01/01 Landscape Design 1 BRIEF Assessment Task 2B – International Measured Drawing Value in the Semester: 20% Produce a model that describes an exemplary international project. Historically, architect and landscape architects learnt how to draw by observing and redrawing the work of others. By seeing how the designers work with proportion, organise different spaces and develop a fully worked through proposition, we can learn from the work of other designers. By looking closely at photographs, and then using this evidence, we can extrapolate the answers we do not know, you hone our ability to harvest information and design strategies from publications. For this project each tutorial is given a different designer to examine the work of and tutors have chosen a series of projects that will be allocated to students, with 5 students doing each project.

BRIEF This report is intended to develop your ability to critically analyse the landscape structure of your study area from above and make recommendations as to whether proposed landscape development(s) will help to protect green spaces in the future.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This report provides a critical analysis and evaluation of the current landscape structure of a selected region within the Rochdale suburb. By achieving this, recommendations will be documented to whether proposed urban developments will protect green space in the future. Your task is to insert the Hall into the Chamber is such a way that the spatial qualities of the two spaces are retained, or even enhanced, while some exciting new spaces are also added to the ensemble. This will mean changing the physical spaces of the two, but keeping the ideas, and the qualities that you have already developed. You must be very careful to dispose of the container but retain the content. This should allow for some very exciting contrasts to be established; contrasts between heroic and humble spaces, materials, scale, surfaces and textures, sound, light and shadow. The client has offered the following description of the new relationship.

BRIEF

TASK

Your task for this assignment is to experiment, test and if necessary change your proposal for its structural stability and constructibility by investigating various structural solutions in consultation with the structural engineers.

You are working as a student-architect for a medium sized architectural practice that specialises in smallscale public building projects. The lead architect is heading out of town for a few days and he wants you to develop your design and explore some ideas about the building’s structural and construction systems.

This drawing is only for refernce purposes. Following drawing will depict design discussed with client and consultant team.

INTRODUCTION

SURFACE RUNOFF

The aim of the assignment is to provid an opportunity to apply in a real context, the theoretical knowledge presented in the lectures and in the reference bibliography. The requirement will be to identify and enquire one architectural element in an urban environment applying the main techniques and tools presented during the semester.

The Illinois and Michigan Canal (I&M Canal) was the final link in a national plan to connect different regions of the vast North American continent via waterways. Its construction played a fundamental role in the growth of many cities along its path (Conzen, 2004). The focus of this essay will be, on the both, I&M Canal and Des Plaines River and developing an understanding of the urban environment. In order to achieve this, an investigation into the watercourses origins and general background was undertaken. This information provided a platform of differing perspectives, by utilising theories of urban environments a reinforced understanding of the relationship between the city and the watercourse will be obtained. This will be achieved by utilising a range of visual methods and an investigation of the urban forms in a range scales.

LEGEND

A canal is defined as an “artificial channel for navigation” (Calvert, 2000). The distinguishable aspect between natural watercourses and canals are of course the manmade aspect, which is associated with canals (Calvert, 2000). Due to this canals are containers of slack or, stagnant water, meaning water with no observable current. In many cases canals were solely built for navigational purposes, this was to be the case for the I&M canal. The I&M Canal stretches 96 miles, connecting Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River via the Illinois and Des Plaines River (Canal Corridor Association, 2009).

OBJECTIVE The core objective of this unit is to develop your skills in collaborative practice in design, research and presentation. The Woodfordia Performers' Precinct project allows you to give your favorite performers the spaces you think they deserve. It is an exploration of residential design on a small but unique scale. The performers at Woodfordia, site for Splendor in the Grass and the Woodford Folk Festival, previously had to stay in a collection of old caravans. These are to be replaced and you are invited to redesign the entire Performer's Precinct. The brief involves internal and external spaces they occupy in a way that suits the inhabitants and the site. Gotye, Coldplay and Kanye West all performed here last year - what would be their dream cabin? This is a real brief - Woodfordia organisers have actually sought your design input into their redesigned Performer's Precinct. The best designs will be presented to them in the hope that they might construct your design in the future (this would be dependant on your consent and an ongoing commitment on your part outside of QUT and this unit).
