PROBLEM FRAMING

More and more children like to play with touch screen rather than doing outdoor activities. For the purpose of attracting them to go outside, we tried to improve playground facilities in parks.

“ Doctors and therapists are raising a red flag — too much screen time can hurt children’s developing bodies.“

14

After 4 times of field research, we found that there are few playground facilities in the park for both children and adults. Most of them have weight limit, so adults can only stand or sit beside to accompany their children.

15

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Blowing bubbles is a beloved entertainment for both children and adults. It also makes beautiful scenery at the same time. While there are bubbles, there are children gathering. Bubbles can not only create public memory, but also link the relationship between people and the environment. We hoped to offer everyone in the park more chances to interact with others, so we decided to use bubbles as one of our design elements.

FINAL PROPOSAL

Bubble Monster is a new type of playground facil-

ity: a huge bubble machine that families can enjoy. Kids can cycle the machine to produce bubbles and parents can hold the handle behind to rotate the machine and control directions. We hope it not only improves the health of the whole family, but also strengthens their bonds between one another.

We would like to invite different artists to paint on

each Bubble Monster, and it will become a unique landmark in different parks.

22

STEP 1 Make the bubble water with your family or friends.

STEP 2 Go to the park and find the machine. Then, feed it with the bubble water you made before.

STEP 3 Cycle the pedals to produce bubbles

STEP 4 Ask your friends or parents to hold the handle in order to rotate the machine.

MOTIVATION

In this project, I thought about what are the features of good

toys. My childhood inspired me a lot. When I was young, I got the greatest joy from simple things such as a piece of paper, a small ball or just our two hands because they could be changed into anything else through imagination. Thus, I believe that the funniest toy is not just an item but a platform for kids to create.

FINAL PROPOSAL

PUPPY LIGHT

Shadow Stage is a game that is based on a tradi-

tional Chinese folk art: shadow play. Children can use the different geometrical units made of Velcro and cellophane to create their own characters and use the Puppy Light to project them on a wall. This helps kids to learn more about the relationship between light and shadow while they are having fun at the same time.

Sunseer Design’s first case was to design three innovative pet products. We tried to understand how is the condition of pet accessories by searching the papers, observing in pet store and interviewing with people who have a furkid.

Young ladies love cat. Elder people love dog. 56

TARGET Based on the research, the proportion of dog owners over the age of 61 is increasing. More and more retired people whose children are married choose to keep a dog. On the other side, most cat owners are college women. Because they have less time to take care of their pets, the independent cat becomes the best choice for them. Our target users are these two kinds of owners.

1. RETIRED PEOPLE WHO KEEP DOG

Elder people / 65 years old / retired / Accompany / Universal design

2. COLLEGE WOMEN WHO KEEP CAT

Unmarried / 20-30 years old / Social need / Sense of achievement / Renting a house

57

MARKETING RESEARCH

We went to pet shops and online stores to inves-

tigate the prices and design features of pet accessories. We found that the prices were M-shaped. There were few products in medium prices, so we took middle level as our market position.

FINAL PROPOSAL BOBOCAT MOMOJUMP

It is an expansible cat tree. The top and the bottom can be sucked to the ceiling and the floor to fix it. It’s easy to storage for women.

It combines the cat tree and the bookshelf so that the cats kept in a small room can also have space to play.

Lift Feeder

It is a burden that elder people have to lean down many times to feed dogs. Lift Feeder is a liftable pet bowl which makes keeping a pet easier.

Food is a kind of social languages

LABORS’ CULTURE

In Taiwan, high percentage of population work as labour. These people hold Taiwanese economy but they are always the silent group in sociality. As a Taiwanese anthropologist once said, “Food is a kind of social languages. “ I hope to let the young know more about the labours’ life through trying their food. Besides, many famous cocktails such as Screwdriver were originated from American labours. Thus, I think the Whisbih culture could become a Taiwanese style mixology in future.

66

WHAT IS WHISBIH?

Whisbih is the tincture made from Ginseng, Szechuan lovage, Angelica roots and vitamins. It can relieve fatigue, restore energy, enhance appetite and supply nutrition. Many labours in Taiwan love to drink it after working.

