Community Spirit
Super Storm Sandy brought grief and heartache to an untold number of Long Islanders and affected an astounding 60 million Americans. As the devastation upon Long Island and New York City unfolded, there was shock and disbelief that a storm could wreak such havoc on us. Weeks later there were still thousands of homes and businesses without power and the cold, damp weather that ensued has made the recovery effort even more miserable for those affected. Sandy closed our waterways and ports, grounded airlines and even cancelled Halloween for the first time in memory. To compound the misery, gas lines formed that seemed to go on for miles and the anxiety level increased with our wait. Sandy exposed our vulnerability to the wind and water. The destruction of our coastal landscape will become legendary, but Sandy will also go down in history as the first catastrophe to occur in the US in the social media age. When we needed to communicate with each other, Facebook became the voice of the people and an efficient way to relay information to family and friends, suggestions on where to find gas, a way to organize food and clothing drives and even when and where to congregate for a demonstration against LIPA. Our mobile devices became an important link to the outside world and I am proud to say that the staff of our sister publication, Long Island Press, kept tens of thousands of Long Islanders informed on what was happening after the storm, while they simultaneously reported on where to vote and in many cases provided the results of our presidential Publisher election to our local Beverly Fortune population. apropos. This holiday season, more than ever, will be a poignant time for those who lost their homes and possessions to the storm. There is no doubt that they will rebuild, albeit carefully, with a stinging awareness of the power Mother Nature can wield. The entire staff of Milieu wishes everyone a peaceful holiday and a healthy and prosperous New Year, and we look forward to 2013.

Tis The Season To Try Tapas Photo by Jim Lennon
Chef Michael Wilson of Monsoon Asian Kitchen and Lounge in Babylon is on trend this holiday season and has added a delicious array of smallportioned plates to the menu. “Our appetizers are spread throughout the table and there are a lot of small bites,” Wilson says. One of his trendy tapas creations is a bib lettuce wrap with coconut roasted chicken and lime. Wilson suggests trying the tapas trend at home this holiday season. “It’s an icebreaker; it almost makes you be social,” he says.

Antipasto Christmas Tree Pringles Announces Three New HolidayInspired Flavors
A Side Of Poutine, merci!
Pringles has been doling out delicious crispy snacks since 1968. This year, just in time for the holidays, the potato chip giant will release three special holiday flavors to get you in the holiday spirit: Pumpkin Pie Spice, a take on the huge trend kicked off by coffee chains like Starbucks; White Chocolate Peppermint, a classic blend of cool peppermint and smooth white chocolate flavors that blends into a delicious combination; and Cinnamon & Sugar, dusted with real cinnamon and sugar, making each bite a salty and sweet sensation. “At Pringles, we love to bring flavors to our consumers, and we’re excited to offer these three flavors to stores this holiday season,” says Angela Gusse, Associate Director of Marketing at Pringles. And if these don’t suit your palate, there are always the traditional flavors like Ranch and Barbeque to keep on hand as backup. “As with any flavor, we know consumers’ preferences will vary,” says Gusse. But these are definitely worth a spot at your holiday party. ($1.79, Walmart, Walmart.com)
The famous Canadian comfort food, Poutine, an intensely-flavored take on French Fries has become so popular it’s being served in trendy restaurants in The Big Apple. Poutine originated in Quebec and consists of French fries topped with brown gravy and curd cheese. Foodies are adding Poutine to their Thanksgiving menus and introducing friends and family to the yummy trend. The dish is easy to make and if you’re adventurous you can add lamb, lobster meat or even caviar! While most Long Island establishments haven’t added Poutine to their menus just yet, McFadden’s in Rockville Centre is offering their own version of the trendy side dish, topped with shredded turkey, homemade gravy and provolone cheese! We just hope this Canadian gem will stick around longer than hockey did this season.

