Defeating the Enemy Called Average

Editorially Speaking

You deserve more than just enough; I hear a lot of people when asked how are things with you? They simply reply I am ok. Well may I submit to you that being just ok will not cut it in the times and seasons that we find ourselves. The purpose of creating mankind is that we replenish the earth in every ramification of the word ‘Replenish’. We are supposed to have more that our needs so that we can reach out to the rest of the world and be a blessing to them. Ever wondered why Jesus Christ declared in John 10:10 that His main mission is to give us not just life, because that would be average but to give us ‘Abundant life’ also known as ‘ZOE Life’. It is a life that is far more than just enough, it is a life where dreams are turned to reality and people are born with nothing, but become something because they believed in the promises of a divine God to make a way for them. You Must Dare To dare is to challenge, dispute, confront, face-up, test, defy, and brave-up to the challenges of everyday life. Did I say challenges of everyday life, yes and yes again. Life is a stage filled with thorns and thistles, the only place of peace is above the cloud, and now to get above the cloud you must breakthrough it. Ever been on an airplane? Once the flight takes off, it begins to battle through the cloud because it seeks a place of peace, while battling through the cloud; it is focused on reaching a particular altitude where there is calmness. Did I mention that the cloud is the biggest obstacle because it presents what is known as turbulence, the plane is shaky and everyone is ordered to have their sit belts on until the battle is won. That is a clear description of what life is all about, if you are seeking for a life of peace, joy, affluence and abundance then the only place for you is above average. The air planes dare nature every day, defiling the law of gravity and making it up and above the turbulence because they are determined to reach a destination at a particular time. You Must Learn to Ride through Turbulences It baffles me when I see people give up because they are going through one thing or the other and I say to myself, why I have to give up when there is every reason not to. You were not born a failure and certainly you cannot be a failure except you decide to reconstitute that which God already constituted before the very foundations of the earth. I am not in any way insinuating that life is easy no, not at all but I simply want you to know that your only option is to learn to ride through it, now note the difference, I am not advising you to live with it but to learn to ride through it. The popular gospel singer, Ron Kenoly hit the right cord in his song “If you catch hell don’t hold it, and if you are going through hell do not stop” The word of God has so much wisdom and tools for you to win in troubled times that I will recommend everyone who needs lessons on how to break through the storms of life to contact the bible and grab the information needed for victory no matter your circumstance. Progress Report Miles is doing very well, thanks to our sponsors and readers, you are the reason why we continue to exist, may the good Lord continue to provide for you as you in turn support this vision to reach the global community, one person at a time. Yemi Blaq Inspiring a

New Generation

Yemi Blaq is a Nigerian actor born into a family of 5, 7 if you count his parents, both of whom are still alive and kicking. He was always drawn to the arts and thus never drifted far from where he could be involved in it. He played a major role in the primary school graduation play, and from there went on to become captain of his secondary school drama team when he was in class 1. He went on to study Theatre Arts and from there became a professional actor in the Nigerian movie industry, popularly referred to as Nollywood. His foray into professional acting started in 2005 with some minor roles, and in the same year he landed his first lead role in a NEK Productions movie entitled ‘Lost to Lust’. This marked his meteoric rise to fame. He has gone on to appear in over 200 movies to date, amongst which are ‘Haunted’, ‘Letters To A Stranger’, ‘The Distance Between’, ‘Traumatized’, ‘The Spirit Of The Assassin’ and a host of others.

Ondo State Ambassador for Culture and Tourism and ACTDF ambassador. He has won a handful of awards for his acting, and he currently won the ‘2012 Zuma Awards’ in the best actor category. Yemi is married to his beautiful wife, Remi who is also a powerful writer/producer, and they have a wonderful son together. Asides acting, he is also a singer, poet, songwriter and also a voice over artist. Yemi is currently working on his debut album, which seems to be taking ages, but when I asked him why at

our recent meeting in Lagos Nigeria, he replied ‘because I want to do things the right way and come out with something original and very good for my fans.’ Miles magazine is a Christian based publication that seeks to offer a guide to inspired living. Last year when I had the opportunity to meet this rare gem his dreams and vision appealed so much to that of this publication. Currently Yemi and the Miles are working on the launch of a very powerful Non Governmental Organisation called ‘NuLife Project’.

With this project we are aiming to combine resources to bring hope and life to the children of Nigeria who are not privileged to afford good life in terms of education and skill training. Due to his overly crowded schedule we are working towards launching by the first quarter of 2013. Yemi is a friend of mine on a personal basis. Both our families have remained close and excited about the potentials that our relationship will produce in our youths of whom many remain destitute and hopeless because they lack the basic skills or education required to make it in a brutal winner-take-all society like Nigeria. This artist, in spite of being one of the elite, remains touched by the sufferings of the young ones in Nigeria. He is determined to bring hope to the hopeless even if

it means one child at a time. He is also one of the few who have kept the moral values of the African culture while striving to become a giant in the movie industry, both in Nigeria and in the world. Miles magazine would be updating our readers with further developments on the NuLife Project as we make strides forward. We are very proud to be associated with such an icon in the movie industry, and look forward to greater accomplishments together. When asked to give his last word, Yemi declared “My goal is to inspire a generation and help that generation fulfill their dreams by releasing their potentials.

Beyond The Pulpit

The

‘Inter–Net’ would not have had a chance to exist. These are amazing things that the internet has done and continued to do on a daily basis.

I am not going to bore you with what the internet is or how you can effectively use it to reach the rest of the world which thanks to same is now one global village. The effect of this system is unbelievable, a man in the United Kingdom can make a statement and instantly a village in China would get to hear and know the details instantly. The Good – I must confess that there are so many good sides to this web (that’s how you search on the net – the World Wide Web). It has helped everyone like churches, businesses, organization, governments and the news media. CNN can be stopped from entering Syria but still they get first hand information of all that is going on there. Those are the very good sides of the internet. It has also greatly and immensely helped to showcase talents that ordinarily

14

www.milesmag.com

But, there is an imminent danger that brews from the constant non-limitation and control of what goes on the net. Recently I was in Toronto safely at home in truth working on this particular issue of the Miles when I kept getting phone calls and emails from all over the world, people had gotten an email claiming that I was stranded in Spain and needed urgent financial assistance to get back to Canada. I tried to change my password and the hoodlums cut me off my own email address, they hijacked all my incoming mails. I called my service provider and they told me that my account has been compromised. Wow, imagine what can happen through the net in one split second, your whole life can go just like that. I believe it was in Germany a few years back that a man put up on the INTERNET that he wanted somebody that would kill him, another guy replied and he paid the agreed fee and this man just went over and killed him, just like that. The sex industry has gone viral because the internet gave them a lucrative and very inexpensive route to reach unsuspecting victims who unfortunately includes both the very old, the very young as well as the young and old. There has been so much

murders, rape and sexual atrocities that the Net has given room to operate. Terror received its far share of boast from the activities on internet; you no longer need special raining to know how to make bomb and other weapons of destruction, sophisticated lessons are offered on robbery and other high tech crimes all through the internet. I can go on and on but I think you get the idea, what about the social media’s which has turned to a haunting ground for all illicit businesses and transactions. The Truth is that we cannot do without the internet because it is our only true way of reaching the entire world in a record time (One Click) but it also presents a very dangerous gate-way to destruction. I am a believer in progress, success, development and advancement but I also know very well that it is through these means that the world would eventually hit the destructive button. One has to be very cautious of how you get into the web of the internet, please never throw caution to the wind, reserve your privacy and always remember who you are every time you want to hit a click on the Net. Many have become addicted to various cyber demons today because they made a wrong decision to click a button that they should never had clicked. The INTER-NET is a web system that can hook you in for good or for bad, the choice is yours, one thing can lead to another but always remember it all begins with the first click.

Planet Cookbooks: Cooking With a Cause

Rachel Pambrun Author, Planet Cookbooks Half of the World’s inhabitants are desperately poor today, without the ability to fulfill their most basic needs. The largest segment of the World’s poor is the 800 million who live in rural environments. These are the subsistence farmers and herders, the fishers and migrant workers, the artisans and indigenous peoples whose daily struggles seldom capture World attention. In 2010, 7.6 million children died worldwide before their 5th birthday, of hunger and easily preventable illnesses. We often see natural disasters because they regularly make the news, and yet there are 30,000 children dying daily of

starvation and easily preventable diseases. That is the equivalent to one Asian tsunami every single week, or about 100 passenger planes crashing daily, yet it hardly ever makes the news. Empowering rural people is an essential first step to eradicating poverty. These communities need access to safe water, agricultural supplies and training, education, basic medical attention and small business opportunities. Planet Cookbooks is a Social Entrepreneurship venture from which 100% of the proceeds are donated to International Community Development Plans in some of the most impoverished areas of the World. The mission of Planet Cookbooks is to create helpful, introductory cookbooks, priced under $20, with all of the proceeds going out to help the inhabitants in one hundred of the World’s poorest countries. Among the first countries authored are Nigeria, Ethiopia and Kenya. “Nigerian Cookbook: A Beginner's Guide”, “Ethiopian Cookbook: A Beginner's Guide” and “Kenyan Cookbook: A Beginner's Guide” have been written in support of millions of Africans in need. All proceeds from the sale of these books will help bring about change for suffering African communities. The exquisite flavours of these countries are utterly delectable. From the spices to the presentation method, a meal

is an experience! In these books you will learn a little about everything - from landscape and culture to food and traditions. These books contain wonderful recipes that you will use over and over again. Each recipe is easy to follow and beautifully photographed. You are certain to find something to learn and enjoy. To purchase, please visit us online at www.PlanetCookbooks.com, or search our book titles at www.Amazon.com, under my name as “Author”: Rachel Pambrun. We can also be reached by email at info@planetcookbooks.com and our Facebook page is Planet Cookbooks. Thank you for your purchase and for your support to this valuable ministry. Together we can bring hope to many, by demonstrating God's compassion & love and through sharing the message of Jesus Christ around the World.

