Radical Reels Tour brought to you by Midwest Mountaineering

U of M, Willey Hall Auditorium Saturday, April 29, 2017 7:30 pm The Banff Mountain Film Festival (held annually in Banff, Alberta Canada from late October into early November) accepts over three hundred mountain films into its competitioin, the top fifty or so are screened throughout the festival. Every year the films feature a range of styles and themes, including climbing, skiing, kayaking, biking, adventure, culture and the environment. So many action films were being submitted to the film festival that they could not fit into the regular screenings, resulting in the creation (in 2004) of the hugely successful Radical Reels evening presentation.

travels each Spring – specifically featuring the dynamic, high-adrenaline films from the festival and complements the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour that travels in November. The focus is on sports such as skiing, climbing, kayaking, BASE jumping, snowboarding and mountain biking.

Now you don't have to journey to Banff each fall to see these exciting films! The Radical Reels Tour contains no duplicate films from the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour held in November.

Radical Reels Tour contains high-adrenaline short films from all outdoor sports.

Tickets are $15.00 each plus tax. Tickets are available: At the store, and online at midwestmtn.com/tickets ($3.00 service fee per on line order).

Please bring your printed receipt and your I.D.as confirmation of ticket purchase. Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable. No ticket sales at the door. No will call.

Doors open at 6:30pm. Seating is general admission. Some content and language may not be appropriate for younger children.

Every attendee must have a ticket. No food or drink allowed in the auditorium. No unauthorized animals or pets will be allowed in University buildings. Seeing Eye or hearing aid dogs under the guidance of a blind or hearing impaired person are allowed by law to access public buildings.

Seating limited to first 1,000 seats sold. Attendees not seated by 7:45pm may lose their seats. All ticket sales are final, there are no refunds.

There is not a better place in the USA to sell a used canoe or kayak than this auction. Located right in the heart of paddling country in Minneapolis, nearly a thousand buyers attend this auction looking to purchase a boat!

RAIN or SHINE!

As a seller, you have an option to set a minimum selling price for your boat. If you choose to do this, you will be charged a $20 fee when you drop your boat off. If your boat sells, the $20 fee will be refunded and your only charge will be a 15% commission. Past auction results show that over 90% of all boats meet or exceed any minimum prices established. You will also be able to receive payment for your boat shortly after the buyer makes payment at the auction.

Ok, so you have decided to sell your boat at the auction. Here is a great, quick tip that will help your boat bring top dollar: tape a note on the boat describing where you used it, how long you have owned it, how it performed or tips for the new buyer.

Put the note in a plastic sheet protector if it is raining.

Inspection at 10:00 am Auction at 11:00 am (Rain or Shine) All buyers will need a bidding number.

Bidding numbers are free.

Terms: Sellers: If sellers choose to set a minimum selling price (a reserve), they will be charged a $20 reserve fee when the boat is dropped off. If the boat sells, that $20 fee shall be reimbursed to the seller. A 15% commission will be charged if the item sells. Sellers will be paid by check on the day of the auction shortly after the purchaser pays for the boat.

Buying a boat at the auction is easy. All you need to do is show your photo ID to the auction staff and you will receive a bidding number and a tip sheet explaining how the auction works. Bidding numbers are free.

The auction starts at 11:00a.m. and the preview hour is from 10:00 – 11:00a.m. We recommend that you arrive by 10:00a.m. so you will have enough time to preview all the boats. Buyers can pay with a Minnesota check, cash or credit card. Still have questions? Please feel free to call auctioneer Tony Elfelt of AAA Auction at 763-421-3044. If you need help determinining what type of boat is best for your needs, bring an experienced friend, or do your homework early. Look for generalities, not necessarily specifics. A great Brand X boat might show up. It could be the perfect boat for you! You will need to know if its hull design fits your paddling style. Consult the current manufacturer’s websites or catalogs. A good one is Wenonahcanoe.com. Click on Resources under Wenonah Canoes and Current Designs Kayaks. They offer generic hull design discussions. Sorry, the Midwest Mountaineering staff, are not available during the auction. We are in the tents selling the new boats and new accessories!

Buyers: Get your free bidding number at the auction. Simply show auction staff a driver's license or proper identification. Buyers shall pay a 10% buyers premium (13% for credit card payment) for all purchases. For example, if buyer purchases a canoe for $500 an additional $50 shall be added to the purchase price. Sales tax also applies.

