askervillle was born in the village of Wolverley, and was a printer in Birmingham. He was an English businessman, but the best remembered as a printer and a typographer. His masterpiece, the Holy Bible of 1763, is regarded by many to be the finest book printed in English.

ohn Baskerville’s most notable typeface Baskerville represents the peak of transitional typeface and bridges the gap between Old Style and Modern Type design. 3

he Baskerville typeface is the result of John’s intent to improve upon the types of William Caslon. Emigre released a popular revival of this typeface in 1996 called Mrs Eaves, named for Baskerville’s wife, Sarah Eaves.

H

e increased the contrast between think and thin strokes, making the serifs sharper and more tapered, and shifted the axis of rounded letters to a more vertical position.