No meal is as yummy to eat and as hard to make as a Thanksgiving feast. This year, we can all be thankful that Iavarone Bros. will slave over the hot stove instead of us. “We do it all for you,” says Michael Vottari of Iavarone Bros. in Woodbury, regarding their many holiday catering options. “We save you a ton of time on cooking a turkey. It’s a great value.” Their four LI locations all offer Thanksgiving packages for as low as $189, according to Vottari. Your feast includes turkey, stuffing, potatoes, cranberry sauce and homemade gravy as well as a dessert. For big appetites, you can opt for a more exclusive package for $369, which comes with a choice of shrimp cocktail or antipasto platter, a starter green salad, choice of turkey, stuffing, two trimmings, potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy and a pie. Christmas catering with many traditional Italian dishes are also on the menu. “Everything is cooked fresh to order,” says Vottari. Sounds good to us! The weather outside may be frightful but it’s delightful in The Living Room, located in The Maidstone Hotel in East Hampton. Upon entering, you’ll be warmed by the crackling fireplace as you enjoy your surroundings before your holiday dinner. Chef James Carpenter says the hotel and restaurant is all about celebrating the holiday season and decorating the interior to make you feel welcomed and spirited. “We like new things, but we also like to keep things traditional for the holidays,” says Carpenter. The chef says they have become the headquarters for the East Hampton tree lighting ceremony, and their neighbor, centenarian Camilla Jewitt is the organizer of the festive event. After the revelry of carolers, music, and spread of good cheer, Carpenter says the party moves inside. “The table right in front of the fireplace is the popular one.” (207 Main St., East Hampton. 631-324-5006, TheMaidstone.com)

• Wash and thoroughly dry a bunch of Romaine lettuce. • On a green foam cone (available at craft stores) approximately 24 inches high, attach each leaf with a toothpick, continue around the “tree” and follow with a second tier of leaves until completely covered. • Using toothpicks, decorate the tree with black and green olives, pepperdews, pepperoni, bite-size pieces of cheese (different varieties), cooked shrimp and cherry tomatoes. • Place a prosciutto “tree skirt” under the tree and serve with crackers. Holiday Dessert & Drinks
ssica Craig Photo by Je
Mad About Bacon There’s a bacon shortage predicted for 2013 and it has everyone going bacon crazy RIGHT NOW. Usually fried up and served as a side with eggs, the crunchy sweet pork is now being added to high-end dessert dishes. Pastry Chef Jessica Craig of East Hampton’s Nick & Toni’s has been whipping up her extra-special bacon-infused treat, the salted caramel tart with pancetta brittle gelato. Craig says that the dish is hot on the heels of a new trend. “A lot of what is trending is savory crossed over with pastry,” she says. If you’d rather enjoy your bacon while channel surfing, check out the Boss Hog’s Chocolate Bacon Brittle, a fancy confection of chocolate-covered morsels with flecks of bacon hidden underneath, from BaconFreak.com.
Classic Dessert Remix Chef Jenn Calvert from Huntington Social has created an array of classic desserts that she’s updated to deliciously chic! The chef’s new caramel apple takes traditional carnival fare to another level with her apple cinnamon caramel panacotta topped with peanuts. “It’s easier to eat, and a nice deconstruction of the original,” says Calvert. Her rendition of tiramisu is like a sundae and she took the flavor of pumpkin spiced coffee and created a pumpkin spiced cupcake. For those on a diet, bananas are used to slash calories in her delicious bread pudding recipe. Calvert suggests trying your own hand at an easy and flavorful bread pudding, “Especially on a cold rainy day, bread pudding is simple and warms you up,” she says.
A party isn’t complete without serving a special drink. Mark Zecher, owner of Honu Kitchen & Cocktails in Huntington is stirring up some sensational seasonal fruity spirits this year. “We do a Honu autumn sangria using red wine, Bacardi Oakheart rum, and we finish it with fall fruits like apple, pear, and grape. We also use Saint Germain to give it a nice botanical flavor,” he says. Grill 454 in Commack is serving Pomegranate Martinis created with vodka, Pama Liqueur, cranberry juice and a splash of sour mix. Chef Gregg Lauletta of Prime Restaurant in Huntington suggests serving colorful and sweet cranberry champagne, Rare 650 in Syosset is busy pouring their Espresso Martini, made with Van Gogh Espresso, Absolute vanilla vodka and a shot of iced espresso.
Specialty Brews
New York, the Yogurt Capital of the World? Celebrate the season with yogurt and you might help New York win the title of Yogurt Capital of the World—seriously! Serving locally made yogurt will add that special touch to your holiday party and Goodale Farms in Aquebogue has the freshest. They recently became Long Island’s only local dairy offering fresh milk from their cows and goats and they offer an assortment of other fresh dairy products. The farm’s cheesemaker, Karen Danzer, says yogurt is delightful this time of the year, she suggests topping with seasonal fruits or just a dash of maple syrup. If you want to add an extra special spark to your party, Pinkberry will introduce it’s new holiday flavor, Gingerbread, on Nov. 16. Serve with crushed ginger snaps, white chocolate crisps and nutmeg! Yum!
Long Island breweries are also in on the holiday spirit and are whipping up specialty brews. The Great South Bay Brewery offers two festive pouring options like Snaggletooth Stout, a chocolatey roasted stout with cinnamon, licorice root and fresh apples from Briermeire Farms in Riverhead and Sleigh Ryed Winter Ale, a jolly and smooth ale with a malty rye flavor speckled with piney notes of juniper berries. Blue Point Brewery is pouring Pumpkin Ale, brewed from local pumpkin patches and Winter Ale, a hearty and robust amber ale created with Vienna, crystal and chocolate malts. They’re sure to keep you toasty on those long winter nights.
Stay-cation Hershey Park
Hershey Park is a destination guaranteed to bring joy to everyone in your family. The smell of chocolate infuses the air no matter where you are and the delicious destination comes to life during the holiday season. Hershey is transformed into a winter wonderland, decked out in twinkling lights and festive decorations. Visitors can enjoy N.O.E.L, an amazing light show, Santa’s Secret Garden and culinary events like Christmas in Chocolate Town, A Holiday Dinner Musical and the Twilight Express. Don’t miss Hershey Sweet, a drive-thru spectacular vision that’s decked out with 600 themed light displays. “There’s something for everyone. Alot of our packages we try to pair all of these things together,” says Public Relations Coordinator Reilly Feis. Packages start at $359 and include everything from Breakfast with Santa to a special New Year’s Eve party where guests can enjoy a dancing, dinner and a dessert buffet, filled with chocolatey Hershey goodies, of course! Doomsday? You’d Better Belize-It!

