This juice is the real deal and offers higher nutritional levels. The MJF will even deliver your juice (via skateboard) to your beach blanket. There is no doubt that the East End of Long Island is one of the country’s most exciting areas to visit in the summer when celebrity sightings abound. The sara@milieuli.com world-class restaurants and award-winning beaches attract thousands of people who trek to the Hamptons, Montauk and the vineyards, clogging arteries on both forks. Farther west on the Island communities are thriving with Long Islanders spending their time and money locally and loving every minute of it. They frequent neighborhood lounges and beach bars and microbreweries, enjoying top-notch entertainment all within close proximity to their homes. Whether by the ocean, the bay or the Sound, there are restaurants and shops that rival both the Hamptons and Manhattan. Savvy Long Islanders are experiencing the best that our vibrant downtowns have to offer. We thought it would be fun to visit four Long Island “hot spots” where the summer comes alive.

Huntington is a cultural mecca. The Cinema Arts Centre, Huntington Summer Arts Festival and Heckscher Museum of Art complement the newest venue on the block, The Paramount. It’s also home to some of the best restaurants on Long Island. There is always a line for a slice of pizza with a handful of “cold cheese” at Little Vincent’s, quite arguably the Best Pizza on Long Island. Those who used to travel to New York City to have their hair done now reside only a few miles from top-rated salons like Spa Adriana and Tres Jolie. Boutiques like OohLaLa and Lotus Vintage are always popular and larger stores like Fox’s and Marsh’s reside in harmony with the independents. There’s enough business in the “Little Apple” for everyone. Laura Petrocelli, our model, is a lifelong resident of Huntington. If you’re a networker, socialite or philanthropist on Long Island, you’ve probably met her. She’s been the event-and-marketing coordinator for Ferrari-Maserati of Long Island and the co-founder of Huntington-based Couture Concepts, a high-end event design and bridesmaid couture boutique. Laura’s expertise in marketing and events is intrinsic. “I always made my clients feel important,” she says. “When my territory became number one in the Northeast, the managers wanted to know how I did it. “I thought about my technique, which to me was just a natural instinct, and said, ‘I thought outside of the donut box.’ They loved that and almost 10 years later, I have been told that they still use that quote in their quarterly company meetings.” She used the same event planning concept for the Experience

Auto Group. “I learned that I don’t have to stick to test-drive events and road rallies just because it’s an automotive dealer group event. I still ‘think outside the donut box.’” She’s planned Made in Italy events, Gentlemen’s Nights Out and shooting events at the Morrelly Homeland Security Training Center in Bethpage. “I brought my years of wedding and event planning experience to the table and changed the way they looked at that department,” Laura says. “My goal was to bring new and qualified faces through the door and make them fall in love with the idea of owning a Ferrari or Maserati. No one needs a $350,000 exotic car. It’s an emotional purchase. We are selling an experience, a dream and the lifestyle that comes along with it.” Laura gave us the inside scoop on her favorite Huntington shopping destinations: Rexer-Parkes, My Inheritance Vintage Boutique and OohLaLa Boutique. If she needs to wind down, she heads over to Prime for drinks while enjoying the view of Huntington Harbor, or Swallow on Main Street for tapas and cocktails. She loves Restaurant Joanina on Gerard Avenue for its great Italian food and wine. Huntington Village thrives after dark. The Paramount has been a game changer, drawing huge crowds for its live performances ranging from Joan Rivers to Trace Adkins and The Cult. The Huntington Arts Council’s summer calendar is jam-packed with great events, too. Live entertainment, parks, beaches, boating, shopping and the vibrancy of a hip urban area among tree-lined streets are why Huntington is one of the crown jewels of Long Island.

Known to locals as “Down Port,” Port Jefferson is a vibrant waterfront village that boasts unique shops and boutiques, cafes and restaurants offering everything from local seafood to French cuisine. Have a burger at Grumpy Jack’s or dine overlooking the harbor at the elegant Danfords on the Sound. A favorite weekend destination for thousands of Long Islanders is The Frigate, an iconic ice cream and candy shop, which has an inventory of sweets that rivals Disney World. On Main Street is the Harbor Square Mall, filled with small boutiques, particularly Sea Creations which specializes in seashell jewelry and starfish pendants. During the summer, when hundreds of yachts and sailboats line up neatly in the marina, Port Jefferson comes alive with their Harborside Concert Series, music in the park, farmers’ market and picnic supper concerts. Local establishments often feature live music and dancing. If you want to get away for a change, you can hop on the Bridgeport-Port Jefferson Ferry and enjoy a scenic ride to Connecticut and points north. Our Port Jefferson model, Katie Poma, is the co-owner of the Secret Garden Tea Café on Main Street. She grew up visiting tea houses across the country with her mother, Carol. They wanted to operate their own tea establishment, and in 2011 they opened their shop in the heart of Port Jefferson. Carol works in the back of the house preparing delicious fare from finger sandwiches to petit fours while Katie oversees the front of the house, serving as hostess and managing the gift shop. “We enjoy working together,” Katie says. “We have similar personalities and creativeness.” Katie is known in the community for her elegant style. Locals will often walk by and peek inside the shop window to see what dress or fascinating hat Katie is wearing. She shops in boutiques like Earring Tabu and has been deemed Port Jefferson’s very own “Fashion-Tea-Sta.” Entering the tea shop is like walking into an English garden. Flowers are everywhere, and butterflies float in the air. The space is filled with unique gifts especially for those who love lace and bows. Of course, tea remains one of their best sellers.