All boats must be picked up by 2:30p.m. after the auction. Boats are the responsibility of the owner during the auction, and of the new owner as soon as the auctioneer says “Sold!”. Don't forget to bring tie-down equipment to transport your purchase, or buy a rack on sale!

Additional terms: Cash, Minnesota check or Visa / Mastercard / Discover / American Express accepted. AAA Auction and Midwest Mountaineering are not responsible for accidents. No property shall be removed from premises until paid for. Any statement made by the auctioneer on the date of the auction takes precedence over printed matter.

DEMO BEACH RULES: Caution! Early season demos are often subject to very cold water and windy conditions. Accordingly all participants must be 13 years of age or older and 90 lbs or more. Please no dogs allowed on the beach (per city ordinance). Check in at the Midwest Mountaineering tent. All participants must sign the waiver and obtain a wrist strap. Boat vendors will require seeing your wrist strap before allowing you to paddle demo boats. Check in with the manufacturer before using any boats or equipment. Be sure you understand how the equipment works before launching (rudders, foot pedals, adjustable seats etc). Stay close to shore and within the safety boater perimeter. Adhere to all safety boater instructions at all times. Expect to get your feet wet. Bring extra warm clothes. Initiatves from Midwest Mountaineer ing Midwest Mountaineering continues to be a green friend to the outdoor community.

We donate 10% of our pre-tax profits to outdoor groups with environmental or wilderness preservation goals. This past summer, you our customers, voted where we should donate our money. The lucky winner was the Superior Hiking Trail Association. They used a $5,000 grant to help restore the trail north of Grand Marais where flooding had caused bridge washouts. “Linking people with nature,” their motto, is one we can all stand behind. Thank you for voting!

The “Green Line” light-rail connects downtown St. Paul with downtown Minneapolis. The U of M West Bank stop is just 1/2 block from our front door. The “Blue Line” Cedar Riverside stop is just 3 blocks from our door. The environment wins when you ride the rails. Try it. It’s fun!

The solar panels on our roof continue to supplement our energy use. We have switched to all LED bulbs.. We are a Clean Energy Partner with Arcadia Power.

Many building improvements have earned us an “Energy Star Certification.”

Our product selection features gear and clothing made by some of the most energy efficiency minded companies in the world. Merino wool and more down than ever are examples of products that are and always have been great green choices.

Our free coffee which we offer evey day to customers is fair trade and organically grown.

Our Thrifty Outfitters outdoor gear and clothing repair service helps you reuse your old gear. Don’t trash it. Fix it!

We subsidize employees who use public transportation and we pay employees to ride their bikes!

We compost at our Outdoor Adventure Expos.

Alyce Kuenzli and Lisa Pugh Source of Confidence is a new organization based in Minneapolis.

Started by three Minnesotans, our mission is to support girls & women in navigating their own paths to confidence. Alyce Kuenzli, Co-founder & Adventure Educator, holds a BA in Education & Youth Studies. Alyce has worked for several nonprofits involved in youth development. In 2014 she canoed the Mississippi River source to sea.

Lisa Pugh, Co-Founder & Adventure Educator holds a degree from the University of MN in Fisheries & Wild Life. Lisa currently works as an Outward Bound instructor in Ely, leading canoeing expeditions in the summer & dogsledding expeditions in the winter. Viki Carpenter, Co-Founder & Artistic Director, is a multimedia artist, with a passion for facilitating as many dialogues as possible via her art. She recently completed a video project in collaboration with the Bdote Learning Center, for the National Institutes of Health storytelling challenge.

On November 27th, 2016 Lisa Pugh and Alyce Kuenzli became the first all female expedition to canoe the 4th longest river system in the world.

Starting in southwestern Montana on May 11th, they hiked to Brower’s Spring, the ultimate source of the Jefferson-Missouri-Mississippi River system.Come hear stories from their 200-days canoe expedition that covered over 4,000 miles, and passed through 14 states. They’ll talk about how they shared their confidence-building curriculum along the way and filmed the experience for a future documentary. Currently working to develop programming for women and girls in Minnesota, and partnering with local schools and much more, the journey still continues and they are excited to share the adventure and their work at the Expo this spring.

