Featured on the site was an assortment of caravans previously used to house artists.

The caravans influenced the overall form, however, a need to open the living spaces was integral to support artist interaction.

Solar panels assist power each of the cabins.

Roof gardens provide resistance to thermal radiation.

Roof sheeting is used as an exterior cladding with operable openings. Planter boxes are placed at each of the openings.

Bathroom options can be ďŹ tted within some of the cabins. Operable shading gives protection to the harsh sun, but also, privacy when needed.

Bladder water tanks are hidden under the living areas which feed water to toilets.

WOODFORD CABIN MODEL

The model is mainly composed of laser cut MDF with spray painted ashing representing recycled corrugated cladding. Additionally, the overall scale provides a means of observing the functionality of the cabin. The model illustrates the adjustability of the living space, with functioning operable sun shading elements. Constructability of the structure can also, be observed as layers of the model are taken apart.

Create innovative methods of providing factual information regarding political issues.

Create connections with adjacent significant buildings that will assist in enhancing the precinct identity.

Implement revegetation of site to create more shading along pathways and to instil a sub-tropical identity.

Develop spaces to showcase innovative sustainable systems as a representation of Brisbane’s vision of sustainability

Develop a unique identity that distinguishes the building as a symbol of political change.

Embed local vegetation internally to enhance visitor experience.

Opportunities for collaboration, open learning and debate, with access to archives and library resources. Open spatial plan will be exposed to political discussion to assist in engaging citizens.

Installation of sustainable systems to assist in the functioning of the design.

HALL OF DEMOCRACY MODEL

The adjacent buildings were also modelled giving context to the design and providing a sense of the building heights relative to its surroundings. The model provides views of the entrances to the site from pedestrian and vehicle routes. Due to its construction, relationships between the internal spatial arrangement of the design and external faced can be observed.

Queensland Preforming Arts Centre (QPAC)

_ _

A greater interaction with the river through design methods. Moving of the Cultural Centre busway to Grey St to lessen vehicle circulation through the site. Creating an underground bus tunnel from Mater Hill to CBD (with inclusion of Cultural centre. Enhancing river walkway and Victoria Bridge for greater pedestrian circulation. The expansion/connection of the precinct to surrounding suburbs: CBD, South Brisbane, West End and North Bank. Further pedestrian walk-ability from central axis of site to riverside. Enhancing the fore-court located in-front of SLQ

Negative spaces located under bridges due to low lighting. Disconnection of site due to Cultural Centre Busway. Harsh afternoon sun on Grey St. Entrances to site are not distinguishable. Some entrances to buildings are somewhat disused. Pathways at points become confusing, due to varying levels and non-cohesive pathways. Slow internet connection.

THREATS _

_

_ _

Rapid increase of visitors to the site consequently congesting some narrow walkways. Greater traffic creating riff between QPAC and the rest of the precinct. The threat of flooding effecting the entire site. Privately owned buildings surround the site, subsequently making expansion of site difficult.

Vignettes of unused spaces within the site.

MASTERPLAN FRAMEWORK

MOVEMENT + ACCESS+ WAYFINDING + To create a more cohesive spatial sequence through the site. + Remove/divert traffic activity from core of precinct.

PRECINCT IDENTITY + To create more pronounced gateways (entrances) to the precinct.

BUILT ENVIRONMENT

CULTURAL PRECINCT VISION CONNECTION + Establish greater connection through the extents of the site. + Expand the sites connections to include adjacent facilities that will assist in defining the precinct.

+ Following the Brisbane River from the Kurilpa Bridge to the Victoria Bridge, the site is dissected by busy streets and the culture centre busway, and has not yet reached its full potential.

+ The new proposed masterplan will assist in creating primary building guidelines that will influence new built form and landscape within the precinct.

+ The Brisbane Southbank Cultural Precinct Masterplan will facilitate a series of interventions aiding various issues highlighted within the analysis. + Changes will also focus on the further integration of the “cultural precinct” into the urban fabric, and blurring the boundaries of the current zoning featured within the site and its surroundings. + Whilst also revitalising the sub-tropical identity present within the precinct.

NATURAL ENVIRONMENT + Design for greater connections to the Brisbane River and further planting of native vegetation.

+ By doing so strengthening the Cultural Precinct and providing a vibrant visitor experience for tourists and locals alike, celebrating and recognising the diversity and strengths of the various institutions in the one location.

SPACES+ PLACES + Convert negative spaces within the site to assist in diversifying additional recreational areas.

+ These fundamental ideas and concepts will be realised in stages of development through the future implementation of the seventh heaven dining hall, innovative extensions to existing facilities and a revitalised ground plane. The new development will furthermore act as a catalyst for future development.

SUSTAINABILITY + All new development proposed as absolutely needed in the further evolution of the precinct.
