SALFORD HOSPITAL - THE CHRISTIE UNIT - CASE STUDY
Low Carbon Energy Solutions for Building Services
LoadTracker combined heat and power (CHP)
The Project
The Challenge
The Christie at Salford Royal is part of a unique network of Christie radiotherapy centres and has been created so that local cancer patients from Salford, Bolton and Wigan can access first class radiotherapy treatment closer to home.
The extremely high energy demands of this building meant that, to comply with mandatory building regulations, a highly energy efficient means of producing heat and power was required to supply site demand.
Summary of Site Demand
The Solution
Annual electricity demand......................430,578 kWh
Supplied and installed one 15kWe/ 30kWth LoadTracker CHP units able to supplying 92% of site heating and hot water demand and 20% of electrical demand.
Electricity price for 88% of site electricity consumption.......................11.5667 p/kWh Electricity price for 12% of site electricity consumption.......................10.3362 p/kWh Heat demand.........................................186,071 kWh Gas consumption...................................232,589 kWh Gas price for 88% of site gas consumption..................................3.1208 p/kWh Gas price for 12% of site gas consumption.............................
2.7888 p/kWh

Features • Modular Unit Design for flexibility of install. • LoadTracker automatically modulates electrical output, which minimizes unnecessary grid electricity consumption. • Noise levels of 49db comparable to low level office noise. • Long service intervals (8,000 hours or 2 years).
Benefits • Carbon Footprint Savings • Cost Savings
Carbon Footprint Savings 30 tonnes of CO2 emissions could be reduced by installing a CHP system relative to a conventional mains supply/gas boiler system.
CO2 (conv)
289,690 kg CO2 pa
CO2(CHP)
259,335 kg CO2 pa
Net reduction
30,355 kg CO2 pa
Cost Savings The use of LoadTracker CHP would result in annual savings of £6,941 relative to a conventional mains supply/boiler system.
