Why DEXMA? DEXMA’s solution is perfect for our company. It’s really easy to deploy and use. It saves time and energy and eliminates problems. Davide Catalano,

Account Manager, Enginfo consulting s.r.l

CataniaPiù supermarkets reduced energy consumption by 18% in one year by implementing real time monitoring and energy efficiency measures.

Customer Established in 1975, CataniaPiù Supermarkets are part of SISA Group, a consolidated business that operates inside the Italian distribution system. SISA counts on more than 450 network members and has over 1950 points of sale. In 2012 the group’s turnover amounted to €3.230 M and its employee count topped 9.500.

Challenge The energy managers at Enginfo were charged with demonstrating to the CataniaPiù board of directors that investments in energy efficiency would pay for themselves and also improve the competitiveness of the supermarkets. Enginfo focused on high consumption subsystems, such as refrigerators, HVAC and lighting. It chose an affordable system with scalable hardware and a communications set able to deploy to multiple supermarkets quickly, thus reducing installation time and saving money from the very start.

Catania Piú Case Study

Solution Five electricity meters were installed in the supermarket: one in the central supply connection, two in the lighting subsystem, one in the HVAC and another in other supplies. Enginfo used the DEXCell Energy Manager to analyze and manage the massive energy y data readings to find energy inefficiencies.

Results Engnifo’s technical skills combined with DEXCell Energy Manager’s capabilities reduced energy consumption in SISA supermarkets. Within the first four weeks, continuous monitoring provided valuable data showing a dramatically different energy pattern from one day to the next. This variability was traced to manual management of the HVAC system. By implementing a new protocol among supermarket employees, Enginfo was able to generate a savings of €9300. Lighting technology was also replaced with LED, which amounted to another €12500 annual savings. During first year of the project, consumption fell by 18.2%, revealing a potential for energy savings in the retail supermarket sector.

Saving Measures & Results Detecting variability Within the first four weeks of monitoring, an inconsistent pattern across weekly consumption was identified, including several nights of strong variations that interrupted the normal activity pattern.

variability during weeks with stable activity

HVAC causing major variability

HVAC management inefficiencies By monitoring meters installed into subsystems (submetering), Enginfo was able to see that the greatest variability was coming from HVAC system as a result of human mismanagement. HVAC was left on 30% of nights.

Implementing new management protocols. Enginfo worked with supermarket employees to define new energy management protocols. This minimized the variability responsible for energy overconsumption and resulted in cost savings. The following chart shows the hourly pattern four weeks after the new protocols were implemented.

Saving Measures & Results HVAC management improvements. Adjustments to setpoint temperatures and hours of operation were agreed with the facility’s maintenance company, optimizing scheduling according to building activity.

Energy reduction:

45,000 kWh Annual Savings:

€ 9,300 LED deployment. Lighting in supermarkets represents close to 15% of total electricity consumption. Enginfo replaced old inefficient technology for new and efficient LED, a €23.000 investment. With the DEXCell Energy Manager, both CataniaPiù and Enginfo are able to track and verify energy savings in real time, to see if ROI predictions will be achieved. From the start of the project a full 44% reduction in the lighting subsystem was achieved.
