Why DEXMA? The DEXCell Energy Manager is a simple, powerful and affordable

solution

that

helps us reduce our customers’ energy consumption. Rubén Sánchez, Energy Cost Control

The Ávila, Spain Burger King saved 17% on its electrical consumption immediately by simply integrating new energy management protocols.

Customer The Ávila Burger King located in Santa Teresa square, is a city landmark. Its excellent location and wide views of the city make it a favorite meeting place for both locals and tourists. Burger King has 5,000 restaurants in 73 countries, and exceeded a €2 billion turnover in 2012.

Challenge For a franchise with reduced-price products and high employee turnover, management tools are fundamental. While the Ávila franchise collected detailed information about sales, its monthly electrical bills were not being monitored or managed efficiently. The objective of the Ávila Burger King energy savings project was to maximize energy savings with as little investment as possible.

Solution To minimize investment, the energy manager took advantage of the electric company’s existing infrastructure by simply investing in a GPRS modem to be able to access and monitor the electrical consumption data in real time via the Lite version of the DEXCell Energy Manager. A second phase of the project will evaluate the implementation of measurement devices in secondary circuits.

Results During initial months of the project, contracted load and reactive power were optimized. Additional areas of potential improvement were also identified, including better planning of on and off times for both facilities and machinery. Educational sessions with employees helped implement new on and off times, which reduced consumption without incurring any investment. These improvements together reduced the Ávila Burger King’s electrical costs by 17%, exceeding the franchise owner’s expectations.

Savings Measurements & Results Improvements to contracts The franchise was able to significantly reduce contracted load and reactive energy penalties by applying detailed knowledge about consumption down to the quarter-hour and monitoring the capacitor bank operation.

Improvements in temperature setpoints Detailed consumption knowledge helped to redefine the setpoint temperatures of the climate control system so that the amount of energy consumed would not exceed the amount of energy required when maintaining comfortable temperatures.

On and off power management improvements Employee feedback helped establish new on and off protocols for machinery and facilities. Non-critical consumption during opening and closing times was reduced, which in turn lowered the maximum required load and prevented penalties.

Energy awareness improvements The availability of detailed consumption data has helped establish models that adjust consumption for other variables, such as HVAC or sales. The deviations that occur are communicated among managers and staff in order to identify anomalies and implement corrective measures.