“The Secret Garden was named after the book written by Francis Hodgson Burnett,” Katie explains. The novel is a classic in English literature. The garden motif exudes the same aura that transformed Mary Lennox, the fictitious lead character, from being self-centered to a version of Miss Congeniality. Besides choosing from an extensive menu of teas, delicious salads and sandwiches, guests can dress up in hats, boas and pearls during high tea to remind them of their carefree childhood years. “Now, more than ever, people have so many hardships they are dealing with,” Katie says, “we make them feel as if they are cut off from the outside world, to be happy and not think of all the negatives.” At each table setting a beautiful rose is accompanied by a card with an inspirational quote. When her mother first suggested this idea, Katie thought it was a little silly, but now she realizes how pleasant an impact it’s had on her guests. “It is our hope when people visit the garden, they will emerge more relaxed and able to face the world rejuvenated,” Katie says. “We wanted to create a place where people could escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, a place where you could sit down to tea with your mother and friends.”

“Discipline is living in service of your vision.”

Never leave your teabag or loose tea leaves in the teapot. Most teas have a steep time of 5 minutes; anything longer will taste bitter. It’s a faux pas to hold up your pinky while sipping tea. Green tea should be steeped in water at 175 degrees, not in boiled water. Green, black and white teas all come from the same plant. It’s the oxidation and fermentation process that distinguishes them. Most of the tea we drink comes from India.

The Village of Patchogue began its renaissance almost 20 years ago, turning the downtown from blight to beautiful. Filled with crowded restaurants, trendy shops and hundreds of new homes, Patchogue is the poster village for “smart growth” on Long Island. It’s known for hosting live music, the arts and craft beer. Thanks to the revitalization effort, it’s become a pretty exciting place to visit as well as inhabit. Artspace Patchogue is a special residential complex that provides area artists with a place to live, create and promote their art. Our model, Jennifer Jeran, is an artist and resident of Artspace. “My mother had been aware of the plans for Artspace for several years,” Jennifer says. “She would occasionally remind me of it when I would talk to her about the dismal housing options within my price range on Long Island She saw it as an opportunity for me to not only be independent, but do so in a community where I would have complete access to the arts. She was absolutely right.” Jennifer applied when Artspace held a lottery for a limited number of lofts in 2010 and her number was selected. Several interviews and questionnaires later she made the cut. And in February 2011, Jennifer was one of the first people to move in. “It was a brand new building and a new start, and definitely a pivotal moment in my life,” she says. “Having my work displayed and self-identifying as an artist is a big thing for me.” “Along Main Street you can find Thai, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Peruvian and American restaurants, a theatre, music venues and bars, bowling alleys, gyms, salons, gallery spaces, spa services, an organic market. I even have an art house cinema next door. The LIRR is around the corner, and the bay is just south. There’s just about everything one could possibly need, and all within walking distance.” Patchogue’s Alive After Five summer street fairs are hugely popular. This summer they will feature live music and entertainment on six stages, food trucks, shopping and children’s activities. The renovated Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts has attracted an array of top-rated entertainment. A heartbeat away is The Emporium, a concert venue that features many local bands. The Great South Bay Music Festival promises an impressive offering with BB King, Taking Back Sunday and The Fabulous Thunderbirds scheduled to perform this summer as well. Jennifer is happy with her decision to say on LI and says, “Living in Patchogue is an amazing experience.”

The new Long Beach Boardwalk looks as smooth as the sugar white sand that lines the shore. Rebuilt with metal supports to withstand the next hurricane, it seems to turn gold as the sun sets, making it so much more beautiful than the dull wood that preceded it. Like the new boardwalk, you can sense how strong Long Beach has become since Sandy, making it a contender for summer fun. Our model, Ingrid Krumholz Dodd, also exudes that strength. She’s lived in Long Beach for almost 15 years with her husband, Randy, and their two children. Before the storm hit, Ingrid met Craig Weintraub, a Long Island filmmaker, who was scouting for film locations when he stopped at the Allegria Hotel, where Ingrid worked. It turned out they had mutual friends and shared an enthusiasm and love of film. After weeks of meetings, they were sitting on the rooftop of the

Allegria, which overlooks the ocean, and wondered why no one had produced a film festival in Long Beach before. They agreed to be partners. “In 2011 our dream became a reality,” Ingrid says. Then Sandy slammed Long Beach. “My family was displaced, our cars were gone, our house was damaged,” Ingrid says. “We were all in survival mode for months.” Their film festival planning also took a hit. “How on earth was I going to ask anyone to sponsor this festival when the locals didn’t even have homes?” she says. Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano saw the efforts they were putting into keeping the festival alive. “He encouraged us to apply for a travel tourism grant,” Ingrid says. “Without it, we would have never come this far so soon.”

With the community rallying around them, the festival was kept alive. “At that moment we knew we couldn’t cancel. People were too sad. We needed to brighten their spirits. The show must go on.” “Tribeca was created after 9/11 to revitalize the area, we can do the same,” she says. Last year, the Long Beach Film Festival had more than 3,000 attendees. They expect more this year. Celebrity supporters include Scott Franklin, Joan Jett, Dee Snider and Burt Young. This year’s festival runs from July 30th through August 4th. Long Beach will be transformed from a beach community to Hollywood East, giving credence to Ingrid’s query: “Why Not Long Island? Why Not Long Beach?”

