can originate from many sources. Mine comes from the women I meet through my Fortune 52 column in the Long Island Press and in Milieu. These women personify what is right in the world, even if their life might have gone horribly wrong. In honor of the incalculable number of women around the world, but especially of our sisters on Long Island who are battling breast cancer, we wanted to tell you one of their stories. When I met Samantha Fried, she had recently gone through two surgeries, the second was to remove both of her breasts. At just 35 years old Sam has experienced more than most of us will ever have to endure. Before I write anymore, flip back to the cover of Milieu. That’s Samantha, a few days before her surgery. In this photo I see both her fierceness and her femininity. I hope after reading her story you will be moved to get involved this October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month and continue to support these women throughout the year. Many want the dollars they raise to go to research, others opt to help local women get through grassroots non profits. Either way, you’re helping others in their battle—the very least we can do for these female warriors. Our cover story is a subject that has been debated online, in print, on television and the radio: Has the media exploited the so-called “War on Women” or does it really exist? As a political novice, I listened and then opined and then I started getting mad. When I asked other women their thoughts, there was a mixed response. Some were unaware of the debate and others said, “That will never happen.” So, we gave the assignment to our editorial team. Is there a War on Women? The story begins on p. 27. Every quote we used was vetted and confirmed. I’ll leave you to read the story and make your own informed decision. My goal is to get you to vote. How you vote is up to you. If you’re not registered yet, there’s still time. All of the information is on the Milieu website, MilieuLI.com. If you’d like to receive the next issue of Milieu being published on Nov. 15, please email us your home address and you’ll Publisher receive the next issue Beverly Fortune in the mail, free of Art Director charge. I hope you Jon Sasala ASSOCIATE PUBLISHER/ enjoy reading this SALES DIR. issue and if it sparks Amanda Kollmer a conversation, then
we’ve done our job. In honor of the newest Fortune 52 honorees I’m hosting a free networking event on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at Tilles Center for the Performing Arts. It’s a great way to meet these extraordinary women and other Long Island business professionals. If you’d like to be added to the guest list, please email me. Warm Regards,

Bangs Are Back... Again Cleopatra was on to something with her “bad girl” bangs because for thousands of years, they’ve continued to boomerang back into style, and this year’s no different. “More than ever, the fringe is in,” says Richard Calcasola of Maximus Salon and Spa in Carle Place, who raves, “It’s the easiest and fastest way to update any hairstyle.” While banging it does involve quite the commitment—if you’ve ever had bangs, you’ll know how stressful it can be to grow them out—it’s certainly worth it. “There is no age limit. For an older woman it can make you look younger, and at the same time make a young woman look older,” says Josephine Abbatiello of Studio Novelle in Carle Place. If you’re still not sure, just Google Jessica Biel, Rooney Mara, Lea Michele, Beyonce, or Rachel McAdams, and you’ll see how BIG this BANG trend really is. And if you’re really commitment-phobic you can always pick up clip-in bangs at the mall. Wear them to work Monday, take them out Tuesday!

Pies are always hot in the fall but this year, they’re so hot the International Dairy-Deli-Bakery Association’s “What’s In Store 2012” report is saying that pie is the next “It” dessert. “We think pies are a classic and distinctly American seasonal food,” explains Remsen Dooley of Young’s Farm in Brookville, famous for their popular Autumn Apple Crisp, Apple and Pumpkin Pies. For those looking to cut some calories, a new and delicious confection is the pie pop. These mini pies on sticks follow the huge cake pop mega-trend. Aside from dessert or a treat, pie pops also make great appetizers for entertaining guests. They’re easy to make at home with the Babycakes Pie Pop maker ($24.99, TheBabyCakesShop.com). You can whip up six mini pies filled with whatever filling you desire in just under five minutes. Starbucks has jumped on the bandwagon with their own mini pies. The coffee chain offers “Petites” pies in apple and cherry, topped off with a sprinkling of sugar. ($1.50 each at Starbucks)

