YOUTH CLASSES
• Summer Camps: June 20 – August 5 • Six 1-week sessions available
DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Dear Friends, So far in 2016, we have welcomed more than 2,000 students to Crucible programs. We’ve run more than 300 classes, involved hundreds of school kids with field trips and workshops, hosted dozens of teambuilding activities, dazzled audiences with Hot Couture and opened our doors for Spring Open House. All these things celebrate art and creative expression. But, we’re just getting started. Summer is fun time at The Crucible! We’re looking forward to working with lots of young makers ages 8-17 at our youth summer camps, where for six weeks we turn the studio into a playground of creativity, sparks, and imagination. Kids aren’t the only ones who get to go to summer camp, though — in August we’re excited to offer weeklong workshops and immersion workshops in various disciplines for adults age 16 and up. These intensive experiences give students enough time and guidance to advance from novice to accomplished artisan in just five days. But if your schedule won’t allow for a full week, start small — our Friday Flame classes can satisfy your curiosity and be a great introduction to a wide variety of Crucible departments. Barack Obama has declared June 17-23 as a National Week of Making. What better way to acknowledge this than to join us and see what you can make? President Obama said, “Makers and builders and doers — of all ages and backgrounds — have pushed our country forward, developing creative solutions to important challenges and proving that ordinary Americans are capable of achieving the extraordinary when they have access to the resources they need. During National Week of Making, we celebrate the tinkerers and dreamers whose talent and drive have brought new ideas to life, and we recommit to cultivating the next generation of problem solvers.” Speaking on behalf of the entire Crucible staff, we couldn’t agree more. And as Caleb H., a 12-year-old blacksmithing student said recently: “This place rocks!” Thank you, Caleb. We think so too, and hope to see you at The Crucible again soon. Sincerely,
David C. Miller Executive Director P.S. Want to see The Crucible for yourself? Come by for a free guided tour. We’ll show you around our 20 studios and 56,000 square feet of creative space. Tours are offered every two weeks, on the first Tuesday of the month at 6 pm and on the third Saturday at 3 pm.

ABOUT US
Founded in 1999, The Crucible is a nonprofit arts education organization that fosters a collaboration of arts, industry and community. We aim to inspire creative exploration and expression through hands-on arts education and experiences. A hub of innovation built around the industrial arts, The Crucible serves as a catalyst for personal growth and community transformation. At The Crucible, forges roar, sparks fly, glass bends, neon glows and creativity explodes! Over 85 celebrated faculty and industrial arts experts teach nearly 175 courses and workshops to around 5,000 students a year at our impressive 56,000 square foot West Oakland facility, making The Crucible the largest institution of its kind on the West Coast. Our programs include adult classes as well as our award winning youth programs, in which kids 8-17 gain memorable learning experiences and make new friends. Using metal, wood, stone, glass, clay, leather and many other materials, Crucible courses have something for everyone: from novices to experienced artists and tradespeople. We offer a noncompetitive, open atmosphere for people with diverse interests and backgrounds. Our instructors have extensive experience and a passion for what they teach, and make learning industrial arts fun and unintimidating. And our students agree: 75% of those who take a Crucible class return for another, and another. The Crucible features a low faculty-to-student ratio (often 1:6 or better), which fosters a handson teaching approach. Our pricing structure includes both tuition and studio fees, as well as all the materials, tool access and safety training that students need. There are no hidden costs, however some classes may require additional materials as noted.

Tasters are a great way to explore the myriad art disciplines we offer. Not sure which of our incredible classes to take, want to introduce someone new to a craft, have an itch to just try something new without too much commitment? Take a class with a friend or make new friends while making. Try Blacksmithing, Enameling, Sand Casting, Glass Fusing, Jewelry, or Leather. What will you discover next?
Friday Flame Classes
End the workweek with flames, friends, and a toast. Join us for Friday Flame, a unique night out creating industrial art and enjoying good company. Enjoy a 2-hour workshop creating a work of art to take home. Then sip wine or beer with the group and marvel at your new masterpiece (see page 6).
Weekend Intensives
Weekend intensives are a full weekend, Saturday and Sunday to immerse yourself in a new skill.
Master Classes
Master classes are more advanced classes taught by experts in the field.