Belcampo Belize
The Mayans predict that Doomsday is coming on 12/21/12 and while some perceive this as the end of the world, many interpret the date as a spiritual rebirth and renewal to be celebrated. Belize is the perfect place to be when and if their prediction comes true. The English speaking country in Central America has so much to offer for the adventurer, including exploring the ancient Mayan ruins. Belcampo Belize is a 12-room agritourism eco-hotel nestled in a rainforest preserve tha’ts offering folks a special Delicious Doomsday package (rates start at $3,690). The package includes accommodations, meals and offers vacationers the chance to immerse themselves in Mayan culture. Here, you can opt to go on an archeological dig where you might unearth Mayan archeology in the ancient ruins, enjoy coffee and rum tastings, jungle adventures and luxurious spa treatments. “What makes this package unique is the high concentration of Mayan people leading a largely traditional life in southern Belize. We offer, quite literally, a taste of Mayan culture with deep roots in the past,” says Mara Jernigan, GM for Belcampo Belize. (Punta Gorda, Toledo, Belize, Central America, BelcampoInc.com)

Cover Story
Millions of people around the world are familiar with Long Island’s most popular psychic mediums—celebrated author and talk show host John Edward and sassy mom Theresa Caputo, star of the hit TLC television show Long Island Medium. Yet what many don’t know is that Long Island is a hotbed of paranormal activity, psychic energy and human conduits, ranging from psychic mediums, past-life regression therapists, tarot card readers and even animal communicators—who claim to relay messages from alive and deceased pets. So in the spirit of the holidays (and to satiate our own curiosities), we sat down with eight of Long Island’s other, perhaps lesser-known clairvoyants, entering their oft-whispered-about world to experience whatever it may hold for us firsthand. What we learned was enlightening, astonishing, a bit bizarre—and in some cases, flat-out hard to believe. Deceased ancestors professing they’ve found our Prince Charmings, a past life as an Aboriginal wanderer scouring the dense jungles of Brazil, children in the near future—besides gaining new insights about the afterlife, we also discovered new truths about ourselves along the way. (Though we’re still coming to terms with whatever those realities exactly mean.) Here’s a few of our experiences.
Licia’s Lifetimes of Love Past-life regression therapist Richard Scheinberg’s home office in Islip is a warm color, with framed diplomas on the walls mixed with kids’ paintings and flowers throughout. “It’s very New Age,” he tells me as I nervously kick off my black UGG boots

