Conquering the Yorkshire Three Peaks

A Journey of Endurance and Team Spirit!

The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge is undoubtedly one of the UK's best walking challenges you can undertake in a single day. The objective is to complete a distance of 24 miles, conquering three iconic peaks: Whernside, Ingleborough, and Pen-y-Ghent, with a total elevation gain of 5,200 feet (just over four Empire State Buildings). However, there's a catch: the challenge must be completed within a time limit of 11 hours and 59 minutes.

With some persuasion, we managed to convince a few brave souls to sign up and give it a go. At 06:00, we left our bunkhouse accommodation and embarked on an epic journey. As anyone who has spent more than a week in the UK knows, the weather can be incredibly unpredictable. As we set off along the Ribblehead Viaduct towards our first peak, Whernside, the clouds were low, and the drizzle was plentiful. However, our enthusiasm was undimmed.

Before we knew it, we were standing on a cloud-covered summit, with me, their trusty guide, describing the impressive views that lay hidden beneath the clouds. As we descended, the weather improved slightly, just long enough for the wind to dry us off.

But Mother Nature wasn't finished with us yet. As we ascended towards Ingleborough, the wind picked up, and the rain returned, reminding us all of the importance of

being prepared. Despite the challenging conditions, we soldiered on towards the dreaded Ingleborough steps and reached the summit. Unfortunately, there was no hope of looking out to Morecambe Bay,at this point the group started to doubt my metalogical expertise, as I’d given them a weather brief and suggested that our 2nd peak would more than likely be clear and the rubbish weather would give way to clear skies, but because even though with the wind and rain we had made a strong start to the challenge and were ahead of schedule.

As we headed down from Ingleborough the sky got clearer, and the sun started to shine with a spring in our step we headed towards the village of Horton on the Ribble a quick rest stop to deal with some tender feet and off we went to tackle our final peak Pen-y-Ghent.

As we reached the summit, we were rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding countryside, and we knew that we were almost home. With just a few miles left to go, the group completed the challenge in a time of 11hrs 2mins.

As a stoic Englishman few things impress me, however this group of individuals came together as a team a mix of airman and spouses. from all walks of life, not once did their commitment to complete this challenge waiver. Positivity shone through like the sun on top of Pen-y-Gent!

Epic Adventures!

The Incredible Journey of Our Annual TRAILS Teen Adventure Camp!

What an amazing eight days it has been!

This year’s camp, a phenomenal collaboration between RAF Mildenhall, RAF Alconbury YP, RAF Croughton Child & Youth Programs and RAF Lakenheath Youth Programs, along with Educamps and local British teens, was nothing short of spectacular.

28 Teens, 4 Campsites, Over 1,000 Miles Traveled! Our adventure took us through breathtaking landscapes and unforgettable experiences:

• Coasteering along the historic Jurassic Coast, exploring a 185-million-year-old marvel.

• Biking through the enchanting New Forest, where we encountered wild horses in their natural habitat.

• Riding the waves and learning to surf on the pristine beaches.

• Visiting the magical St. Michael's Mount, rich in history and beauty.

• Reaching the farthest southwest point of the UK at Land's End, standing on the edge of the world.

This camp wasn’t just about the destinations; it was about the journey and the incredible growth we

witnessed in our teens. Through challenges and new experiences, they demonstrated immense courage, built lasting friendships, and embraced the spirit of adventure.

Our unique international collaboration offered our military teens an invaluable opportunity for cultural immersion and bonding with local British teens. This blend of different backgrounds and perspectives made the camp a truly enriching and inspiring experience.

Thank you to everyone who made this adventure possible – the dedication and leadership of all involved have created memories that will last a lifetime. Here’s to more adventures and continued growth for our amazing teens!