67

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN WHISBIH AND COCKTAIL How to call

We call Whisbih “Ah bi“, just like one of our friends. In contrast, we do not have a nickname of Vodka.

When & Where to drink

Workers love to drink Whisbih after working in their working place or one of the colleagues’ homes. The young love to drink cocktail in the nightclub on weekend.

68

How to drink

Whisbih is always mixed with other drinks through us-

ing paper cups and disposable chopsticks by the workers themselves. Cocktail is mixed by the bartender.

Why to drink

The he leader of workers used to buy a bottle of Whisbih

to encourage his workers. The young love to order a cocktail to pick up women.

69

FINAL PROPOSAL

The vending machine of Whisbih will be set in nightclubs. There is a dumbbell on each side. People can get free drink through lifting the dumbbell. It can make people experience the feeling of drinking after physical working.

1

Get a papercup-like glass from bartender in the nightclub

2

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Thinking through making workshop is a five day workshop.

In first day, we went to Tai-Yuan road and Shi-Chen Street: A Taiwanese famous place selling useful tools and elements to find anything interesting. The following days, we tried to use the material we chose to develop a new design.

WORK2: Fruit Foam Net Light

I have designed a light made of optical fibers when I was in sophomore. The shape looked just like a fruit net. A teacher advised me that it would be interesting to use the real fruit net as a material, so now I tried to use the net to design a new light in this workshop.

103

When passing by the tank, the under LED light would

light on, enhancing the feeling of floating. When people walked close to the last tank, the sound of bird flapping would be played. In addition, we put a birdcage in the last tank without any bird but a plume to image the concept of Skepticism: Is it a bird that dreams of itself as a fish or is it a fish that dreams of itself as a bird?

We were inspired by the Chinese famous fable, The Butterfly Dream of Chuang Chou.

Chuang Chou was a Chinese philosopher, who is supposed to have lived during the Warring States Period, corresponding to the Hundred Schools of Thought.

106

Once upon a time, Chuang Chou dreamed

that he was a butterfly, a butterfly flitting about happily enjoying himself. He didn’t know that he was Chou. Suddenly he awoke and was palpably Chou. He didn’t know whether he were Chou who had dreamed of being a butterfly, or a butterfly who was dreaming that he was Chou.

INTERACTION

OpenHCI 2014

Intro & Goals What is Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) Human–computer interaction (HCI) involves the study, planning, design and uses of the interfaces between people (users) and computers. It is often regarded as the intersection of computer science, behavioral sciences, design, media studies, and several other fields of study.

Organization of OpenHCI In order to promote HCI, train new talents, and find potential research issues, the master and Ph.D students from the Department of Information in NTU, Design College in NTUST and Program of Digital Content and Technologies in NCU held the OpenHCI Workshop. The core concept of OpenHCI is “learning for practice, learning by doing “. In one week, we invited famous lecturers in different fields to talk about the 2 key concepts of HCI: User Experience Engineering (UXE) and User-Centered Design (UCD). They also taught different aspects and topics to build up the basic knowledge for the students. After the lectures, there were a series of group activities and practice, which led the members to experience the whole process of HCI design. Furthermore, every year, there will be a theme. The members need to design an interaction work. In the last day, we had an interactive exhibition to show the works of every group. All of these works were recorded in the book: Proceedings of OpenHCI ’14 which can be downloaded in our website. OpenHCI is also a bridge to help participators to develop their works into academic essays, join competitions, and make the creation continued. 111

OpenHCI 2014 : Lagontology Lagontology = Lag + Ontology OpenHCI 2014 is the 5th student-organized workshop of Human–computer interaction. We aimed to promote HCI and cross-disciplinary collaboration. The 2014 theme is about “Lag“. Lag was considered as a trouble in our information world. This time, we gave lag a different imagination. For example, sometimes we don’t want to have a call but send a message to others because of the lag of emotion. The participants needed to think what kind of interaction design can represent “Lag“. There are 4 types of lag: 5 senses, time, space, and social. Every group would choose one of them to design.

Design tech My mission in OpenHCI 2014 was teaching the members some design methods, such as Brain Storming and Prototyping. Because the participants were in different majors, in the first day of the workshop, we had a whole day class to teach the basic knowledge of design and Arduino.