How we Relate

BEING DIFFERENT TAKES COURAGE We are the “chosen of the Lord”, and we need always to go the extra mile to do what’s right. Society today is full of compromise, and there is a constant pressure on us to just give in and do what everybody else is doing. Just conform; go with the flow, but before long we will just slide down into doing all the negative things those who do not love the Lord are doing. Romans 12:1-2 exhorts us against that kind of behavior. It takes courage to be different. Any dead fish can float downstream, but it takes a strong, vibrant, lively salmon to swim upstream to the source. God is looking for people who can swim upstream against the current. You should learn to march to the beat of a different drummer. Walk different. Talk different. Go different places. Have a different attitude. Live by a higher standard. Your friends may shun you when you behave differently. Good! You don’t need friends like that. If you live the right way, God will bring you better friends. Some of us are just short of a victorious life because of the company, or friends, we

16

www.milesmag.com

keep. Ordinary birds travel in flocks, but eagles soar alone. Many of us are content to be just thermometers and measure (or go along with) the temperature of society. A thermostat, on the other hand, will change the temperature and set the parameters for how things should be. Are you a thermometer or a thermostat? Folks should be able to look at you and know there is something different about you. The things you say or do should not just come from an empty vessel, but should spring out of a deep-seated conviction to change the world around you for the better. If you want to preach a good sermon, then live a godly life. People would rather see a great sermon than hear one, but it takes courage to be different. Daniel and his three Hebrew friends are a perfect example of that in the Bible (Daniel 1:8). Cream always rises to the top. If you continue to do what’s right, to take the high road, eventually you are going to come out ahead. But it takes courage and determina-

tion like Daniel portrayed in Daniel 6:10. You cannot keep running with the crowd; you need to forge ahead, doing that which will make others take notice. Sometimes you may have to be bold; hurt a few feelings; ruffle a few feathers, but do whatever you have to to get out of a compromising situation. No matter how much pressure you feel from the outside, you can never go wrong if you don’t compromise. Unfortunately, two thousand years after Jesus, the call to be Christians has been watered down to be smooth and safe, filled with opportunity and promise but lacking risk, passion, sacrifice and commitment. Jesus called His followers to a path that is far from the easy road. It is a path filled with adventure, uncertainty, and unlimited possibilities – the only path that can fulfill the deepest longings and desires of your heart. And it a path outside the Church building! It takes courage to let go of a sanitized Christianity and go back to the powerful, raw and ancient faith that crossed the Red

Sea on dry land, trod through the wilderness for forty years, conquered the heathen in a foreign land, and chose revolution over compromise, peril over safety, and passion over lukewarm and diluted religion. You may lack spiritual pedigree, but you must have the courage to speak with spiritual power and authority. Jesus says in Matt 11:11 “Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.” Are you now in the kingdom of heaven? Do you consider yourself least in that kingdom? Then take courage, and read the words of Jesus again and encourage yourself in the Lord. On innumerable occasions the Bible exhorts us to “be strong and of good courage.” This is necessary because no matter what a person who is genuinely following Jesus does, we find reason to disdain and try to discredit him. As a disciple of Jesus you should resist being molded into a stereotypical Sunday (or cardboard)

Christian. You must have the courage not to be a church-goer, but to be the Church, and take the Church with you wherever you go. It took courage for Enoch to walk with God for three hundred years, for Abraham to embark upon a life of reckless abandon when God called him to “leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you” (Genesis 12:1). Then there were, Samuel, Elijah, Nehemiah, Gideon, Joshua, Caleb, and Hosea who displayed uncompromising courage in adhering to the things God required of them. Throughout the history of the Christian walk we see a noble army, men and boys, the matron and the maid, climbing the steep ascent into heaven amid peril, toil, and pain, but never wavering in their boldness to proclaim the inviolable love of God. Today, it may seem that the persecution is less intense, but we are daily set upon by the infiltration of our minds and spiritual environment by the technological inventions which make it so easy to disseminate the devilish doctrines of the

world, and the ultra-tolerant social and legal principles that are designed to erase anything Christian from public perception. I am certainly not criticizing the technology, but I would exhort the soldiers of Jesus Christ to recognize that we have to hold on to the weapons of warfare that we were empowered with by Jesus, “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal , but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds; Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:4-5). In case you are wondering what those weapons are, they are the very same that the world uses, except they are sanctified by our prayers and submission to God. Face it: even the angels of God use fiery, flaming swords! It takes unimaginable courage to take up those weapons on behalf of our King, and sometimes it may seem an almost impossible task, but though it may seem impossible to men, “with God all things are possible” (Matt 19:26). May God Help Us.

Perspective of Faith

This is a letter sent to me by a Bishop friend of mine who resides in London England, and I though it worth sharing with you all. It is a personal testimony of the power of God when activated by faith‌

Powerful Miracle Formula Dear Miles Magazine Though Miracles may look impossible they do happen! Today I want you to know that I am a great believer in Miracles. For years God has been revealing to me powerful formulas for miracles and every time I put them into action I always get my answer. You are special to me and the one thing that God made me vow to him that as he teaches me these principles I would share him with his people, and the more I share them the more formulas He will reveal to me. Today I would love to share with you this powerful Miracle Formula (Determination + Hope + Divine intervention = A Miracle) Earlier this week I was determined to get home to Edinburgh Scotland. On Wednesday I had a long day of video shooting for our daily Television Broadcast. By the time I finished my time was running late. I needed to get a 30 minutes journey train from London Victoria Train Station to Gatwick Airport to catch a Plane that was taking off at 1805 hours. I had done a calculation that if I got to the station by 17:00 I will be able to catch the train so I could be at the airport by 17:30 and that would give me 35 Minutes to catch the plane. By the time I got to the Station we were late and I had to catch the 17:15 train which meant I arrived at the airport by 17:45. Then when I got to the airport I realized that I needed to catch another shuttle, which would take 5-10 minutes. By the time I got through check-in and security it would be another 10 Minutes. But because I believe in Miracles I was determined that I must get home. I had hope because I believe in Miracles. I quickly did a silent prayer and I asked for divine intervention. I asked God to send his angels and hold the plane for me. I asked God to send his angels before me and grant me success. As I arrived at the security gate, without even asking, everybody in the queue gave way. As I ran through the shopping mall everybody was giving way for me. My gate was gate 55. I was determined, I had Hope and I expected divine intervention. When I got at the gate it was 18:10 and the plane was just boarding. Again everybody made a way for me without even asking. It was a full flight but I managed to get a good seat. I lifted up my hands and I gave God thanks. Now its your turn. Dont give up. Today make a quality decision to move forward. Have hope that something great is going to happen: Expect divine Intervention. Say your prayers with faith, talk positive and miracles will happen. I want you to read this article at least 3 times and a new power is about to rise up within you. Feel free to share it with a friend or a family member. Your determination can make a difference I have a very powerful Audio teaching about how to release your angels onto assignment. These supernatural beings are ready to intervene on your behalf. Actually they want to work for you full time, lifting your burdens and shortening your struggles. Today remember (Determination + Hope + Divine intervention = A Miracle) God bless you and have a nice day Dr Climate Irungu www.bishopclimate.org

Consider This Life they say is a game, and only those who play to win succeed. I do not know if to believe or not but definitely the truth remains that in life there is nothing like fairness. I see a system where favor is granted those who have no right to receive it, while those you would ordinarily have judged to be with it is left to live in pain and penury. The question then remains, what is life and how does one live or play it to win? The first point of reality is to accept the fact that nothing happens without a reason, either physical or spiritual in most cases. The spiritual influence in the events of life cannot be overlooked in any way. Take for instance, a man that is determined in his inner man (spirit) that he is a success in life often succeeds, and those who accept that life is cruel and would remain cruel to them often than not fail. So why, if I may ask, do things take shape based on our spiritual state of being. I am a man of the

There is nothing that we can physically orchestrate, but we can mentally and spiritually will our way through the storms of life. Now it is that ‘will’ that we must then believe and eventually voice it out for God through the ministering angels sent to minister to the heirs of salvation (you, me, together with all true believers in Christ). You will agree with me that living this form of life is easier said than done, but I want to assure you that it is the only way to true victory in life. The alternative is to go try with your power and find out sooner than later that there is a limit to what your natural power can do. One day will come when you will get tired and all hell will be let loose, not to think about how many heart breaks, frustrations and disap-

see that there is really no way around the fact that all things must work together in the spiritual realm for us to see a tangible victory in the physical. I have followed greatness and followed failures as well. As a pastor you must be comfortable with both sets of life-styles. There are people that you need to help come up in life, and there are people that you need to learn from as well. All groups play a part in our journey of life, howbeit for different purposes in life. I believe that this is not just for the Christian man and woman but for all persons that have a desire to control their own destiny. Do you know that whatever you call your situation is what it becomes for you? But in the real sense, how do you name things that you do not know? You cannot name a name that you do not understand. For me, the key that I pick from the scripture above is the truth that a man's word does not necessarily reflect his mindset. He can say I am not afraid, I am confident of victory, I believe that I will make it in life whereas, in his heart there is fear and doubts all the way. Now he can be able to fool the crowd, but unfortunately the spirit is a different ball-game all together. In the realm of the spirit, you can never fool around. Both the angelic as well as the demonic entities can see through the words and actions of men. It is indeed scary if you cannot reason it out, but very encouraging if you have the spiritual clout to say the right things and mean what you say. The power and ability to fulfill our hearts’ desires is not in our hands. The Lord God is the Author and Finisher of our faith.

