01 Northern Masterplan

Stage: Stage 2, Town Planning Leading team: Paul Shedden, Milena Fabicka, Maria Moschou Team: OPEN optimised environments, Cumming&Co, Nicholas Hare Architects, ORSA Client: Developer and local council LABV Consultants: Waterman Group, Mayer Brown, JLL Elementa Software used: Revit Architecture AutoCAD SketchUP Adobe Creative Suite

The Northern Masterplan project has been selected in the architectural competition in 2017. A multidisciplinary team of architects, consultants and specialists worked closely together in order to propose the best solutions for the 6ha site - currently unused and contaminated. Located just outside London, at the heart of the wider 30 ha regeneration scheme, Northern Masterplan is a crucial part of the whole project. The development creates an exciting mix of uses for the future residents, such as shops, restaurants, offices, hotel with leisure facilities, school and community centre. Proposals have been located in 3 interconnected zones: high-density residential area, lively commercial hub, and quiet community home zone. The aim of the masterplan is to create an integrated development, promote attractive public spaces and clear pedestrian and cycle linkages to the entire neighborhood. The team has challenged building heights policies and proposed innovative housing solutions to maximize density. The project focuses on health, fitness, and well-being forming an extension to the existing health campus and natural reserve.

Project in numbers: Site area 6.27 ha Parks and public space 2.00 ha Homes 750 Apartments and Houses Retail 1385 sqm Education 420 pupils 2500 sqm Community 550 sqm Hotel 120 rooms Conferencing and SPA Parking 1750 spaces

The project is a part of an ambitious plan which will create thousands of new homes and jobs, with significantly improved services, transport infrastructure and leisure facilities. ÂŁ1.5 billion will be invested over the period of 15 years in this regeneration programme

The aim of the regeneration scheme is to transform 30 hectares of post-industrial land into lively high-quality space with new homes, retail and public amenity. The scheme includes the new road, industrial units, southern residential area and the Northern Masterplan.

Proposed landscape is a great enhancement which brings all the parts of the masterplan together. New public square is a focal point of the whole scheme and it is placed where the main pedestrian link cross. New park, river front and multi use games area are the added value for future residents, where they can actively spend time and relax.

ACCESS ROAD

TIO NA

Steep terrain and major underground services were the two most challenging constraints for the masterplan. Setting out the proposed topography was an essential step to create a masterplan, which is accessible for everyone. New routes for the diverted services opened opportunities for the optimal density of the development.

BLUE ROUTE

TIO NA

Northern Masterplan is the most complex part of the whole project. It has an urban character and it’s located between a hospital campus, a football club, and a residential area. The proposals needed to take into the account a large variety of existing and future users and how will they benefit from the scheme. Strong vehicular, pedestrian and cycle linkages between the proposed development and the entire neighborhood were a crucial part of the place-making process.

The tallest PRS residential towers are up to 12 storey tall and create a gateway to the scheme. They are located along the main access road . Buildings step down in height towards the existing terraced housing forming a soft transition between the old and the new. Massing

Filling Station | professional experience | 2017

Extension of the Filling Station is located in the Inverness town centre in Scotland and it was granted planning permission in 2017. The setting out of the extension has been arranged in order to provide a functional and efficient internal space whilst at the same time respecting the two listed buildings which it sits between - the Filling Station and the Falconer Building. The new proposal is designed in a high-quality manner using appropriate materials which enhance the character of the surrounding listed buildings.

The extension has been set back at the point where it connects to the buildings to emphasize their importance. In addition the proposal is 1 storey and sits well below the historic buildings, where the top of the parapet to the extension aligns with the top of the stone banding on the Falconer building. It allowed the extension to be more subtle and subservient to its context. The proposal incorporates the existing arches into the interior of the building in order to enhance and preserve them.

03 Extremes of sound

Author: Milena Fabicka Tutor: Roman Rutkowski Awards: ‘Diploma of the year award’ nomination, Wroclaw, Poland ‘BDA-SARP award’ nomination, Germany Publications: ARCH magazine, Poland Presentation: Museum of Architecture Wroclaw, Poland

„Extremes of sound” project concerns the sound issues in architecture and urbanism. Its purpose is to draw attention to the important role of sound in the perception of space. The subject of architectural study is a complex of eight pavilions with dimensions of 10 m x 10 m x 8 m, each of which relates to one sound phenomenon. Pavilions are placed on the existing rail tracks and can change their position thanks to a driving mechanism. They can form a variety of urban compositions with specific acoustic properties. Pavilions have the following features: 1 - anechoic chamber, 2 - cafe, 3 - restaurant, 4 - bar, 5 - club, 6 - museum of sound, 7 - stage, 8 - cognitive pavilion.

The project is located in Wroclaw City Harbor – an attractive area in the city center, which is in a poor condition and needs revitalization. The project contains a proposal of urban scale harbor cultivation and architectural study of its part, which includes the southern spit. In its center, there is a wide pedestrian route leading to the pavilions. Equipment necessary to the needs of open public space is located in the central part of the route, on its longitudinal axis. In addition, the waterfront is developed for recreation purposes.

04 Hotel without windows

Author: Milena Fabicka Tutor: Roman Rutkowski Review Panel: Antoni Domicz Agnieszka Chrzanowska Software used: Archicad Photoshop Illustrator

The most important and basic function of a hotel is a possibility of an overnight stay. A hotel-room is a fundamental unit of the building. Even though it is an equivalent of a home for a short stay, still it can follow slightly different rules of design. The main idea of the project is to create various types of rooms with an unusual type of lighting, dimensions and arrangement - something people can not experience on a daily basis. The area where the project is located is not very attractive, thus the interior has to be an attraction itself and provide unique experiences for the guests. There are six types of rooms. The light gets inside through the ceiling, balcony or floor but there are no traditional windows. Rooms are long and narrow or square and regular, one or two storey, with or without balcony and so on. The rooms are arranged on a square outline with entrances facing a big atrium. Every floor is different and depends on the floor below. The final form of the building was an effect of both design thought and a level of randomness. The building was part of a wider concept comprising of no. 16 buildings, each 40x40x25m in size.

‘I love this crazy idea of not having windows but still having daylight in the building. The way rooms are arranged is very complex - I’m not sure if even I would be able to design something like this’ - Antoni Domicz, Architect

2018 | competition project | CLUB STOP

05 Club Stop

Team: Milena Fabicka, Maria Moschou Awards: Finalist Publications: Alternative designs for Clubs. The book Organised by: Non-architectural competitions

Public infrastructure made fun. Ever feel like dancing your Monday blues away? Could you deal with stress and routine by clubbing daily? YES - at a Club Stop near you! Why not incorporate clubbing into the basic aspect of city life - public transport? An alternative bus stop where you can boost endorphins, actively spend the wait, and improve your productivity. You can create energy by dancing and earn credits for commute or music events - just tap your contactless card on the scanner. The dance floor will transform your kinetic energy to electricity, which powers the city.

Not travelling? Don’t worry! You can still use the Club Stop any time, day or night. It operates 24/7 and the time span of your visit can be as short as 15 minutes, or as long as a few hours. Every Club Stop streams DJ sets, live music performances, and festival broadcasts from around the world, bringing the music closer to people. It is fitted with various textures, smells, visuals, and vibrations to be fully accessible for everyone - as the public infrastructure should be. Let’s bust some moves!
