president of USMEF. “We were an $80 million market to China last year. It’s less than one percent [of the U.S. beef market].” As producers are optimistic about the future, they celebrate the victories while watching closely the things they can’t control.
indexes for pork and beef. This index is driven by two primary factors, per capita retail pork (beef) consumption and retail pork (beef) prices.
cial pork production increased 5.0% to 27.6 billion pounds. The 2019 retail pork price was $384.33 cents per pound (nominal), a 2.6% increase over 2018, he says.
As experts expected, final calculations for 2019 demand indexes showed strong increases for both beef and pork, says agricultural economist Len Steiner in his Daily Livestock Report.
Per capita consumption is a measure of product availability, Steiner explains. Demand, on the other hand, is the consumer’s willingness to purchase a good at a given price depending on their tastes and preferences. Prices used in the demand index are deflated using the consumer price index with 2000 as the base year. Pork Demand Index The 2019 pork demand index was 107.44, a 10.1% increase over 2018. “Much of the increase in the demand index is due to per capita consumption which increased 2.6%, over the prior year, to 52.27 pounds per person, the highest level in two decades,” Steiner says.
The Livestock Marketing Information Center (LMIC) calculates demand
In 2019, there was more pork available for consumers to purchase as commer-
2020 Pork and Beef Demand Looks Promising, Steiner Says Jennifer Shike
“In real terms, pork prices increased 0.9%. If pork remains competitively priced coupled with an LMIC forecasted 3.8% increase in pork production, the pork demand index could see further improvements in 2020,” Steiner says. Beef Demand Index The retail all fresh beef demand index value increased 2.3% in 2019 to 109.02 for 2019. This is the highest level since 2015 (111.59), Steiner says. In 2019, per capita retail beef consumption grew 1.3% to 57.95 pounds per person continuing the trend which started in 2014. The most recent high in per capita consumption of retail all fresh beef was 2010 at 59.58. Beef consumption wasn’t the only thing to grow, Steiner explains. Prices grew, too.

Retail beef prices were $581.94 cents per pound in 2019, also increasing 2.3% from 2018 in nominal terms. “In real terms (CPI deflated), retail all fresh beef prices increased 0.6% in 2019,” Steiner says. “In 2020, beef supplies are expected to tighten on lower available cattle supplies which may push cattle prices higher, possibly impacting retail prices and perhaps shrinking the demand index.” The demand index increases for pork and beef were good indications that demand was strong in 2019. This was a positive sign given production increased for both meats, he says. In addition to LMIC forecasting increased production again in 2020 for total read meat and poultry, if per capita disposable income continues to increase in 2020, this lends support for continued strength in beef and pork demand this year, Steiner adds.

2020 inflation in grocery store food prices expected to remain low Grocery store food prices in the United States have seen low inflation or deflation since 2015. Given current conditions, ERS expects a continuation of the low inflation trend into 2020. Foodat-home prices are forecast to increase between 0.5 and 1.5 percent, below the current 20-year historic average of 2.0 percent. The previous period of low inflation in retail food prices, which occurred in 2009 and 2010, was due largely to the economy-wide downturn caused by the 2007-09 Great Recession. The current period of low food-price inflation, however, is taking place during a time of U.S. economic expansion. Contributing factors for this period of low food-
Midwest Beef Producer
price inflation include retail pricing strategies, efficient food supply chains, slow wage growth, and relatively low oil prices. Within grocery sub-categories, price changes in 2020 are expected to vary. More information on ERS’s monthly food price forecasts can be found in the ERS Food Price Outlook data product, which will be updated on February 25, 2020.

Better beef begins in pastures just like ours all over America. Yet, not all beef that leaves pastures and moves through the supply chain is equal. Better beef begins with proven genetics, better health, proper nutrition, disciplined selection and a keen commitment to best practice welfare. Better beef begins with opportunity. Wulf Cattle customers have trusted the process and taken advantage of opportunities for sustainable profit for more than 40 years.
