LIbrary
Military Fiction Book Club READING FICTION IS FUN, but it’s more than that as well. Readers of fiction have been shown to have higher emotional intelligence and empathy than those who read non-fiction or who don’t read at all.
Reading broadly and reading outside of one’s field of expertise, encourages the range, emotional intelligence, creative thinking, self-awareness, reflection, empathy, and openness to experience that are critical for senior leaders, but which are difficult to assess and develop Dr. J. Whitt, Associate Professor of Strategy, United States Army War College.
Reading fiction sparks creativity and stimulates the brain in the ‘embodied cognition’ areas that enhance learning new skills. Fiction provides readers with a ‘sandbox’ in which to explore new concepts, new ideas, and new worldviews, fostering innovation through openness to experience.
some will be funny, some will be more serious. We’ll have a mix of interaction options if you’d like to get involved discussing what we’ve read, and material for each title will be available via private Facebook group or email for those who prefer not to use social media.
We’d like to invite you to join the RAF Mildenhall Library in a new Book Club – one where the focus will be fiction that has a military-related theme. We’ll range from popular fiction to literary fiction to science fiction and beyond;
If you’d like to receive an email letting you know how to find the Facebook group and get added, upcoming book titles, and other information – or you just have a question – please send us an email at: rafmlibrary@gmail and we’ll

YOUTH BALLET
Why Walk When You Can Dance
Ballet has been taught at RAF Mildenhall for decades, and taught across europe for at least 500 years! Words & Pictures by Rae Lovell
THE DANCE FORM FOCUSES on discipline, posture, and expression. We are lucky enough to have an instructor at RAF Mildenhall who is deeply rooted in the tradition of European Ballet. Our instructor, Ms Marina Bostock from Moscow, trained and danced Russian ballet. Eventually dancing at the Bolshoi Theatre in the 1980s. Her love for ballet came from her mother, who was an opera singer, and would bring home ballet costumes from the famed Bolshoi theatre. Coming from an artistic background, Ms Bostock fell in love with ballet from a young age. Now, she loves to ignite a similar passion for the arts in young people by teaching ballet. Ms Bostock took her strong ballet foundation to command her own ballet company in Germany, where she grew her skills in teaching. For many years she taught pupils of
32
varying ages, and saw many of them grow their skills from childhood into adulthood. Ms Bostock enthused that her favorite part of teaching ballet to children is “watching them grow into talented, sometimes famous ballerinas”. She also loves “to teach them art”, “to teach them French”, as many ballet terms are in other languages, and teaching the “focus, art, sport, movement, and teamwork” that ballet is rooted in. Ms Bostock has been teaching in the tribase area since 1988, beginning at RAF Feltwell, then coming to RAF Mildenhall in 2006, and including classes at RAF Lakenheath for a few years following 2017. She has seen children find a passion for dance, seen them find a beautiful way to express themselves, and been able to introduce a motivation for organization and discipline.
| FEBRUARY 2022
She says that these two factors, in particular, are the most valuable elements to start off with. Organization spreads from herself, through each person involved with her ballet classes and her ballerinas. The same can be said for the discipline ballet requires from each ballerina and each family
Ms Bostock has been teaching in the tribase area since 1988, beginning at RAF Feltwell, then coming to RAF Mildenhall in 2006 member. A beautiful thing happens once ballet becomes part of a young person’s routine. Not only do they pick up on the ability to focus and prioritize movement and community in their day, those that continue the practice bring discipline and coordination to their dance and to their life. The practice highlights the ability to combine fluidity, movement, and art with structure and intention. We also spoke to parents of the young beginners class. They agreed with much of what Ms Bostock enjoys seeing in children as they learn ballet. They noticed their children enjoying routine and exploring coordination in their dance. One parent mentioned she was “surprised how well she took
IMAGES: Ms Bostock and ballet students.
to it, and how quickly she has advanced” under Ms Bostock’s teaching. Another mother noticed that for her daughter, ballet “helps her concentrate”. After attending a class and a ballet recital ourselves, the Marketing Team also noticed the adorable joy that came from the group as they danced. Not only was this a fun activity for the kids, it was fun to watch and of course very cute. It is impressive to see how much fun they have while practicing a sport that is often seen as quite structured. In that structure we also got to see rhythm, expression, and some pure fun from the ballerinas. Classes are currently available for children from age 3 to age 10. Children who currently
go to the CDC can even be escorted by Youth Center staff straight from the CDC to the Youth Center for classes at the end of the day. If you would like to introduce the family to the art of ballet, Ms Bostock recommends starting with watching the Nutcracker, as it is a fairy tale story many people know and is great for all ages. For the more mature crowd, she recommends Swan Lake, as it is classic and beautiful, while aimed at adults. She also recommends Peter and the Wolf, or Ballet Don Quixote. Get your children involved in ballet by contacting the RAFM Youth Center. Call 01638 54 5437 or email 100fssschoolageall@us.af.mil