Bailey Ginsberg in Amagansett

Bailey’s Bridge connecting science to the Afterlife By Beverly Fortune beverly@MilieuLI.com

Phran Ginsberg of Lloyd Harbor had

a restless night’s sleep and woke up on September 2, 2002 with a bad feeling. “I’ve had premonitions in the past, but they were always good, never bad,” she recalls. She told her husband Bob about her unease, and though they had a busy day ahead, they agreed to be extra careful. Their eldest son, Jon, was leaving to study at the University of Delaware, just the week before their middle child, Kori, began studies at Carnegie Mellon University. Their youngest daughter, Bailey, 15, went to her job at Value Drugs in Huntington. At the end of the day the family decided to meet in Huntington for dinner. At the restaurant, Bailey was seated next to Phran. She leaned over and showed Phran her palm and said, “I have a short lifeline.” Those words would have a profound effect on the Ginsbergs. After dinner, Jon and Bailey left together in one car, Bob and Phran made a quick stop at Dairy Barn. They wanted to make sure that Bailey had milk while they were out of town taking Jon to college. “We were about two minutes behind them,” Phran recalls. Jon and Bailey never made it home that night; they were in a horrible accident. Jon was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with a severe head injury and Bailey was rushed to Huntington Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

Jon remained in a coma for three days. The Ginsbergs’ lives centered around his recovery. He was released a month later to an outpatient rehab. Bob and Phran would take turns driving him to and from his therapy so he could be home at night with the family. As Jon’s condition improved, Phran and Bob began the arduous journey of grieving for their daughter. They began looking for a Compassionate Friends group meeting to find other parents who could understand the devastation of losing a child. “We kept missing the meetings,” she says, but then Bob called with the news that he found a meeting that evening in Babylon—a long drive, but they didn’t want to miss this one. It was October 4, 2002. Phran recalls having a particularly difficult time that day. Nine years earlier, in 1993, Phran was the PTA president at the Sunquam Elementary School in Melville. On March 14 of that year, 9-year-old Deanna Moon tried to slip through the motorized partition of a gym wall as Phran and Bob Ginsberg

it closed. She got caught and was crushed by the massive wall and died of her injuries nine days later. Phran says that for some reason she couldn’t get Deanna out of her mind that day. “I was obsessed,” she recalls. On the way to the Compassionate Friends meeting, Phran told Bob about Deanna. When they arrived, they found seats and listened to other heartbroken parents tell stories about their children, all gone too soon. Peggy Moon—Deanna’s mother—was sitting behind Phran. They hadn’t seen each other in years. Phran told Peggy she had been thinking about Deanna all day. “It’s Deanna’s 21st birthday today,” Peggy replied. “It was like the universe was conspiring to bring us together,” Phran says. Signs of Bailey continually appeared. Phran drank in every nuance and message; Bob remained skeptical that his daughter was reaching out to them from the “other side.” A few weeks after Bailey passed away, Cold Spring Harbor High School held a memorial observance in her memory. Bailey’s English teacher was cleaning out his office that day when an unmarked CD fell out of the cabinet. There was only one item on the disc: a poem by Bailey called “The Wonder Awaits.” She wrote the poem about what awaits you when you die when she was 12 years old. “Bailey wanted to be a writer,” Phran says. The Ginsbergs established two scholarships in her name, for school spirit and love of writing. In what could be called a divine intervention, Jon’s doctors wanted to meet with the Ginsbergs about his treatment, and since they arrived very early for the appointment, they went into Barnes and Noble Bookstore. As they perused the aisles, a new book was being put on display called The Afterlife Experiments, by Dr. Gary Schwartz. Coincidentally, in September 2002, the same month as Bailey’s death, Schwartz received a $1.8 million dollar award from the National Center on Complementary and Alternative Medicine of the National Institutes of Health to create a Center for Frontier Medicine in Biofield Science at the University of Arizona. In his book, Schwartz chronicled a series of experiments he conducted with well-known mediums to prove or disprove the existence of an afterlife. Bob was electrified by the news. “My husband had to meet Dr. Schwartz,” Phran says. After numerous emails to Dr. Schwartz, on Valentine’s Day 2003 the doctor replied and invited Phran and Bob to the University of Arizona. The Ginsbergs were being offered a chance to prove that Bailey was trying to reach them from the other side. Both Phran and Bob agreed they wanted to try something out of the ordinary. They were looking for a different kind of proof. Usually, a medium reports what has happened in the past. The Ginsbergs thought, “What if the medium can tell us what Bailey is going to do in the future?” In Arizona they met with a research medium trained in protocol as a scientist. The medium told them, “You have a sound system in your bedroom and Bailey’s going to make a very loud noise.” “It didn’t make a lot of sense to us,” Phran says of the prediction. She sounded almost disappointed. A week after returning home from Arizona, on August 14, 50 million people were plunged into darkness in the Northeast Blackout of 2003. Long Island was completely in the dark. “There was no electricity and it was sweltering,” Phran recalls of the summer heat. “We were sound asleep and then there was a loud noise. The house shook so hard we thought an airplane had crashed into it.” On the bedroom wall was one of Bailey’s favorite pictures, a Salvatore Dali lithograph, named “Lincoln in Dalivision.” Phran

36 MILIEU Exclusively for Long Island Women

milieuli.com

estimates the picture as being 2 ft. by 3 ft. “If you stood far away, it looked like Abraham Lincoln, up close it was Dali’s naked wife,” says Phran. “It was a picture that Bailey loved.” The force of the noise made the picture flip over, sweep everything off of the stereo cabinet and land on the floor, upright. Everything on the cabinet was shattered and strewn across the floor, except for Bailey’s picture. “It was the only thing that was still standing,” Phran says. Bob still remained a skeptic, always looking for more information through books, lectures, anything he could find about the afterlife. Dr. Schwartz and the Ginsbergs spent a lot of time together. He proposed an idea that was so original and unique there is still no other organization like it. The Ginsbergs and Schwartz formed the nonprofit Forever Family Foundation in 2004 as a resource where people could obtain scientific evidence of the afterlife and further the understanding of Afterlife Science through research and education, while providing support and healing for people in grief. “We find that bereaved people get relief knowing they are going 1st Mediums to be Certified by the to see their loved one Forever Family Foundation from top: Bobbi Allison again,” explains Phran. Theresa Caputo “The culture in the Kim Russo U.S. tells you to detach Laura Lynn Jackson after death. That’s where people’s grief can get so out of hand.” The foundation created a Medium Certification Program as a science-based examination of the ability of a specific medium to give information without the use of fraudulent or deceptive means. Each medium is exposed to a variety of sitters and a scoring system that determines the accuracy of the information given by each medium. The sitter selection is controlled to ensure that none of the mediums have any prior access to the sitter or any information about them. Continued on page 38

