Alyce Kuenzli and Lisa Pugh Source of Confidence is a new organization based in Minneapolis. Started by three Minnesotans, our mission is to support girls & women in navigating their own paths to confidence. Alyce Kuenzli, Co-founder & Adventure Educator, holds a BA in Education & Youth Studies. Alyce has worked for several nonprofits involved in youth development. In 2014 she canoed the Mississippi River source to sea. Lisa Pugh, Co-Founder & Adventure Educator holds a degree from the University of MN in Fisheries & Wild Life. Lisa currently works as an Outward Bound instructor in Ely, leading canoeing expeditions in the summer & dogsledding expeditions in the winter. Viki Carpenter, Co-Founder & Artistic Director, is a multimedia artist, with a passion for facilitating as many dialogues as possible via her art. She recently completed a video project in collaboration with the Bdote Learning Center, for the National Institutes of Health storytelling challenge.

On November 27th, 2016 Lisa Pugh and Alyce Kuenzli became the first all female expedition to canoe the 4th longest river system in the world. Starting in southwestern Montana on May 11th, they hiked to Brower’s Spring, the ultimate source of the Jefferson-Missouri-Mississippi River system.Come hear stories from their 200-days canoe expedition that covered over 4,000 miles, and passed through 14 states. They’ll talk about how they shared their confidence-building curriculum along the way and filmed the experience for a future documentary. Currently working to develop programming for women and girls in Minnesota, and partnering with local schools and much more, the journey still continues and they are excited to share the adventure and their work at the Expo this spring.

A New Lesson in Suffering!

Join Brian Block a born and raised Midwesterner (that’s right, born and raised in Iowa) as he takes you to the top of the tallest mountain in the world! In this presentation Brian will revisit his journey into the Himalaya as part of an expedition in his 7 Summits Quest to climb Mt. Everest during the spring of 2011. Brian’s show is an amalgam of photos and videos taken during his five weeks spent in Nepal. With spectacular pictures from amazing places coupled with true stories of life and death struggles to survive in the Death Zone this presentation is sure to excite! During his adventures on Everest’s South Col Route Brian not only got to see some amazing views, he also contended with the notorious Khumbu Ice Fall, 5-ladder crossings over giant crevasses, storm winds in excess of 100mph, Avalanches, climbing above 26,000 feet without oxygen or direct Sherpa support. Throw in a faulty Oxygen Mask, and an “unsurvivable” case of pneumonia and you have an account that definitely keeps things interesting.

The focus of this presentation is on how to “tune” a canoe for casual and wilderness travel.

To stay warm, dry and in command on a canoe trip when the weather howls bloody murder, requires good gear and superior skills. In this fast-paced session, we’ll take a hard look at what works best for canoeing and why. Much of today’s outdoor gear is designed for hunters and anglers, backpackers and climbers, not for wilderness canoeists and kayakers. Cliff will outline some “equipment peeves”—focusing on features that are flawed for canoeing. Then, it’s on to principles of outdoors clothing design, followed by a nose to toes review of the clothing and personal gear you need for a wilderness canoe trip. Included, are tips for drying clothes in the field on rainy days when there is no warming sun or camp fire.

A Year in the Wilderness

On September 23, 2015, Dave and Amy teamed up with the Campaign to Save the Boundary Waters and embarked on a yearlong adventure in the BWCAW The Freemans traveled roughly 3,000 miles by canoe and ski with sled dogs, visiting about 500 lakes, rivers and streams throughout the year. That's 365 days exploring and documenting the Wilderness with the purpose of keeping America's most visited wilderness area in people's consciousnesses throughout the entire year. They used their adventure as a platform to educate others about the threat posed by Twin Metals and other sulfide-ore copper mines being proposed near the BWCAW. Diverging from the typical expedition approach of traveling from point A to point B, the Freemans entered the wilderness with the intent to bear witness to all the seasons in the biggest wilderness area east of the Rockies and north of the Everglades. They learned to slow down and closely observe what was going on around them– from metamorphosing of dragonflies to the wanderings of a wolf pack. They were out there as ice formed on the lakes and then melted again. They saw the forest awaken and birds return. If you love the Boundary Waters or wild places in general, if you're curious about the latest developments in the fight to protect the BWCAW watershed from copper mining, what the Freemans witnessed, how their relationship fared, lessons they learned, or practical tips for doing an expedition of your own, this presentation and short film are a must-see.