A New Lesson in Suffering!

Join Brian Block a born and raised Midwesterner (that’s right, born and raised in Iowa) as he takes you to the top of the tallest mountain in the world!

In this presentation Brian will revisit his journey into the Himalaya as part of an expedition in his 7 Summits Quest to climb Mt. Everest during the spring of 2011. Brian’s show is an amalgam of photos and videos taken during his five weeks spent in Nepal. With spectacular pictures from amazing places coupled with true stories of life and death struggles to survive in the Death Zone this presentation is sure to excite!

During his adventures on Everest’s South Col Route Brian not only got to see some amazing views, he also contended with the notorious Khumbu Ice Fall, 5-ladder crossings over giant crevasses, storm winds in excess of 100mph, Avalanches, climbing above 26,000 feet without oxygen or direct Sherpa support. Throw in a faulty Oxygen Mask, and an “unsurvivable” case of pneumonia and you have an account that definitely keeps things interesting.

The focus of this presentation is on how to “tune” a canoe for casual and wilderness travel.

To stay warm, dry and in command on a canoe trip when the weather howls bloody murder, requires good gear and superior skills.

In this fast-paced session, we’ll take a hard look at what works best for canoeing and why. Much of today’s outdoor gear is designed for hunters and anglers, backpackers and climbers, not for wilderness canoeists and kayakers.

Cliff will outline some “equipment peeves”—focusing on features that are flawed for canoeing. Then, it’s on to principles of outdoors clothing design, followed by a nose to toes review of the clothing and personal gear you need for a wilderness canoe trip. Included, are tips for drying clothes in the field on rainy days when there is no warming sun or camp fire.

A Year in the Wilderness

On September 23, 2015, Dave and Amy teamed up with the Campaign to Save the Boundary Waters and embarked on a yearlong adventure in the BWCAW The Freemans traveled roughly 3,000 miles by canoe and ski with sled dogs, visiting about 500 lakes, rivers and streams throughout the year. That's 365 days exploring and documenting the Wilderness with the purpose of keeping America's most visited wilderness area in people's consciousnesses throughout the entire year. They used their adventure as a platform to educate others about the threat posed by Twin Metals and other sulfide-ore copper mines being proposed near the BWCAW. Diverging from the typical expedition approach of traveling from point A to point B, the Freemans entered the wilderness with the intent to bear witness to all the seasons in the biggest wilderness area east of the Rockies and north of the Everglades. They learned to slow down and closely observe what was going on around them– from metamorphosing of dragonflies to the wanderings of a wolf pack. They were out there as ice formed on the lakes and then melted again. They saw the forest awaken and birds return. If you love the Boundary Waters or wild places in general, if you're curious about the latest developments in the fight to protect the BWCAW watershed from copper mining, what the Freemans witnessed, how their relationship fared, lessons they learned, or practical tips for doing an expedition of your own, this presentation and short film are a must-see.

Reflections from 30,000 miles of adventuring by canoe, kayak and dogsled

Amy Freeman Amy Freeman takes a look back at the past ten years spent adventuring with her husband, Dave.

Together they have traveled 30,000 miles by canoe, kayak and dogsled throughout North and South America. She’ll share some of their favorite stories and images from the trail, curated from circumnavigating Lake Superior, crossing South America, the North American Odyssey, Paddle to DC and A Year in the Wilderness. From that first 1,200-mile kayak trip together when they had no clue if their relationship would withstand the trials of a multi-month expedition to living comfortably and happily in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness for an entire year and everything in between.

They’ve seen their fair share of amazing creatures too...humpback whales in the Pacific Ocean, two-toed sloths, piranhas and anacondas in the Amazon, grizzly bears and caribou in northern Canada, and gray wolves and moose in Minnesota’s own backyard—the BWCAW. She’ll also share some tips about their motivation and how to muster up the time, money and confidence to take off on an extended adventure of your own.