I have come to realize by experience that life is a mysterious game of the spirit. It has nothing to do with natural occurrences, but everything to do with spiritual declarations and ambitions. I have been opportune to come across great men who have achieved remarkable things in life. Some had a good and solid background as a stepping stone, but most achieved all things by merely believing that it can be done. I tried very much to hear their story because I know that it is their story that turned to their glory. One thing always stood out: they first and foremost determined that they would never be a failure in life. They believed that this world was made for them. They saw themselves as winners and dominators of the world order, and so they went on to become. A state of mind where obstacles become nothing but overcome-able challenges... Growing up in life, I never liked the slogan "mind over matter", but as a grown man I

they specifically stand for, but a pastor like me will be taken aback if not thrown out of my groove by an open stomach with blood and different organs starring me in the face. Yes, I know that the stomach contains organs, but can I accurately identify these organs as well as be comfortable looking at them raw? It is not about knowing that life would throw challenges your way, but it is about identifying these challenges and being ready to overcome them as nothing but just another stepping stone to your miracles in life. I really do not know what to make of the article, but as a vessel I have written as directed, and I believe that someone out there must have been blessed and inspired by reading this piece today. Find the strength in you to achieve the greatness out in the world. Do not be shy to declare your will, and be expectant knowing that God will perfect that which concerns you. l

Five Things You Must Not Lose in Life As we continue to strive for the next level in our various destinies, it is always very important not to lose focus of the things that really matter in our lives. Like a car would not go very far without constant maintenance, refueling, fluid top-ups, so also will no destiny last unless it is well taken care of, and equipped with certain life essentials to attaining a sustainable level of victory. In this issue our attempt is at getting over the life of average. I have come to the realization that “just average” is not good enough, and that we were never created to just survive. In John 10:10 “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” You see, the devil has come to take away the abundant factor in your destiny, but while it was given to the first man and he lost it in the Garden of Eden, Jesus Christ, in this dispensation, brought restoration to abundance. I will not go into explaining what abundant life means, but I would simply tell you that by all definitions and in all spheres of life, abundance simply means a life of having more resources than your demand. Now, to be able to live this God-given life, you must possess certain qualities that are peculiar to winners and achievers, and that is what we will be discussing…

1. You Must Not Lose Your Hope – Faith is very good and effective, but has one flaw: patience. It cannot wait at all. It is all about receiving it now, and when it does not happen you find faith giving up. Ever noticed some characters in the church? They start off very enthusiastic, but grow stone cold after a while. Well, now you know why. They ran out of patience because their faith never acquired the senior brother called hope. It is hope that keeps you believing even in the midst of hopelessness. When everybody says it is impossible, you see possibilities. I have noticed that what a lot of people call impossibility is simply difficulty, but do not think difficult. Think possible. Romans 5:5 “Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” Hope does not disappoint, and it is tied into the very fabric of your being. That means it can never give up. Some versions of the Bible translate hope as never putting you to shame, so there you go. If you want a good life of no disappointment nor shame, then embrace hope and add faith onto it, then run for your destiny race. You will never grow weary, neither will you ever get tired. 2. Never Lose Your Joy – One thing that I know that we all need whether in the physical or spiritual is strength/power. I

have never researched this to know, but I always believe that strength is a deeper form of power (I stand to be corrected). What I am saying in effect is that life demands some form of force at all stages. You must push through your destiny because there will always be forces opposing your progress, but all you need is a force that is stronger than the opposition and you will come out a winner. I have tried over the years to find the true source of power, and I have come to the realization that power lies in the mind of man. Wow! You may be surprised, like how can a pastor who is supposed to tell us to trust in the Bible be writing mind over matter mentality, but is it not the truth that the Bible says in Romans 12:1-3 that we renew our mind so as to acquire enough knowledge, and with that strength become good, acceptable and perfect in life? Are you still surprised? Then look with me at Nehemiah 8:10 “Then he said to them, "Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength." – Am I bursting your theological bubbles yet? Well that is what studying is all about. The real strength of man is in the size of his mind, but the food of the mind in order to grow big and matured is the word of God, while the fertilizer that nourishes that food is the Holy Spirit of God. Think about this and read the word of God for the next 90 days. Ask the Holy Spirit of God to explain and help you digest the information acquired, then you will notice that you no longer lose faith, nor are you afraid when things are not going well. The big difference between Joy and Happiness is that while Joy is based on what you know in your inner man, happiness is determined by your environment. 3. Never Lose Your Focus – Philippians 3:13-14 “Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” – Apostle Paul is an authority when it comes to the word of God, and so it would be good if we all could learn one or two things from him. In the above scripture he talks about the importance of focusing on the task ahead, rather than the conquest or defeats of yesterday. He mentions that the fact that yesterday is history and today is a present and

tomorrow remains a mystery. Apostle Paul was one of the greatest Disciples of Christ to date, but yet he did not count himself as apprehending his destiny yet, but rather he reached out for the next level. He reached out for his dream. He saw where he was going and was ready to reach there no matter what it would cost him. He saw the prize and his goal was to reach that mark of an upward call of God. His dream was not human-based but divinely-based. Are you focused on that dream that God showed you many years ago? Now it may seem unattainable because factors around you seem to suggest so, but please focus and do not be derailed, and even if you have been derailed in the past then get back on track because today is still early. 4. Never Lose Your Dream – Your dream is what sets you apart from the rest. God does not look at the color of our skin nor does He check who looks more handsome

or beautiful. No. It is a man’s dream that sets him apart from the rest. Look at the family of Jacob in the Bible. They were twelve boys, all potential candidates for greatness, but only one stepped up and declared that his dream would become reality. Yes they hated him for dreaming such a mighty dream, but that did not stop Joseph. The Bible notes that Joseph went on to dream another dream and tell another tale of greatness. ‘Your destiny needs a focus and a destination to drive your determination to succeed. A life without a target is a life without a destiny, and as such, lacks the drive needed to achieve greatness.’ I can tell you that it is easier said than done, but the saying is the first step to achieving. Our spirit man hears, and the most effective words are the ones we speak to ourselves. You may lie to everybody, but when you start lying to yourself then your situation has gone beyond hope. Strive to achieve your dream. Start by

telling it, and sooner than later you will start believing it, and then you will start aiming at it and the divine will supply you with all you need to achieve it. 5. Never Lose Your Seed – We are created to be productive in the sight of God, period. If you will take time to read the Book of the Beginnings (Genesis), all that God wants from man is reproductive multiplication. What that simply means is that for anything God has given mankind He expects a good dividend on them. I could take you through the entire Bible to show you this simple truth but I would rather reference a few incidents like the Parable of the Talents. One was given five, the other two, and the other one, according to their abilities, and when the Lord of the land came back, the one who had five doubled to ten and was commended and promoted, while the one with two likewise doubled and was commended, but the other with one came back with every excuse in the world and no return on the investment. He was demoted, dethroned, fired and sent into eternal destruction. Note that he did not embezzle the talent, but lack of productivity in the eyes of God is worse than sin!!! Be careful and work out your salvation with productivity in mind. You need another reference? What about the tree that was supposed to be producing fruits in its season only for Jesus Christ to be hungry and find no fruit on this tree? The tree was condemned to destruction by Jesus Christ. There is no need to tell you any further, but please note that God loves a cheerful giver. If you are not a giver you can never prosper. 2 Corinthians 9:7-10 “So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. 9 As it is written: "He has dispersed abroad, He has given to the poor; His righteousness endures forever." 10 Now may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness,” Finally, your seed will do the following things for you (a). Increase you beyond measure. (B). Cancel death from your life. (c). Change your level for the better.

We live for His glory and honor and all of our life should be a reflection of this rich attribute of God. Living for God’s glory and honor ignites passion to achieve human impossibility – heroism rooted in the personal knowledge of God. Living for God’s glory and honor is an indicator of the zeal for God’s righteousness. Living for God’s glory and honor is a motivator to confront giants of humiliation, failure and all its negativity. Living for God’s glory and honor is a vivification to step forward in an hour of great need - the courage and unshakeable confidence in God’s ability to deliver from mocking giants of bondage. When the heathen or unbeliever makes sacrilegious remarks of our God, one thing is certain: that life is built on egotism, fad, materialism and self-impudence with no foundation and cannot stand in the presence of our Living God. Listen to what Goliath

said to the people of Israel,

“Why have you come out to line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and you the servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me. “If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and serve us.” And the Philistine said, “I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a

Dr. Augustine Ampratwum-Duah Author, Teacher and Senior Pastor Covenant Bible Church Canada & Ghana man, that we may fight together. When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid”. (1 Samuel 17:8-11) The challenge Goliath, the Philistine champion, threw to the face of the children of Israel typifies a soul being enslaved to doubt, fear and hopelessness. How many times we do encounter situations in life and felt that challenges we are facing are insurmountable. When faced with a situation such as the Israelites did it is a revealing process of what is in the mind, and attendant behavior becomes obvious. The challenges of life are multifaceted, and some send a thrill down our spine and we become powerless and incapacitated. In effect, Goliath was saying that they were ‘servants of Saul’ or ‘servants of man’. How do you compromise on this effrontery or derogatory remarks on your dignity and selfesteem as a man or woman made in the image of God? You are a servant of the Most High God! We serve the Living God, not in servitude to any human being! This insolence and

abrasive talk of Goliath, his defiance of God and His people, ignited David to take the plunge. Now the question is this: the uncircumcised or unbeliever makes a mockery of our Living God as Goliath did. The unbeliever defies or taunts our Living God with causative remarks as Goliath did. Quite often, such remarks cut deep into the core of our hearts. Thus, living for God’s glory and honor requires that such impudent challenges and remarks should not go unnoticed. This motivated David to take the bull by the horns. He realized that Goliath has no covenantal relationship with the Living God he served. David further realized that the God he served is a living God, while the god Goliath served and relished is a dead god, not alive.