Risotto Lollipop from Roots Bistro. Photos by Roots co-owner Philippe Corbet
Roots Bistro
Roots Bistro Gourmand was recently opened in West Islip by French-trained chef Philippe Corbet and partner James Orlandi whose desire was to bring French cuisine with gastronomic techniques enjoyed in a bistro setting to Long Islanders. The bistro-barn atmosphere offers exciting ambiance with a twist—tin ceilings, a living wall, vintage wood flooring and a modern zinc bar—all inspired by nature. The restaurant serves up items inspired by fresh, local ingredients combined with exciting global flavors like pressed suckling pig, slow cooked with caramelized heart of palm and baby carrots on the appetizer menu and entrees like Marseille Bouillabaisse with Saffron Fish Broth and Striped Bass, Shrimp, Mussels, Clams, Monkfish, Rouille and Baguette Garlic Crouton. Mon Dieu! Desserts like their unique Pop Rocks, well they rock: Coconut Ice Cream with Toasted Coconut, Macerated Strawberries, Candied Mint, Pop Rocks and Crème are c’est delicious. “We try to be very inventive with the products,” says Corbet. “We make everything in-house like bread and ice cream. We’re all about local produce and trying to be very green.” (399 Montauk Hwy., West Islip, 631-587-2844, RootsBistroGourmand.com)

REALITY
Just in time to de-stress after getting the kids back to school or catching up with work after summer vacation, National Spa Week returns on Oct. 15. “We work with top-tier spas all over Long Island,” says Spa Week publicist Kelly Verdi. “There’s something for everyone’s wellness needs on the Spa Week menu.” Spa Week brings back old favorites like the Swedish massage as well as exciting new treatments like the Autumn Glow Body Retreat or Pumpkin Latte Facial available at Blue Sapphire Spa in Port Jefferson. “[Spa Week] is a wonderful way to bring people who don’t come to your spa or never heard of your spa or don’t get a chance to do little luxurious treatments because of a budget. It gives them an opportunity to join in and try something,” says Lisa Forsyth, Blue Sapphire Spa owner. For a complete directory of participants and services available visit SpaWeek.com.