Machu Picchu and Choquequirao: Trekking Peru’s Sacred Valley Rod and Sharon Johnson

Rod Johnson, owner of Midwest Mountaineering, and his wife Sharon traveled to the Sacred Valley in Peru. They explored the ancient Inca fortress at Ollantaytambo, and then hiked a less-traveled trail to the ruins at Choquequirao. Choquequirao is a ruined Inca city similar to Machu Picchu, but much less visited. It sits high above the Apurimac river, solitary in its ancient splendor. Excavations at the site began in the 1970’s and continue today. From Choquequirao they completed a circuit that brought them finally to Machu Picchu. Everywhere they found evidence of the amazing Inca civilization – from remote, but still usable Inca roads, to ruins of cities and terraces still being uncovered today.

Visit the colorful local markets, ancient salt mines and the mysterious terraces at Moray. You’ll see the dramatic beauty of the Andes, the challenge of the multi-day trek, the incredible features of Machu Picchu, and the charms of Aguas Calientes, Ollantaytambo and Cusco. Costs in Peru are really affordable; you don’t have to travel with an expensive adventure travel outfitter. As always, Rod and Sharon will have handouts showing you how they created their trip, with recommendations of what to bring, what to see, and ideas for guides and accommodations.

The Boundary Waters and the Sustainable Economy of the North Woods Paul Danicic Hear about an innovative new report that shows the economic contribution the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness makes to neighboring communities.

Conducted over the 2016 season by the Conservation Economics Institute, this study worked with over a dozen local outfitters and sampled over 500 BWCA permit holders. This is the first-ever scientifically valid assessment of the BWCAW’s economic impact and the first-ever such study of a prominent U.S. Wilderness area.

Paul Danicic is the Executive Director of the Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness, a non-profit organization focused on preserving the wilderness character of the BWCAW and the Quetico-Superior ecosystem. He truly enjoys sharing this treasure with others.

Long-distance Hiking on the North Country National Scenic Trail Matthew Davis Did you realize that the nation's longest hiking trail is actually found right here in Minnesota? The 4,600-mile North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT) runs from ND to NY but receives scant use compared to its sister trails like the AT, PCT, CDT, and even the Ice Age Trail in WI. Why is that? This program will provide an overview of the NCT route, discuss challenges inherent to hiking the NCT, and provide helpful resources.

Matthew lives in Detroit Lakes, MN and has worked for the NCTA since 2006. Before that, he spent 3 years working on the AT which he has section hiked.

Birding and Adventure Travel in Honduras Wilmer Fernandez This presentation will highlight the opportunities in Honduras for birding and adventure travel, as well as local conservation efforts to preserve habitats. The country offers several habitat types, from rainforest, pine-oak forest, mangrove, sandy beaches to cloud forests. We’ll explore this diversity of ecosystems and see how it provides habitat for nearly 800 bird species.

Many people starting out backpacking find that their pack is too heavy and wish it was lighter, and spend the rest of their life trying to make it lighter. It isn't unusual for the top 3 items to weigh in at 15 lbs, but for Kim, it's about 5 lbs with a pack weight of 20 to 25 lbs for a 5 day trip. Kim will discuss different options to guide you toward picking out the gear that’s best for you!

Circumnavigating Lake Superior Erin Denny and Lexi Bruno During the summer of 2016, Erin and Lexi spent 76 days on the unforgiving waters of Lake Superior as they circumnavigated the shore in sea kayaks. Pushing physical, emotional and mental boundaries along the way, but learning more than they ever thought was possible. Join them as they share their planning (or lack there of), gear, logistics and what help make the trip possible. The vast wilderness, grace of strangers and incredible experiences changed their lives forever.

Erin Denny, 24, from Chisago City, and Lexi Bruno, 22, from Foley, MN both graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth with degrees in Environmental and Outdoor Education.

The John Muir Trail is one of the premier trails in the world, covering 211 miles of some of the finest mountain scenery in the US, starting in Yosemite Valley, and ending on top of Mt Whitney. Besides showing some great pictures from the trail, he’ll talk about obtaining permits, how and where to do food drops, food storage along the trail, and transportation options getting to and from the trail.

In March of 2014, six friends decided to attempt a canoe expedition from the Gulf of Mexico to the Arctic Ocean. Nine months later, they set out to do just that.

They battled against the current on the Mighty Mississippi, weathered a winter of snow and ice, traversed massive lakes, dodged constantly shifting forest fires, and shot challenging whitewater. It took eight long months to complete the journey.

Join us for a screening of the documentary film that recounts this journey!