TEAM BUILDING WORKSHOPS
Many leading Bay Area businesses participate in our Team Building Workshops, encouraging their employees to learn and collaborate in new ways. These take place in a single day and range from 2 to 8 hours in length (see page 4).
ACCESS
The Crucible provides two special options for continuing access to our studio and tools.
Studio Rentals
The Crucible offers 24-hour access to private or shared spaces with industrial pallet racks, 120-volts in a secure building, and access to The Crucible’s studios and tools during studio hours, with appropriate studio area checkouts.
CREATE Program
Our CREATE program (CRucible Expanded Access to Tools & Equipment) gives members a chance to work in the studio area of their choice during regular studio hours, with access to professional-level equipment that would otherwise be unavailable to most home-based makers (see page 5).
We love having people visit our place. We roll the caboose out in front and light the arch to welcome visitors to our open houses and other events, where studios are open, sparks are flying, and there are plenty of hands-on opportunities to learn what The Crucible is all about. Admission is free, and our family-friendly open houses are fun for everyone.
EVENTS
While industrial arts and crafts education is at the core of our mission, we like to weave in a healthy dose of fun and entertainment while we’re at it! MIG Welding I
Glass Blowing into Metal
ENTRY-LEVEL
ENTRY-LEVEL
MIG (metal inert gas) is the most common type of modern welding. It is a process by which a welding machine focuses electricity along a moving metal wire that is fed through a hose to a handheld torch. Student welders manipulate this torch as the electricity melts the wire and creates a weld. You will learn about the fundamentals of MIG welding, such as metallurgy, preparation, joints, technique, and safety. We will also cover plasma torch cutting. The class begins with a basic, technical welding exercise and transitions into a small creative project.
Using foundational techniques in Sculpture & Metal Fabrication, students will design and MIG weld a framework for blowing a unique glass and metal sculpture. Potential projects include vases, abstract sculptures, lighting fixtures and more. The possibilities are virtually limitless with this dynamic material interaction. Once the metal portion is completed, students will assist a professional glassblower in completing their work. This last section will cover basic processes and techniques within the "hotshop," priming students to explore this medium as well.

YOUTH SUMMER CAMPS
The Crucible is the only place where kids can explore blacksmithing, welding, woodworking, glass blowing, ceramics and many more options, all under one roof. There are lots of opportunities to apply things they learn in school, like creative problemsolving. But it’s not like homework, it’s a lot of hands-on fun…and just plain cool! And parents agree, with comments like "My son loved this camp more than any other he's ever been in!"
Hands-on Creativity
Something for Everyone
Putting the “A” in STEAM
All youth MUST HAVE a completed parental consent form and a completed medical authorization form on file before the first day of class. These forms MUST BE SUBMITTED for each and every quarter at The Crucible. Youth cannot participate without these forms on file. NO EXCEPTIONS. Youth attending all day classes should bring a sack lunch. Morning and afternoon snacks are provided. No weapon making in youth classes.
At The Crucible, kids learn by doing. Classes can involve exploring geometry and welding a customized bike frame, blowing glass vessels after learning about heat application, or soldering components to build a battery powered “beetle-bot.” Students can handcraft beautiful glass and metal jewelry in the morning and then explore torch cutting and welding in the afternoon.
Blending creativity and art into STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) helps kids really enjoy designing and building projects from their own imagination. The Crucible’s non-competitive environment lets students choose their own direction, not just copy what the teachers demonstrate. Kids make something in every class that they take home at the end of the course. 24

Dive deep in this beginning and continuing level youth workshop. Students take an immersive step into weeklong study, becoming young makers along the way. We will construct mini-sumobots, small robots that can seek out their opponents and push them out of the competition ring. Students learn to build circuits by identifying components, assembling a circuit board, and soldering parts together. We will build the chassis of our sumobots with simple materials, adding motors and sensors to help the bots move and navigate. The week will culminate with a showdown where students can pit their bots against each other! SUMMER CAMP Crucible Faculty

Youth MIG Welding (ages 12-17) MIG (metal inert gas) is the most common type of modern welding.