New York Marriott At The Brooklyn Bridge
Brooklyn is one of those places that can seem so close, yet so far, and many of us don’t venture out to the westernmost tip of our Island. Now it’s official: Brooklyn is the new “It” spot, not only home to the famous Brooklyn Bridge and Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, but also the Barclays Center, a beautiful new venue that is bringing world-class entertainment and sports to the Island. Make it a weekend and stay at the official hotel of the Barclays Center. Whether you’re taking in a Nets or Islanders/Devils game this fall, or the highly anticipated Kellogg’s Tour of Gymnastics Champions or Barbra Streisand, or you just want to explore some local sites, the Marriott is the place to rest your head. The hotel boasts 638 rooms, 28 suites and The Archives, an American-inspired restaurant and lounge, as well as an indoor pool and fitness center. You can always join a slew of Brooklynites who jog, walk or bike across the bridge for a scenic workout, too. Maison Moschino, Milan
Hot off New York Fashion Week, we wanted to recommend one of the most fashionable hotels in the world. The Maison Moschino is located in fashionable Milan and is also a work of art, designed by world-famous fashion icon Moschino. Decorated to resemble a fabulous dream, 16 of its 65 rooms are designed to evoke different fantasies. “Alice’s Room,” “Life is a Bed of Roses,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Forest” and “Gold” are just a few of the themed rooms, featuring everything from hanging trees sprouting out of bed posts to clouds suspended throughout the room. Our favorite is “Sleeping in a Ball Gown” with a bed that looks just like that. The hotel is located in what was the city’s first railway station, a neoclassical building that sits in the heart of the modern center of Milan. Besides the fabulous rooms, guests can also enjoy the Technogym, lounge bar and boutique. There’s also an ART SPA on premises that provides guests with essential treatments including oxygen therapy and hydrotherapy. “It is completely unlike other hotels, and it also has the courage to reveal the high-quality workmanship that built it,” said Rossella Jardini, the creative director of Moschino. “Is There A War on Women?” By Spencer Rumsey That was the question recently posed at the packed VFW Post 5253 hall in Albertson by Ann Salpeter Schockett, president of the Nassau County Federation of Republican Women, and Wendy Long, the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in New York, had a provocative reply. “The Democrats have been inflating this balloon about this phony war on women now for the last year,” Long told the crowd. “And the whole reason they cook this up is because they have such a dismal, dismal record on jobs and the economy, which are number one in the minds of almost every voter in this country and certainly in this state…. Frankly, what women are concerned about is not really birth control, what women are concerned about is spending control.” Judging from the approving response, her answer certainly seemed to appeal to this clearly conservative crowd who came out to hear her on the night when former President Bill Clinton addressed the Democratic National Convention, where speakers had been criticizing the Republicans for attempting to “roll back” women’s reproductive rights and blocking women’s efforts to get equal pay. There may not be an actual “war,” but everyone agrees that women’s issues are on the front lines this November, and whom women vote for could make the difference in a close election. No one argues that the two parties do differ starkly on a woman’s right to choose. The Republican Party’s convention platform says that, “We assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed.” That plank has been interpreted to mean that there would be no exceptions for abortion, even if a woman were raped. Long takes that position, according to her campaign spokesman Dave Catalfamo, who tells Milieu, “Her position is pretty clear. She believes in protecting life from conception through death. She’s never veered from that.” By contrast, the other platform states, “The Democratic Party strongly and unequivocally supports Roe v. Wade and a woman’s right to choose a safe and legal abortion, regardless of ability to pay, and we oppose any and all efforts to weaken or undermine that right. The Democratic Party also strongly supports access to affordable family planning services and comprehensive age-appropriate sex education which empower people to make informed choices and live healthy lives.” That’s the view shared by Sen. Kirsten
“The Democrats have been inflating this balloon about this phony war on women now for the last year,
more restrictive for women by fighting tooth and nail against an equal pay mandate, and vowing to defund Planned Parenthood [the nonprofit family planning, reproductive health care and sex education services provider] when most of its services are geared towards preventative care and cancer screenings, just to cite two examples.” Women’s issues could be key to who and the whole reason they cook this up is because they wins the First District Congressional race have such a dismal, dismal record on jobs and the on the East End, which is a rematch piteconomy, which are number one in the minds of almost ting Rep. Consider This... This election year the issues key to women—such as reproductive rights, access to contraception and equal pay—are in the forefront as Democrats and Republicans battle for their ballots come November 6. More than half the population may be female but their electoral power is not equivalent to men’s—only six governors are women and 17 senators are women, to cite two figures. The economy may be the number one topic on voters’ minds, but lately the headlines have been raging about the so-called “war on women” as the left and right fight for this critical demographics’ support. Here’s a collage of commentary from both sides of the divide. Is there more to the rhetoric than meets the eye? Decide for yourself.

“Whether or not women can determine when and whether to have children is the single biggest element in whether we’re healthy or not, whether we’re educated or not, how long our life expectancy is, whether we can be active in the world or not.
This presidential election is a turning point. We will lose what we have gained if any Republican candidate were to win.” “Rep. Paul Ryan’s extreme anti-choice record shows just how serious a threat Mitt Romney’s presidency would be for women. Rep. Ryan has also repeatedly voted to defund family-planning programs and supported the ‘Let Women Die Bill,’ which would allow hospitals to refuse to provide a woman emergency, lifesaving abortion care, even if she could die without it. It comes as no surprise that Romney would choose a like-minded running mate who is just as out of touch with our nation’s values and priorities as he is.

