Visitor CENTER

Our Visitor Center is conveniently located at the Highland Centre just off I-64 at Exit 16. Our staff will offer a warm welcome and answer any questions you have about the Alleghany Highlands. We’ll  help you find accommodations and recommend places to  dine and fun things to do. So, make the Alleghany Highlands Visitor  Center your first stop. It’s Uniquely Alleghany.

The Jackson River Scenic Trail is built on an old railroad bed that runs mostly parallel to the Jackson River. Hiking, biking and horseback riding are allowed.

So many things make the Alleghany Highlands a unique and special place to visit. From friendly people who treat everyone like old friends to adrenaline pumping mountain bike trails, we hope you’ll stay long enough to discover the many things that make us Uniquely Alleghany

Built in 1857, Humpback Bridge is the only bridge of its design still remaining in the United States. The bridge is now part of a five-acre wayside park that is a peaceful spot for a picnic or a photo opportunity.

Falling Spring Falls is a breathtaking 80’ waterfall that is one of the most visited and photographed spots in the Alleghany Highlands. It’s located along Route 220 just north of Covington.

Douthat State Park was one of the original six Virginia State Parks opened in 1936. The park features a lake with swimming and fishing. There are tent and RV sites, an equestrian camping area and cabins for rent. The park is perhaps best known for its 40 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails ranging from easy to challenging.

The Historic Masonic Theatre is an architectural treasure and stands as a testament to the vision of earlier citizens of the area who sought to foster entertainment opportunities and community fellowship.

There is something special about a vacation in the mountains, especially the rugged, unspoiled mountains of the Alleghany Highlands. It’s relaxing and invigorating at the same time. You’ll want to linger on the porch with your morning coffee and enjoy the view. On the other hand, you’ll be eager to get out and play among the mountains on a trail, river or peaceful road. If you love everything about the mountains, there is no better place for an unforgettable getaway than the Alleghany Highlands.

The back roads of the Alleghany Highlands are popular with motorcyclists and anyone who enjoys a peaceful drive. Scenic drives are a great way to see the less-traveled corners of the region. Cruise through charming small towns, past rivers and lakes and over mountain tops with endless views.

Let the Adventure Begin

If you love outdoor adventures, the Alleghany Highlands will quickly become your favorite destination. More than 50% of Alleghany County is national forest land. That means lots of space to play. Some of the finest mountain biking in Virginia, including 40 amazing miles of trails at Douthat State Park, is in the Alleghany Highlands. The hiking options range from a leisurely walk to a challenging climb where you’ll be rewarded with mountain views.

THINGS TO DO: Outdoor Recreation

Water recreation is king in the Highlands, with two rivers, two lakes and numerous smaller streams. Enjoy paddling, tubing, boating or swimming at a sandy beach. Want more? The Jackson River is recognized as one of the top trout fishing streams on the east coast. Lake Moomaw, Douthat Lake and other streams and tributaries also offer excellent fishing.

Alleghany Outdoors is an outfitter located at the Intervale Trailhead of the Jackson River Scenic Trail that provides both river and bike trail experiences for locals and visitors. They offer paddle trips on the 11 mile stretch of the Jackson River from Smith Bridge to Intervale. They also run bike trips on the entire length of the Jackson River Scenic Trail.

Clifton Forge Sensory Trail: Located in downtown Clifton Forge parallel to the Smith Creek Trail, the Sensory Trail is designed provide the public with a hiking and bicycle path that stimulates and engages the senses, incorporating all seven senses. This trail experience makes the outdoors accessible for all users, no matter their physical or sensory disabilities.

Douthat State Park*: 14239 Douthat State Park Rd., Millboro; Take Exit 27, I-64, near Clifton Forge. 1-800-933-PARK or 540-862-8100 dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks · Part of the Virginia Park system, Douthat has over two dozen trails, for biking or hiking and range from easy to difficult; there is one equestrian trail and Beaver Dam Equestrian Campground as well.

Eastern National Children’s Forest*: The Eastern National Children’s Forest is a unique site offering an easy hike for children and others who want an outdoor experience without an arduous and challenging hike. In 1972, over 1,000 children converged on the site from surrounding states and planted pine trees on the site. Since the planting, a diverse forest ecology has developed with species of various soft and hardwoods.

