The de s ig n w e e k ch ai r During my bachelor degree, I was feeling very unconfortable with design. From a practical point of view, I was never skilled in handcrafting jobs, and even if I liked a lot the research phase and the concept phase, it was super difficult to me to think about “h ow to p ro d uce” a useful and beautiful product. From an ethical point of view, even if I was interested in sustainability and alternatives ways of production, like the renewed rising of artisanal production, I was feeling super unconfortable with the standard way t h e m a rket wo r ks: no matter how much you exploit resources, workers, and the ingenuity of your customers, the important is that you sell and you gain a lot from your product. I was unconfortable with the contrast between the “problem solving” attitude at the beginning of a project, and the “marketer” attitude at the end of a project, overall when this attitude limits a lot the efficiency in solving real problems for real customers. “That’s how it works!” professors says to me.

My thesis project for the Bachelor Degree.

the question was: i f d e s i g n s o l v e p r o ble m s , d o w e r e a l ly n e e d “a new chair for the DesignWeek?” During the master degree, the perspective of thinking about d e s i g n as a menta l p ro c ess that allows you to get to whatever solution you have in mind, it makes me feel more involved in what I was doing. I started to collect case studies, projects, books that explained a different application of Design Thinking Process in various field of work. The ones that more interested me were Social Innovation, the Circular Economy, and the bottom-up communities described by Anna Meroni. When I was selected for the Exchange Program in Brazil, I was full of curiosity and new energies. New challenges were arriving. 4

The brazilian experience has been a mark in my life for several point of view. From the “work point of view, it makes me trow my self in projects in which design could make a real difference for real people, for example in low-income communities. That projects make me feel that what I studied for years could have a tan g i b l e i mp act i n h ow our soci et y wo rks . From my life point of view, Brazil was able to feed my spirit, with a strong positive attitude, and with a fashionable culture made of lots of influences from around the world, that are trying to live and combine together in a beautiful puzzle of contrasts.

The aim of the project was to prototype the whole “ C rowd - d e s i g n ” process purposed by the Innonative platform. Through the supervision of Prof. Aguinaldo dos Santos, from UFPR, the Nucleo de Design e Sustentabilidade was the first team who create a design brief for the Platform, and from the results of the project, was able to indicate some guidelines for further development of the website. The solution obtained by the project has been produced by the company “EcoDesign” and the developers have been rewarded with royalties from the sell of the product.

HOW DOes a CROWD-DESIGN PROCESS WORK? In a crowd-design process, designer are not the ones who use their skills to find a convincing solution. They are “just” facilitators and mentors that organize and push participants in being efficient in each part of the process, but, in the end, choices are made by the people.

I completely felt in love with this world and I threw my self in it working on a documentary, composed by the interviews to 4 people from 4 social innovation project in Curitiba. Then, I presented it in public space of the city to open dialogues with people and see their reaction. This project became my Master Degree Thesis. The doc participated to the Psicodà lia Festival 2015, to the NDesign 2015 in São Paulo, and it’s available online for free. 10

In collaboration with the service designer Greta Bottanelli, we developed a toolkit to help Third Sector companies in creating effective communication strategies. From the experience with “Seeds of Future” I’ve learned that th i rd s e ctor p roj e cts

n eed s to h ave m o re effic ie nt com m u n i cati on strate g i e s , b u t of te n d on ’t h ave e n o u gh e co n o m ical re s ou rce s to i nve st i n i t. This is why lots

of projects use “DO-IT-YOURSELF” strategies to spread the results of their work. Considering this as a “Best Practice”, we collected tools that helps this projects in developing their stories, with their-own internal skills, and in the right channels. In order to test this toolkit, we organized some 2-days-workshops, supporting real projects in defining their story-aims, in understanding which was “their” story and in which way they could easily reach it. 12

aims ON POST-ITS: “HELPING SOCIAL INNOVATION PROJECTS IN...” UNDERSTANDING THE PECULIARITY OF THEIR WORK AND WHY THEY NEED TO TELL THEIR STORY

UNDERSTANDING WHICH ECONOMICAL AND PRACTICAL RESOURCES THEY OWN TO CREATE A PERSONAL AND EFFECTIVE STORY

UNDERSTAND “THEIR WAY” TO TELL “THEIR STORY” ACCORDING TO “THEIR RESOURCES”

THE TOOLKIT A visual scheme to resume and report the results of the exercises of the book, in order to have a p a no ra mi c view of all the details of the story.

A book to g uide the users in the creative process of storytelling, with tools, exercise and detailed infomations.

THE workshop In order to prototype and test the toolkit, we organized three 2 days workshops in Curitiba (Brazil) with the ideators of some local projects and people interested: Siii Colab, Das Nuvens, Bosque da Iohana Hostel, Prof. Anna Voros from UFPR.

The event is composed by a th e or ical p ar t , that focus on creating a common background about storytelling within the participants, and a p racti cal p ar t, in which they are invited to fill the canvas and fast-prototype a short story.