A mentalist. A magician. A runway fashion show. All of this entertainment can be found at the newest “Ladies Night Out” events produced by George Santiago of West Islip. This “Ladies Night Out” has a lot more to offer than your usual happy hour or networking event with a portion of the proceeds from the suggested admission price being donated directly to the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition to help breast cancer patients in their everyday lives.
Young or Mature, Married or Single, White Collar, Blue Collar, Green Collar, Professional, Student or Retiree. Guys Who "Get It" are Role Models, Leaders and a Positive Influence in the Long Island community.
Genuine Long Island Men.
Guys Who "Get It" Since all of the organizations he approached thought it wasn’t a good fit because weddings are happy occasions, he started his own event, “Ladies Night Out.” “We then called some cancer coalitions to come into our bridal shows, but they didn’t think it was a good fit because they didn’t think people would want to hear about breast cancer during a happy event. So we started a different type of event, ‘Ladies Night Out,’ to help fight breast cancer on Long Island.” The “Ladies Night Out” events include entertainment, raffles, 40-50 assorted exhibitors that range from chair massages to mini makeovers, health and wellness demonstrations and much more. So far they’ve held five successful shows, all at the Islandia Marriott. Even though they don’t technically charge admission to the events, they do ask attendees to give some sort of donation instead. “We don’t ask for a suggested amount for a donation,” George says. “We’ve seen people give $10 and $500. It really is across the board. Everybody gives some kind of donation, we usually see $10, but it can be anything.” The donations go to fund the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition’s Lend a Helping Hand program. George has raised somewhere between $10,000 to $15,000 so far. He chose the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition because he liked the work they do and wanted to work with a nearby charity. Tradeshow Productions is located in North Babylon. Gina Marrone runs the Lend a Helping Hand program, and says that the money he raises goes to assisting women who have or are undergoing breast cancer treatment. “What we do is we provide them with services, depending on what their needs are, whether it’s housecleaning, transportation, prepared meals or medical co-pay assistance,” she says. She adds: “He always makes it really nice. It’s very important to him that it is a ladies’ event and that it always upholds a certain level of sophistication.” Lend a Helping Hand’s practice of helping current patients is what turned Santiago on to the organization in the first place. “When people do these fundraisers it mostly goes to research, but what happens to the people who are going through it at the moment and need help? I’m glad that’s what they do.” George also has the pleasure of meeting some of the women who are on the receiving end of the donations from “Ladies

GEORGE SANTIAGO
When Santiago left his job at Dynasty Limousines after six years to start his own business, Tradeshow Productions USA, he had no idea that he would use his business to help those with cancer. In fact, he didn’t know how any of it would work out. “I enjoyed Dynasty Limousines, and I enjoyed working with them, but I had to make a decision. Do I leave and open up my own business? And that’s what I decided, to go full speed ahead with Tradeshow Productions,” he says. Tradeshow Productions USA, was originally producing only bridal shows, but after George lost his mother to stomach cancer, and his father-in-law to lung cancer only six months after he was diagnosed, George and his wife Nina decided they wanted to host events where the proceeds went to local cancer organizations. “We decided that we wanted to somehow get involved in helping cancer charities,” he says. “It was something we always planned to do later on in life.”

He plans to host a show three times a year, in March, August and November, and hopes to one day branch out into Nassau County. For the future, Santiago wants to start holding events for children’s charities and for men with prostate cancer in addition to “Ladies Night Out.” “When we first started doing this, I didn’t realize how many people cancer affected. As you go around talking to people at the event, who was a survivor, who is in the midst of it, it seems to touch everyone, whether it be your own family or a friend,” George says. “Any type of cancer today, it’s just all over the place.”

