THE NEED FOR A GAS PROTECTION SYSTEM Why the need for gas protection measures? Current legislation stipulates the hazards of landfill gas (and its individual components) must be taken into account when designing and constructing developments. Landfill or naturally occurring gas (or its components) can enter buildings through: • • • •

Gaps around service pipes Construction joints Wall cavities Cracks in walls and ground slabs

In most buildings the gas protective measures are constructed below the ground floor level. The protection consists of a number of individual elements, which combine to form an integrated gas protection system. The most commonly used components in a passive gas protection system are: Primary protection This consists of various components which when put together provide a venting system to introduce sufficient fresh air to the underside of the building slab. This dilutes the concentrations of the gas emitting from the ground to acceptable levels. The A. Proctor Group PROVOID system is supplied as a fully integrated gas dispersal system including all necessary pipework, ducting and a variety of air inlets/outlets to suit your individual requirements Secondary protection The impermeable gas membrane provides a barrier to gas ingress and should be continuous beneath the full plan area of the building. Our range of reinforced gas barriers are complemented with a variety of sealing tapes, tophats, self adhesive flashings and gas resistant DPC’s.

PROTECH SUPER What is Protech Super? Protech Super is a high performance, reinforced, polyethylene gas resistant membrane, with a 12 micron aluminium foil core (complies with table 8.6 of the new Ciria C659 document). Which gases does it protect against? Protech Super protects structures from the ingress of Methane, (CH4), Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Radon (Ra). Why is Protech Super Reinforced? Protech Super is fully reinforced to prevent the membrane from elongating. This is imperative due to the aluminium core having a low coefficient of elongation. The reinforcement scrim also has the added benefit of localising punctures (should they arise from failure to protect the membrane from follow on trades) to the membrane and preventing tears developing. Thus enabling any punctures to be easily repaired without the risk of decreasing the membranes integrity. How is Protech Super Jointed? Protech Super can be either tape jointed using Probond 30mm double sided, cross-linked butyl tape, or alternatively can be welded using a hand-held or automatic hot air gun. Pre-fabricated welded panels complete with air channel, can be supplied to individual plot sizes on request. How do I ensure a complete gas tight seal? We supply a complete range of ancillary products, which when installed as per the manufacturers instructions, will create a complete gas tight seal. See page 8 for specific products and details.

REGULATIONS The building regs doc part C 2 gives guidance for methane and CO2 concentrations in the ground with regards to new developments. Gas Protection measures are considered necessary where the concentrations of methane and/or CO2 exceed 1% and 1.5% by v/v in air respectively. The building regs refer to various design guidance documents. A system comprising several levels of protection is considered the least vulnerable to fail. Specific guidance on the design of passive gas dispersal systems is provided in the following documents. • CIRIA report C659 (assessing risk posed by hazardous ground gases for buildings - 2006) • BRE report 212 (construction of new buildings on contaminated land 1991) • DETR partners in technology (passive venting of soil gases beneath buildings research report guide for design 1997) • Wilson & Card 1999 Methane Gas (Explosive) Methane can form flammable and potentially explosive mixtures in air when ignited. The flammable or explosive range of methane is between 5% and 15% by volume in air. The concentrations limits are commonly known, ”lower explosion limit” (LEL) and, ”upper explosion limit” (UEL). Concentrations above the UEL should not be considered safe as dilution with air will cause the composition to fall within the flammable range. The presence of significant concentrations of CO2 will effect the flammable range of methane when the oxygen content is depleted. Methane, either in isolation or when mixed with air, can lead to asphyxiation. A concentration of greater than 1% methane in a confined space is considered hazardous in waste management paper no 27. Carbon Dioxide(Toxic) CO2 effects the respiratory and central nervous systems at concentrations greater than 0.5% by vol in air. It can cause unconsciousness leading to death at concentrations greater than 10% by vol in air. Waste management paper no 27 considers that CO2 is a hazard to health at concentrations greater than 1.5% by vol in air: at this level evacuation of an effected area is recommended.

PROVOID VENTING SYSTEM What is Provoid 25? Provoid 25 is 25mm thick single sided geocomposite that provides a void beneath floor slabs which when connected to air inlets and outlets allows sufficient air changes to dilute gases to safe concentrations (as per Partners in Technology 1997). Which gases can I use it with? Provoid 25 dilutes Methane, (CH4), and Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and should be designed to suit the gas regime on site. Why Should I use Provoid 25? Provoid 25 provides a cost effective engineered solution when used as an alternative to single sized clean stone. Provoid 25 can be laid in strips at predetermined centres or in a blanket as required and being only 25mm thick means there is a reduced dig when compared to a 200 or 150mm blanket of stone. Provoid 25 is also extremely strong and flexible with a crush resistance of 250kpa. Provoid 25 is supplied in rolls of 50m so large areas can be covered very quickly. Provoid 25 is flexible and can be laid horizontally and vertically to deal with awkward foundation arrangements. Because of its flexibililty it will cope easily with settlement under the slab without compromising the system.

RADON GAS APPLICATIONS Radon is a natural radioactive gas. Radon is a product of the breakdown of uranium and is present in most rocks and soils almost everywhere. Some types of rock, however, such as granite are particularly rich in uranium and therefore produce higher levels of naturally-occurring radon gas in areas such as the South West and Aberdeenshire. Investigations by The National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB), have revealed that the risk of contracting lung cancer increases in accordance with the level and length of exposure to radon. This has led to a dramatic increase in public awareness of the dangers of living in buildings where radon gas is likely to accumulate, and a demand for effective barrier and dispersal systems for installation in new and existing houses in high risk areas. The NRPB has set an action level for existing homes at an average radon level of 200 Bq/m3 over a full year. Above this level remedial action is recommended. Protective measures Gas enters a building primarily by airflow from the underlying ground. There are two main methods of achieving gas protection in new dwellings, basic and full protection. 1. Basic protection consists of an airtight reinforced barrier (Probuild 880) across the whole footprint of the building. Gas resistant DPC should be used to seal through masonary and cavity walls. 2. Full protection consists of the above and the inclusion of a Radon sump for every 250m2 of floor area. The sumps can be connected to air bricks, ventboxes for passive ventilation, or alternatively connected to a fan as shown opposite.
