SITE ANALYSIS

STEEPNESS: The difference in height between East and West side of the site is approximately around 20 meters so that the concept is to keep the buildings entirely off the ground to maintain synchronization of heights and accessibility from living area to the common house

According to the wind rose diagram, the southwest wind is most common wind in this area, S out hwest wind accounte d for 11.17% of the year. The explanation for this is the beach lays on the West side of the area. The average wind speed for the whole year is 16.3km/h.

VIEW: On its East side is the view of the sea. Sitting on a slope, it could be believed the site is able to capture the best view of the sea in the neighborhood if designed properly.

The diagrams show the sun path and daylight hours of Marino for the whole year. June has the shortest daylight time, it has 9 hours. D e c e m b e r h a s t h e l on g e s t daylight times, it has 14.5 hours.

ACCESSIBILITY: To be able to access to the site, there are 2 choices, one is to access through the exist road of Westcliff Ct or another choice is to extend the desired part to the Cove Rd. Each option has its pros and cons, thus, depending on the concept of each individual design, the designers can pick either options or even combine together

The temperature here is comfortable, with an average temperature of 17.1 °C throughout the year. June has the lowest average te mp e r atu re, it is 1 1 . 5 ° C . January has the highest average temperature, it is 22.7°C .

PRECEDENT STUDY---- Seoul apartment block by Archihood WXY 1. Introduction of Seoul apartment

This Seoul residential block was designed by local studio Archihood WXY to look like a cluster of four buildings, with each facade featuring a gabled profile in just one corner.

2. Why I choose this apartme

This apartment is quite similar toour idea, because our group topic is sharing is caring, which means the people who live in our apartment need to sharing and kind with other people, in orderto achieve it we should have a public area in our apartment, such as kitchen, and that can make people get to know each otherbetter

3.Our apartment type

We designed the apartment as a circle, the kitchen and activity room in the middle and everyone’s bedroom surrounds the common area while ensuring convenience, it also increases opportunities for people to get to know each other.

ABOUT THE SITE

The co-living site is 23 & 24 Westcliff Court, Marino SA. I take 50 meters as the start point ( ground level 0), the lowest part of the building is 34 (-16 meters below the sea level) and the highest part of the building is 52 (+2 meters above the sea level) The carpark of the community will be put at the east of the community. Because the site is a slope so I use the cutting and fill to make sure the building can be built on that slope and not wasting the space. The community will be design as a multistorey building and the different floor of the building will be connecting with eachother by stairs. To access the community, I decided two ways can let the people access easy. Because the carpark is near the main road so I decided to connect the carpark to the main road that can let the people who are driving a car can access the community more easy, also for the people who are walking or take the public transport they can access the community from the north which is the normal way to access the community, the carpark is also connecting with the community so that can let the people access the community more convenience from the carpark.

12

DESIGN PROCESS Stage 1 design process At the beginning of my design, I built an entertainment area and the shape is similar to the bow, and a elliptical platform was built near the slope below the entertainment area and glass fences were installed on the edge of the platform, and also I designed the platform as a small café area around the entertainment area, which is connected to the entertainment area through a door to make it more convenient for people in and out of the entertainment area and café area. Since the design space of the entertainment area similar to the bow shape cannot meet the needs of people living, I added four floors of living space exclusively for people to live in the existing building, and the elevator connects the floor to ensure that people can move easily.

Stage 2 design process For the stage, two posters My design idea borrowed from the design method of stage one, but I changed the shape of the stage two building. In order to maximize the utilization rate of the site without unnecessary waste of land, I changed the shape of the building to In this way, it can solve the situation that most of the space in stage one cannot be fully utilized due to the triangular design. In addition, I designed the area of the roof of the building as an outdoor activity venue, which can give residents more activity space.

13

ABOUT THE BUILDING Gym : 80 square meters Living room & Kitchen: 82 square meters Library & Computer room: 76square meters Family Room: 4, Total 292 square meters Single Room: 18, Total 162 square meters Couple Room: 9, Total 81 square meters

I designed the house on two floors so that the community can accommodate more people in a limited space. And each floor contains a separate bathroom and kitchen, and I combined the kitchen and rest area into a large room, which can meet the living needs of more people while saving space. At the same time, I designed a public gym on the ground floor of the building so that residents can meet their fitness needs without leaving the community.

14

For the excess roof area, I designed it as an open activity field, so that residents can have more activity space and give everyone more opportunities to get to know eachother

This apartment is located in New York, a multicultural city. The residents of New York come from all over the world. The residents include students, workers, seniors, and travelers. The co living apartment in this city incorporates cultures from all over the world.

Based on research, the main tenet behind co-living is about belonging to a community that’s inclusive, and how it offers an environment of support and collaboration. This makes it easier to have more through shared resources, even when you are the owner of less. This concept is another layer of our platform focused on enabling people to live more fulfilling lives,"

INDIVIDUAL DESIGN - PRECEDENT ROAM - CO-LIVING COMPLEX IN BALI

The Roam complex, as other co-living complexes, follows the standard model of co-housing, which function as a cross between student housing and hotels. However, the project was primarily aimed to be 1 of the destination for occupants who chose to live with the brand so that when the initial concept was crystalized, the cornerstone of Balinese culture was highly highlighted in order to make it distinctive from other branches. Thus, Roam carries itself an unique value when the beauty of Balinese traditional culture combines with domestic details in a contemporary way.

Having a large interest in the newly emerged trend of co-living, Alexis Dornier, a German architect has magically transformed a series of old a ppartment blocks in Bali into a communal co-living project. With an attempt to open a multi-branch co-living brand, along with another in Miami, Alexis has effectively turned the existed outdated buildings into a new settlement for travellers.