“It’s not a test, it’s an evaluation,” Phran explains. “We do not offer mediumship training or development.” The first group to be certified by the foundation in 2005 reads like a Who’s Who of Long Island mediums, including the nowfamous “Long Island Medium” Theresa Caputo, Kim Russo, Bobbi Allison and Laura Lynn Jackson. The foundation also helps protect the bereaved against fraud and provides a resource for the bereaved, and is not used as a validation for a medium who is seeking accreditation for their ability. “I feel an obligation to tell people about reality shows,” says Phran. “It seems everyone is hanging up a shingle. Reality shows are not real.” It seems that Long Island has an unusually large psychic population, and Phran agrees. “Scientifically there is no evidence, but Long Island is surrounded by water. Water is energy, so it makes sense,” she says. Phran says she receives about 20 inquiries a week from mediums about certification, but once they receive the information about the process, she says, “Maybe one will send back the completed application.” Now with the use of Skype, it’s easier for the Forever Foundation to reach mediums around the world. “Before, they had to be willing to travel to New York. For some, it took years,” she says. The Forever Family Foundation is interested in scientific evidence that supports the premise that we are much more than our physical bodies and do indeed survive physical death. Although such evidence remains unknown to the majority of the population, it is compelling and plentiful. “We collect data to draw conclusions based on science and use scientists on our board,” she says. Although modern science hasn’t proven how the process works, it is clear that there must be a match between the medium, the sitter and the entity. Even the most gifted mediums acknowledge that the connection isn’t always made. There are no guarantees in life, as in death. The board of directors of the Forever Family Foundation is as unusual as its mission. The hierarchy consists of a board of directors and advisory boards comprised of scientists, mediums, academics, and an auxiliary board of deceased people. “The medium advisory board communicates with the deceased board members about the direction of the foundation,” Phran explains. The foundation also offers conferences, events and afterlife discussion groups. Every Thursday evening from 8 to 9 p.m. the Ginsbergs host a radio show, “Signs of Life,” on BBS Radio. They interview scientists, researchers, mediums, paranormal investigators and authors about different topics, including near-death experiences, deathbed visions, reincarnation, apparitions, mediumship, telepathy, healing, grief, physics and the afterlife. Phran says that the groups help some people work through their grief and many describe finding a new spirituality and understanding of the universe and their relationship to it after attending. They boast 8,000 members; another 2,000 follow but aren’t officially associated with the foundation. Bob is still a healthy skeptic but now gets dream visits from Bailey, which Phran says he relishes. The Ginsbergs have put their hearts and souls into the foundation and Phran says with absolute certainty, “I’m convinced that Bailey set this up from the other side.”

A connection with BailEy After I interviewed Phran, I went back to my office to transcribe my crazy shorthand for the article. After that, I began to research my notes on the Internet. I googled Dr. Schwartz, the Forever Family Foundation, Deanna Moon and then found BaileyGinsberg.com. I cut and pasted the home page into my document and continued with my research. When I was finished, I printed the entire document to take home with me. As I leafed through the copies, I couldn’t believe my eyes, my mind and my heart. Every font on the home page of BaileyGinsberg.com had defaulted. There were only capital letters that read like a search-a-word puzzle. MOM MOM MOM. Over and over. There isn’t a single capital M or O on the home page. I called Phran to tell her what happened. You could feel her smile over the phone. “It’s Bailey reaching out,” she said. I emailed a scan of the document to her and the Ginsberg’s discussed the anomaly on their Signs of Life radio show that evening. I carry the page with me and look at it every so often and think of how Phran is right, Bailey is reaching out from the other side. Beverly

Many people suffer from a condition called Onychomycosis (on-ni-koh-my-ko-sis), which is better known as toenail fungus. This condition is noticeable by a thickened, yellow or cloudy appearance of an individual’s toenail plate. The toenail can become rough and crumbly or can separate from the nail bed. There is usually no pain or other bodily symptoms unless the disease is severe. The condition can often affect a person’s ability to enjoy the simple things in life such as going barefoot or wearing sandals. Is there hope for sufferers of this condition? Cherrywood Foot Care in Nassau County has just introduced a medical breakthrough by offering the newest in laser technology for toenail fungus: the Cool Breeze Laser. Cherrywood Foot Care, led by founder Dr. Joseph Burke, has been a part of the Long Island community for over 24 years. They offer quality medical and surgical foot care. The facility features cuttingedge emerging technologies such as a diagnostic ultrasound and a state-ofthe-art operating room on premise and this new laser treatment for toenail fungus. Dr. Burke and his qualified staff have the most advanced training and use the most advanced techniques in the treatment of this condition and your entire foot and ankle healthcare. Cherrywood Foot Care and Dr. Burke are leading the industry with this revolutionary treatment that quite simply can eliminate toenail fungus. The laser treatment destroys pathogens that cause toenail fungus. This is a serious and powerful medical advancement that the public needs to learn more about. This revolutionary new laser treatment appears more effective than all previous treatment options. Laser therapy for toenail fungus is completely safe, painless and has no side effects. In most cases, usually only one treatment is needed. This treatment leaves patients with a significant improvement in the health and appearance of their toenails. kills the embedded pathogens in the nail plate and nail bed, leaving normal healthy tissue undamaged. Only minimal adverse reactions, injuries, disabilities or side effects have been reported in clinical studies with this new laser technology and treatment. In contrast, topical treatments are minimally effective. “Oral medications available today can cause side effects to the liver, kidney and eyes, and may even affect your senses of taste and smell,” states Dr. Burke. At the time of the procedure, the toenail will not become instantly clear, it takes time to grow out. A new healthy nail will be seen emerging from the cuticle area as the nails grow naturally. The average toenail replaces itself every six to nine months. Within one to three months of the procedure, a healthy new growth will be visible. The laser treatment is very effective, according to clinical studies performed in Sacramento, Calif. Most patients experience significant improvement. In most cases, the fungal nails are improved with a single treatment. The vast majority of our clients require only one treatment, which usually takes about 30 minutes. No anesthetic or injections are ever used and you will be able to resume all of your normal activities immediately after the treatment is done. It is recommended that after the treatment (just like you practice good oral hygiene to keep your teeth and gums healthy), you will need to practice good foot hygiene to keep your toenails healthy. Find out how to end your struggle with toenail fungus by visiting Cherrywoodfootcare.com or call Dr. Joseph Burke for a free consultation. Their professional medical staff will help you to feel welcome, relaxed and comfortable with a caring office experience. Cherrywood Foot Care can have you barefoot and smiling with confidence once again with this revolutionary new laser technology. It can eliminate unsightly toenail fungus giving you clear healthy toenails with an affordable one-time treatment! Reclaiming the Dress By Jaime Franchi

