I think we were all holding a collective breath until the first anniversary of Superstorm Sandy passed before we could officially welcome the holidays. Many are still living with the constant reminder of what they lost. But we are made of strong stuff and many of those who lost their jobs have come back in a big way, some by launching their own businesses. As a community we have been privy to their enthusiasm and creativity and we will continue to showcase their talents and products.

Happy Thanksgivinguh
The Jewish Festival of Lights and Thanksgiving fall on the same day this year, and has been coined, “Thanksgivinguh.” This has opened up a realm of new cuisine including a spin on the classic Thanksgiving dinner, you’ll see sweet potato latkes with cranberry-apple sauce alongside the turkey this year.
Menorah + Turkey = Menurkey
This is the first time in history that Hanukkah and Thanksgiving will coincide. The Menurkey was conceived, designed and named by 9-year-old Asher Weintraub, a fourth grader from New York City.

According to the World Economic Forum’s annual report on the gender equality gap, the United States ranks first in the education category. The WEF measures women’s economic opportunity, education, health, and political empowerment. Overall, the United States came in 23rd, indicating that we have a ways to go as a society towards realizing full equality. In measuring education equality, the gap between women’s and men’s current access to education was captured through ratios of women to men in primary-, secondary- and collegelevel education. The longer-term view of education equality found that the United States’ ability to educate women and men in equal numbers is captured through the ratio of the female versus male literacy rate.

The secret is finally out: Northport’s Leg Lamp Lighting now draws hundreds who pay homage to the lamp found in the basement of the Northport Hardware store in 2005. Owner Bill Reichert told Milieu, “We’re carrying on a tradition that has started out as a folly and keeps growing.” (Northport Hardware Store, 90 Main St., Northport)

Malala Yousafzai, the 14-year-old Pakistani girl shot by the Taliban for protesting their anti-education laws for girls, is the face of global gender equality in education. While promoting her book “I Am Malala” on The Daily Show last month, the Nobel Peace Prize nominee told Jon Stewart, when he questioned what she might tell a Talib who might confront her again for voicing her pro-education views, “I would tell him how important education is and that I would even want education for your children as well,” the Pakistani girl said. “That’s what I want to tell you. Now do what you want.” Pakistan and Yemen ranked last in gender equality by the World Economic Forum. Yet by encouraging women to speak out all over the world, that gap gradually lessens.

Bling Sting pepper spray is encased in a glitzy cylinder that looks like a fashion accessory. Pepper spray is a non-lethal form of protection and while no one can predict an assault, Blingsting can help ward off an attack. Your personal safety should always be top of mind, so while you’re out and about, clip Blingsting to your handbag, belt loop or dog leash and feel more confident if you have to go it alone. Israeli designer, Kobi Levi, has made shoe design into an art form. His WitchCraft collection was inspired by iconic Disney villains like Ursula from the Little Mermaid, Maleficent in Sleeping Beauty and the Evil Queen from Snow White. “Walt Disney characters represent the ultimate fantasy world. I loved them as a child and still do today. The Villains are special because they are iconic and interesting,” Levi explains in a statement to Milieu. “Maleficent is elegant, respectable, impressive and wise. Ursula is funny, amusing and cunning. The Evil Queen is cold, distant, majestic and beautiful. The main guideline for the design work was to stay true to the main features and to the essence of each character. This means that the shoe becomes a canvas on which the silhouette, lines and colors of each character are displayed. As challenging as the work was, so is the reward in seeing these iconic ladies come to life.” Levi’s shoes have been coined “wearable sculpture” and are limited to 20 pairs produced per style. All of the women involved, from the models to the production crew and the staff at Bocu Salon, brought so much talent and overall fun to the project.” Maria Polsinelli, owner of Bocu Salon and Spa, opened her home for the photo shoot and says, “I feel so very fortunate to have so much; healthy family, successful business. There is no better feeling than giving back and feeling good in the process!” (MomsWhoKick.com)