Reflections from 30,000 miles of adventuring by canoe, kayak and dogsled

Amy Freeman Amy Freeman takes a look back at the past ten years spent adventuring with her husband, Dave. Together they have traveled 30,000 miles by canoe, kayak and dogsled throughout North and South America. She’ll share some of their favorite stories and images from the trail, curated from circumnavigating Lake Superior, crossing South America, the North American Odyssey, Paddle to DC and A Year in the Wilderness. From that first 1,200-mile kayak trip together when they had no clue if their relationship would withstand the trials of a multi-month expedition to living comfortably and happily in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness for an entire year and everything in between. Machu Picchu and Choquequirao: Trekking Peru’s Sacred Valley Rod and Sharon Johnson

Rod Johnson, owner of Midwest Mountaineering, and his wife Sharon traveled to the Sacred Valley in Peru. They explored the ancient Inca fortress at Ollantaytambo, and then hiked a less-traveled trail to the ruins at Choquequirao. Choquequirao is a ruined Inca city similar to Machu Picchu, but much less visited. It sits high above the Apurimac river, solitary in its ancient splendor. Excavations at the site began in the 1970’s and continue today. From Choquequirao they completed a circuit that brought them finally to Machu Picchu. Everywhere they found evidence of the amazing Inca civilization – from remote, but still usable Inca roads, to ruins of cities and terraces still being uncovered today. Visit the colorful local markets, ancient salt mines and the mysterious terraces at Moray. You’ll see the dramatic beauty of the Andes, the challenge of the multi-day trek, the incredible features of Machu Picchu, and the charms of Aguas Calientes, Ollantaytambo and Cusco. Costs in Peru are really affordable; you don’t have to travel with an expensive adventure travel outfitter. As always, Rod and Sharon will have handouts showing you how they created their trip, with recommendations of what to bring, what to see, and ideas for guides and accommodations.

Exploring Vietnam's Ha Long BayChris Bandy Imagine the sensual green of deep, soft rice paddies, the smiles of Hmong children along trails, the boom of the sea as you paddle under the mountains. All this is possible in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Ha Long Bay. Here, a community of permanently nomadic boat people live their entire lives on water among the 3,000 islands.

NOLS Wound Management Eric Barnard If an accident were to happen while camping, fishing, or playing in the backcountry, would you be ready to react? NOLS Wilderness Medicine instructor Eric Barnard will teach you basic wilderness wounds first aid skills to help you be prepared to act in an emergency. When not teaching for NOLS Wilderness Medicine Institute, Eric works as the Director of the Winona State University Outdoor Education and Recreation Center. In his free time he can be found running around on walls in Zion and Yosemite and going on outdoor adventures with his wife and 3 boys.

The Boundary Waters and the Sustainable Economy of the North Woods Paul Danicic Hear about an innovative new report that shows the economic contribution the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness makes to neighboring communities. Conducted over the 2016 season by the Conservation Economics Institute, this study worked with over a dozen local outfitters and sampled over 500 BWCA permit holders. This is the first-ever scientifically valid assessment of the BWCAW’s economic impact and the first-ever such study of a prominent U.S. Wilderness area. Paul Danicic is the Executive Director of the Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness, a non-profit organization focused on preserving the wilderness character of the BWCAW and the Quetico-Superior ecosystem. Long-distance Hiking on the North Country National Scenic Trail Matthew Davis Did you realize that the nation's longest hiking trail is actually found right here in Minnesota? The 4,600-mile North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT) runs from ND to NY but receives scant use compared to its sister trails like the AT, PCT, CDT, and even the Ice Age Trail in WI. Why is that? This program will provide an overview of the NCT route, discuss challenges inherent to hiking the NCT, and provide helpful resources. Matthew lives in Detroit Lakes, MN and has worked for the NCTA since 2006. Before that, he spent 3 years working on the AT which he has section hiked.

