The Sant Gervasi School achieved 18% savings by involving the entire school community in efficient energy management of its facilities.

Customer The Sant Gervasi School is a cooperative educational institution located in Mollet de Vallès, Spain. Since 1970, the school has demonstrated its commitment to innovation, values and excellence and is a model example of cooperative education in the Catalonia region. It consists of more than 1500 people and 11,900 m², which include lecture halls, sports facilities and swimming pools, all constructed between 1980 and 2012.

Challenge The mission and challenge of the project was to get the entire school community working toward a common goal: energy efficiency. The school’s directors were well aware of the need to address energy costs, but were not ready to invest in new, more efficient facilities right away. They wanted to start by carrying out a campaign to reduce consumption through better management of available resources, energy training and raising awareness among students, teachers, maintenance staff and administrative teams.

Solution To give the project to life, it was given a name, Project Unplug (DESENDOLLA, in catalan) , which served to rally support and increase awareness and involvement at every level. With the help of energy management consultant Tarpuna, the school’s central supply and main consumption were carefully monitored and measured with the DEXCell Energy Manager Professional version.

Results In Project Unplug’s first year, a range of improvements were implemented, and results were measured by the DEXCell Energy Manager.

Maintenance team workloads were reorganized, hours of active consumption were optimized and energy consumption during hours of inactivity was reduced. At the same time, teachers and students engaged in educational sessions on topics like making better use of sunlight in classrooms and reducing the use of electricity in their environment. These energy awareness efforts, coupled with the optimization of contracted power resulted in a community-wide reduction in energy consumption of 18.6%, or €12,000/ year.