...All the Way ‘Tis the season to be jolly, so read on and catch the holiday spirit with these inspiring stories. By Beverly Fortune and Sara Anne Fingerman
Amazing Grace It was organized chaos in Karin Caro’s office. The Smithtown mother of four is not only our cover model, she’s an entrepreneur, philanthropist and the president of Blu Chip Marketing. This day, her children were off from school, and she had two clients waiting for her undivided attention. She didn’t miss a beat. Karin has already integrated her children into her business and her numerous charitable endeavors. Her oldest son, Alex, 14, was tweeting, Brendan, 13, was on Instagram, daughter Brielle, 12, was posting to Facebook, and Connor, 10, was taking pictures during our interview. Brittany, her assistant, was overseeing the mad social media that was transpiring between the Caro children. It was fast and furious. “It’s easy to send them to camp,” Karin says, but she prefers to take her children with her to work and events whenever possible. “How do I motivate them? You lead by example,” she says. Karin and her husband, AJ, are among a growing number of parents who are emphasizing the benefit of giving to others, while they gain a greater awareness of the community and its needs. Many young professionals such as the Caros struggle with how their talents can be used to have a substantial impact in the community. Karin wanted to include charitable giving as part of her business plan for Blu Chip. “I feel such pride in helping people,” she says. The Caro’s community involvement runs the gamut, from special needs children to seniors, from veterans to the homeless and animals. “We usually make a trip to Target and purchase a bunch of toys that are given to the Salvation Army as part of their Angel Tree program, something we encourage all of our clients and friends to participate in,” Karin says. “The tree is filled with wishes of needy children for Christmas. When my kids see what these children are asking for, pajamas, coats, shoes...it sets the tone for what the holidays mean: giving. Not just gifts, but acts of the heart. Love.” The Caros recently began collecting new sheets, blankets, pillows and towels to donate to seniors at the Catholic Charities senior housing units. Karin spearheaded the drive and has gotten other people in the community involved. “We asked the Suffolk County Girl Scouts to participate and they will be collecting donations for us as well, Karin says. “We call this project ‘Linens and Love.’”

The Entire caro Family donates their time to deliver much-needed baby items and supplies to non profits and families across long island.
To find ways to show her children that charity is process-oriented and not product-oriented, with the support of some local families, Karin founded United Kids of America (UKA). “Kids take their individual talents and teach each other how to do a project and then work on it for charity,” Karin explains. “My daughter Brielle is artistic in fashion and design, so she helped the group make dog collars and pet wear to donate to Little Shelter.” Charitable giving makes their family time together even more valuable. For Karin, the satisfaction she receives from helping others is in the little things. Recently as the Caros were returning to their car from shopping, a stranger approached them, Karin recalls, “This woman called out to me and started to cry and said, ‘OMG, it’s you! Can I hug you? You have no idea what you have done for my family.’” Karin was moved. “There is nothing more rewarding than what my kids feel about who I am and what I represent,” she says. “My wish is for them to carry on our legacy of love and care for Long Island. To come up with their own ideas, but no matter what, to always be lending a hand and to help with the things that can change a person’s life.”

A Lesson in Giving For some, having a birthday close to Christmas makes them feel slighted in some way. Victoria Glass of Lake Grove is only seven years old, but she felt blessed. With the support and approval of her mother, Joyce, Victoria decided to donate her birthday gifts to a charitable organization for children who were less fortunate. Victoria and Joyce looked on Facebook for places where they could donate the new toys and discovered a foundation called “Matthew’s Wish.” Matthew Allen, of Hampton Bays, was diagnosed with nephritic syndrome, a kidney disorder, when he was only two and a half years old. As a grantee of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, instead of choosing a trip to Disney World or a visit from a famous athlete, Matthew wanted to fill an 18-wheel semi-truck with toys and deliver them to the children at Cohen’s Children Medical Center in New Hyde Park, the hospital where he was a patient for almost nine years. Matthew’s family says they used to call him “Mr. Christmas” because he always received pleasure by giving. His mother AnneMarie Allen recalls what her son said about staying in the hospital: “I know how it feels to be in here and it sucks.” When Matthew was only 13 years old, he passed away from a pulmonary embolism, not living long enough to see his wish granted. His mother created a foundation in his honor and began collecting toys, games and books to deliver to the children at Cohen’s. “The first year we met the Allens,” Joyce Glass says, ”they treated Victoria like family as she delivered the toys to the organization. For the past two years she has donated more than 100 toys and hopes to get her Brownie troop involved this year.” On December 14 Victoria will lead the Matthew’s Wish Toy Parade, which begins at Brentwood’s Main Fire Station and ends with a party at Matthew’s grandparents’ house. The Allen family announced they will match any donation up to $500 made to Matthew’s Wish. Of his grandson’s legacy, Harold Allen says, “If you’re going to give, give with your heart and expect nothing in return. That’s the only way you will learn the true value of giving.” Victoria (left) and with birthday presents collected for Matthew’s Wish Foundation

