what is
activity based working?
Activity Based Working is a human-centric concept that thinks of work as an activity rather than a place. It is an office design that incorporates various zones to serve different purposes. This allows employees to choose the work setting that is best suited to their task.
Traditionally, employees were restricted to a single desk or a meeting room. Thanks to innovative technology and the adoption of agile working, today, the office has changed substantially. Flexibility is now built into the very walls of an activity based office.
For example, an employee might prefer to work on a time-critical project in a silent space in the morning and move to the collaboration space for a team brainstorming session in the afternoon.
Dedicated spaces such as collaboration zones, social zones, silent zones and learning zones are beneficial because the environment you work in has the power to impact productivity, wellbeing and innovation. When an employee enters a zone, it must be easy to gauge what the space is intended for. This can be achieved through sensory cues such as hearing the radio in the social zone or seeing ‘quiet’ signs in the silent zone.
How the space looks and feels is also important to consider. Creating an inspiring and comfortable atmosphere through technology, furniture and décor in the office can lead to improved employee satisfaction, business loyalty and productivity. Additionally, better space management leads to fewer costs.
Activity based working encourages employees to be flexible, allowing them to choose the space that empowers them to produce their best work. As we’ve shifted into agile working, businesses must future-proof their office to withstand the everchanging demands of the workforce.