INDIVIDUAL DESIGN - STAGE 1 & 2 WORK-IN-PROGRESS STAGE 1 WORK-IN-PROGRESS 1. Unity of information on survey

STAGE 2 WORK-IN-PROGRESS 1. Site Analysis

A survey was conducted to seek answer for an ideal community profile of each in- The first task given to me after the completion of Stage 1 was to conduct a detail dividual which thereby was used as the basic foundation to define and crystalize site analysis to find out the precise information of site slope. In order to accomthe collective ideas of the identity of the community and how should it be. plish this, a second visit to the site was paid. After having enough information, I started to recreate the contour line and eventually rebuild 3D model accurately. 2. Community profile construction Site analysis gave an insight in levelling and the slope of the site. After unifying on the ideal community identity, we started to build our group’s community profile, which is for multicuture and consists of 60 people at min- 2. Proposing detailed design imum. Having the profile as the core information, we then started to develop Implementing detailed design on 3D site model was required as well as proposindividual design concept ing fully furnished plans and sections to demonstrate the design approach and process 3. Research of precedent project Among a list of precedent coliving community project, it was determined that the ROAM of architect Alexis would be my source of precedent research. The research helped me formed the structure of a coliving community as well as inspired me of my potential design concept 4. Design concept development

3. Poster creating Similarly to Stage 1 Poster, Stage 2 Poster was designed after having an adequate amount of material such as detailed section, detailed plans, or 3D model completion. After a few feedback, Stage 2 Poster was finally finalized

With all given information and research, the very fundamental shape of my design began to form. I then explored the design concept in numerous way to achieve my best potential option as well as played around with the unique characteristic of the site. 5. Poster creating Having all the neccessity and the design concept, I moved the final stage of Stage 1: Conceptual Design, creating a poster to visualze my conceptual idea. After a few modification based on feedback given by tutor, it was believed to be finalized and ready to be assessed.

Pham Tuan Kiet Nguyen - a1809859 23

INDIVIDUAL DESIGN - DESIGN CONCEPT BRIEF:

The idea of the design is to create a place where people on all level of society can come and live under the same roof regardless their ranks, or social status. To achieve this goal, equality is the first factor that must be examined carefully through the shapes and design of the living area. As the co-living complex is divided into 2 main parts, the living and common area, the living areas are to be located outside the Common House where it lies in the direction of the sea view and connected by a bridge. Not only the equality factor, the similarity in the design allows the project more constructible as steepness of site. The shape of the living and common area is wider at the side of the sea but becomes narrower at the other side which forms its shape into a trapezium shape in birds or plan view. However, with section, elevation or human view, the buildings carry the shape of a hexagon. The particular reason for this circumstance is that hexagon holds the meaning of coherence, a highly important element for all co-living community. In addition, the hexagon shape, from personal perspective, is more interesting than plain square wall. Apart from carpark, all other buildings, both living and common area, are meant to be kept off the ground in order to maintain the homogeneity in each building as well as the accessibility from the living area to the common house.

DESIGN PROCESS

To be selective in the field of best option for the design concept, 3D site model was priortized to be constructed based on the contour line which allows to assess the site thoroughly on the steepness, site level, wind, sun and sea direction. Hence, I can be creative and explorative the best concepts within the requirement range given by the site details. After that, I drew the boundary line of the site and started experimented on it with different shapes which finally saw a result in final concept. From there, a variety of details was drawn.

INDIVIDUAL DESIGN - FINAL DESIGNS

1. Identity of the Design

3. Solar Panel Integration

As an effort of improving energy efficiency, it was apparent that the design The official identity of my design is to have the living and common activities area separated from each other. As a result of a circumspect consideration, it was would see the use of solar panel, which would be installed on the top of the determined that the living area would be divided into smaller pods and scatters Common House. along the site while the area for common activities would be held on the high ground to capture the seaview of site and be advantageous on the unique characteristic

2. Interaction with site In term of interacting with the site, to make the design more feasible and realisitic, it was a must to earthmoving and relevelling some part of the site, specifically on where the buildings sit. With the living pods, most of the soil underneath would be relevelling to 41m above sea level while the last 3 at the end of the site would sit on 43, 45 ,46 respectively. Meanwhile, the Common House’s area would be earthmoved to 52m above sea level and the carpark is kept at the same level of the Westcliff Ct

4. Car park As agreed in group design brief, the car park capacity will be around 30 cars, however, in my perspective, the number of required slot may be a bit lesser than that. Hence, I proposed the design of the carpark of 23 slots instead of 30 as group agreement

Pham Tuan Kiet Nguyen - a1809859 25

This space is meant to be used for socialization (single), romantic, relaxing time (couple) or family gathering. + The footpath: Serving as a connecting bridge along the site, it might be wasteful to have this part abandoned, thus, it is modified to become a functional outdoor space where it could be a place for people to jog, walk or light exercise. STAGE 1 AND STAGE 2 STAGE 1 In stage 1 my design focus on a community with separate houses and a community centre as a heart of the community. my design in stage 1 follow the concept of trees house by dividing the the living area into smaller houses what i want to achive is to let every community member having more private spaces. each houses will have 4 rooms and divided equally 2 singles and 2 couples in 1 houses and 4 big family will live in 1 house.

STAGE 2 In stage 2 my design focus mainly on making a building where everyone is united under 1 big building to show the spirit of coliving and the entertainment area will be separate from the living area so that people could have some quiet sleep at night while the others could keep take part in activities. In this stage 2 i learn from my mistake in stage one and make an improvement such as thinking carefully about the site and the area we can use.