A Voice for the Voiceless Walking into a pet shop during the holiday season can be heartwarming. It seems the puppies on display couldn’t be any cuter as they play and then, if we’re lucky, we pick the one that we believe will make the perfect pet and will become an important part of the family. While snuggling and bonding with your new forever friend, have you ever asked yourself where these animals come from? Unfortunately, some pet store owners buy their animals from puppy mills, a commercial farm where females are forced to breed every time they go into heat. These dogs could give birth to 10 litters by the time they are five years old. They are treated poorly and auctioned off for pennies after they aren’t fertile enough to continue to produce puppies. Long Island philanthropist and vocalist Dahna Bender believes that she was blessed with a beautiful voice to sing on behalf of our furry friends. Instead of capitalizing on her talent, Bender records holiday classics and uses the proceeds from CD sales to benefit the National Mill Dog Foundation (NMDF), a non-profit organization that educates the public about the plight of puppy mill dogs and also rescues, rehabilitates and re-homes them. To date, more than 8,000 dogs have been saved. Two years ago, Bender was driving to her home in Greenport when she came across protesters picketing outside a pet store. She pulled over and met the woman in charge of the demonstration, Barbara Dennihy. Bender learned she had single-handedly fought to change New York State law regarding puppy mills and pet store sales. Bender knew that this was her calling. “My goal is to educate the public about the cruel realities of the commercial dog breeding industry, ‘puppy mills,’” she says. Bender traveled to Colorado to meet Theresa Strader, the founder of NMDR, and spend time with Theresa and her volunteers. She knew that this was the organization she wanted to sing for. “I thank God for being blessed to be able to have the resources and support to accomplish this goal for the greater good,” she says. “I have believed from its inception that a completely selfless act of kindness can only be successful if its purpose is pure.”

Carlos Mendes
Captain, New York Cosmos
Unwrapping a Hometown Hero This Christmas, Carlos Mendes will be celebrating his 33rd birthday. Before David Beckham was a household name, Pele (no last name required) was the rock star of the professional soccer world. In 1975, Pele was drafted by the New York Cosmos and he brought them worldwide acclaim. Long Island native Carlos Mendes was the first player recruited and signed for this dream team which plays at Hofstra University and he led them to an undefeated home season. As captain of this historic team, Carlos had the assist on the first goal of the season and has started in every game. Carlos’ soccer roots are deeply ingrained. “I started playing soccer around three or four years old. My parents threw me right in,” he says. “Both my parents are from Portugal. I’m first generation here. My dad played in Portugal but never professionally. Of course, over there, it’s just in the blood.” And that blood runs deep. His parents have been instrumental in his success, making sacrifices so their son could travel around the world with his team. “From as far back as I could remember, I fell in love with the sport. They always gave me a lot of support. It’s a big commitment, a lot of travel is involved.” Although the United States isn’t the bastion of soccer that South American and European countries are, we are catching up quickly. “Long Island is a hotbed for soccer,” Carlos says. “We have such a mixed group of people. I know from experience that soccer is huge here. It’s a great place to play.” Carlos started playing as a Pee Wee in Mineola and from the age of 12 until he went to college in Virginia, Carlos played under the tutelage of Deer Park native Cordt Weinstein, a Ruff Rider soccer player who is now a renowned trainer.
42 MILIEU Exclusively for Long Island Women
The Mineola community fostered Carlos’ love of the sport, and his commitment to his hometown is evident in his words and actions. “My brother teaches special education in Mineola High School,” he says. “This is his first year as a full-time leave replacement. He loves it and, of course, it’s special to be right there where we grew up. We had so many cousins and friends who went through that district. I love to go to my brother’s classroom and do whatever I can, whether it’s bringing in a soccer ball or just visiting.”