who had a bilateral mastectomy last July and finished her chemo treatments on Dec. 31, 2011, advises having an MRI instead of a mammogram. “My mammogram did not find my cancer, I did,” she says. “My sonogram was negative. The needle aspiration of my lymph nodes was negative. Yet, the MRI showed abnormal change in both areas. As a doctor, I knew what I felt and knew something was not right, so I chose the MRI on my own. Request an MRI and if your doctor does not think it is necessary—then demand it!” Sam says that a few months after her mammogram, her lump grew and felt like a frozen pea. She was sent for a biopsy the day before Thanksgiving. She didn’t tell anyone except her boyfriend. That Monday, Samantha’s doctor called to give her the biopsy diagnosis. “You’re not driving are you?” she asked. That’s when “It became real,” Samantha says. “It was scary.” “What am I going to do about school?” was her first thought. Then, her family: “I’m going to ruin Christmas. I had to tell my Dad.” Sam told her nursing supervisor and they cried together, but she didn’t tell anyone else at school. “I thought I could ignore it and not deal with it,” she says. Sam tested positive for BRCA2—a gene associated with increased risks for breast cancer—with an aggressive tumor. She had “conservation” surgery on Dec. 13, 2011. When it was time for her second surgery, Sam says, “I felt nothing. I knew it was coming.” “I used to have nice big boobs,” she says. A friend told her, “They’re just tits, you can get new tits.” “When this is over, I’m going to be the Pam Anderson of breast cancer survivors,” Sam says. Following chemo, she underwent a double mastectomy, only missing three days of school and never a rotation. It’s a custom at the hospital that when you finish your last chemo treatment everyone is invited to ring a bell, announcing that you’re done with treatment. “I rang the crap out of my bell,” Sam says. She graduated magna cum laude and recently learned she passed her nursing boards and is now officially a registered nurse. But for the fact she can’t raise her arms higher than perpendicular to her body because of the mastectomy wounds, she would start working tomorrow. Sam is just one of the more than 200,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the United States. Now, she’s also one of the more than 2.5 million breast cancer survivors—living proof of the strides made against this disease, living proof that it is no longer definitively a death sentence. Hindenburg puts it into perspective. “What you have, I don’t have a cure for,” he says he tells his patients. “But I don’t have a cure for diabetes, either.”

HEALTH TRX Pumpkin Facial Peel
If your skin requires some pampering, all you need is 15 minutes and some pumpkin! Pumpkins contain high concentrations of vitamin A and C, potassium, zinc and beta-carotene that help skin recover from the stress of the hot summer. Not only is this peel a great way to naturally exfoliate your skin, it also gives you a healthy glow. The pumpkin-peel facial can treat a wide range of skin issues such as wrinkles, fine lines and acne. It can easily be made from home with our DIY recipe. You can use canned or cooked pureed pumpkin, soy milk or regular milk, honey for dry skin or, if you have oily skin, substitute the honey with apple cider vinegar. The recipe is simple: two teaspoons pumpkin, one-quarter teaspoon milk and a half-teaspoon of honey or apple cider vinegar. Mix together with a spoon and apply to your face with your fingers. Leave on for about 15 minutes. Then rinse with warm water.

The Skin Doctor By Dr. Joshua L. Fox
ACNE solutions Acne is the most common skin disorder, affecting nearly 50 million Americans. Almost everyone
has acne at some point in their lives. At our seven LI offices, we see a lot of frustration among our new patients who are suffering from acne. Some come with a sense of hopelessness and depression. It’s important to know that there are treatments that can help, thanks to science and new technologies. A “one-size-fits-all approach” does not work for acne. In the first line of therapy, prescription topical ointments may be prescribed. Based on the acne’s severity, stronger medications may be used next. Retinoids, including Retina A, Differi, and Tazorac all work by stopping pimples from forming under the surface of the skin. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) with aminolevulinic acid (ALA) has been shown to effectively treat acne. PDT works by using laser or light energy like IPL. Other laser and light therapies have become more common, as are chemical peels that destroy parts of the skin in a controlled way so that new skin can grow in its place. One of the most important things to remember is to stick with the treatment long enough to allow it to take effect. Sometimes that can take six to eight weeks. Perhaps most important, a patient should seek care promptly at the outset of acne to avoid any long-term negative effects of depression. Joshua L. Fox, MD is a leading authority in the field of dermatology, laser procedures and cosmetic surgery. He serves as a medical director of Advanced Dermatology PC, and the Center for Laser and Cosmetic Surgery, with seven locations throughout Long Island, Queens and Manhattan. TRX, short for Total Body Resistance, is a fitness craze created by a US Navy SEAL that targets your core by combining traditional exercises with suspension cables. For an intense TRX full-body workout, head over to Equinox in Roslyn and Woodbury for their 1-hour TRX Boot Camp. The workout includes cables that are attached to a wall so students can perform exercises in different positions using their own body weight. “Anyone can do it, young or old, deconditioned or an elite athlete. All you do is change the vector [the way you would stand holding the strap]. It works on your own body’s weight and your own resistance against gravity,” says Kristen James, area group fitness for Equinox Long Island. “It’s great because you can pack it up in your suitcase and take the strap with you. You can do it outside or hang it over your door. It’s very userfriendly. You’re working at your own ability and your own level.” Of course, you can try it at home, too, via TRXTraining.com.

