ACO Qmax® System

SITEWORK & INSTALLATION 2.0 Sitework – General 2.1 Installation Groups: ACO Qmax® is designed for use within all Installation Groups defined in BS EN 1433:2002. By varying the structure surround detail around the channel and in line with engineering guidelines, installation groups from pedestrian, through car parks, to airfields may be accommodated [from 3.5 tonne to 30 tonne wheel loads].

2.3 Reinforcement: Reinforcement of the concrete surround may be required for the higher load classes. Typically, any reinforcement in a concrete pavement would be continued through the concrete arches of the unique ACO Qmax® intake slot design. The reinforcement included in the ACO load test samples is detailed on Page 7, but the customer may choose to omit or increase reinforcement subject to the loading and ground conditions anticipated. Engineering advice may be necessary.

Group 1 (min. class A 15) Areas which can be used only by pedestrian and pedal cyclists Group 2 (min. class B 125) Footways, pedestrian areas and comparable areas, private car parks or car parking decks Group 3 (min. class C 250) Kerb sides and non-trafficked area of hard shoulders and similar; kerb units are always Group 3 Group 4 (min. class D 400) Carriageways of roads (including pedestrian streets), hard shoulders and parking areas for all types of road vehicles Group 5 (min. class E 600) Areas subjected to high wheel loads, e.g. ports and dock areas Group 6 (min. class F 600) Areas subjected to especially high wheel loads, e.g. aircraft pavements 2.2 Ground Conditions: The customer should ensure that the minimum dimensions of the concreted section are suitable for the existing ground conditions with respect to ground bearing and consolidation. Ground conditions will also determine whether side shuttering or temporary strutting of an excavation is required. Engineering advice may be necessary.

2.4 Test Load Certificates: ACO Qmax® 600 and ACO Qmax® 900 are both certified to Load Class D400, BS EN 1433: 2002. ACO Qmax® 900 has been independently load tested to Load Class F900 of BS EN 1433:2002. The in-situ load test was terminated without failure at a load of 92 tonnes with a recorded central deflection of the cover slab of 1.4mm. 2.5 Pavement Finishes: ACO Qmax® may be installed in concrete [car park, distribution centre, aircraft pavements]; asphalt [car park, highways] and block pavement [car park] finishes. A galvanised steel angle is supplied for Installation Groups 5 and 6 and for concrete pavements of Installation Groups 2, 3 and 4. For car parks a heel safe waterway inlet is provided pre-assembled to the channel sections.

Note: Due consideration, in the selection of Groups 1 to 3, must be given to the possibility of the channel being trafficked by construction vehicles and which therefore may require specifying to a higher Group.

Similarly protect from prolonged sub zero temperatures [-10°C]. Do not allow heavy material to be stacked on or against channels.

Reinforcement of ACO Load Test Samples D.1.0 Fix reinforcement. Note that reinforcement varies with Installation Group as appropriate. D.2.0 Prior to final stage concreting, ensure that the protective tape, supplied with the steel angles, is not damaged. Stage E: Concrete, final pour E.1.0 Place concrete (minimum Strength Class C32/40 air entrained) to final level. Note that the concrete finish and extent of trowelled falls to the inlet slot, are to specification by others. E.2.0 Ensure that concrete is placed and well compacted below the flats of the steel angles. E.3.0 Provide transverse saw cuts at approximate collar positions, at 4.0m centres, to a maximum depth of 100mm, (or install proprietary plastic joint formers). Provide longitudinal expansion joints against adjacent slabs, to specification by others.

The customer should determine the reinforcement required, if any, in the concrete surround. Engineering advice may be required. For reference, the following reinforcement was used by ACO in the test blocks for the load testing of the products to BS EN 1433. Load Class A15, B125 and C250. No reinforcement required. (It might nevertheless be sensible to continue any reinforcement in a concrete pavement over the channel and through the arches.) Load Class D400. T12 straight bars at 200mm centres across the channel (one through each arch) and T12 straight bars along the channel (one each side of the inlet arch and stopped at each channel joint). Load Class F900. A393 mesh in the concrete base under the channel. T16 U-Bar at 200mm centres over the top of the channel (one through each arch). T12 L-bars at 200mm centres down each side of the channel, from the top to a point below the widest part of the channel. T12 longitudinal bars to tie the other bars together. Further details of the reinforcement used by ACO in their test blocks can be provided.