HOST A COOKIE EXCHANGE
Cookie Exchanges are a great way to get an assortment of Christmas cookies without killing yourself in the kitchen, and hosting an exchange is easy if you plan ahead. Invite 8-12 people; if you have more, that’s fine, there’s more goodies to go around. Ask each person what kind of cookie they plan on making so there’s no duplication. Have each guest bring containers to take their cookies home in. As people arrive, set out the cookies on a long table and label each cookie tray with the recipe name. Each guest fills their container with a dozen of each kind. Ask each guest to bring copies of their recipe and give to each guest as they leave.

Almost Home for the Holidays If you find yourself without plans for Thanksgiving Day or you just want to relax and let someone else do the cooking, there are some toprated restaurants open where you can enjoy traditional fare in a cozy atmosphere. Shandon Court in East Islip is featuring an Irish Thanksgiving this year with live entertainment. “We grew up in East Islip and used to pass Barrington’s Restaurant,” Sara Finlay recalls. Her father, Gerry, thought it would be fun to own a restaurant. “On Thanksgiving Day 2002 we officially bought it and opened Shandon Court the next day.” Sara says it was the last Thanksgiving her family would spend at home. Now you can spend your Thanksgiving with the Finlay family. They prepare traditional ham and turkey, Irish-style, and serve dinner family style. Gerry is also a professional musician and as Sara says, “plays anything with a string.” His guitar skills are so accomplished he played at Natasha and Liam Neeson’s wedding. He also leads the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade televised on NBC. It’s been said that Gerry equates owning a restaurant to playing music and has made live music an integral part of Shandon Court. 46 MILIEU Exclusively for Long Island Women

Sara recently received an email from a guest who said, “My husband and I went to Shandon for our Sunday dinner last week and it was fabulous. There was a large table having a party. The owner came in with his guitar and sang her a beautiful song. It made me cry. No matter where I go there will never be a more personal heartfelt experience like that. Shandon Court has a great personal touch, it takes you right back home."

Health Home-Made Hand Sanitizer
It’s cold and flu season and many of us are constantly using hand sanitizer. Most store-bought sanitizers contain more than 50 percent alcohol, which can be extremely drying to already parched skin. Our recipe contains tea tree oil, a potent anti-microbial and we’ve added essential oils, all of which have antiseptic properties and a lovely smell. Try lavender, lemon, pine or patchouli for your signature-scented sanitizer. (Vitamin E oil is used as a preservative, keeps for up to 4 months).
½ cup Aloe Vera Gel 1½ tsp. Witch Hazel 15 drops Tea Tree Oil 5+ drops Essential Oil 5 drops Vitamin E
Essential Oils for Natural Beauty Essential Oils are a chemical-free, natural alternative for your beauty routine and for some minor aches and pains. Many oils can be used to treat skin conditions because of their antibacterial and antiseptic properties, you might want to experiment to find which oil is right for you. Here are a few you might like to try before reaching for an OTC medication or treatment. Clove Oil Eases tooth and gum pain and and its antiseptic properties can treat insect bites, scrapes and muscle pain. Lavender Soothes headaches, aids in digestion and has anti-bacterial properties. Its scent helps calm your nerves and improve sleep and has been used for high blood pressure. Eucalyptus An anti-viral and anti-bacterial oil. Tie eucalyptus to your showerhead and the steam will open and disinfect your nasal passages and lungs. Geranium oil Has astringent properties and can calm inflammation due to oily skin and acne
Healthy Snack
No-Bake Banana “Cupcakes” Everyone loves cupcakes and our version is easy to do and delicious! Slice firm bananas into 1-inch slices, then top with a swirl of peanut or almond butter, a sprinkling of your favorite topping, (we like shredded coconut), but you can use cinnamon sugar, granola or crushed cereal. Top with raisins or fresh berries and enjoy!
Ginger Known for its relief of nausea, especially morning sickness in pregnant women. It’s powerful digestive properties are one of the reasons it’s served with sushi. Orange Oil A dose of Vitamin C can be used to brighten up dull skin and as an exfoliant on calluses . Peppermint Oil Freshens your breath and can be used as a decongestant, headache remedy and muscle rub. Pine Oil Antibacterial and antiseptic properties used to treat skin conditions like eczema, acne and psoriasis. It has also been used to ease the pain associated with arthritis. Sandalwood Soothe a sore throat by adding a few drops to a glass of water and gargle twice a day. Use as a moisturizer after shaving and for dry skin. Sesame Oil Moisturizer for your hair and skin Tea Tree Antiseptic for acne and other skin issues Ylang Ylang Balances the sebum glands and is effective on combination skin