“But their idols are silver and gold, made by hands of men. They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but they cannot see; they have ears, but cannot hear, noses, but they cannot smell; they have hands, but cannot feel, feet but they cannot walk; nor can they utter a sound with their throats. Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them”. (Psalm 115:4-8, NIV)

David implied the unregenerate cannot stand to reproach the “armies of the Living God”. To David the “armies of the Living God” are devoted to Him, employed by Him, living for Him and dying for Him, so any affront directed to them invariably reflected upon the Living God Himself. For that matter, he [David] could not bear the impudence and scurrilous remarks of Goliath. David’s focus was for the honor of God’s glory. What can be said about you as a soldier of the Lord Jesus Christ? David recalled “blasphemous curse” against the Living God and God of Israel. The penalty is death. Hence, Goliath was already a dead victim in the hand of the Living God. David could actualize the situation and therefore echoed his unflinching steadfastness to the Lord. A courageous infantryman in armies of the Living God who rose at the spur of the moment to uphold the glory and honor of our God. Unlike the cowardly armies of Saul cowering in fear to the dishonor of God. How do we react or confront the unregenerate, and the impudent Goliath’s in our generation taunting the virtues and morals of our Christian beliefs and all that we stand for? Do we see them as terrifying and seemingly invincible? Well, it is time we see what David saw. Instead of defeat, we can see victory on the horizon. Instead of trepidation and hesitation, we can press forward in the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ as advancement in His service to bring Him glory and honor. To stand up for what is right and against abhorrence in the midst of an unbelieving and decadent world requires a resolute mind and unflinching determination. You would be misunderstood, misjudged and mislabeled by people from whom you expect encouragement. Never be deflected from your faith. Expect to be resisted, not to be supported. However, continue to do what is right and by doing so you would be pleasing God whose opinion matters most.

SHOWCASING SICKLE CELL DISEASE AS A CANADIAN DISEASE! Where we are...  Every year we have thousands of unidentified carriers of the sickle cell gene being born across the country. We lose many Canadians yearly to avoidable complications of Sickle Cell Disease.  Presently, only two Canadian provinces and territories have well-established newborn screening programs for Sickle Cell Disease. Only Ontario and British Columbia are able to identify the many newborns affected by the disease through their successful Newborn Screening programs.  The sickle cell patient population is steadily increasing with new immigrants to Canada.  The deaths of young adults with this disease in Canada are occurring at a time when other countries, with comparable populations but comprehensive care programs, are having fewer or no deaths.  Canadians are being told by Canadian-trained doctors that these doctors do not understand Sickle Cell Disease; that it is tropical, and patients should seek care and treatment from doctors trained in countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, Jamaica and India.  Not all Canadian hospitals have established Sickle Cell Disease clinics to accommodate the growing number of patients.

Where we NEED TO BE  Established sickle cell disease clinics and programs in strategic locations across the country.  Have an effective national program for Sickle Cell Disease in Canada with: • newborn screening programs in all provinces and territories • a national Canadian registry of patients • provision of comprehensive care for these individuals  A unified, national voice for all individuals, advocates, and organizations affected by the disease or involved with the care and management of this population. It would be extremely beneficial to the patient community and save the Ministries of Health both at the national as well as provincial levels substantial funds if comprehensive programming, clinics and resources for sickle cell patients are made available equitably across Canada. This will allow for more patients to attend regular clinics and access necessary resources ensuing that they stay healthier, longer. (SCD) SCD is a serious inherited blood disorder in which the body makes sickle-shaped red blood cells. “Sickle-shaped” means that the red blood cells are shaped like a crescent. Normal red blood cells are disc-shaped and look like doughnuts without holes in the center. They move easily through your blood vessels. Red blood cells contain hemoglobin (HEEmuh-glow-bin), an iron-rich protein that gives blood its red color. Hemoglobin carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. Sickle cells contain abnormal hemoglobin that causes the cells to have a sickle, or crescent, shape. These cells don't move easily through your blood vessels. They're stiff and sticky and tend to form clumps and get stuck in and eventually damage the blood vessels (other cells also may play a role in this clumping process). The clumps of si ckl e cells block blood flow in the blood vessels in the limbs and organs. Blocked blood vessels can cause pain, serious infections, organ damage and eventually death. www. scdac-aafc. org l

TESTIMONIALS Send us your testimonials milesmagazine@rogers.com FINANCIAL BREAKTHROUGH I worship at the Christ Divine Ministries in Lagos Nigeria. We recently held a Five-day crusade with Rev. Don Ifepe. The theme of the program was ‘Prosperity by Inheritance’. I must confess that my eyes were opened to the wonders of God through His word and manifestations. But my reason for this testimony is that on the third day of this five-day meeting, the man of God asked us to demand a particular breakthrough of our choice and then sow a seed as a point of faith contact with God. Now I came out to make a pledge of fifty thousand naira to be redeemed by the end of the program which was in three days. The irony was that I did not physically have that money but I believed by faith that God would help me or I would have to sell something to be able to raise the money. To the glory of God, I did not need to sell anything because before the set day for redemption of my pledge, not only did God provide the money to redeem that pledge but He tripled the provision that even after paying off the pledge I still had double of what I gave to God. Ever since then to date my financial situation has greatly improved to the glory of God. A Brother from Lagos – Nigeria.

years so I know that my pastor only speaks when he is directed by God, and so I took his word very seriously and started to follow through as directed. I believe it was by the sixth week that I became very ill and had to be rushed to the hospital. I must confess it was very scary, but I trusted in God that all is well. The doctors said I had a very serious growth in my stomach of which I should have been dead, but thank God for his mercies I was able to quickly undergo the major operation and come out hale and hearty with no complications. The mystery of this is that it all happened and ended within the seven weeks as revealed by God through Rev. Don Ifepe. How he could know and how the timing exactly corresponded with the words that he had told me at the beginning beats my wildest imagination, and makes me believe and know that it was truly God speaking through His servant as He has done so accurately so many times in the church. Sister H. Toronto, Canada.

I am a member of the Believers Full Gospel Vineyard, Toronto, Canada, I was going through a very tough time when it comes to finance. I approached my father in the Lord, Rev. Don Ifepe, and told him my predicament. He ordered me to embark on a seven weeks prayer period which he personally coordinated every Sunday for the whole time. I am very happy to testify that my life changed for the best after those seven weeks. I was able to attend a career training course at the end of which I got myself gainful employment with full benefits. I have been able to pay off most of my debts which I incurred while jobless and hopeless, and I now live life with hope and positive expectations. Brother C. – Toronto Canada.

One day I woke up to a terrible pain in my legs. No matter which doctor or specialist I went to, this pain seemed never to be relieved or go away. My friend told me that a man of God from Canada was coming to a church nearby and so I decided to give God a try by attending the All Night service. There I met Rev. Don Ifepe and he called me out during ministration. He specifically told me that I came to the meeting with a painful leg, as well as with a heart full of pain and sorrow stemming from family background. It was amazingly so real. He prayed for me and asked me to obtain one of the anointing oils available during the program. I did and he blessed the oil instructing me to use it on the affected parts of my body. My testimony is that God healed me as well as revealed the demonic agents that were operating in my family. My own biological father even confessed to being responsible for the pain and sorrow that has been going on in our family. I thank God for the man of God and wish that God would continue to send us vessels of deliverance with power and anointing like Rev. Don. Sister Amaka, Nigeria

L G Morgan Releases a New Music Album Titled

‘Be Grateful to God’ LG Morgan, formerly known as Henroy Morgan, is the son of Henrietta and Lester Morgan. His original name at birth was Level George Morgan. He began singing at the age of 6 at Full Truth Church of God in St. Catherine, Jamaica, where his mother remains the pastor after 30 years in the ministry. By the time LG was 13 years old, he was sneaking out of Church early in order to join other musical entertainers performing dancehall style music. Although this often got him into trouble with his mother, LG’s father, Lester Morgan realized that his son had a passion for dancehall music, and so he began to support his son. Despite having ups and downs while performing dancehall music, LG continued to develop and hone his singing skills. He recorded his first single ‘Hey Girl’ with Arabic Records, and soon teamed up with Stereo One sound where he performed alongside artists like Stiche, Wolfman and many others. He later followed up performances with various reggae artists. LG migrated to Canada in 1989. It became apparent to LG that he needed a change in his life. He started attending Church again upon returning from Jamaica to visit his parents and grandmother. He attended a Sunday service at West Toronto Church of God and was moved by a persuasive sermon by Pastor George S. Peart. It was at this time he realized his calling by God. Months later on January 26, 2000 with his loving wife Aldene Morgan by his side, the couple were both baptized at this same Church. Today, they are proud parents of Lucreshia and Alexander Morgan. On one of the Sundays in Church, LG gave a testimony informing the congregation that he was once a reggae artist. The congregation urged him to sing a song of worship but he declined. Eight months later, the Lord instructed him to sing ‘Because He Lives’, and he obeyed. Ever since he has been singing to the glory of God. His style is upbeat gospel music. LG gives thanks to all of God’s children who endure to fulfill his work through Christ’s teachings as well as through gospel music. He gets his inspiration from Jesus Christ through his teachings and life. He has two albums in the market with the latest being ‘Be Grateful’, for further information on how to book him for a performance at your event please call 647.802.0082 or Email: LGMUSMINISTRY@YAHOO.CA