in an attempt to get comfortable for the two-hour session. “You’ve got to free your mind. I know it’s hard and as a reporter you may be thinking of notes to jot down and remember, but try not to, try to relax.” He grabs his notepad, makes sure his recorder is cued, and turns off one of the lamps nearest to the door. “Breathe in,” he says as I cover myself with a blanket and recline on a couch. “Two, three, four, five, six, seven—hold. Two, three, four, five, six, seven—breathe out. Two, three, four, five, six, seven—hold. Two, three, four, five, six, seven…” Scheinberg says to imagine a bright
“I want you to look at your friend right now and tell me what you see,” responds Schienberg. “She has bangs, long brown hair; she’s wearing a collared dress.” “What’s her name?” he asks. “Kristen.” “Okay so here you are getting ready to leave and you’ve met your friend Kristen and you’ve given her your bracelet but you’re a little disappointed that school wasn’t what you thought it would be, and what happens next?” he asks. “I go home. I tell my mom that I gave the bracelet to my friend Kristen,” I say. “I’m just laying on my bed crying.” I was also crying as I lay on the sofa.
Long Island is a hotbed of paranormal activity, psychic energy and human conduits, ranging from psychic mediums, past-life regression therapists, tarot card readers and even animal communicators. light shining through my body, cleansing my body, relaxing my body. His voice leads me down steps into a “peaceful garden” where I am free to recover memories from childhood. “If you want you can just float above the scene as if watching from a distance,” he says. “Or you can be in it, feeling it, seeing it vividly with colors and details, with emotions and feelings, this is always up to you.” Soon, I see visions of kindergarten. A red, blue and green beaded bracelet. “I want to give the beads to my teacher, the bracelet, but I can’t,” I say from within a trance. “She makes me too scared, so I give it to my friend.”

