HI My name is Michael Horncastle. I’m a London based designer. After graduating from University for the Creative Arts (Epsom) in 2015, I’ve worked in various design roles in the Fashion, Textiles, and Graphic Design industries. I’m conident using Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, and love learning new skills. I understand that studios don’t hire ‘skills’ or ‘portfolios’, you hire people: I hope this magazine shows a bit of my personality, but for a real idea of who I am and what I am like to work with, please get in touch for an interview!
Owl triangulation artwork I designed this owl after extensive market research into T shirt design. During university we were taught the importance of social media presence, and I have since understood the value of the online community for idea generation and design development. Since graduating, I have posted daily on Instagram and Twitter, and try to really engage with other users, understanding that they are more than just a ‘follower’: they are peers, friends, colleagues, and even clients.
Landscape Vector Artwork These artworks were created in Illustrator, and depict Canadian landscapes including the stunning view of Cascade Mountain overlooking Banf, and the incredible Moraine Lake; with its brilliant emerald water. After visiting Banf during a Canadian holiday, I’ve been obsessed with the almost unbelievably picturesque landscapes, and the colours are all sourced from actual photos. The bright, natural colours draw a stark contrast to a grey commute to London on any overcast day, and aim to give a sense of escapism to those needing some motivation.
Packaging Design (Own Brand) This floral print was a self-directed brief with final applications being on phone cases, greetings cards, bags, mugs and other homeware. After creating the initial floral repeat pattern in Photoshop, I modified the artwork for each product to ensure the best possible design for each item.
Triangulation artwork for CONSC. (Conscience Collective) This cotton lower was part of a freelance project for the Copenhagen based sustainable fashion brand Consc. The brand approached me after seeing my work on Instagram, and we worked together to create artworks for the upcoming debut collection. The projects were extremely rewarding, and it’s a pleasure to know that their work will directly help the worldwide community.
Logo Design This fox logo was designed for a client with a very specific brief including the colour palette and sample imagery. I really enjoy working to a brief but am also very confident creating my own work, especially after researching current and upcoming trends. This is extremely important when designing for textiles and fashion as you are working at least a year ahead; meaning the design has to remain relevant, or be strong enough in its design that it can surpass trends.
Branding Design for ‘Roasted’ Cofee House This is a selection of the branding I produced for ‘Roasted’. All the designs use only two colours, aiming to replicate the simplicity desired in the linework. I used a few motifs synonymous with cofee; created with restrained detail, minimal linework and to ensure the designs are clear and bold. This ensures that they work on any scale, meaning the branding can be franchised with ease.