jfranchi@moreypublishing.com

Once upon a time I had a job I hated. In that job, I was known as “the girl who cries at work.” (You know her; every office has one.) I had been hired above my knowledge grade and didn’t have a mentor to help me get up to speed. I floundered. I failed. I was frustrated and ashamed. But I tried like hell. A few months into this job, after the company lost a big account, I was instructed to handle another. I did some preliminary work, and went about researching and building a relationship with the client through phone calls and emails. My boss set up a meeting to present a sales proposal to them. It was a breakfast meeting, the first of my career. The Friday before that meeting, the Chairman of the Board walked over to my cubicle. After some casual chitchat, he said to me, “You have a big day coming up on Monday!” I hadn’t really considered the breakfast meeting a “big day.” But now I did. It became the day I would sit at a big conference table with my boss and woo these clients with the brilliant proposal that I’d been working on. It was the day I would redeem myself. That weekend I bought myself a new dress for my “big day.” A Banana Republic shift dress in sensible gray, it communicated sophisticated professionalism. It set me back about half my paycheck, but I considered it an investment in my career. And though I didn’t contribute much at the breakfast meeting, I sure looked good. Yet by lunchtime, I was unemployed. It turned out that the clients hadn’t really been mine and the transition to another account rep had already been set up the week before. My part in the meeting was superficial. It was a way to connect the clients I’d made inroads with with the head of the company. Afterwards, my boss took me out to a Thai restaurant for lunch and, between bites of noodles, fired me. You can bet I cried the whole drive home. I didn’t cry for the loss of the job. It was more personal than that. I felt like a failure. I felt rejected, as if the company I worked for had just broken up with me. Although I felt some relief to be free from a job that had never suited me, I couldn’t get over that

deeper loss. The disconnect from what I thought I would be able to accomplish, the learning curve I believed I could overcome, and the reality that, from the company’s perspective, I wasn’t worth the investment. It took me much longer than the timespan of my actual employment to get over it. In fact, it still smarts. It reminds me that I have limits. I don’t like that feeling. The smart gray shift hung in my closet for two years, unworn. It was a reminder of dashed high hopes. It symbolized the disparity of who I thought I could be and who I actually was: a mom who been out of the job market for 10 years, yet full of verve that I could jump back in and rock it on pure will and nerve. It was a testament to my failure. Until this April. On a rain-heavy morning in Saratoga Springs, Jaime, happy I found myself two years in her new job. older and employed again, Follow her working at my dream job on twitter as a writer at an award-win@jaimimimama. ning newspaper and magazine, a place where I feel respected, encouraged and valued. More importantly, I didn’t identify myself as the girl who cried at work. Our team of writers was in Saratoga to attend the New York Press Association awards. The dress code was business casual. I had just the thing. Walking up to the dais to receive my wrapped in dry-cleaning plastic, no longer a award in my gray Banana Republic shift testament to my shortcomings or failures, dress, I felt both validated and vindicated. I but as a trophy for my trying, risking and felt that the person I am – a mom, yes, but daring to find a job where I could flourish an award-winning mom, thank you very instead of flounder. much–finally matched my outward persona. I reclaimed the dress. Now it means The dress hangs in my closet, once again success.

The Gray Divorce After the children are gone, more and more empty nesters are taking a look at their marriage and realizing that there’s nothing left in the marriage that’s worth saving. Once the children are gone the “silence” can be deafening. There’s no one there to distract you from the fact that you and your partner have grown apart over the years; that you no longer can agree on anything; that you’re constantly blaming one another for everything that’s wrong with your life. Let’s face it, children form a buffer in a marriage. Women tend to overlook, dismiss and downplay their partner’s shortcomings because they can focus on their children’s lives. Once the children have gotten married or gone off to college everything that’s wrong with your relationship becomes magnified and everything your partner does is annoying. Some women find that the glue that was holding the marriage together was the children; and once they are gone you have nothing to talk about and when you do talk it becomes an argument. Sociologists Susan Brown and I-Fen Lin

of Bowling Green State University have researched “The Gray Divorce Revolution” and drawing data from the 1990 U.S. Vital Statistics Report and the 2009 American Community Survey, administered by the U.S. Census Bureau have indicated that the divorce rate among people ages 50 and older has doubled over the past two decades. Today, women can often live 10, 20, and sometimes 30 years beyond that of their own mothers. In many cases, the over 50 “baby boomers” are examining their lives and looking forward to decades more of a healthy life; they are deciding that they’ve done their parental duty and now want to fulfill their own dreams. No longer do couples stay together out of habit or because of their vow “until death do us part.” Some of those marriages now end in divorce. If you, your mother or a friend find yourselves in a stagnant or unhappy marriage you need to consider what’s keeping you in the marriage and what would happen if you decided to file for divorce. There are many financial issues to consider when

you’re divorcing after a long term marriage. Your spouse may be retired and collecting social security and a pension or you may be living off income from an annuity or your investments. How will these issues affect you if you decide to divorce? What happens to the home where you raised your family? What will your financial situation be like? Will you be able to get support from your spouse? Will you receive child support for your children or are they too old? In order to make an intelligent decision about divorce you need to have all the facts. As an experienced divorce attorney, I’m interested in discussing your options and helping you make an informed decision when it comes time to file for divorce. If you have questions or just want more information about the divorce process, I will be holding an informal seminar where you can get the information you need. It will be held from 6 pm on July 22, 2014 at Sara Beth’s Restaurant located in the Lord & Taylor store in Manhasset, New York.