Together, helping kids stay on the right track to health Kohl’s Active Kids Program As childhood obesity rates climb, an entire generation of children is at risk of growing up with chronic obesity-related health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, asthma and other conditions. One of the best gifts we can give our kids is to help them develop healthy exercise habits – today. As parents, we can help our children learn to make fitness choices. Kids have great ideas and want to try new things. Let them get involved in planning their exercise routine, and teach them to take ownership of their own good health!
Try some fun “get going” ideas from this healthy habits checklist:
Turn off the television and as a family act out your own sitcom. Or make it a song-and-dance show! Take the family to an indoor playground when it’s too cold to play outdoors. Dig into gardening! Plant a garden and assign each family member their own section to care for and maintain.
Be a role model for good health. Get moving, stay fit and be physically active, together!
Teach your kids to take the stairs instead of the elevator whenever possible. And practice what you preach!
Healthy eating goes hand-in-hand with fitness! For kid-friendly recipes you and your children will love – and love to prepare – visit: northshorelij.com/cohenandkohls

Many children want store-bought costumes to wear on Halloween, but the price tag is sometimes more than your budget will allow, especially if it’s only going to be worn once. We found an ideal solution where everyone gets what they want. Really cool costumes at affordable prices can be found at local consignment stores. Many of these costumes were originally sold at nearly 10 times the price. Check out these Halloween costumes at a price that won’t give you a fright!
running with the wolves
into the Halloween spirit. To make our Batty Bites, you’ll need: whole grain English muffins, a jar of pizza sauce, whole or part-skim mozzarella cheese (not grated!) and your favorite cookie cutter. We liked the bat pizza, but ghosts and pumpkin pizzas are fun, too! To assemble: split the muffins and top each half with about one tablespoon of pizza sauce, slice the cheese as thin as possible and cut your favorite shape with the cookie cutter. To make eyes, use a straw. Bake in the oven at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes, or until the cheese melts. Let cool slightly and BOO Appetite!

an enchanting glow in just two steps! You’ll need an ordinary mason jar and with a small paintbrush, splatter glow-in-the-dark paint on the inside of the jar . When finished, keep the jars in the sun all day (to “charge” them) and place them around your yard or on a windowsill for a fairytale glow at night. Be kind to the environment by using non-toxic glow-in-the-dark paint, available at Walmart stores. (Walmart.com)

Running with the Wolves is a Ronkonkoma-based nonprofit organization that rescues wolves and helps fund other wolf-rescue organizations. Because wolf pups are so cute and cuddly looking, many people believe they can adopt them and raise them like dogs, but they are often abandoned as they grow older. Teresa DeMaio, of Ronkonkoma, certified pet care specialist and wildlife handler, started Running with Wolves to help the rescued animals by funding sanctuaries for them around the country. She now has a rescue wolf of her own, Takoda, and has renamed her adopt-a-wolf program The Takoda Fund. “It costs over $300 a month just to feed him because we only use raw, organic meat,” DeMaio explains. “Takoda came to us a year ago as a pup, and he really is the main focus.” There are different levels for donations, which can be as low as $10. Donors receive a certificate, and depending on the amount, a stuffed animal of a wolf. She also holds a yearly Wolf Expo that raises money for Takoda and seven other sanctuaries across the country. This year the expo is Oct. 14 at the Sheraton LI Hotel’s Grand Ballroom in Hauppauge. For more information on the organization or the event call 631-737-9653 or visit RunningWithTheWolves.org.

