hile neighbouring islands boast glamour and parties, Sifnos – and in particular Cantina – is a wonderful tonic for those looking for something more nourishing. The food is undoubtedly an experience (straw ice cream, anyone?) but the setting is just as inspired. Tucked high up on an outcrop of rock overlooking a beach at the foot of the island’s medieval capital of Kastro, this small whitewashed restaurant feels immersed in nature. The brainchild of Yiorgos Samoilis, the head chef at Omega 3 on the other side of the island (known in equal measure for its experimental raw fish dishes and famous fans including Tom Hanks, Bono and Scarlett Johansson), Cantina opened last July after years of dreaming. “I used

Cantina’s zero-waste, local approach to dining has attracted a loyal following
to walk down here and spend hours looking at the waves crash against Kastro,” Samoilis says. “I fantasised about doing something different.” Different it certainly is. The menu commits to being a zero-waste project, with 90 per cent of food locally sourced. But don’t confuse that with boring. Trained as a molecular biologist, Samoilis has infused the menu with the same sense of energy and experimentation that made Omega 3 so famous. Fries come in the form of melt-in-the mouth chickpea panisse with smoked ketchup, lamb is served as a tartare rather than on a spit –
and if you are struggling to find slipper lobster anywhere else in the Cyclades, your answer lies at Cantina, where it is served with string beans and tomato vinegar. t’s indisputable that a superyacht charter will provide experiences and memories to last a lifetime. But the break itself will only last a week or so. Buy your own island, however, and you can get all the privacy, seclusion and control that a charter represents – and the opportunity to return, for weeks or even months at a time, for years to come. Grønholmane, priced at the equivalent of about £678,000, is a 9,585-square-metre private island in Norway off Manger, about an hour’s drive or a 50-nautical-mile yacht trip north-west of Bergen. Set on the beautiful rock formations are a main cabin, guest cabin, boathouse, heated pool and pier. The word “cabin” is slightly misleading – the main building, with its cosy Norwegian finish in traditional pine, has an open-plan living/dining area with space for sofas, armchairs and a television, plus a table to seat 10 for dinner. Grønholmane has various nooks so you can find a sheltered spot no matter the wind direction, and

both the cottages and the terraces offer stunning views of the water – to which you’ll no doubt want to frequently return.
