U D U P I B H O O M I G AT H Urban Studio Project Location: Udupi, Karnataka, India Ujjwala Chourasia Yogendra Singh Tanya Verma Dhanprakash At the heart of the city, Udupi Bhoomigath provides an extension of the public space in a dense urban fabric and explores the concept of a community-driven urban space. In addition to increase the open public space, it reduces the stress of a quotidian traveller in the transport node of the district. The Bhoomigath provides a subterannean path for connecting across three bus stands providing shelter from harsh climate and at the same time recreating the social and behavorial conditions of the ground. This 250 m long subterranean structure has a central atrium with a sunken square for local traditional performances of art which also functions as a space for public awareness and campaigns. The path is illuminated with light tunnels and ventilated through stack effect which helps recreating ground conditions. Spread over two levels, the play with volumes gives the sense of a market, accomodating informal vendors in the vicinity and giving a sense of ownership to the user who accesses it.

Zoning does not hinder the existing pedestrian flow, and helps retain access to economic activities on the streets. It enables to create a public square for accomodating the informal vendors and cultural activities.

Rendered view of the atrium which is double heighted and serves as a sunken square in a heavily urbanised area where open spaces are scarce.

The performance area is divided by a parametric wall which is permeable, allowing passerbys to glance at the social life that happens. The introduction of lively activities does not render the subway unsafe.

Ample height (4m) of the subway makes it less claustrophobic and allows activities such as vending and gardening which are integral to the local urban matrix.

BRÄNTE Co-Housing Project Location: Holmsund,Sweden Daniel Movilla Vega Esperanza Campana Mette Harder “Bränte“ is a network of living and social spaces that connect and revitalize the East of Holmsund and this starts with centrum. “Something happens because something happens because something happens” a quote of Jan Gehl, has been the guiding principle for the design of this neighborhood. Imagine something like barbecuing in the spring or sunbathing in the summer or just wanting to cook on a lazy day. Neighbourhood has been designed to increase social interactions across dimensions. The ground floor acts as a commercial space and community activities which opens out in to the public square and playground. This housing project is made of CLT which reduces carbon footprint, reduces the construction time and the insulation costs.

RINGS OF LIFE School Design Competition Location: Syria, ubiquitous Team Members Mihir Sriram Sneha Sheela Ramesh Education is a fundamental human right. Only 61% of refugee children attend primary school, mostly in makeshift tents and camps. This deprives them of the quality holistic development they need. The refugee situation demands education and humanitarian help for Yemeni region which has been affected by war since 2011. They are clouded by ruins and under developed facilities and environment. This has a negative mental impact and puts them behind the rest of the world and the current generation. The aim is to provide a fresh start for these young children who will now have the opportunity to heal, learn about life, see colors more than grays in concrete and reds in blood Juror comments : “Mature understanding of the issues and design brief. Clear and legible graphics“

VERTICAL SOCIETY High Rise Project Location: Udupi, Karnataka, India Sonali Walimbe Shriharsh Dixit Situated on the Udupi-Mumbai Highway, this highrise is aims to be an icon in the developing town of Udupi. Equipped with social and recreational facilties, the high rise redefines the use of floor area on high rise. The rotating feature of the high rise gives a different views and vistas from the different units of 1, 2 and 3 bedrooms aimed at various users of the society. The design has aimed to make the construction process efficient by using more precast units. It aims to achieve carbon neutrality by solar panels and water recycling through the STP in the basements. The high rise boasts a restaurant with a 270 degree view of the coastline on the 32 floor. The access is given through the main core, restricting the access to the restaurant only from the ground floor.

A R C H I T E C T ’ S PA R A D I S E Minor Design Exercise Location: Arabian Sea, Off - shore structure Chetna Rao Situated on a 12m x 12 m platform in the Arabian Sea, the design is a proposed design for an architect’s retreat. The design consideration was to use limited number of walls of different heights to create this structure. Conceptualised on the majestic sea creature, the sting ray, the roof shell is organic and has crevices for lighting and ventilation. Due to it’s location and exposure to high winds and rain, the west facade has been designed with higher walls and lesser openings. The north facade has maximum openings to get a 180 degree view. The relaxing and the work area are oriented towards the north for capitalizing on the view.

THE EARTH WHISPERER

concepts

Competition Location: Ulsoor Lake, Bengaluru Team Member : Sneha Sheela Ramesh The Site is located on the banks of Lake Ulsuru in Bangalore. The design process has taken into consideration the concrete footprint of Bangalore and the future probability of increasing. Care has been taken in the choosing the materials and the design principles. Reinforced rammed earth panels has been fabricated with the use of earth from the site and window and door frames from neighboring projects. Air conditioner filters that cannot be recycled or reused, can be retrofitted onto panels which act as louvers. These louvers restrict the entry of harsh light and restrict PM 0.5 and PM 0.5 upto 25% with respect to the exterior.

Two way garbage interface for easy pickup, rather than placing them on the compound walls.

Apart from using plants for achieving air quality, such retrofitting will help upcycling it. The community is at the heart of the design along with the client’s image of the residence. Luxuries spaces have been designed not at the cost of the environment or the community. With very minimum area occupied, the practicalities of the design have been addressed and responding to the immediate social , urban and environmental context.

Traditional architecture couryard that harvests rainwater and with the help of stone tank. It gives coolness as well as improved water retention.