About a half hour later, Scheinberg guides me back further. “There is no limit to your memory,” he says in a monotone, rhythmic, calming, soothing tone. “You can go back as far as you wish. In this lifetime you can go back to your infancy, to your birth, perhaps even in utero. This is not limited and you can remember everything. I’m going to take you to a place where all past memories lie. There’s those energies from past memories including previous lifetimes that all reside deep inside you.” “I feel like I’m in a jungle,” I tell him. “That I’m with a few people and we’re on the ground. There’s really tall pieces
of grass and trees and we’re running through that, like a light gray tree, trees that are really tall, we seem small compared to what’s around us.” “Tell me more,” the voice says. “I feel like we’re wearing brown leather-like dresses, or skirts and carrying something in my hand…some sort of blade…I’m a woman and I’m in the front of the people…I don’t know where we are going but I’m scared. I just feel like there might be like a tiger…I’m really tan, dark skin and I have really dark hair, I see it, long black hair…someone screamed ‘Tiger!’” “Okay, so somebody spotted the tiger,” responds Scheinberg. “Okay, so you knew to get out of the way before the tiger surprised you, that was smart. Okay, so now you feel safe and you’re all together with the people behind you? Tell me more about the people that were behind you, what do they look like?” “They’re tall, dark hair, dark skin, they’re not, they don’t look African. The skin is darker than white but not so, it’s like a brown…they’re wearing the same skirt I am…I feel like where we are is a rainforest, it’s bigger than a jungle, the trees are so high, and it’s so wet all over… we’re in South America in Brazil…we’re climbing trees.” “Do the others have names?” asks Scheinberg. “I feel like one is Nabu,” I respond. “What do they call out to you?” he asks. “What do they say?” “Mala.” “What I want to do, because you obviously have to go back down, you have to get food, what I want to do is take you to the next important event in this lifetime,” he tells me. “What I’m going to do is count from five to one, you’re going to tell me about the next important event in this lifetime: Five, four, three, two, one. Milieu Exclusive
Clint You might think Long Island’s By Jaime Franchi Jaime@MilieuLI.com own Clinton Kelly would be too busy to cultivate a Facebook presence while starring in not just one but two hit television shows, TLC’s What Not to Wear and ABC daytime’s The Chew, designing a line of women’s clothes for QVC, Kelly by Clinton Kelly, touring the country as a Macy’s spokesperson, and working on his newest book being released in September 2013, Freakin’ Fabulous on a Budget.. But Clinton finds the time to dedicate at least an hour each day to interact with his fans on Facebook, giving advice on fashion, entertaining and life. “I realize that these people who are posting on my page have feelings and want to be heard. It sounds a little cliche, but quite frankly, I wouldn’t be where I am today without these fans,” he told me. I “friended” Clinton when a friend of mine shared his status in reference to a Facebook post Clinton made after the Aurora movie theater shooting in Colorado. His comment said that he wished this country would “do more to keep guns out of the hands of the criminally insane.” Immediately after his comment was posted, he lost 200 “likes,” but he gained one “like,” mine. “I get it,” Clinton says of his controversial posting. “We have a Second Amendment that gives us the right to bear arms. I made a comment that set off a big gun discussion where people got really nasty with me. And it’s interesting, right? Because some people, they get mad at you if you have an opinion. They’re like, ‘Just stick to fashion,’ or ‘Just do your TV show and don’t tell me how to run my life.’ And I’m like, ‘What? I’m a person. I’m interacting on my Facebook page as human being to human being. And now you’re telling me that I can’t have an opinion?’” Like most of us, Clinton has plenty of opinions, and I was curious about his take on how Long Island women dress. “They have colorful personalities and a lot of guts when it comes to fashion,” he said, “But from what I’ve noticed, they tend to fall back on black.” Growing up in Port Jefferson Station with two younger sisters, Clinton had plenty of time to notice Long Island fashion. “[It runs] the gamut,” he told me, “From very fashion forward to very casual.” If he had any advice for us, it would be to lose one accessory. Simple chic never goes out of style. He also suggests that this winter our wardrobes should include a chic trench coat, dark wash jeans that fit like a glove, some great riding boots, and a cashmere sweater, with perhaps a printed blouse beneath. “It’s not about spending a ton of money on logos,” he said. “An elegant style is all about fit.” His loyalty to Macy’s led almost naturally to his stint as their spokesperson. “Macy’s as a brand gets what I’m about,” Clinton says. “Style is for every woman, no matter her size, her age, or how much money she has to spend. I’m not about dressing a size 2 woman because that’s a really small percentage of who’s out there. I’m about helping a size 12 woman find the right pair of jeans so that her butt looks great. And Macy’s really gets that.” On The Chew, ABC’s daytime talk show with a foodie theme, Clinton is part of an ensemble cast featuring Carla Hall, Daphne Oz, Michael Symon and celeb-chef Mario Batali. Clinton has met scores of celebrities and shared his ultimate top three: Olivia Newton-John, whom he’s revered since childhood; JoBeth Williams, whom he half

fell in love with watching Poltergeist; and Jewel, whom he says is as sweet and beautiful as he imagined when he played her 1995 album Pieces of You on repeat, ad infinitum. One of the most strikingly beautiful—and nicest—celebrities that he’s gotten to meet is Vanessa Williams. “I couldn’t stop staring at her! And she has the prettiest hands, not a wrinkle on them, just long and elegant,” he says. “She could have been a hand model, you know, if the acting thing didn’t work out.” You would think that rubbing elbows with stars everyday would be thrilling, but Clinton keeps his priorities straight. “I’m not impressed by celebrity,” he says. “I work with them and have become friends with some of them, but it’s nonfamous women who I really love.” Growing up on Long Island, Clinton’s first job was as a busboy at Danford’s Hotel & Marina in Port Jefferson. After cashing his paycheck, he remembers heading to the Smithhaven Mall in nearby Lake Grove. “Back then, they had Macy’s, A&S, and Sears,” he said. “I would spend my whole paycheck on clothes at Macy’s or in downtown Port Jefferson. “Remember Alexander Julian shirts?” Winter 2012

