reflective technology to create thermal efficiency

06/05

Why did regulation change? With the Government’s commitment to the Kyoto Agreement, there have been more stringent requirements to reduce Carbon Dioxide emissions in buildings. This has led to increased requirements in terms of thermal efficiency and airtightness. The new Part L and in Scotland Part J require more stringent elemental u-values With the constant lowering of u-value requirements in the Building Regulations and the pressure on the Government to reduce Carbon Dioxide emissions, the thermal requirements of building components have become very onerous.

The timber frame industry has always been able to meet comfortably the requirements laid down by the Government and has always proved a popular, energy efficient type of building. The recent changes in the u-value requirements have meant that a number of options are now available to the timber frame industry and have proved its flexibility of design. The development of these products has been specifically designed to help architects and specifiers meet the new thermal efficiency requirements.

Reflectashield TF is the only reflective breather membrane that complies with the vapour resistance requirements set out by BS 4016, TRADA and the NHBC. The existing legislation requires a breather membrane to have a vapour resistance not greater than 0.60 MNs/g. Reflectashield TF has a vapour resistance of 0.45 MNs/g. Advantages • • • • • •

Unique patented three layer composition. Low vapour resistance. Waterproof. High strength to weight ratio. Improved thermal resistance. Complies with BS 4016, TRADA & NHBC requirements. • 2.7 metre wide rolls. The A. Proctor Group can provide a whole range of solutions for a variety of u-values, down to as low as 0.18W/m2K for wall applications. The options available range from a reflective breathable membrane (Reflectashield TF) to a reflective vapour control layer (Reflectatherm Foil), and includes multi-layer reflective insulants (Tri-iso Super 9) and laminates (Plustherm).

Reflectashield TF Reflectashield TF is a result of in-depth research into meeting the timber frame requirements of reducing the u-values for walls, whilst minimising the risk of condensation. Reflectashield TF is a non-woven polypropylene film laminate, providing excellent emmissivity along with breathability and providing secondary protection to the building during construction.

reflectashieldTF

Reflectashield TF

The product is installed on the external face of the timber frame foil side face out, similar to that of a traditional breather membrane, with the added thermal benefits associated with a reflective insulant. The A. Proctor Group has, for many years, been a leader in the timber frame breather membrane market and this latest innovation will provide timber frame manufacturers with improved thermal efficiency of the wall with minimum, if any, increase in timber stud size and thus less intrusion into the internal room dimensions. 05 / 4210

Reflectatherm Foil Reflectatherm Foil is a reflective vapour control layer. The membrane should be installed in the traditional manner, on the inside face of the insulant and should have a minimum of a 19mm airspace between the plasterboard and the vapour control layer. This airspace can be utilised as a service void which reduces the number of penetrations to the vapour control layer, thus enhancing the thermal efficiency and reducing the condensation risk.

reflectathermfoil

Reflectatherm Foil

The VCL is reinforced to increase its’ robustness and to reduce the risk of tearing on site. Again, all laps should be sealed and any penetrations sealed around to prevent moisture migration. This will also increase the airtightness of the building and should be taken into consideration during design. Advantages • High vapour resistance • Improved airtightness • Creates service void • Creates an unbroken vapour control layer • Improved thermal resistance • Meets the requirements of the new Part L in England and Wales, Part J in Scotland+

* When utilising rigid insulation boards between studs, accommodation for services should be considered. The above calculations are based on fully filling the stud with insulation, therefore additional space for services should be designed, if appropriate, with either increased stud depth or service cavity