Fit Fusion Interactive After School Program
Five days a week at Fit Fusion Interactive in Oyster Bay, students are in for a variety of lessons including self-defense, nutrition and team spirit, all while using interactive video game equipment and special kidfriendly magnetic machinery. Owner Don Hauner explains, “We have bikes hooked up to computer systems, where kids play video games or do research as they pedal.” What makes the equipment so unique is one must pedal at a certain speed deemed adequate by trainers to see the screen and continue playing or researching. One favored area is equipped with steppers, and kids can play PlayStation 3 together while stepping to power their joystick. The program costs $139 per child on a month-to-month membership basis. Long Island Hope for Youth works with children in foster care and in the juvenile justice system who move frequently. Providing these kids with their very own suitcase gives them something they can call their own. “It’s about having a certain amount of dignity. Who wants to go from house to house in a garbage bag?” says Vonni Guthrie, director of development. “They get a piece of luggage that’s theirs until hopefully they find permanent housing.” Only new luggage is used. Playground Long Island is known for being a picturesque oasis away from the tall buildings of New York City. Even though much of the Island has been built up over the years, we still have some great parks and playgrounds where you can enjoy the outdoors. Since nothing feels better than a breath of fresh air, we decided to visit some of the parks to see which ones are the best. So grab the kids and a light jacket and head out to enjoy nature before the season turns too cold!
Eisenhower Park East Meadow
516-572-0348 Eisenhower Park is a whirlwind of activity. Available sports include golf, tennis, baseball, swimming, softball, soccer, football, basketball, a fitness trail, an outdoor roller-skating rink, a scenic lake and the Lakeside Theatre. Keep in mind, if you’re swimming, that the aquatic center is a bit pricey, especially for non-residents. Eisenhower also implemented a new adaptive playground in May 2012.
Cedar Creek Park Seaford
516-571-7470 Cedar Creek Park is a nice relaxing park near Jones Beach. It offers activities like softball, football, lacrosse, tee ball, tennis, handball, basketball, archery, tether cars, remote-control planes and biking. The park also has a designated dog-run area, archery range, Lufbery Aerodrome, tether-car race track, two turf fields, picnic areas, an outdoor roller-skating rink, two playgrounds and a 4.1-mile path with access to Jones Beach.
Hecksher Park
Huntington 631-351-3000 Hecksher is the ultimate playground park. Three softsurface, fenced-in playgrounds have everything from jungle gyms to a sandbox for little ones. Shaded picnic tables offer relief from the sun and a spot to rest, and the trail around the lake is a great place to become one with nature.

Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park
Northport Village Park Northport
631-261-7502 This scenic Northport park offers a nice walk or a picnic with a waterside view. The playground boasts multiple slides among other features. Frisbee, biking, skateboarding and unleashed dogs are prohibited. But it’s a nice romantic location that comes shaded with waterside benches, a boardwalk, nicely maintained cement picnic tables throughout the park and a boatyard offering small boat rentals until Oct. 31. The restrooms are clean. Check out their Halloween Hayride on Oct. 28.

Oyster Bay 516-624-6202 The park is only open to Town of Oyster Bay residents. It offers three playgrounds built on a soft material so tumbling kids don’t end up with scrapes all over. The park also has tennis, handball and basketball courts, a refreshment stand, two covered picnic areas, kayak racks and walking paths throughout.