he laughed. “Now when I come back to visit and go down to Port (what the locals call Port Jefferson Village), I just love what a quaint town it is,” he says. Clinton is very close with his family. “They ran a tight ship, albeit a caring and supportive one,” he says. “We’re all still super close as a family because it was a group effort. That’s what family is, it’s a group of people working toward a common goal: a loving family. “And they were the most amazingly supportive parents. They were always there. And they let us know that what we were doing was important to them.” Ironically, it was in an ode to family support that led to our friendship on social media. Clinton’s Facebook status updates, lighthearted quips urging the populace to “wear something cute and don’t take any crap,” candid pictures, and self-effacing comments, would appear in my feed. But there was one personal revelation that touched me so deeply that I felt that I had to let him know. His post: Back from Anguilla. I took my mom and dad on a vacation as a thank you for being totally awesome. I don’t have kids,
but I still think I can speak with authority on what it takes to be a great parent: Be supportive. Your kid says, “I want to play the tuba!” You say, “That’s a great idea. Let’s get you a tuba.” Your kid says, “I want to be a dancer!” You say, “Fabulous. Let’s figure out how to get you some dance lessons.” Your kid says, “I want to be a writer!” You say, “I will get you all the pens and paper you could ever want.” Then, you sit through every concert, attend every dance recital and read every short story. And in 43 years you will be taken on a vacation to Anguilla. :) Happy Monday! As I was “liking” his thoughtful post (along with more than 16,000 others), my son approached me with an unusual request: Could he wear a tuxedo for his first day of second grade? My first instinct was to say, “Don’t be silly.” But Clinton’s words stopped me. So I bought my son a tuxedo and I sent Clinton a message telling him about it. When the first day of school came, I sent a picture of my kid in that tux. And in Clinton’s words, “He rocked it.” That tuxedo will get my son through the holiday season, but what about me? milieuli.com

There is no one better to ask than Clinton, who offered me (and you) a wardrobe guide for the upcoming holiday season. For Thanksgiving: “You want to be comfy and fab. You’re most likely in someone’s house, so you don’t have to get overdressed. Maybe some tailored pants with a cashmere sweater.” For a company office party, he advises keeping it tasteful. “Too many women go to these parties looking like sluts. This is not the time to wear a strapless minidress! You can show a little bit of cleavage, but then make sure you cover your legs.” New Year’s Eve, however, is your time to let it all out: “New Year’s is all about the sparkle, whether you wear a sequin dress or top with some fabulous tuxedo pants. You need to have some kind of shine. It could be in the fabric you choose, like a satin, or some statement jewelry.” This is where Clinton himself sparkles: helping me, a regular Long Island soccer mom, who has never been a size 2, figure out what to wear. Clinton might be the fashion guru and entertainment expert of our time, but he’ll always be a Long Island guy talking to his girlfriends: wry, funny, and absolutely real.

Everyone has some sort of scarring on their skin due to injury, infection or surgery. Some scars are cosmetically unpleasant and psychologically bothersome, whether they are on the face (e.g. acne scars, chicken pox) or elsewhere on the body (e.g. surgical scars, stretch marks, keloid scars). In the past, treatments for scar removal were not satisfactory. New laser therapies have been shown to dramatically reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks. Although traditional therapies may still be used in conjunction with lasers to achieve the best possible results, lasers are being used more frequently, as they are minimally-invasive and often require no recovery time. Laser treatment will depend on the patient’s skin color, age, the location, thickness and color of the scar. vbeam, Pixel, Fraxel, Nd:Yag, Genesis plus and Erbium lasers can be utilized for a scar reduction. The laser can reduce the thickness or raise a depressed scar. With so many new options available to remove scars and stretch marks, an experienced laser surgeon can work with you to achieve the desired results with minimal to no downtime. Joshua L. Fox, MD is a leading authority in the field of dermatology, laser procedures and cosmetic surgery. he serves as a medical director of Advanced dermatology PC, and the Center for Laser and Cosmetic Surgery, with seven locations throughout Long Island, Queens & Manhattan. visit us at: GetMeGreatSkin.com.