Word from our Father – U.S.A Rev. Daniel Garza

My Destiny

White Wings Int'l Healing Ministry

John 8:14 --- “Jesus answered and said unto them, though I bear record of my self, y et my record is true; for I k now where I came, and where I go; but y ou cannot tell where I come and where I go.” Jesus made it very clear to the religious people who were blindly serving their traditions that all His actions were tied to His destiny. He stated, "I k now where I came from, and where I am going." He knew where he was going. He preached, healed the sick, and cast out demons because He knew His destiny. What was His destiny? Where was He going? The cross? Yes, but it was more. For even the cross was a step He took with an even higher, eternal destiny in sight. Jesus knew that after the cross would come the resurrection and the ascending to heaven, and that one day He would come back for the Church --His bride. He saved, healed, and delivered people so that they could be free -- free from bondage of the devil and free to enter into communion with Him now as His Church and as His bride. He knew He was destined to be the bridegroom and He carried all of His ministry in light of that destiny. Everything He did --- miracles, signs, wonders, the work of the cross --- He did because He knew where He was going, and all of these works brought Him one step closer to laying hold of that destiny, one step closer to the marriage supper of the Lamb. Abraham was very much aware that there was a special purpose for his life --- that he was a man of destiny. He knew that God had given him the land of Canaan and that his descendants would be a great nation. To

34

www.milesmag.com

lay hold of that, Abraham left everything behind and in faith followed the LORD. He knew that his destiny was not just to have many children and populate a land. His destiny was to enter that place where he and his descendants would live in the very presence of God and have communion with him. The awesome result of that communion was that one day God would use Abraham's descendants to bless all nations --- to bring all nations into that same destiny of experiencing the life and presence of God and having communion with him. God's primary purpose for his life was to live in the presence of God and have communion with him. Let's talk about Moses. God had told Moses that the children of Israel could enter the Promised Land but that he would not go with them. In other words, God was offering Moses all the covenant blessings that had been promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob with one exception --- His presence. They could have the land, the blessings, the power and everything else, but God would not go with them and they would not have His presence. How interesting. We can have God's blessings and power without His presence. Moses, however, chose the presence of God. Look at the cry of his heart. "God if y ou don't go with us, we don't want the Promised Land with all its blessings. For y ou are what mak es the land special. It is not what we hav e or what we attain or accomplish that sets us apart from all the rest of the earth. It is y our presence. " After studying Abraham and Moses, I realized that what I was missing was the intimate presence of God. I had all the outward blessings, but I did not know God nor truly abide in His presence. So I began to pray, "God, show me your ways, let me know you,

and let me see your glory." The more I prayed that prayer, the more my focus began to change. The LORD began to reveal to me that His primary calling and purpose for my life, the destiny he had planned for me, was to know him, to have intimate communion with him, and to seek his presence. I have now realized that my destiny is not to be a great preacher or build a great ministry. I am called to know my LORD Jesus and experience the fullness of his presence. I just know that I have not yet arrived. But I have heard His call and am sure that this is my destiny. For that reason I press on to know Him. A True Go s pel Mo del Particular individuals anointed by God will carry fresh apostolic vision and burdens in the area of equipping, outreach and missions, and will lead the Body with a true gospel model. They will preach to the poor, heal the sick, and work the miraculous in order to reach the needs of the broken and bring the gospel to the nations. The LORD will be honoring their love and faith by releasing increased empowerment, favor, and resource. Many Christians will come into unexpected financial blessings and increase with the next season. The LORD will test their hearts and will be watching for those who are trustworthy stewards of Kingdom provision. Those who are found to carry a single Kingdom focus will be rewarded with a second wave of blessing which will far exceed the first. Great grace, great power and great provision will be given to the mature Church of Christ. Acts 4:33-35 --- "And with great power the apostles were giv ing witness to the resurrection of the LORD Jesus, and abundant grace was upon them all. For there was not a needy person among them, for all who were owners of land or houses would sell them and bring the proceeds of the sales, and lay them at the apostles feet, and they, would be distributed to each, as any had need."

New Wine – Old Wineskins Part Two

You see we ALL want to be seen, to be recognized (it feeds our ego). Ahhh, the eyes, they are the windows to the soul. We all want to be an EYE in the body – they are beautiful, everyone notices the eyes. We don’t want to be an EAR, they exude wax and just do not engender that same sense of attraction. But are they thus less important? No, not at all, and anyone who has lost their hearing will tell you just how important they are to the overall function of the body. Brethren and sisters – don’t try to be what you are not. It’s ok to be an ear, or a foot or a liver, if that is the part of the body to which our master has called you – and together, all the body will function for the good of the whole body. Remember that it is NOT YOUR BODY – we are the Body of Christ. He is the head and we are the members, and He has placed you in the body and empowered you with UNIQUE GIFTS that ONLY you can perform. If you do not perform them, He will call some other part of the body to do it – but you were His first choice, and it is you fulfilling your God-given calling that would be best for the body. But in the final analysis, God has to call others to fill in and cover for other members who do not step up to fulfill their place and their calling in the body. Sadly, it is often the pastor who must step up and fulfill MOST if not ALL the functions of the body – and this is NOT what God intended. Remember that the Pastor was only ONE of the multiple gifted individuals who was placed by God to build His Church. RARELY will you find ONE person who possesses all of the gifts (as a matter of fact, it is this author’s opinion that you will never find such a person, because it was never God’s intention that the Church rest upon one person for all the gifts). It is not fair to that person, nor is it fair to the Church, nor to all the gifted individuals that God has placed within the Church, who will never thus fulfill the work that God has called them to do and never get to exercise their God-given gifts within the Church… There were actually THREE specific roles gifted to the Church, sent by God “for the Perfecting of the saints, and for the Work of the ministry and for the Edify ing of the body of Christ”… * EVANGELISTS, * PASTORS & * TEACHERS, and these 3 are to build upon the foundation of the Church, which has already been laid by the apostles and prophets of old… 1 . EVANGELISTS are needed to very specifically LEAD LOST SOULS to the CROSS of CHRIST… Evangelists are needed to POINT SOULS TO CHRIST – TO EVANGELIZE the unbeliever, to bring the message of SALVATION to the lost souls who are perishing all around us. God has a message of hope for the lost and he has sent Evangelists, who “k nowing therefore the terror of the Lord, persuade men to FLEE to Christ and to FLEE from the Wrath to Come” 2 Cor. 5:11. There is much that could be said herein regarding this necessary function within the Church and how in today’s Church structure, it is the least understood and most overlooked gift of all. Is it any wonder that the world thinks the Church has

36

www.milesmag.com

lost its effectiveness when they see us “playing Church”, staying safely within our 4 walls, separated from the world and imploring the world to come inside if they want to hear about Christ – when in fact we were NEVER instructed to invite people to come to our Church? We were COMMANDED, however, to GO into all the world (yes even in your neighborhood and workplace – but to go where the people are) and to lead souls to Christ, and it is the Evangelist who must lead this charge. Once souls are led to Christ and are born again: 2 . PASTORS are needed to SHEPHERD and to GUIDE these new converts all through their journey from infancy to adulthood… The Bible refers to these new believers as “newborn babies”. A baby cannot feed itself, nor clothe itself. It is helpless and needs someone to help it in almost every aspect of life… Over time, they grow and mature and they develop into childhood and become adolescents, and eventually become adults – but all along the way, they need guidance. Just as sheep need a shepherd, believers need a pastor… The psalmist of Israel could say “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He mak es me to lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside the still waters, he continually restores my soul, he leads me in the way s of righteousness. His rod and staff comfort me because I fear nothing when he is around”. Pardon my paraphrasing, but you get the picture… God grant us Pastors in the Church today, who can guide and shepherd His people through this wilderness journey… These Pastors/Shepherds do not have to be the most skilled teachers, but they must be able to lead the sheep to where they can be fed… This brings us to the 3rd gifted person placed by God in the local Church… 3 . TEACHERS - are servants who are very specifically gifted by God to TEACH and FEED His children… These are those who have DEVOTED their lives to the study of God’s word – and not for their own benefit only, but so they can feed God’s children. 1 Pet 2:2 speaks of “newborn babes, desiring the sincere milk of the word that they may grow”. So a skilled TEACHER will use wisdom in providing basic teaching for new believers, and deeper truths for the more advanced believer. New believers are too young to be fed the deeper truths of God’s word - they would not understand them and it would be like giving a T-bone steak to a newborn baby who could not eat it or digest it properly.