Dan Flynn is from Saint Cloud. He loves canoeing in the wild and being creative. Naturally, making the film, Rediscover North America, was a perfect fit.

Find Your Park: Minnesota's Voyageurs National Park Christina Hausman

The power and pristine nature of Lake Superior provides a variety of challenges for paddlers, campers and hikers in Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

The Galapagos Islands, some 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, are one of the most unique, pristine and remarkable destinations in the world. Ecuador is home to nearly every ecosystem imaginable.

This presentation will examine some basic principles for paddling safely among the islands and for camping and hiking responsibly in the Lakeshore’s wilderness areas. If you want to chat about the islands, John and Neil will both be available at the Friends of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore booth during the 2017 Spring Expo.

After a 20-year quest to kayak to all the islands, John retired from his law practice and wrote, Apostle Islands Water Trips, An Explorer’s Guide and Two Decades of Memories, a paddling guidebook and record of some of his personal experiences in the Apostle Islands. Neil began his 33-year tenure as a ranger at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in 1983. He recently retired from his role as the park’s Assistant Chief of Interpretation and Education.

Solo Circumnavigation of Lake Superior: 25 Years in the Making Ben Herman In 1991, two of Ben’s close family friends made a circumnavigation of Lake Superior. Those stories made an impression and 25 years later, a big support network that helped him complete the same trip in 53 days.

Hunting with Golden Eagles in Mongolia Kim McClusky A few traditional Kazakh hunters still hunt with trained golden eagles in the remote valleys of western Mongolia’s Altai mountains. This presentation will take you inside their gers (yurts) in barren, remote valleys where the eagles are trained. The Kazakhs’ herds run free in these valleys—thousands of camels, yaks, cows, goats and horses. All the training culminates in an Eagle Festival in Ulgii, where 70 hunters on horseback compete in eagle hunting events.

For the last 20 years Kim has guided paddling, trekking and rafting trips to remote places around the world. He was recently at the Eagle Hunting Festival in Mongolia and plans to return in October.

The Ice Age National Scenic Trail is a 1,100-mile hiking trail that travels along the edge of where those glaciers rested. And speaking of snow and ice, we will also be highlighting some of the best places to go snowshoeing on the trail.

Todd McMahon, known as Tman in backpacking circles, has hiked over 600 miles of the North Country Trail in Minnesota and all 1100 miles of the Ice Age Trail in Wisconsin. He is known for photographing the trails he hikes so expect plenty of photographs in his presentation.

Spring & Summer Bike Commuting Lisa Olson This program will focus on commuting in the Twin Cities as the weather warms up. You will learn how to dress appropriately for the weather, equip and maintain your bike for changing trail/road conditions, and I will share resources for different routing options in the spring season, transitioning to summer. This is my favorite time of the year to cruise around and I can't wait to see more butts on bikes this season!

Lisa is a mechanic at The Hub Bike Co-op and races with Koochella cycling team. She’s always had a bike, but it wasn't until she sold her car two years ago that it became her main form of transportation.

Claire spent her childhood backpacking with her parents throughout the Rockies. As a college student she spent summers studying the nomadic Hadza, a huntergatherer tribe in Tanzania. A few years later she solo thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail over five months. She works at the U of M’s Polar Geospatial Center mapping Polar regions and has spent five seasons in Antarctica.

Bear Paulsen feels at home exploring wilderness areas throughout North America. He loves canoeing and winter camping because they allow him to take long, extended trips into remote areas. He happily backpacks too. He’s spent well over three years of his life hiding from the real world in tents and under tarps. He has paddled extensively in Ontario, Manitoba, and the BWCA, as well as trips in Saskatchewan, Nunavut, and the Yukon. Winter camping has taken him to four Canadian provinces and eight states. Bear is the General Manager of Northstar Canoes.

Bear, a frequent solitary conversationalist, has completed many extended solo trips. He’ll discuss how solo travel differs, planning considerations, and safety concerns. He’ll examine solitude philosophically through personal experience and authors’ writings.

The Twin Cities Metro Area is home to a remarkable diversity of wild mammals. Though often illusive, they leave behind tracks and sign for us to see. Over the years, the Minnesota Wildlife Tracking Project has identified the tracks and sign of a wide range of mammals in the metro area including river otter, black bear, and even a transient mountain lion.