Using an MRI to “See” What Man’s Best Friend Feels What if it were possible to know what a dog feels? Fascinating research made possible by MRI technology has uncovered a partial answer to this baffling question. Since man’s best friend can’t speak to us directly, we must rely on indirect information like barking or tail-wagging, for instance. But do sick or confused dogs show the same behavior? Does a dog that won’t bark or wag its tail still respond when it sees a familiar person? And is it the same thing a dog feels when it sees a familiar dog? Some of these questions have now been answered. Emory University Professor Gregory Berns believed that neuroscience could offer some clues. He reasoned that knowing more about how dogs react neurologically could affect the way we treat them. In a recent article in The New York Times, Berns describes training his dog, and others, to remain still in MRI machines to be scanned for a study. Findings are preliminary – studies are ongoing – but one part of a dog’s brain is already demonstrating a remarkable similarity to a human brain: the caudate nucleus. The caudate nucleus is a part of the human brain whose activity can, with some consistency, predict a person’s preference for food or music. So it was with dogs in the study: their caudate nuclei responded to “hand signals indicating food,” the odor of familiar humans, and perhaps the return of an owner who had just disappeared from view. A remarkable aspect of the research is that dogs are trained to remain completely still inside the MRI unit. Berns notes that vets usually anesthetize dogs for scans like this, but an anesthetized dog would not be able to display emotional reactions. The ability of dogs in the study to remain motionless when requested, made possible by positive training by investigators, allowed the MRI scanner to capture images of brain activity, and thus, to study dogs’ reactions to stimuli. The team was able to train 12 dogs to obtain MRI scans in this way. It turns out that dogs are like us in ways that we could never have “seen.” Perhaps one day Berns’ team will be able to know when dogs are impatient, worried or just wanting a little more attention.
Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology is the leading Long Island provider of diagnostic imaging, including MRI scanning, using the most advanced 3T Wide-Bore MRI (Siemens Skyra) units on the market today.