Newborn babies need milk and over time they develop a stronger digestive system that can handle other food… So, the Church today needs TEACHERS who can step up and fulfill their God-given function in the Church to feed God’s people accordingly. Not only teaching for the newborn babies, but digging deep into God’s word and providing the DEEPER truths which will FEED the spiritually ADULT believer as well… This was a problem with the Church at Corinth – in that Paul came back to them years after their conversion and they were still like babies – feeding only on the milk and they had never matured on to the deeper truths of God’s word. It would be like you and I meeting a grown man sucking on a bottle of milk – we would really wonder about them… It’s time for God’s people to GROW UP, and to MATURE in the understanding of God’s word – and how will that happen unless we have GIFTED TEACHERS who are devoted to this specific function within the Church… All of the above gifted individuals may be full time, or part time in God’s work. Paul was a tent-maker, Peter was a fisherman, Matthew was a tax-collector and the list goes on and on… There is no shame in earning an income from the labor of your hands, so that you are free to do what God has called you to do, and answering to no man, but God only… The problem today is that the Church has created for itself a problem… The Bible says that no man puts NEW WINE into an OLD WINESKIN, as the new wine will grow and expand and BURST the old wineskin, and we are seeing the wineskin (the Church) bursting at the seams today. The NEW WINE, NEW TRUTH was discovered in the Reformation, by men of God such as John Huss, Martin Luther, John Wesley and others – that truth being “Justification by Repentance and Faith in Jesus Christ alone”. This TRUTH has grown and expanded like NEW WINE, but unfortunately these early reformers and the various reformers ever since, put that new wine into a very similar system to that of which it came out – thus an OLD WINESKIN. That being a very specific and organized CLERGY system, whereby the CHURCH MEMBERS fulfill their responsibility of simply filling a Church seat and the PASTOR (one person) is responsible for Evangelizing the lost, plus Shepherding and Teaching the Church. The task is impossible and insurmountable for one person, given the limitations of this system. The Church members no longer need to study God’s word for that is what we “pay” a pastor to do. It was never intended that ONE PERSON be responsible for the “Perfecting of the saints, for the Work of the Ministry, and for the Edifying of the Body of Christ”, no matter how gifted this person may be – this was NEVER God’s plan… It is from within some of the various members of the Church that individuals need to STIR up the GIFT that is in them, and EXERCISE that gift among the Church! And the Pastors MUST encourage this, without feeling threatened or challenged. It is right and proper and necessary for the edification of the whole body of Christ, that the people of God may be fully equipped to accomplish every good work to which they have been called. Pastors must be continually looking for GIFTED individuals from within their Church and encourage them to fulfill the very specific ministry to which they have been called. In most cases it will be an itinerant ministry, where Evangelists

and Teachers move freely from Church to Church according to their gift and the need, and according to where the Spirit leads them. It is the responsibility of the Pastor/Shepherd, to GUARD the flock, and they must thus be careful NOT to lay hands suddenly on anyone, but rather they must observe the fruits in the lives of these individuals and be careful against false teaching and against wrong intentioned people. The Pastor has a responsibility to KNOW WHO they bring into the Church to evangelize the lost and to teach God’s people – as the responsibility rests with them as the Shepherd. It is they who have been called to LEAD the saints of God to where they can rest and be fed, and even to where they must sometimes be disciplined (the ROD and STAFF of Psalm 23)… The Pastor’s job is ESSENTIAL for the well-being of the flock, but they must SEEK OUT, and ENCOURAGE the Evangelists and Teachers to rise up and fulfill their ministry in the Church… And when the whole body is working TOGETHER as ONE – it is a beautiful thing, just as the human body has been so fearfully and wonderfully made – so is the body of Christ when it is functioning as God intended – and he intended it to be so “until we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the k nowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with ev ery wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness… . That we may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, ev en Christ, from whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which ev ery joint supplies, according to the effectual work ing in the measure of ev ery part, mak es for the increase of the body unto the edify ing of itself in lov e.” Ephesians 4:12-16 We can continue this study in more depth at another time – as there is so much more that could be said and so much more that the Church needs to know, in this regard…

We are all participants in a fast paced world spinning us on a pedestal and propelling us like a roller-coaster towards various directions of life. I see everyone strapped with portfolios of ambitions, opinions, visions, agendas and views of life, while others are mere bystanders, literally waiting for tide of change to impact their lives, like the man who waited at the pool of Bethesda for thirty-eight years just for someone to come by and lead him into the waters to receive his long awaited breakthrough (John 5:1-18). The wind of change is blowing ceaselessly and relentlessly, while our adversary is on a rampage looking for whom to devour. Life seems like survival of the fittest; others count it as a vicious cycle. It is the role

hopefulness. His losses became gain. Are you misinterpreting or misrepresenting your situation, or do you trust God for that remarkable divine intervention he can bring out of your “it is over” circumstances? I encourage you to apply faith in all things and see the power of God change your ordinary to extraordinary, incomplete to complete and natural to supernatural state of mind. Let us look at the story of Moses, how he led the Israelites out of Egypt and through the crossing over journey. This movement opened their eyes to see nothing other than a calamitous end. Their plight came to a standstill as they saw the intimidation of the massive Red Sea before them and behind them, the enemies on horses, the

Moses to send spies to the land of Canaan which was blessed with milk and honey, He wanted to hear the report of man. Evidently, their mission to spy the land was as true as expected, but a general consensus was that the land was inhabited by “Giants”, and they likened themselves as “grasshoppers”. Power was now relinquished to the inhabitants of Canaan and the mission to go and possess their possession would have been aborted if not for the likes of Caleb, whose vision was completely spiritual. How you see a situation determines the outcome of victory. I want you to readjust

DIVINE VISION we play in the perception and interpretation of our challenges that stands to determine the impact and effectual evidence manifested in our lives. This brings me to ask the question, “What do you see when life seems so hopeless and the future so bleak. Do friends become unfriendly and things appear suddenly out of reach and your mind is no longer at ease?” This was Job’s wilderness experience, losing everything he had to his adversary. His wife could not stand this test of time and advised him to curse his God and die. Friends mocked him, but he endured and waited on the Lord. In the eyes of man this was a hopeless situation in an unforeseen circumstance, but from hopelessness Job’s life was transformed to

riders and chariots in hot pursuit to forestall their freedom. They had reached a point of no return and God empowered Moses to pacify his people with words of hope - “ Fear y e no t , s t and s t i l l , and s ee t he s al v at i o n o f t he Lo rd, whi ch he wi l l s hew t o y o u t o day : fo r t he Eg y p t i an s w h o m y e h av e s e e n t o day , y e s hal l s ee t hem ag ai n no mo re fo r ev er. ” Exodus 14:13 Beloved, I encourage you not to look at the size of your problem but look unto the magnitude of God’s faithfulness and strength. All you need to do is hold your peace and let Him fight for you. The high mountains you see now, you shall see them no more. “Pastor, you don’t understand the terrible situation I am going through.” This expression is so rampant among believers. Your motive to speak negatively to capitalize on your personal experience gives the adversary an edge to walk over you, and I say this has to come to a stop. I want you to know that this tongue has the power of life and death, and we have to curtail its usage for our good. Let us not forget that as a man thinketh so is he. It is not too late to start making positive pronouncements to your life, to your family, your health and in whatever situation you may find yourself, for whatever you decree in the name of Jesus, it shall stand. God sees divinely, “Fo r t he Lo rd s eet h no t as man s eet h; fo r man l o o k et h o n t he o ut ward ap p earance, b ut t he Lo rd l o o k et h o n t he heart " (1 Samuel 16:7). No wonder when God commanded

your spiritual glasses and mirrors or the way you view things in the natural to start viewing them in the supernatural way of God. Ask Him to anoint your eyes and ears to see and hear wondrous things from heaven. If the same God opened the eyes of Saul of Tarsus to salvation and service for the Saviour, He can do it for you too. Be expectant. “Ey e hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither hav e entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that lov e him” (1 Corinthians 2:9). I pray that you keep the faith for the manifestation of His glory. In conclusion, I pray for you that wherever you are experiencing barrenness God will deposit abundance of fruitfulness in Jesus name. In every wilderness experience God will cause bread to fall from heaven and rivers of water to come out of the rock for your sake, in Jesus name. Every grievous illness that cannot be healed will receive divine healing by the stripes of Jesus. The Lord said, when we are weak we should say we are strong. I pray for divine strength in every area of your life in Jesus name. As the Lord caused Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego to survive the fiery furnace, no fire shall come near or burn you in Jesus name. When David confronted Goliath the giant, the size of the enemy did not deter him from his vision, and I pray also that God in his infinite mercy will remove that which clogs your faith in victory and make room where you can survive impossible circumstances, in Jesus mighty name I pray. I aspire to inspire…..

