THE GREAT TREE OF WATER EL GRAN ÁRBOL DE AGUA
Wone. The Great Tree of Water, is the name of a myth of the Tikuna people. At the beginning the territory was dark and all covered by Wone´s foliage, the great ceiba . Its roots were huge like the stem, leaves and branches, did not allow the pass through them of the sun´s light. It was then the first tikuna men on earth , the twins brothers Yoi and IPI decided to invite all of the jungle’s animals to overthrow the great Wone , the “ tree of life“ . As the tree fell, its massive trunk sculpted the Amazon River, thence sprang the water while its branches formed the river’s tributaries, its twigs created creeks and streams, and its leaves produced lakes and ponds.
Wone. El Gran Árbol de Agua, es el nombre de un mito del pueblo Tikuna. Cuenta que el territorio estaba oscuro y todo cubierto por el follaje de Wone, la gran ceiba. Sus raíces eran inmensas al igual que el tronco, las hojas y las ramas, que no permitían que pasara la claridad a través de ellas. Fue entonces que los primeros hombres tikuna sobre la tierra, los hermanos gemelos Yoì e Ìpi decidieron invitar a todos los animales de la selva con el fin de derribar a Wone, el “árbol de la vida”. Al caer, el enorme tronco dio forma al río Amazonas, de allí brotó el agua mientras las grandes ramas hicieron los afluentes, las más pequeñas, se convirtieron en quebradas y riachuelos y el follaje, en lagos y lagunas.
The pieces of this project are sculptures and reliefs made on paper, large format drawings and collage, that born in the recurrent artist’s interest in the sacred nature coupled with the oral tradition of the Amazon that from the myth originate the sample. The dendritic ways in reliefs and drawings are a reflection , perhaps a footprint left by the tree in its fall - or by the river in its course - . Rivers or trees, that founds opposite , positive and negative to merge into the same immensity they represent. The impact on the land and the landscape extends across leaving evidence of their passage.
Las piezas de este proyecto son esculturas y relieves hechos en papel, dibujos de gran formato y collage, que nacen del recurrente interés del artista por la naturaleza sagrada sumado a la tradición oral del Amazonas que desde el mito, da cuerpo a la muestra. Las formas dendríticas en los relieves y los dibujos son un reflejo, quizá una huella dejada por el árbol en su caída – o por el río en su curso –. Ríos o árboles, encontrados y opuestos, positivo y negativo que se funden en la inmensidad misma que representan. El impacto en la tierra y en el paisaje se extiende por el territorio dejando indicios de su paso.