Darryl Davis

President, Darryl Davis Seminars

A Life Worth Smiling About By Jaime Franchi

Up a steep driveway in Wading River is a house that is as opulent as it is welcoming. Some of the contents would feel equally at home in a museum—the acting book atop a grand piano that Marlon Brando dedicated to Michael Jackson, the authentic costumes from the original Star Trek, and a plank from the USS Missouri where the treaty to end WWII was signed—yet they are simply the things that Darryl Davis lives among. His interests—acting, science fiction and history—are reflected in what he surrounds himself with. Science fiction, in particular, represents to him the idea of unlimited possibilities, something that speaks to the philosophy that rules his life and inspired his new book, How to Design a Life Worth Smiling About. “I run a seminar that’s the same title of my book,” Davis tells Milieu. “I talk about goal setting and how most of us look at what we don’t have in our lives and say, ‘I want this.’ I try to tell people, ‘What if you came from a place where it already existed, just not in reality yet? It’s there—you just have to help facilitate it into reality.’ ” Davis—actor, entrepreneur, comedian, power agent, best-selling author, motivational speaker and collector—embodies the true definition of a “self-made” man. Emancipated as a minor after the loss of his father, Davis muddled through in survival mode. “I was 16, working three jobs to pay my rent, still in high school, and I had no parents,” he recalls. And so he began working at a manic pace, accruing tokens of success, until the day he paused to look around. To take a breath and look inside. Within himself, he saw anger and vast unhappiness. “I was angry because of my father,” Davis says. “I was in the people business, but I didn’t like people.” He knew that he was the only one who could change himself.

52 MILIEU Exclusively for Long Island Women

“So I started to really look at what that’s about,” he says. “I wanted to answer the question: who are you? And to look at my relationships.” Around this time his real estate career began to take off. He’d had a talent for inspiring others. But then he started looking at the bigger picture beyond the buying and selling of homes, and he saw his clients in a new way. “It’s never about the money,” he reveals. “It’s always about what’s going on in their lives. When you really think about it, it’s life transforming to sell a house. So what we do is to actually help transform people’s lives.” Davis turned this insight into in-depth courses that taught people how to have not only lucrative careers, but happier and more fulfilling lives. His experience inspired him to write his first book, the 2002 best-seller, How to Become a Power Agent in Real Estate. These days Davis radiates positivity seemingly from his very pores, an optimism that has roots in hardship and self-reflection. With an infectious laugh and wide smile, he possesses a sense of humor that is the trademark of his larger than life personality. Enthusiasm touches every aspect of his life, especially in the two things that anchor him: his work and his relationships. Having discovered the secrets to success in real estate, he has made it his life’s work to share that gift. For 20 years, through his yearlong real estate coaching program, his threeday program, S.U.R.E results, his powerful and entertaining seminars, and his mentorships, Davis has touched thousands of lives. From helping clients find their dream home he now wants to help people design their dream lives. “If you smile, it will change how you feel. Absolutely. But if you also create an environment that is a source of more reasons to smile, then you’ll smile too,” he says. “It’s self-

milieuli.com

perpetuating.” His philosophy of designing a life worth smiling about combines modern psychology and an almost Buddhist appreciation for the present moment. It was in his contemplation of the moment that sparked the idea for his latest book, reconciling the pain of his childhood with the realities of his adulthood, where he found himself a single father, raising his young son Michael on his own. Davis treasures the father-son relationship with the added significance of someone who never got to experience it with his own dad—and that’s why it’s so special for him now. “There are things that happen in our childhoods that become defining moments,” Davis says. “So with Michael, I knew that anytime he had those firsts: the first girl he loved, the first girl who breaks up with him, the first time he takes a test, the first time he makes a friend, the first time a friend turns on him—he’s going to make a decision that’s going to be the template of the rest of his life. And so I was always, when he was growing up, looking for those firsts, because I can remember them all as an adult. I would talk to him so he wouldn’t make it mean something that was disempowering.” In owning those firsts and attaching positive meanings to them, his son Michael has found plenty of reasons to smile. In that way, Davis could change the meaning of his own childhood to one where he was neither abandoned nor simply lonely, but on the journey where he was learning all that he needed to become the man he is now. The man who teaches us how to smile. To Contact Darryl E-mail Darryl@DarrylDavis.com If you know a Guy Who “Gets It” and would like to nominate him for a future profile, email Beverly@MilieuLI.com.

