Day in the life
Carys Green
We spoke to Carys Green, Avixa Women’s Council Leader and Shure Regional Sales Manager, to find out a bit more about her life in the AV industry.
How do you start your workday?
What time does your day start?
How have you adapted to agile working?
What does your job involve on a typical day?
Would your typical day be working in the office, at your home or elsewhere?
What do you listen to when you’re on the road? I normally check my calendar to remind myself if I've got any calls for that day.
That depends on what I’m doing and where I’m going!
My role was fairly agile pre-pandemic. It’s been great to see our customers and end-users also adopt a much more agile way of working. They're now quite happy to do virtual demos. All they really need to do is listen to our microphones. So, I can switch between them and people can hear and experience the difference without necessarily having to physically see the microphones.
Answering stock queries, raising quotes, talking about new products, doing demonstrations, attending trade shows, writing articles…
It’s really a mixture! It’s part of the reason why I love the AV industry. No two days are ever the same. I could be at home, at our Rose Shure Experience Centre in London, or at our office and distribution warehouse in Waltham Abbey. I also make lots of visits to clients and end-users. I really could be anywhere. I recently drove over 1,000 miles in a week!
Radio X is my station of choice. I enjoy the mix of nineties Britpop and modern indie.
What do you enjoy most about working in the AV industry?
What AV industry event do you look forward most to?
Who is one person you work with that makes your day better/easier/more fun?
What do you enjoy most about being on the Women’s Council?
What advice would you give to someone starting out in the industry?
What is your go-to hobby to wind down after work? The people and the relationships that I’ve built up over the years. Also, the tech is constantly moving and evolving. I’ve been in the industry since 2005 and the solutions that we’re selling now are nothing like the solutions that we were selling all those years ago.
The AV Awards are always good fun. I also really enjoy ISE. You get the networking, you get the socializing, and you also get to hear the talks and see the products and understand the new trends.
I’d like to mention Abigail Brown, who sadly passed away in November 2019. Abigail was a close friend of mine and a pioneer for the women’s networking group in the UK. I gained so much knowledge, confidence and positivity from my time with her.
Also, Ali Charters! She’s professional and diligent but she always makes our interactions fun and cheerful. She’s a really good role model for other women in the industry.
Empowering and supporting women in this industry, considering that we are quite underrepresented! The number of technical women is woefully low. So, I relish any opportunity to boost someone’s confidence, grow their network or introduce them to new people.
Don’t be shy! Ask questions. Grow your network. You never know when someone can help you (or when you can help them).
I really enjoy cooking. As far as possible, I’ll always cook something from scratch. It may be something quick and simple, but I’d much rather that than having a ready meal.
