The Leadership Connect program continues its second year of leadership development on Nov. 18, 2022, at Banham Zoological Gardens.
Leadership Connect is a leadership development program designed to bring together a variety of respected community leaders from East Anglia with outstanding United States Air Force Leaders from Royal Air Force Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall, and RAF Alconbury to share their experiences and expand their leadership skills. The program this year consists of 21 members from various career fields including USAF commissioned officers, non-
commissioned officers, their civilian equivalency, Royal Air Force, Norfolk Constabulary and His Majesty’s Prison & Probation Service, so that class members can develop and learn from within the group in addition to their interactions from external organizations.
“It’s to get [Air Force leaders] out to non-Department of Defense organizations to tap into totally different leadership styles and techniques,” said Sal Davidson, Chief Community Relations

Adviser and a Course Director for Leadership Connect.
Leadership Connect focuses on building connections between the program attendees and community leaders to enhance community relations through interaction and strengthening professional bonds at a local level.
Leadership Connect is a program that partners with businesses and non-profit organizations to ensure the attendees are shown a
contrasting range of perspectives that will benefit leadership techniques and solutions from a non-Department of Defense perspective.
“Seeing how our hosts deploy those principles in very different situations, I think, really helps us learn how to be creative as leaders,” said Lt. Col. Dan Piper, 100th Operations Group deputy commander. “How to approach different problem sets, how to take different principles of what they are doing in those organizations and use those to feed into our own organization and make them better.”
The program consists of a monthly visit to different locations, from September through April, that each member is expected to attend unless they are on a temporary duty or have a last-minute emergency.
Leadership Connect will welcome the nonmilitary hosts to tour RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall as part of the Leadership Connect graduation ceremony held in May. This invitation is extended to bridge the understanding of the purpose of the USAF mission in the UK.
Programs like Leadership Connect help strengthen the international partnership between the USAF and the United Kingdom host nation while also developing the leadership skills needed to guide the Airmen they lead.
Team Mildenhall participated in a base readiness exercise to test the responsiveness of all base personnel. Readiness exercises ensure Airmen practice and use their training and skills to respond to possible realworld emergency incidents.

The first time you walk into Odyssey in Bury St Edmunds you might be tempted to ask "Why is there a snowboard shop in the middle of Suffolk?" The simple fact is, Suffolk is a great base for any snowboarder or skier, because it's so easy for us to get to the Alps and a whole myriad of resort options are just a short plane ride away.
Although driving is definitely possible, the easiest way to get to the mountains is to fly into Geneva and we are lucky to have a lot of choice in how to get there. Geneva is served locally by Stansted, Luton and Gatwick airports and there are numerous airlines that fly these routes, so you can always find a time and price to suit.
From Geneva there are multiple resort options available with an hour or two transfer. Focussing on the French resorts, one of our favourite options for a short break are the resorts in the Portes du Soleil, one of the largest ski
areas in the world with over 600km of piste to explore. The most popular resort, Morzine, is only an hour or so from Geneva airport, so you can catch an early flight and be riding by lunchtime! Morzine has something to offer all levels of rider as well as good nightlife and cuisine if you want to burn both ends of the candle! On a powder day head over to the Mont Chery area for fresh tracks all day long. Other resorts in the Portes du Soleil worth checking out are Chatel, a slightly quieter resort with excellent back country access when the snow is good, and Avoriaz, the highest resort in the area.
Snowboarding in Les Deux Alpes.
If you're going to the Alps earlier (or later in the season) it often pays to look at some of the higher altitude resorts to guarantee the best snow conditions. Val Thorens, part of the Three Valleys area, along with Meribel and Courcheval, is the highest ski resort in France at 2,300m and goes up to 3,200m, meaning you'll always find decent conditions. Other higher French resorts we'd highly recommend are Tignes, Les Deux Alpes and Les Arcs/La Plagne, all great resorts in huge ski areas that offer great variety, freeride potential and good parks for freestyle riders.
It's hard to do justice to the scope and majesty of the French Alps in a brief article like this, so we would implore you to get out there and experience as much as possible while you're here in the UK!
If you'd like any more advice on any of the resorts we've mentioned, snowboarding in Europe in general, or, of
course, help getting all the best kit for your trip away, come and see us at Odyssey in Bury St Edmunds and we'd be stoked to help!

Energy, Enthusiasm and Excellence! Meet your award winning RAFM Youth Programs team

The Youth Sports staff at RAF Mildenhall Youth Programs in England watched with great admiration the resilience and resolve displayed by its youth sports participants during the pandemic. And it tapped into that energy and enthusiasm for participating while committing to enhancing its programs for all involved through an exciting new idea which earned it a prestigious Excellence in Youth Sports Award.
The Excellence in Youth Sports Award (nays.org/awards/ excellence-awards/) is given for a specific initiative, process, project, campaign, element or component of a program that goes above and beyond. This invitation-only award recognizes the innovative ways organizations that have

earned the Better Sports for Kids Quality Program Provider designation (nays.org/quality/) are making their programs stand out and truly become excellent.
Through its Mad Dawg Youth Sports Initiative it dialed into three key areas that has made a difference in its programming: First, it rebranded its programs, incorporating a Mad Dawg logo to promote togetherness and dedication among staff, volunteers, and participants. Making Memories in the Dawg Pound - National Alliance for Youth Sports nays.org/blog/ making-memories-in-the-dawgpound/ 2/14
"You have to love what you do," says Chad Barkalow, the Youth Sports Director at RAF Mildenhall
and a Certified Youth Sports Administrator (CYSA). "We love being here and the parents and the volunteers and the kids see that." Secondly, the staff presents Top Dawg awards to its top coaches and volunteers based on the individual's dedication, their communication with their teams, how they interact with players, how they promote the program's values, and more.
"We really want our coaches and our volunteers to know how much we appreciate them," Barkalow says. "They're having fun, they're seeing the change and they want to come back." And third, it has upgraded its community outreach efforts and recruits new volunteers to help improve, innovate, and support the program goals. Plus,

the initiative is being shared with other Air Force bases nearby.
This exciting new initiative is helping retain coaches, inspire new volunteers to step forward, and provide fun-filled experiences for the kids competing in and around the Dawg Pound.

THE DANCE FORM FOCUSES on discipline, posture, and expression. We're lucky to have an instructor at RAF Mildenhall who is deeply rooted in the tradition of European Ballet.
Ms Bostock has been teaching in the tribase area since 1988 and her favorite part of teaching ballet to children is “watching them grow into talented, sometimes famous ballerinas”.
She also loves “to teach her students French”, as many ballet terms are in other languages, and teaching the “focus, art, sport, movement, and teamwork” that ballet is rooted in.
Ms Bostock has seen children find a passion for dance, seen them find a beautiful way to express themselves, and
been able to introduce a motivation for organization and discipline. She says that these two factors, in particular, are the most valuable elements to start off with.
Classes are currently available for children from age 3 to age 10. Children who currently go to the CDC can even be escorted by Youth Center staff straight from the CDC to the Youth Center for classes at the end of the day.
If you would like to introduce the family to the art of ballet, Ms Bostock recommends starting with watching the Nutcracker, as it is a fairy tale story many people know and is great for all ages. For the more mature crowd, she recommends Swan Lake, as it is classic and beautiful, while aimed at adults. She also recommends Peter and the Wolf, or Ballet Don Quixote.
