THE NEED FOR BREATHABLE ROOFS 1) Question “What is Roofshield”? Roofshield is a three layer spunbonded nonwoven polypropylene low resistance (LR) underlay with a unique melt blown core. It is intended for use as an underlay fixed beneath tiles and slates on pitched roofs. It fully complies with the requirements set out in BS 5534, The Code of Practice for Slating and Tiling and BS 5250, The Control of Condensation in Buildings and Dwellings. 2) Question “What function does Roofshield perform”? Roofshield provides a secondary barrier to the ingress of rain, wind and snow. It has a low vapour resistance and is air permeable and eliminates the incidence of interstitial condensation in pitched roofs. 3) Question “Is there anything unique about Roofshield”? Roofshield is both vapour and air permeable and these combined functions are unique to the product. This is achieved by using a special patented melt blown core which is thermally bonded between two layers of non woven fabric. The high vapour permeability and the additional air permeability negate the need of a vapour control layer fixed at ceiling level. This is a basic requirement with other LR underlay’s (vpu’s) which have a higher vapour resistance, lower vapour permeability and are air tight. 4) Question “Are there long term maintenance or installation cost savings associated with Roofshield”? Roofshield compared to other alternatives, provides the most cost effective way of preventing the occurrence of interstitial condensation in a pitched roof. The exclusion of ventilation eliminates the cost of buying the components and labour to install them. In addition there is no need for a vapour control layer sub system or accessories associated with other LR underlay’s (vpu’s). 5) Question “What level of service, support and back up can I expect”? The A Proctor Group can provide technical support to assist with all design aspects of the roof. The company also provide “u” value calculations and condensation predictions for individual projects. Additional services include RIBA approved CPD presentations on “The Control of Condensation in Pitched Roofs”.

THE NEED FOR AN ACOUSTIC SYSTEM What is Profloor Activ Deck? An acoustic floating floor panel comprising of a unique resilient acoustic layer, factory bonded to tongue and grooved flooring grade particleboard panels. What function does Profloor Activ Deck perform? Activ Deck provides a high performance upgrade to existing floors with a shallow board (only 31mm). It allows improvements predominantly in impact sound to flat refurbishments where access can only be gained from the top, however its unique composition can also improve airborne sound compared to other shallow deck products. Is there anything unique about Profloor Activ Deck? The system utilises a unique and patented Vertically Oriented Fibre (VOF) which acts like thousands of springs. This provides excellent separation of the walking surface from the existing floor. Are there long term maintenance or installation cost savings associated with Profloor Activ Deck? High quality P5 grade particle board bonded to Vertically Oriented Fibre which has been creep tested (the long term load test for resilient layers) ensures that as long as Profloor Activ Deck is installed under normal residential loadings and in accordance with the installation guidance, there are no long term maintenance requirements. Profloor Activ Deck is a composite panel comprising two layers factory bonded, the installation is straightforward and installation times are significantly reduced. What level of service, support and back up can I expect? Profloor Activ Deck comes with the same full technical, specification and site support as the other Acoustic systems in the Profloor range. Based on 20 years of on-site testing on Profloor systems, our Techdesk can advise on the suitable buildup of the individual floor, taking account of associated elements such as ceilings and walls.

THE NEED FOR POROUS PAVING What Is ProctorPave? ProctorPave is a unique grid and ring structure that provides incredible load bearing capacity, which is manufactured from recycled HDPE. What function does ProctorPave perform? ProctorPave can be finished with either grass or gravel and provides an aesthetically pleasing porous pavement that can be used for driveways, fire access lanes and car parking areas for community centres etc. Is there anything unique about ProctorPave? ProctorPave is supplied in rolls of 1m x 20m which means that unlike other porous pavements systems installation times are dramatically reduced. The grass version is also completely invisible on installation, which is especially useful for fire access lanes on estates where it would be beneficial for tenants not to know its there, This allows traffic calming measures to be implemented to the estate roads, whilst still allowing fire engines unrestricted access in case of emergencies. Are there long term maintenance or installation cost savings associated with ProctorPave? As mentioned previously the product is supplied in rolls and therefore is extremely quick to lay,. The gravel version stops migration of the gravel and being only 25mm thick means that there is a significant reduction in the amount of gravel on initial installation as well as negating the need for topping up the gravel throughout the lifespan of the installation. The grass version requires mowing and the gravel is virtually maintenance free and should last for over 30 years. What level of service, support and back up can I expect? We provide sub base calculations based on site specific conditions as well as stormwater infiltration and attenuation calculations when used as a SUDS system

CASE STUDIES Spacetherm For over 30 years, The A. Proctor Group Ltd. has been providing a range of insulation to the construction industry in the UK. Now, working in partnership with Aspen Aerogels Inc in the United States, they are able to offer a range of next generation insulation systems.

Before Spacetherm

The Spacetherm range of high performance materials provides the highest level of thermal insulation possible with a class leading thermal conductivity ranging from 0.012 W/mK to 0.014 W/mK. This remarkable performance is achieved through the use of flexible aerogel blankets developed by Aspen Aerogels Inc. The insulation used in the Spacetherm panels is a unique high performance material derived from silica gel. Until now Aerogel has been primarily used in industrial and petrochemical applications where it’s dependable and easily verifiable performance has been thoroughly proven. The A. Proctor Group will be offering these high performance thermal blankets for use in walls, roofs and floors where material thickness is critical. Spacetherm offers cost savings over traditional enveloping schemes where the insulation is applied to the external fabric of the building. As Spacetherm is applied internally there is no need for scaffolding during installation which reduces associated health and safety risks. The use of an internal insulation system also resolves problems associates with the use of external systems in blocks where there is a mix of tenants and owner-occupiers, and is also unaffected by adverse weather conditions. Additionally, the Spacetherm panels can be supplied with a Fermacell facing, giving an exceptionally hard wearing and fire resistant internal surface. Recent testing conducted in partnership with Angus Council has shown a near 100% improvement in the u-value of walls where Spacetherm panels have been installed. The existing cavity walls (with blown fibre cavity fill) had an average u-value of 0.628 W/m²K. After the application of a 30mm Spacetherm HPL panel this average improved to 0.35 W/m²K, making a significant contribution to compliance with the Scottish Housing Quality Standard for a minimal loss of internal space. Internal insulation also isolates the thermal mass of the structure, providing a faster response to heating inputs, particularly useful where heating is used intermittently. This dramatic improvement in performance was achieved at lower cost than an equivalent, external system and without the use of specialist contractors. John Johnston A. Proctor Group Business Manager for Insulation Products stated that “the launch of this new product brings a new dimension to the insulating of buildings and will offer Architects,Specifiers,House Builders and Housing Associations greater flexibility in achieving the governments guidelines on energy saving.”

Stormont Lodge Nursing Home Stormont Lodge underwent extensive building alterations in 1997. The BRE were commissioned to monitor the performance of the roof from September 1997 to May 1998. They concluded that the moisture contents of the roof timbers were at a level that would not give cause for concern and were in line with the moisture contents associated with a ventilated cold pitched roof. The Caledonian University were recently commissioned to undertake a full inspection of the roof. They concluded that seven years after the refurbishment was completed that there is no evidence of condensation occurring or problems associated with it.