Birding and Adventure Travel in Honduras Wilmer Fernandez This presentation will highlight the opportunities in Honduras for birding and adventure travel, as well as local conservation efforts to preserve habitats. The country offers several habitat types, from rainforest, pine-oak forest, mangrove, sandy beaches to cloud forests. We’ll explore this diversity of ecosystems and see how it provides habitat for nearly 800 bird species.

Many people starting out backpacking find that their pack is too heavy and wish it was lighter, and spend the rest of their life trying to make it lighter. It isn't unusual for the top 3 items to weigh in at 15 lbs, but for Kim, it's about 5 lbs with a pack weight of 20 to 25 lbs for a 5 day trip. Rediscover North America Dan Flynn What’s wrong with an adventure for the sake of adventure?

Circumnavigating Lake Superior Erin Denny and Lexi Bruno During the summer of 2016, Erin and Lexi spent 76 days on the unforgiving waters of Lake Superior as they circumnavigated the shore in sea kayaks. Pushing physical, emotional and mental boundaries along the way, but learning more than they ever thought was possible. Join them as they share their planning (or lack there of), gear, logistics and what help make the trip possible. The vast wilderness, grace of strangers and incredible experiences changed their lives forever.

Erin Denny, 24, from Chisago City, and Lexi Bruno, 22, from Foley, MN both graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth with degrees in Environmental and Outdoor Education.

The John Muir Trail is one of the premier trails in the world, covering 211 miles of some of the finest mountain scenery in the US, starting in Yosemite Valley, and ending on top of Mt Whitney. Besides showing some great pictures from the trail, he’ll talk about obtaining permits, how and where to do food drops, food storage along the trail, and transportation options getting to and from the trail.

In March of 2014, six friends decided to attempt a canoe expedition from the Gulf of Mexico to the Arctic Ocean. Nine months later, they set out to do just that. They battled against the current on the Mighty Mississippi, weathered a winter of snow and ice, traversed massive lakes, dodged constantly shifting forest fires, and shot challenging whitewater. It took eight long months to complete the journey. Join us for a screening of the documentary film that recounts this journey! Dan Flynn is from Saint Cloud. Find Your Park: Minnesota's Voyageurs National Park Christina Hausman

The power and pristine nature of Lake Superior provides a variety of challenges for paddlers, campers and hikers in Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

The Galapagos Islands, some 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, are one of the most unique, pristine and remarkable destinations in the world. Ecuador is home to nearly every ecosystem imaginable.

This presentation will examine some basic principles for paddling safely among the islands and for camping and hiking responsibly in the Lakeshore’s wilderness areas. If you want to chat about the islands, John and Neil will both be available at the Friends of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore booth during the 2017 Spring Expo.

Hunting with Golden Eagles in Mongolia Kim McClusky A few traditional Kazakh hunters still hunt with trained golden eagles in the remote valleys of western Mongolia’s Altai mountains. This presentation will take you inside their gers (yurts) in barren, remote valleys where the eagles are trained. The Kazakhs’ herds run free in these valleys—thousands of camels, yaks, cows, goats and horses. All the training culminates in an Eagle Festival in Ulgii, where 70 hunters on horseback compete in eagle hunting events. Claire spent her childhood backpacking with her parents throughout the Rockies. As a college student she spent summers studying the nomadic Hadza, a huntergatherer tribe in Tanzania. A few years later she solo thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail over five months. She works at the U of M’s Polar Geospatial Center mapping Polar regions and has spent five seasons in Antarctica. Bear Paulsen feels at home exploring wilderness areas throughout North America. He loves canoeing and winter camping because they allow him to take long, extended trips into remote areas. He happily backpacks too. He’s spent well over three years of his life hiding from the real world in tents and under tarps. He has paddled extensively in Ontario, Manitoba, and the BWCA, as well as trips in Saskatchewan, Nunavut, and the Yukon. Winter camping has taken him to four Canadian provinces and eight states. Trail work on the Superior Hiking Trail Han Taylor Last year, 8,000 volunteer hours went into the Superior Hiking Trail – will you be part of the effort in 2017? Han Taylor will share tips and techniques on the maintenance of trail sections and campsites. Check out the tools used in maintenance and learn easy ways anyone can improve the trail. Learn about upcoming opportunities to work on a variety of projects. Everyone is welcome! Han Taylor is the Trail Maintenance Supervisor for the Superior Hiking Trail.
