Dear Sir or Madam, th I am a 4 year Masters of Architecture student at the University of Kansas. I am writing in hopes of securing an architecture internship position for Summer 2012. I have researched firms around the country and I am confident that I would excel as a member of the HDR team. My skill set and variety of experiences in the design and building industries have prepared me to become a productive member of your design process. I have a passion for collaboration and I am eager to participate in compelling conversation about design solutions with experienced professionals who have shown excellence in their field. Further, HDR’s intern mentoring program would provide an opportunity to learn how the firm operates and to quickly become a productive member of the design team. Working on large-‐scale projects including a variety of civic and healthcare related buildings provides an opportunity for the architects at HDR to have an impact on the lives of an incredible number of people. Many firms that specialize in these types of projects tend to lose focus of the detailing elements of buildings. Your firm, however, maintains the highest quality of design from the macro to the micro scale. This is what sets HDR apart. My passion in architecture lies in materials based design and detailing. I believe that each material chosen brings a life of its own to a completed project. It is important to understand the deeper implications of the texture, color, mass and form of each material and how they will work together to inform the subconscious experience of a space. Your excellence in this area is what attracts me to your firm, and I believe I possess the skills and experience required to help carry on this tradition. HDR prides itself on achieving innovative solutions to design problems through collaboration with clients, community and colleagues. I believe your firm provides the perfect environment for me to develop as an architect. With my passion for materiality, collaboration, and sustainability, as well as my skills in digital and physical modeling and drawing, I believe I would excel as a 2012 summer intern at HDR. Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Michael P. Fahey 1137 Indiana St. Apt. 3 Lawrence, KS 66044 402.881.1339 mpfahey@ku.edu