Jackson River Scenic Trail*: Exits 14 & 16, I-64, follow signs to stay on Rt. 220 N. Turn left at signs reading “Intervale” and “Dressler Drive.” Developed from an old railroad bed and part of the Rails to Trails Conservancy. The trail follows the Jackson River and provides many views of the water and wildlife. Biking, hiking and horseback riding are permitted. Green Pastures*: Call Douthat State Park for directions and times of operation. 1-800-933-PARK or 540-862-8100 · Rich in history and beauty. Constructed in the 1930’s by the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp F24. Biking, hiking and horseback riding are permitted. The four main trails are considered difficult, but afford the visitor possible sightings of deer and turkey as well as flowers, rock cliffs and ridgetops.

Lake Moomaw*: Take Exits 14 or 16, I-64, follow signs to Rt. 220 N. to VA 687 and follow signs to Lake; OR take Exit 10, I-64, follow signs to Lake. 540-962-2214 (James River Ranger District) · Several miles of trails where hiking and biking are permitted, with some trails affording beautiful views of the lake; no horseback riding.

TransVirginia Bike Route: transvirginia.org · A 550 mile gravel bikepacking route from Washington DC to Damascus, VA, that traverses a variety of remote areas in Virginia’s beautiful mountains, national forests and phenomenal gravel roads.

Jackson River Scenic Trail

The Alleghany Highlands is home to one of Virginia’s newest and most scenic railto-trail projects. The Jackson River Scenic Trail begins just north of downtown Covington and runs parallel to the Jackson River for 14.4 beautiful miles.

The mostly flat terrain makes it a fun experience for the whole family. The multi-use trail is growing in popularity with walkers, runners, bike riders and horseback riders.

The Jackson River is rated #25 in Trout Unlimited’s Guide to the Top 100 U.S. Trout Streams and voted Blue Ridge Outdoor’s Best Public Fly Fishing Spot, or try your luck in one of the many lakes, streams, and rivers. For information on regulations and seasons, visit dwr.virginia.gov/hunting.

ALLEGHANY HIGHLANDS BLUEWAY

The Alleghany Highlands Blueway is not a typical blueway.

The Alleghany Highlands Blueway combines two rivers and two beautiful lakes to offer visitors many different kinds of water recreation. Kayaking and canoeing on the Jackson and Cowpasture Rivers can range from a peaceful float to Class II and III rapids. Douthat Lake and Lake Moomaw offer many miles of shoreline to explore, as well as camping and excellent fishing.

Overlanding is a fast growing type of outdoor recreation that takes enthusiasts to some rugged and remote places. Overlanding is selfreliant adventure travel, usually on unpaved back-country roads. To enthusiasts of this activity, the journey and not the destination, is the primary focus. The Alleghany Highlands is one of the top overlanding locations in Virginia, with hundreds of miles of trails, including a long distance route that passes right through the region.

THINGS TO DO: Historic Sites

Spend some time exploring our rich history, and you’ll understand what we mean when we talk about things that are Uniquely Alleghany. The history of the Alleghany Highlands is incredibly varied. The role of the African-American community has been vital to our county and lives on through museums, historic churches and parks, like Green Pastures. The impact of the railroad industry can be seen at various places around the highlands, including the C&O Railway Heritage Center in downtown Clifton Forge.

701 Engine: Located at the Main Street Park on the West end of Main Street in Covington. · covington.va.us · Restored Chesapeake and Ohio steam locomotive 701, known affectionately as the Merry Widow. The 701 was built in May of 1911 by the American Locomotive Company for the Hocking Valley Railway in Ohio. It was acquired by the Chesapeake and  Ohio in 1930 when the Hocking Valley was merged into the C&O. Alleghany Highlands Genealogical Society: 515 E. Falling Spring Falls*: From Exit 16, I-64, follow signs to stay on Rt. 220 North; falls are approximately 7 miles from the City of Covington and located directly on Rt. 220, on the left (between Covington and Hot Springs) A peaceful, scenic wayside. Thomas Jefferson described it as a “remarkable cascade...falling over a rock about 200 feet to the valley below.” One of the largest falls in Virginia, it cascades from an overhanging ledge, and is easily visible from the roadway.

Historic Masonic Theatre*: 510 Main Street, Clifton Forge historicmasonictheatre.com · A three-story, Beaux Arts brick building with pilastered facade, a cove ceiling lobby and original performance hall with stage and balcony, the historic theatre has been transformed into a performing arts, entertainment, education, and community facility. Once known as The Mason Hall and Opera House, the building was constructed in 1905. Steeped in local history, the Historic Masonic Theatre remained the oldest continuously operating theatre in the Commonwealth of Virginia until closing its doors temporarily in 1987. The Historic Masonic Theatre has been restored to its former glory. Visit their website for a current listing of events.