One More Girl or One Less?
H E A LTH
By Jaime Franchi Jaime@MilieuLI.com
Mary C. was a normal 18-year-old. A high school athlete, she was on her way to college to fulfill her dream of playing Division 1 volleyball. Before leaving for school she received all of her routine immunization shots from her primary physician, including Gardasil, the vaccine recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for all girls between the ages of 9 and 26 to prevent the HPV virus. Known as one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases, HPV is also linked to cervical cancer and it’s a virus most women will
college volleyball,” she says. “I collapsed in April and had to take medical leave— and remained basically on bed rest for the entire summer and most of the fall. I was unable to walk on my own or stand up for more than 5 minutes without fainting.” When Merck announced the release of Gardasil in 2006, the CDC quickly endorsed it and recommended its use. By vaccinating virtually all women, it would seem that American society was on its way towards a solution to eradicating a deadly disease.
Gardasil’s huge social media campaign “One Less” victim of HPV for every girl and boy vaccinated spawned OneMoreGirl, a video produced by two brothers whose sister became ill from the vaccine.
come in contact with by the age of 30. Even though Mary wasn’t sexually active or considered a high-risk for cervical cancer, she was given Gardasil as part of the routine shots given to girls. “A few weeks after the shot, I noticed flu like symptoms,” she says. “When I returned to college in January, I started to lose my vision at my first morning workout. The room was spinning, I had headaches in weird parts of my head, and I began vomiting during sprints. My blood pressure was dropping 40 points when I stood up, but there was no known ‘cause’ for it.” Doctors started giving her meds to raise her blood pressure but her symptoms just kept getting worse. She was misdiagnosed with an eating disorder, anxiety problems and depression. “Meanwhile I was the happiest I’d ever been and living my dream of playing Winter 2012
But Dr. Christiane Northrup, physician and acclaimed author of six books on women’s health and wellness including Mother-Daughter Wisdom and New York Times best-seller The Wisdom of Menopause, urges women to proceed carefully when considering Gardasil. She states there are more than 70 strains of the HPV virus and only about 13 can be traced back as the cause of cervical cancer. Gardasil protects against only four of them. “The virus clears spontaneously by the immune system within two years in over 90 percent of all women, posing no risk at all,” she says. Northrup urges women to take a more proactive method of reducing risk for HPV including a healthy diet, safe sex practices and regular gynecological check-ups, including HPV screenings. Vaccinations have been at the heart of numerous debates because they are an important part of a healthy society, and they are very profitable for pharmaceutical companies like Merck, the makers of Gardasil. At a cost of about $360 per person, Merck has made astounding profits from Gardasil by vaccinating millions of women. Finding out who is deemed high risk and a candidate for the vaccine is not easily defined. Those with unsafe sexual behavior would be more likely to contract HPV, but for a physician to determine this, the patient would need to be honest with her physician about her sexual practices. An unreliable process at best, it would seem that vaccinating all women might sound like a safe idea. “I had a patient in her 30s who was bisexual, she swings, she does all of these things,” says Tara Ford, a Physician’s Assistant at The Medical Center for Female Sexuality in Queens, “My supervising physician who heads male urology, came to me and said that maybe I should consider giving her the vaccine. But I thought, ‘No, she’s already been exposed to it. That’s not how it works.’” The idea that the vaccination could vastly reduce or even eliminate HPV, and with it, the number one cause of cervical cancer is the exact reason Dr. Jason Hitner, a board certified pediatrician from North Babylon, recommends Gardasil. “From a public health standpoint, it makes a difference,” he says. “When these viruses infect the cells in the cervical region, it causes these cells to replicate abnormally. And with other predisposing factors, it can cause cancer in the cervical region. Not everyone who gets infected will get cervical cancer. And not everyone who gets cervical cancer had HPV. But there’s definitely a very strong correlation here.” It took nearly 60 doctors over a year before Mary C. was diagnosed with POTS disease (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome). POTS involves the nervous system and how it communicates with blood cells and can be debilitating, causing dizziness, lethargy and weakness, among other symptoms, all of which Mary suffers. It was a board certified neurologist who traced the cause of Mary’s illness back to the Gardasil vaccine. “I completely regret getting [Garda-
sil],” says Mary. “I was 18 years old and doing what my doctor told me to do—I put total faith in them with no knowledge of the danger of vaccines—particularly this vaccine. Doctors won’t ever talk about the risk because they think the benefit of preventing cervical cancer outweighs it, but I would’ve taken my chances with cancer any day over living with a disease that will never go away.” Deciding on whether or not to vaccinate your children with Gardasil comes down to the known risks and benefits— and the math. According to Merck, the Gardasil vaccine reduces the risk of the HPV virus by 90 percent. According to Dr. Northrup, there are 6,797 cases of cervical cancer caused by HPV per year in the US. During a clinical trial, Dr. Northrup
“That translates to sickening more than 14,000 women and children in order to help about 6,000”