College Couture Made Easy With CollegeFashionista.com

B y A manda B arroca

If you’re off to college this fall, it doesn’t matter if you’re commuting to school or living on campus, you want to be up to speed with the new fashion trends at your school. CollegeFashionista.com will keep you on-trend with the latest styles being worn on campuses all over the world. College Fashionista.com is full of fun and insightful tips and trends, making your decision about what to wear on campus or for a night out a lot easier. CollegeFashionista.com founder, Amy Levine, had studied abroad in London and was in her senior year at Indiana State University when she began to blog about the influence of street-style on high-end fashion collections. Her blog turned into something bigger than she ever imagined. She saw how college students are influencers and trendsetters in the fashion world. CollegeFashionista.com took off and came to life! Since the website launched in 2009, more than 600 style gurus highlight favorite fashion trends found on 300 supporting campuses across the globe. The Style Guru’s job is to interview and photograph students on campus who exhibit fashion in a new and intriguing way so they can inspire others to do the same. These students are called CollegeFashionistas. “Most college students dress in sweatpants and Uggs so it’s important to highlight the people who are more mysterious than that,” says Carolyn Marichal, Style Guru for Garden City-based Adelphi University. “Fashion plays a huge role in how a student lives out their day-to-day life and you’d be surprised how many students want to participate on the website,” she adds. “Any girl who can make a statement with their low student budget is worthy of being a College Fashionista!” Fashion is constantly evolving and is slightly different for each and every college. “Adelphi is definitely city streets meets suburbs with a dash of foreign country inspiration all meshed together and it’s great,” Marichal explains. “Most of the Long Island college trends include crop-tops, bright sundresses, sweaters, and patterned pants,” Marichal notes. “The girls tend to be on the preppier side. You might not find the exact same factors being used to describe fashion on the West Coast, but in Texas it can be pretty close. Texas means country and although everyone might not dress like it, it definitely can influence a wardrobe.

They might wear a bright sundress like girls on Long Island except with cowboy boots instead of flats.” As if being a fashionista wasn’t enough, you can also be a CollegeDormista! Imagine living in the coolest dorm room and having it featured online. You can find the most popular décor ideas to give you inspiration for your space, such as a spiced-up dorm with small, inexpensive string lights, a cool poster or a ceramic table topper. Although it is important to keep up with the latest trends, whether it involves your dorm or your wardrobe, you should stay true to your own style. “I was always into trends and wearing what everyone else was wearing but being a Style Guru has taught me to embrace my own style,” said Marichal. “As much as the website is a fashion tool, it is always fun to incorporate your own ideas.” If you’re interested in becoming a Style Guru on your campus, go to CollegeFashionista.com, fill out their questionnaire and submit a mock article. Oh yeah, you should also love fashion, photography, and social media to be a success.Style on!

Here Comes the Sun In 1923, legendary fashion designer Coco Chanel launched a decades-long trend when she “accidentally” developed a tan while on her yacht in the French Riviera. Bronze skin became a beauty phenomena.

by

Today, we know that when laying out in the sun you are actually “cooking” your collagen. Up to 90 percent of visible skin changes attributed to aging are caused by the sun. Your skin begins to wrinkle, discolor, sag and roughen. Doesn’t that thought make you want to slather on sunscreen? Unfortunately, getting some women to wear sunscreen can be a challenge. “It’s hard to change women’s perceptions about having a ‘healthy glow’ or ‘getting some color’ versus looking pale,” says Dr. Deborah Sarnoff, Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology at New York University and Senior Vice President of The Skin Cancer Foundation. “I recommend using a self-tanner that contains DHA (the only FDA-approved sunless tanning ingredient) and looking for one with a tint. When lotion is slightly tinted, it’s easier to see where you’ve put it and you avoid uneven application,” Dr. Sarnoff adds.

on

A recent poll by the research company GFK Roper showed that 58 percent of people are concerned today about skin cancer. Yet only 11 percent of people use an SPF 15 or higher daily.

Cardiac CT Calcium Scoring Are you at risk of a heart attack?

Whether from the sun or an artificial source, ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is a proven human carcinogen.

Do the math:

If you have sunscreen “left over” from last summer you’re not using enough! The proper application is 1 ounce, then another ounce every two hours, so a 4-6 ounce tube should be gone in a weekend!

Consumer Reports recently released a study comparing sunscreen products:

What kind of sunscreen should you use These were Recommended:

TAKE THAT COCO!

More than a million Americans suffer a heart attack each year according to the American Heart Association, and almost half of them are fatal. Calcium builds up in our heart vessels along with plaque from fat in our diet. This can stiffen the vessels and form fissures or cracks that can turn into clots. When clots rupture, they block blood flow triggering a heart attack. We can use drugs to treat the high blood pressure that can cause tension in blood vessels, and statin medications, like Lipitor and Zocor, to lower cholesterol and limit the buildup of plaque. But it’s important to know how much plaque is in your arteries. That’s where a calcium scoring CT scan can be beneficial. Having an accurate idea of your calcium buildup can help your doctor to prescribe the best course of action for a healthy heart. Calcium scoring CT scans are painless and can be completed in about 15 minutes. Because these scans are noninvasive, you can always resume normal activities immediately. Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology only uses lowdose CT scanners. Ask your doctor if a calcium scoring CT scan is right for you.

The nest Glow in the Dark Lawn Bowling

According to a study released this March by the National Fire Protection Agency, of smoke alarms that failed to activate during home fires, 73% had dead, missing or disconnected batteries. Nuisance alarms (chirping) were the leading reason for disconnected smoke alarms.

This is a fun activity for keeping the kids active after dark in their own backyard. Simply fill (6) two-liter bottles with water, snap and insert a glow stick and cap the bottle. Use a soccer or large rubber ball to knock them down!

The Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarm speaks to you in words and colors instead of just beeping. Its sensors include a photoelectric smoke sensor, CO, heat, light, ultrasonic and activity sensors that together analyze smoke and CO levels. Integrated with your mobile devices, the Nest will message you if the batteries run low avoiding the annoying chirp. In an emergency, it speaks to you telling you where the danger is with recommended actions. Before it sounds a piercing alarm, Nest Protect gives you a Heads-Up warning that you can silence with a wave of your hand. If you have more than one Nest, you can connect them wirelessly so you’ll hear alarms from all, even if the danger is in only one room. Nest Protect uses female voice alarms to help wake sleeping children in case of emergency and is available in both English and Spanish. Nest.com

What’s in the Cards Judgment reversed – there is stagnation in a relationship and you may be unable to let go of this person. Don’t be fearful of change and refuse to accept your own power of control in dealing with this important matter. Ignoring your conscience about changes that are needed will only create this stagnation.