Humpback Bridge*:

virginia.org/Listings/OutdoorsAndSports/HumpbackBridge · Rt. 60 W of Covington; Exit 10, I-64, then 1 mile east on Rt. 60; or from east, Exit 16, I-64, follow signs to stay on Rt. 60W, approx. 6 miles · The only covered bridge of its type of construction now standing in the U.S. The bridge was built in 1857 and is a 100 foot long single span structure, 4 feet higher in the center than at either end, thus the name “Humpback.” There is a fiveacre wayside park at the site, complete with restroom facilities and picnic tables. The site is also used as a wedding venue and for Easter Sunrise Services (weddings must be coordinated with VDOT) Admission: Free

DOWNTOWNS OF THE ALLEGHANY HIGHLANDS

There are many reasons why a visit to the Alleghany Highlands is a relaxing getaway – outdoor fun, scenic mountain views, and, of course, the charm of small town life. The Alleghany Highlands has not one – but two – great downtowns to enjoy. The Town of Clifton Forge and the City of Covington are classic mountain towns that feature locally-owned shops and restaurants, as well as historic sites. Less than 20 miles apart and connected by the Jackson River, each community has its own unique personality. During your visit to the Alleghany Highlands, we hope you’ll take the time to explore both charming towns.

Industrial Heritage & Technology Discovery Center: 227 North Maple Ave., Covington · 540-962-8007 · discoverycenterva.org · The Discovery Center builds on the materials-oriented industries that have had prominence in the region for the past 200 years. Highlights include a timeline wall, interactive displays, hands-on activities, people and local culture of the time and much more.

Oakland Church and Cemetery: Low Moor-Selma Road, Selma Va. (Old Rt. 60) OR From Exit 21, I-64 W, left off ramp, stay on Selma-Low Moor Rd., cemetery on left (approx. 2 mi.); Exit 21, I-64 E, right off ramp, stay on Selma-Low Moor Rd., cemetery on left (approx. 2 mi.) Caution: Narrow Underpass off Exit 21 OR From Exit 24, I-64 W, turn left off ramp then right onto Selma Low Moor Rd., cemetery will be on right; Exit 24, I-64E, turn right off ramp, then right onto Selma Low Moor Rd., cemetery on right · Built in 1847 of bricks burned in nearby ovens and brought to the site in saddlebags, the church has the original pews of 12” solid chestnut. The balcony was the area where slaves of neighboring landowners worshiped, and doors on either side admitted men and women separately. The church served as a hospital during the Civil War. The cemetery antedates the church and contains the burial spots of 12 Confederate soldiers. Admission: No admission. (Church is not open to the public, but interior is visible from outside)

Wrightsville Heritage Museum: 702 Wrightstown Rd., Covington (Exit 16, I-64) 540-962-6787 · Historical artifacts, some of them dating back to slavery. Paintings, furniture, machinery, newspaper articles, clothing, books and many more artifacts dating back to the mid to late 1800s along with more modern, contemporary works. The Alleghany Highlands has developed a reputation as a vibrant arts community. Artisans and visual artists are inspired by the beautiful surroundings. Their work can be seen in shops and galleries around the county. Performing arts is also thriving here, with musical and theatrical performances at various venues, including the beautifully renovated Historic Masonic Theatre.

The annual series includes regional and local performances, as well as a children’s series. The Performing Arts Series has been recognized as one of the most highly successful entertainment & cultural series in the state.

Appalfolks of America Association*: 1047 Ingalls St., Clifton Forge

Appalfolks has created a rich legacy by forming The Virginia Opry, which debuted in Clifton Forge on October 16, 1992, at The Historic Masonic Theatre that was operating as The Historic Stonewall Theatre at the time. On July 1, 2020, The Virginia Opry was designated as the Commonwealth of Virginia’s official Opry. Appalfolks owned and operated the theatre for 12 years before donating it to the Town of Clifton Forge in 2003. STARS (Special Theatrical Artists Revue and Showcase), a troupe of performers who have intellectual challenges and/or physical disabilities, debuted in 1996 in the theatre and continues to serve the community along with The Virginia Opry.