reported that there were 102 adverse events in 21,514 women and children who received the vaccine or the aluminum containing placebo. “This translates to 474 adverse events per 1 million people getting vaccinated,” the report reads. “Conservatively speaking, that’s 14,220 (474 x 30 million) adverse events expected if you were to give the vaccine as recommended to about 30 million women and girls—the approximate number of people in the target market for Gardasil.” That translates to sickening more than 14,000 women and children in order to help about 6,000. “All diseases are rare until it happens to your child,” Dr. Hitner says. “I think that it’s somewhat naive to believe that you might be non-susceptible. Statistics can only bring you so far.” In the end, it’s up to the parents to decide which is the bigger risk, the vaccine or HPV. “It seems like people in the medical community are starting to waffle on it as more information about side effects are being reported,” says Ford. “Some support the vaccine 100 percent. Others don’t. And the decision is now left in the parents’ hands and that’s a very difficult thing to decide.” Winter 2012

adopt a polar bear
There is little doubt that wildlife has been affected by climate change. According to Polar Bears International, summer ice loss in the Arctic now equals an area the size of Alaska, Texas and the state of Washington combined. Polar bears use sea ice for their daily survival and the massive melting has had devastating effects. Polar bears were added to the growing list of threatened species under the Endangered Species Act in 2008 and have little hope of being removed from the list. You can help by donating to Polar Bears International’s research, stewardship and education efforts by “adopting” a polar bear. There are four levels of adoption, ranging from $30 to $250. Depending on the amount, adopters can receive a personalized framed certificate, stuffed polar bear and copy of Tundra Times magazine while providing an interactive way to get children interested in protecting our environment. Glitter Snow Globe A fun craft that can serve as a holiday decoration for years to come!
Materials: An empty baby food or jam jar; glitter; waterproof glue; waterproof toy or object you would like in your globe (We used Christmas collectibles from Cobblestone Corners available at Dollar Tree); glycerin. Step 1. Glue your object to the underside of the jar lid and let dry. Step 2. Add 2 tbs. of glitter to the jar and fill with water. To make the glitter fall slowly, add a few drops of glycerin. Make sure that the jar is overflowing with water so there are no air bubbles. Step 3. Apply glue to the threaded rim of the jar and screw the lid on. Keep paper towels handy because the water should overflow from the jar at this point. Step 4. Flip the jar upside-down and let it snow!

The 17th Annual Dickens Festival
Local author Niki Bhatia of Woodbury was inspired by her own sons who loved pink when they were little. In her book, the main character, a little boy, faces confusing messages when his older brother tells him that he can’t wear pink or play with dolls because he’s a boy. “The whole message that I wanted to get across is that we have to be a little more open minded and stop stereotyping everything. Children should be allowed to play with any toy that they want without the fear of being teased or taunted. Toys are just toys, let them just play and explore their world, because that’s what toys are for,” says Bhatia. “You can’t expect kids to be accepting and tolerant in middle school when they’ve already built a sense of what is right for them and what is wrong.” (Pink is Just a Color and So is Blue is available on Amazon.com for $7.99.)
Take your kids back in time during to Port Jefferson’s Charles Dickens Festival. The village transforms into living literature with more than 50 performing acts and 100 street characters. “There are Dickens readings, plays, classical music, Christmas music in the different churches and the village center,” says Port Jefferson Art Council Chair Allan Varela. “It’s a massive thing. We transform the village into a Dickens village.” (Nov. 30, Dec. 1 & Dec. 2, PortJeffChamber.com)
Drive-in movie party Drive-in movie theaters may be a distant
memory, but that doesn’t mean you can’t create one in your own living room. Gather some boxes (Make sure they are large enough to sit comfortably), paint, markers or crayons, paper plates, pie tins and duct tape and let the fun begin! Have the kids design their own cars, then attach black paper plates for wheels and pie tins for headlights. After the “cars” are dry, bring them inside, serve some popcorn and get the party started! Oh, don’t forget to have a great movie on hand, like Cars! (NotJustAHousewife.com)

We provide direct access and a direct way to help them.” If you’d like to volunteer and/or donate toys, clothing, household goods, food and pet supplies, call 631-271-8697 or visit ToysOfHope.org.