PRAYER COLUMN

Notice how prayer is gradually fading away in the life of so many Christians who are supposed to be fire-brand prayer warriors. The Bible warns about the dangers of not being prayerful. In truth prayer is the key to breakthroughs and communications with heaven, but it has become almost unattainable to find Christians these days praying to God fervently. James 5:16 “Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” The fervency in prayer is the force that breaks down the walls of darkness, so what if the Church of God (by this I mean Christians), cannot pray anymore? What will be the future of Christianity or perhaps I should ask the question, why are we not praying when we know that the key to our life lies in prayers? I do sincerely believe that it is not a matter of Christians not liking to pray, but it is a case of prayer quickly becoming a very hard exercise to do. Why I say this is because when you ask any Christian if they wish to be able to pray effectively, of course their answer is in the affirmative, but when it comes to the doing then the problem of tiredness, lack of time, sleep and the rest of the excuses arise. I do strongly believe that the problem has to do with the power and motivation to pray. Yes, if we all had motivation we would be praying every day and night. Actually when people are motivated they never stop. For example, a lot of us do not like our jobs but still every day we wake up and be at work on time. Why? Because we are motivated by the pay; we need the money to solve our various daily needs so we are not perturbed by the fact that we do not really like or enjoy the job and would have wished to be somewhere

40

www.milesmag.com

else. The motivation is what we lack to pray, but I believe that the Bible provides that motivation in prayer if only we can recognize it and use it to power up our prayer life, because the Church is speedily loosing it. Even pastors don’t attend prayer meetings today, let alone the congregation. Habakkuk 3:17-19 “Though the fig tree may not blossom, Nor fruit be on the vines; Though the labor of the olive may fail, And the fields yield no food; Though the flock may be cut off from the fold, And there be no herd in the stalls18 Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. 19 The Lord God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer's feet, And He will make me walk on my high hills.” Note the underlined sentence from the above scripture. In chapter one Habakkuk begins with so many questions. Why does the wicked prosper in evil and the Lord stand back and watch? Does it mean that there is no need to pray and cry out to God anymore? But He quickly realizes that God does things at His own time. God works based on visions and dreams, and though it may take time but it must surely come to pass. Now when he realized this truth everything suddenly began to make sense to him all over again, and thus he was motivated to pray in spite of all the negative vibes around him. Now that power that motivates one to pray and pray effectively is the Joy of the Lord. When you have joy in the Lord of your salvation, remember and take cognizance of the true meaning of salvation (Safety –in simple language), then when a man or woman feels safe all things are or will be well eventually. The Word ‘Safety’ is very important to every living soul. People do everything to

feel safe, including becoming Christians, getting married, going to school, securing a job, as well as praying. But it becomes tough to keep feeling safe when it is determined by the factors around you. For example there is no marriage without its ups and downs, there is no economy that does not face a shaky period at one point or the other, and so it becomes inevitable that safety based on environmental factors will always be on shaky ground. But the word ‘Joy’ is not based on the things around us. It is not influenced by any human factor but is purely based on divine promises from God. Read the book of Habakkuk again and again and surely you will see that he ends by saying that he knows that God will eventually make him to walk on his high places. The man is sure. He has blessed assurance in his heart and so he is motivated to pray all the time no matter what vibe that is around him, even when it seems that his vineyard is not producing harvest as expected. I want to encourage you to look to the God of your salvation as one who has and will never fail. Listen. Sometimes things in life can get very nasty, humiliating, and hopeless, but keep believing that He who promised is able and abundantly able to deliver that which we are believing. You were never created an accident, so you will not be one. He who began the journey of your life is more than able to accomplish it. Put all your trust in God and hold on to your joy. It is the strength that you have to keep praying, and one day something will cause a change that will promote you to your rightful position in life. Nehemiah 8:10 “10 Then he said to them, "Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength."

Youth Corner

The ‘Sticks and Stones’ Generation

Miles magazine is about inspiration, because all the great things of life were founded by inspiration whether in the Bible or in life generally. If you would interview all the people that have achieved one success story or the other they all got their kick from inspiration. Some will tell you they read it up somewhere, or they heard it from somebody, or they saw someone that inspired them to be or not to be like that. The common denominator is inspiration. In the world before, you could only reach your family and thus inspire

42

www.milesmag.com

them, but in the world that is today, through either social media or wave technology, inspiration can fly and be caught in the air. When we look at the world and its peculiar happenings, we notice that inspiration accounts for much of the things that we are witnessing today, the other of course being the internet, but I would discuss that in another section. The youths are caught in the middle of all these, and as long as they are exposed to evil then we

do and will continue to have a problem. They are confronted daily with the hideous tax of identifying and separating the wrongs from the right. This is not impossible, nor is it a very hard tax provided the right attitude comes to play, but and I must repeat, provided the right attitude is at play. Here Comes the Problem!!! The problem then arises because the right attitude is missing. A friend of mine once preached and said that the days of ‘Agape

love’ (love that is wholly selfless and spiritual) are gone. Now I really want you to understand that it is these kind of love that ties the child to his/her parents, and if we are to accept this as gone then we must come to the reality that the bond of family is dead and buried as well. What this indicates is that the child does not care to follow family values anymore not minding if they lead to salvation of the soul or damnation of same. I pray we have not gotten to that point because the eventual final effect will be far worse than what we think we are experiencing now. Ever heard the expression ‘Sticks and Stone don’t not hurt me?’ Yep, it is even in a popular song of years not too long

gone and very popular in the dictionary of over 75 percent of our youths. It simply means that I do not care about values, morals and public opinion say about me. The fact that my father thinks me a stubborn no good child does not mean anything to me. I would never be perturbed by it neither will I give it a second thought. It is my life, and as such I would live it in any way and manner that I deem fit and conducive to me and me alone. I travel quite a bit to different countries and continents of the world. I cannot but notice the changes that are happening and

that have taken place amongst our youths. Changes in culture, dressing, attitude, social life and morality. I come from Nigeria and something positive needs to happen fast or sooner than later the culture will turn into a cultivated disaster. But what about a place like Canada and the United States of America. How is the system in regards to our youths and young adults? Are they any better? The fruit of their years of labor is being reaped in every aspect of the word. The youths have been groomed from school not to care about what their immigrant parents tell them is the culture, but rather to embrace a life of ‘Sticks and Stones’. There is an advert on television

of your destiny in your hands. You also have the time to build it right. Do not leave yourself not caring what your parents, guardians, or society say. It would come back to haunt you. Any person who wants to be great must achieve it in the eyes of the world. Greatness is never hidden. It shines forth like a light for others to see and use to find their own pathway. You must begin to listen and be sensitive to your environment. In your home you have to care about what your parents tell you, irrespective of what you judge them to be in life. If you think them failures, then listen to them and not make the same mistakes they made, and if you think them successful, listen to them so that you can

achieve greater success than them.

I do really believe that every human need some form of control, and once the absence of such exists then watch out, for the fruit would be destruction. You must care about public opinion. Agreed, just because it is a public opinion does not mean it is right, but at least it helps you know how and why the world perceives things about you.

A word is enough for the wise. The question now is, “Are you Wise?” Please do not answer, but simply go out there and show forth the virtues that qualify you as one with wisdom, but in all things learn to avoid the epidemic called ‘Sticks and Stones don’t hurt me.’ Because in reality it does.

THE LAW OF

PICTURES “As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? 3 My tears have been my food day and night, While they continually say to me, "Where is your God?" 4 When I remember these things, I pour out my soul within me. For I used to go with the multitude; I went with them to the house of God, With the voice of joy and praise, With a multitude that kept a pilgrim feast. 5 Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him For the help of His countenance.” Psalm 42:1-5

In this passage of scripture, we see a leader who is dry and thirsty. You may ask, “How can a leader be dry?” I would burst your bubble by letting you know that this is a very peculiar faze in the life of any true leader. Every leader experiences a wilderness period, a point in time when nothing seems to be exciting or motivating. In Verses 1-2, the Psalmist suggests that this leader in questions was saying, “I used to lead the people in a parade to God, and now I can’t even find Him myself!” What a terrible situation to be in, especially when there are so many people feeding off your enegy. But that again is why leaders

44

go through this time of spiritual wilderness. The followers or disciples often do not make it any easier for their leaders by not being sensitive to the needs of their leaders. A leader also needs a time of refreshing and they also need pampering and time-offs to help them recuperate what has been dished out of them. Fortunately this particular leader as does so many, recaptures his perspective in verse 5. He begins to tell himself the truth, and if you read on to the final verse of Psalm 42, he concludes that God will prevail. The only thing that keeps a leader leading with vision and perception is a trust in God that in all things He will prevail. When a leader sees self as the solution to all the problems of his team then watch out because even with the most genuine intentions, he would still fail. Do you remember the story of the great prophet Elijah who ended up speaking his own ministry to death. He saw himself as the only prophet left to carry out all the battles for God, so he was overly burdened and ended up telling God that he wished to end it all in death. The key to Psalm 42 is its humanity. I go to a lot of meetings and listen to men and women of God, great leaders in their own right, speak about being a super human who can and should conquer all obstacles in life, but inside me I feel disappointed because I know we are not being real as Christ is. We are painting a picture so perfect but impossible to attain. ‘Onl y Go d carri es the l o g o ‘Perfect’ because He i s what we

can never be, The S upreme Commander of the Whol e Uni verse’ It really does not matter how much faith you gather and exercise, you can never control the whole world. If you are blessed and highly favored, at a point in life, you will control your own destiny and make things happen for you in a way that will represent abundant life, but that is as far as you can go. Or maybe you can effect some positive vibes in the life of others which may trigger changes in their lives, but what else, then you must hand them over to the God Almighty who will now perfect that which concerns them. In the psalm above, this leader realizes that he cannot lead the people any further than where he himself stands. He refuses to fake it. He doesn’t want to pretend that all is well when there is fire on the mountain. So before he could attempt to go any further, he turns to the Supreme One of Israel and cries out for help through renewal, and that is the lesson in this one. Every true leader recognizes the fact and truth that he needs God to truly lead while he directs the people on how to follow the picture. The Law of Pictures stipulates the following principles for successful leadership… 1. True l eaders must be honest wi th themsel ves about thei r state 2. They cry out to God for constant renewal 3. They refuse to fake i t; they want to model the truth for others 4. They tel l themsel ves the truth about the future Miles with extracts from the Maxwell Leadership Bible