FAMILY Adoption Spotlight
START A FAMILY TRADITION The Christmas tree, used as a symbol of life, is a tradition more than 1,000 years old and not exclusive to any one religion. In America, the lights and ornaments have evolved into a collection of family memories that are relived every year as the ornaments are unwrapped and placed on the tree. Choosing a real tree gives the family a chance to be outdoors and find the perfect tree together. Here is a list of some local tree farms where you can select your tree plus be entertained with traditional holiday fun like caroling and sipping hot chocolate.
You don’t have to travel far to cut your own tree, here is a list of Christmas tree farms on Long Island Nassau County Olsen Hill Farm, Carle Place Suffolk County Baiting Hollow Nursery, Calverton Carter Tree Farm, Miller lace Muller’s Tree Farm, Manorville Pau’s Lawn & Landscaping, Cutchogue Santa’s Christmas Tree Farm, Cutchogue Shamrock Christmas Tree Farm, Mattituck Tilden Lane Farm, Greenlawn Zuhoski Farms, Cutchogue
You won’t need a cashmere sweater to snuggle with this winter, not after you meet Cashmere, a spayed, tigerstriped terrier, who is less than 2 years old. Cashmere is a very sweet young lady that was rescued by Little Shelter from one of those scary city shelters. Won’t you give her a chance at a brighter future? Cashmere would love to live in a warm loving home with a forever family. Cashmere is okay with kids over 12 years old, cats and some dogs. If you’d like to meet Cashmere and other adorable adoptables, visit LittleShelter.com
Christmas Safety Poem By Gord Taylor
On the night before Christmas you and your spouse, Should check all the plugs and light cords through the house. Make the stockings that hang on the bricks by the fire, Safe from combustion before you retire. Inspect that old furnace that warms up your hide, For deadly leaks of carbon monoxide. Look in on your children, nestled snug in their beds, And check all the smoke detectors, fastened over their heads. These few safety items I ask you to remember, For a safe holiday season, this end of December.
Easy Advent Calendar Count down to Christmas with an Advent Calendar you can create with your children. Supplies: Mini muffin pan (for 24 muffins) 2” round stickers or construction paper and double-sided tape 24 pieces of candy 2 pieces of construction paper cut into 24 strips total (about ½” x 8.5”) Directions: Decorate the stickers or construction paper with holiday motif and number them 1 through 24. Have your child write a good deed or activity (Give mom a hug, etc.) on the construction paper and roll up and place in each recess with a piece of candy. Place each sticker or round piece of paper with tape over each hole (that also has a good deed). Starting on December 1st, your child can reveal a treat and a good deed to fulfill. As each deed is completed, staple or tape the strip of paper into a loop and create a chain of good deeds to hang on the Christmas tree or mantle on Christmas Day.

a few of our favorite CLassic Holiday Movies
Jon Chim
Production Artist Elf (2003)
Sara Anne Fingerman
“We elves try to stick to the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup.”—Buddy. I enjoy watching this movie with my family during the Holidays. Will Farrell, as Elf, is filled with fun and laughs all around. Trust me, this movie will be your all-time holiday favorite.
Courtney Wray Account Executive To Grandmother’s House we go (1992)
Lifestyle Editor The Holiday (2006)
This movie has an all-star cast including Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law and Jack Black. The premise of this chick flick: Two women who are unlucky in love swap homes at Christmas time. They each serendipitously meet the man of their dreams and fall in love. Not only is this movie romantic, it’s set in my favorite places to travel, Los Angeles and London. It’s a must-see for anyone who enjoys a holiday story coupled by a twist of fate and love.
Beverly Fortune
You can’t get much better than a cheesy made-for-TV movie with the Olsen twins. Two sisters feel like their mother is tired of them, so they run away from home to find their grandmother. On the way they have many adventures. You can’t help but fall in love with them. This is a fun holiday classic, pure genius.
Publisher March of the Wooden Soldiers/ Babes in Toyland (1934)
Jaime Franchi
staff writer When Harry Met Sally (1989)
Lissa Harris
The calendar cannot change until I’ve sat with my best girlfriends to watch our favorite film. “When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with someone, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” And when I realize that the year is drawing to a close, and the cold weather is here, a bottle of wine and my friends Harry and Sally make for the perfect end of the year.
Usher in the season with this holiday classic on WPIX/Channel 11 at 9 a.m. Thanksgiving Morning. Starring Laurel and Hardy, there is no better way to introduce the next generation to their comic genius. Nursery rhymes come to life, Santa Claus and, of course, the famous wooden soldiers make this a not-tobe-missed movie.
Account Executive National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)
This movie sums up all that I love and hate about the holidays. The joy and annoyance of family, the neverending search for that “perfect” gift, and of course being the brightest house on the block! The Griswold family shines even with their imperfections, reminding us of the true spirit of Christmas.