Virgo August 23 to September 22

the Page of Cups reversed – you’ve been living in a world of your own and running away from reality. Don’t become reclusive; try to make new friends and get a social life. Sometimes you expect too much from others.

Libra September 23 to October 22

Psychic is a Greek word meaning soul energy. You have the ability to participate consciously in your soul energy. Pathway to Positivity will give you the tools and a safe place to open up your mind and learn about your spiritual nature.

the 10 of Cups reversed – a relationship started now will not be permanent due to discontentment, lack of fulfillment and quarreling. Family and marital disagreements can lead to disobedience and defiance with your children.

Scorpio October 23 to November 21

the 8 of Cups reversed – a new relationship is in store. Enjoy life’s bounty of feasting, family and friends. The eight of cups reversed is the party card so get out there and have a good time.

Meditation

Sagittarius November 22 to December 21

the King of Cups – this card indicates that it is time to get in touch with your own inner feelings. Your significant other will help you become more open and access your inner world.

Meditation is a powerful tool. It not only helps to raise your vibration but it also releases stress and supports the healing process when emotional or physical pain is present. Meditation can be done in many different ways. It doesn’t matter how you Meditate, but you should set time aside every day. If you’re new to Meditation, begin with just 10 to 15 minutes of just “being.” Quiet your mind and allow your Soul to introduce itself to your physical body.

Capricorn December 22 to January 19

Strength – the Strength card means that courage is needed this month to achieve self-mastery. By using will power you are able to overcome obstacles and learn self-control. You have the confidence to cope with the challenge and succeed.

Aquarius January 20 to February 18

the 6 of Pentacles reversed – you may not monetarily receive what is rightfully deserved. Make sure you have agreements in writing and read the fine print. Promises made may have strings attached. Be careful.

Pisces February 19 to March 20

Once the introduction is made, you are on your way to receiving all of the great benefits from practicing Meditation. For instance, the amount of oxygen you bring into your core where all of the energy changes takes place during Meditation, brings Peace, Calm and Balance.

Justice – this card implies that you need to weigh things rationally in order to find a fair solution. You may be given good advice which you need to consider carefully before acting upon it. The outcome may not be what you hoped for but it will be a just one.

Aries March 21 to April 19

the Emperor – it is time to have the courage of your convictions and play an active role in organizing matters. Taking control of a situation puts you in a position of power and will enable you to direct the course of your life. You may have the opportunity to start a new business or establish a new home.

Be sure to explore different types of Meditation, being aware that everyone is unique and will use Meditation for different purposes in their life. Some Meditations are just to raise your vibration and some are for eliminating bad habits.

Taurus April 20 to May 20

the Empress – the time is ripe to channel your energies in a creative direction and come up with new ideas for the future. Look for practical ways in which you can express this strong sense of wanting to expand your life. Enjoy your creativity.

I promise you this: Once you open up and expand your mind, the rest will come naturally. You will be gratified that you started a new lifestyle on your own personal Pathway to Positivity in Mind, Body and Spirit.

Gemini May 21 to June 20

the 9 of Wands reversed – you may feel unable to stand up for your rights or be caught off-guard. This problem is from the past and has been encountered before. If you don’t have a good ally, keep on guard for these previous problems and stick up for yourself.

Whales Tale Restaurant

Sara Anne Fingerman Lifestyle Editor

The Ocean Resort at Bath and Tennis in Westhampton

I can spend the day at the pool or the beach relaxing and the restaurant fare is delicious. I usually end my day at The Salon and Spa where I enjoy an ocean view massage or get my hair styled by one of their master stylists. Day passes are $75 and if you book an appointment at the spa it’s only $35. (TheOceanResortAtWHB.com)

It’s summer. Eat outside as often as you can. One of our favorite “Al Fresco” eateries is Whales Tale located in the Brittania Yacht Club in Northport. With a harbor-side view, this small seasonal restaurant kills it during the summer. Owned by a Northport native, Whales Tale is loved by locals and its reputation has spread and has become a destination for those willing to travel. Whales Tale offers good beer and food for good people. I recommend their popular tacos... all of them; fish, steak, chicken, surf and turf, Maui, or Bang Bang Shrimp. How do I know their tacos are popular? This tiny little place served 4,273 tacos yesterday. How’s that for an endorsement. (WhalesTaleNPT.com)

Soho House

As traffic snakes eastbound along Sunrise Highway, I like to head west to my favorite staycation spot: Soho House. With a rooftop pool and swanky bar, it’s located in the middle of the meatpacking district with hoards of high-end shopping and trendy restaurants. I’m only a LIRR train ride away from an indulgent staycation in NYC. (SohoHouseNY.com)

Fire Island

Every LI beach is unique, for me, Fire Island is the most relaxing. Pack a lunch and your beach essentials, everything else nature provides. Getting to Fire Island by ferry is half the fun, so be sure to arrive early to get a seat on the upper deck for the best view. Check out some of the gear the boaters bring, from hot tubs to elaborate BBQ’s, it’s cool to see how others enjoy the water. (FireIsland.com)

The Nautical Mile

A great spot to relax and enjoy delicious food, live music, and just take in the nautical charm of Freeport in the summer. It’s a mile long stretch of fun with a beautiful water view and the carefree atmosphere is perfect for a dinner date or cocktails and dancing at one of the open-air bars. (TheNauticalMile.us)

Greenport

One of my favorite spots to visit during the summer is Greenport. Dining waterside is a must at Claudio’s Restaurant. Greenport also has several cool antique shops to check out and the carousel is fun for everyone. The walking trail at the Dam Pond Maritime Preserve, a favorite for bird watchers, is also unique for its maritime red cedar forest. It’s a great place to burn off the calories after a delicious meal. (VillageofGreenport.org)