RENEW YOUR MIND

Romans 12:2 - And be not conformed to this world: but be y e transformed by the renewing of y our mind, that y e may prov e what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. As Christians, it is very important that we get rid of every negative mindset. So many of us fail to reach our full potential because of negative thoughts. You cannot achieve positive results if you refuse to live a positive life. If you continue to harbor negativity, you will attract negative friends, negative circumstances, and you will live a negative, unfulfilled life. You will get exactly what you expect, because your thoughts, your mind, controls your actions. In Colossians 3:2 we read, “Set y our affection on things abov e, not on things on the earth.”That simply means that we should set our minds on positive things. Set our minds for success. Set our minds for victory. Set our minds for overcoming. Set our minds for the abundant life. If you don’t decide what kind of life you are going to have, if you don’t decide in what direction you want to go, the adversary is going to choose for you. He will attack you with all kinds of discouraging thoughts. As the word of God says, he is going up and down the earth “as a roaring lion, walk eth about, seek ing whom he may dev our:”(1 Peter 5:8), and it is your negative thinking that will make you fall prey to his temptations. Don’t ever start your day off in neutral or reverse. Set your mind in a positive direction. Some of us begin with prayer, but even then it is negative praying because we outline everything that is wrong with us or with our situation, starting our day with depression. Instead, say with David, “This is the day that the Lord has made: I will rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24). Even if you are physically tired, even if your health is going downhill, even if your finances are in disarray, even if your children are a source of constant worry, negative thinking won’t fix them. It is only by renewing your mind and think-

ing positively on all the things God has promised, that you will be able to make a start towards your deliverance. He has promised never to leave you nor forsake you. He has promised to supply all your needs according to His riches in glory. He has promised to give you “beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heav iness” (Isa 61:3). He has promised to wipe every tear from your eye, and to deliver you from your many afflictions. And in Isaiah 55:11 He encourages us to believe, “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me v oid, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” Don’t magnify your problems; magnify your God. The bigger we make God, the smaller our problems become. Stop dwelling on what’s wrong in your life and start dwelling on what’s right. Learn to focus on your possibilities, rather than on what you can’t do. Some of us have wrong-thinking patterns instilled in us from the time we were children, but we have to renew those thought patterns to measure up to our state of salvation. Today, we need to think like over-comers. Today, we ought to accept that we have the victory. Today, we have to live like we are more than conquerors. It may not be apparent what we shall be, but we have to fake it till we make it. We have to enter His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. We may not know who holds the future, nor what the future holds, but we know Who holds our hands. When you renew your mind folks will know, and will want some of what you have. This is our first step in witnessing for Jesus. Our thought life controls our physical life, and “as a man think eth in his heart, so is he.” (Psalm 23:7). One of the first indications of a renewed mind is a changed vocabulary. Too often we say things that are not compatible with the impression we try to give of

our spirituality. I know many veteran Christians who are still prone to inadvertently spout a fourletter expletive that sounds nothing like “love”. I contend that the use of those four-letter words is an indication of a lazy, spiritually bankrupt vocabulary, and one should make every effort to replace them by the renewing of the mind. One can always find the proper descriptive term to replace such vulgar expressions. In Luke 6:45 we read, “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an ev il man out of the ev il treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is ev il: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speak eth. ” Here, we can replace “heart” with “mind”. The tongue is the fountain of the mind, and James 3:10 concedes that “Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.” This does not pertain only to others, but primarily to one’s self. Proverbs 18:21 tells us that “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that lov e it shall eat the fruit thereof.” When we renew our minds, and by extension our speech, we position ourselves to speak positive things into our lives, and into the lives of others. We can then do like Abraham who “calleth those things which be not as though they were” (Rom 4:17). We should be able to declare emphatically that the minions of this world may imprison our bodies (and this will soon become reality rather than being a figure of speech), but they cannot imprison our minds. We are at liberty to receive the unimpeachable Word of God that will effectuate the renewing of our minds, so that we may be transformed into that which God desires us to be. In conclusion, we have to appreciate that this transformation is not just a “mind thing”. We have to so believe that we have been changed that, like Paul in Romans 8:38-39, we can declare, “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the lov e of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” This transformation makes us noticeably peculiar people, enjoying a peace that surpasses understanding, making us more than conquerors, and is so manifest in our daily lives that those who see us or interact with us will be astounded by our higher level of honesty, integrity, and compassion.

Women & Discipleship Christ included women in His teachings. In Mark 7:10-11 He spoke of honoring parents, and repeated the words "father" and "mother" four times in two verses. There was a Greek word for "parents" which He could have used, but He apparently wanted to emphasize that both mother and father be honored equally. When Jesus spoke regarding discipleship, He included the females: Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division...The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother-in-law against her daughter in law. (Luke 12:51, 53). On one occasion, when Jesus was speaking to a crowd, His mother and brothers came looking for Him. When told they were seeking Him, Jesus said: Who is my mother? And who are my brethren? And he

www.milesmag.com

stretched forth his hand toward his disciples and said, Behold my mother and my brethren. For whosoever shall do the will of my Father...the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. (Matthew 12:46-50; Mark 3:31-35) This verse presents an important truth regarding your relationship to Jesus. Your relationship is not based on whether you are male or female, young or old, married or single. Your relationship is based upon doing God's will. Part of "doing God's will" is accepting Jesus as personal Savior, as God is... ...not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. (II Peter 3:9) DEFENSE OF WOMEN On two occasions, Jesus defended women. When some mothers brought their children to Jesus to be blessed, the Disciples rebuked them but Jesus said: Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not; for of such is the Kingdom of God. (Mark 10:14) When Mary of Bethany poured costly perfume on Jesus, the Disciples called it a waste. Jesus said her act would be told as a memorial wherever the Gospel was preached because she understood the plan for His death and burial and was anointing Him in preparation for it. WOMEN IN THE COMPANY OF CHRIST Christ did not call a woman as one of the twelve disciples selected at the beginning of His public ministry. To have chosen a woman for such close association would not have been considered improper. The Bible does refer to certain women who joined the traveling company of Jesus to minister:

It came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God; and the twelve were with him. And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils, And Joanna the wife

50

of Chuza, Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance. (Luke 8:1-3) Some people believe because Christ did not call any women among the original twelve, there should be no women leaders in the Church. But He also did not choose a Gentile, yet the Gospel was extended to the Gentiles and we have had many great Gentile spiritual leaders. He did not organize anything resembling most Churches today, with one pastor trained in a seminary, Sunday schools, Church boards, etc., yet we freely use these in our Church structure. Christ was always courteous to women. He never talked down or spoke angrily to them. At the age of twelve, Jesus went with his parents to a Passover Feast in Jerusalem. At the end of the first day of the return journey home, His parents could not find Him in the caravan, so they returned to the city. Finally, they found Him with the religious leaders in the temple. When His mother rebuked Him, His response was a simple explanation and then He went home with His parents and was subject (obedient) to them (Luke 2). One occasion where Jesus spoke with what might appear to be a lack of courtesy was at the wedding in Cana. When the host ran out of wine, Jesus' mother told Him and His answer was: Woman, what have I to do with thee? Mine hour is not yet come. (John 2:4) This did not mean He did not respect the suggestion that He do something about the problem. The term "woman" was not one of disrespect. In the proper timing, Jesus did what Mary desired and miraculously turned water into wine. Mary was not offended at His answer, but told the servants: Whatsoever He saith unto you, do it. (John 2:5). When the mother of James and John came to Jesus with the selfish request that her sons be seated at His right and left sides in the Kingdom of Heaven, He did not rebuke her. He replied: Ye know not what ye ask..to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom prepared of my Father.(Matthew 20:20-23). Read Matthew 15:21-28 where a Gentile

woman asked for her daughter to be healed. Christ's answer did not reflect discourtesy because the word "dog" was a commonly used term referencing the Gentiles. The exchange with this woman ended in Christ's highest commendation, "O woman, great is thy faith. There are three incidents recorded in Scripture where Jesus ministered to adulteresses. Look these up and read them in your Bible: John 8:2-11: The woman caught in adultery. Luke 7:38-39: The adulteress washing Jesus feet. John 4:5-30: The woman at the well. In each case, Jesus displayed courtesy, love, and a forgiving attitude. The encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well is interesting in studying the relationship of Jesus to women. The Samaritans were enemies of the Jews and were considered uneducated and offensive. In addition, this woman was an adulteress. The word "Gentile" refers to nations other than Israel. But Jesus chose this woman, a Gentile and a sinner, as the first person (as far as Scripture records) to whom He revealed that He was the Messiah. He considered her capable of grasping this great spiritual truth. She became an evangelist instantly and ran to the city to bring people to Christ. COMPASSION ON WOMEN A special characteristic of Christ's attitude toward women was compassion. When He raised the son of the widow of Nain from the dead, He appears to have done it primarily out of compassion for her: And when the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said unto her, weep not. (Luke 7:13) It was His compassion for widows which aroused His anger against those who prayed for public show and then stole widow's houses: Beware of the scribes....which devour widows houses, and for a show make long prayers. (Luke 20:46-47) When He fed the multitudes, which included women, it was because He had compassion on them. Read these accounts in Mark 6 (noting verse 34) and Mark 8 (noting verse 2). Jesus so valued women in His days on earth that He gave them special place in his ministry. We must as well, in the life of today, value women in the church, society and especially in the family nucleus. That way we may enjoy the blessings and Joy that they are supposed to bring into our lives.