Lake Ronkonkoma County Park
Lake Ronkonkoma 631-854-9699 This lakeside park boasts a large adaptive playground that is accessible to children with special needs. Lake Ronkonkoma also offers access to basketball, handball, and tennis courts as well as a baseball/softball field. Fresh-water fishing is available with the proper license and permits. The restrooms could use some TLC and there is no food concession, but parking is free during the weekdays. On the weekends it’s $3 for residents and $10 for non-residents.
Hoyt Farm and Nature Preserve Commack
631-543-7804 This cute little park is great for kids. It offers ample playground space and a shaded picnic area. But bring a tablecloth because the tables need some TLC. There are benches for parents to sit on as they keep an eye on their kids at play. If you’re looking to get some exercise, there’s a baseball field near the park entrance and scenic walking paths throughout. The Nature Center and Hoyt House Museum are open all year. Restrooms are fairly clean, but there’s no concession stand. Non-residents and those without proof of Smithtown residency must pay $7 to park.
Kyle Meier Moriches Athletic Complex Adaptive Playground Moriches Argyle Lake Babylon
631-785-6191 Argyle Lake Park is absolutely beautiful, but a limited number of activities are available. If you’re looking for a relaxing day in a very natural setting, this is the park for you. Situated in the heart of Babylon and bordering the marina, it features a scenic path around the lake for walking, running or biking and a small playground, plus a nearby sports field and fishing. Unfortunately it has no accessible restrooms or concession areas, but food shops and stores are within walking distance of the park.

Heritage Park
631-767-4354 This new playground was inspired by Kyle Meier, a Suffolk County child who, through his determination, has thrived despite his disabilities and has been an inspiration to other children and their families. Kyle’s grandmother, Debbie Metz, director of the Kyle Sports for Special Needs Program, was the catalyst for the funding and construction of this beautiful adaptive playground. (Photo: Brookhaven Town Councilman Dan Panico presenting a plaque naming the park in Kyle’s honor.)
Mount Sinai 631-509-0882 This park is great for children of all ages. Despite the fact that it’s smaller than other parks, Heritage has two playgrounds— one for toddlers up to age 5, and another for older kids that includes a rock wall. It also has ballfields, a walking/bike trail and community gardens boasting a small waterfall. The Heritage Center on the grounds offers classes, programs and events.

Wantagh Park
Wantagh 516-571-7460 Wantagh Park features many different attractions and skimps on none of them. The large playground areas are full of all the slides and swings a child could dream of, along with a maze that will keep the kids busy all afternoon. It also has six pools, concession facilities, court games like bocci and horseshoes, a fishing pier open year-round and a two-mile-long jogging course.

Words of Witness Film Shows a young female reporter’s struggles during Egypt’s revolution The footage is shaky as Heba Afify and her cameraman navigate the dark, ominous halls of the State Security headquarters. The public has stormed the building, searching for family and friends who disappeared by the hands of the government during Egypt’s revolution in February 2011, and the 22-year-old journalist is right in the thick of it. Words of Witness is an eye-opening documentary that follows the life of Heba, a young woman starting her career at one of the most crucial points of Egyptian history—after the fall of the Hosni Mubarak regime. Milieu got a chance to talk to Words of Witness director Mai Iskander. The 38-year-old Brooklyn resident stayed with family in Egypt during the filming of the documentary, and actually followed three female political activists in addition to Heba. Ultimately, she decided that she wanted to focus on Heba’s story alone. “I just felt like Heba was right in the middle of the action in what was going on in the country,” she said. “The film really was about Egypt at the time and it’s supposed to parallel the life of a woman, so I just felt like Heba’s story managed to do that the best.” The two often found themselves in dangerous situations during Heba’s assignments for the English edition of Egypt’s Independent newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm. In one scene viewers watch Heba maneuver through a crowded Tahrir Square sit-in, the same location where numerous female reporters from several different countries, including America, have been sexually assaulted since the start of the revolution. While no prisoners are found during the State Security storming, protesters do uncover thousands of files that the government has kept on its citizens. People call friends on their cell phones to let them know what’s in their file, while others search to find the file with their name on it. Throughout the raid a tense aura radiates off the screen—are the police around the corner of the cold, barren hallway? Will violence break out? Will they find evidence of the torturing and killing that is rumored to go on in this grim building?
This isn’t a thriller film, this is real life, and these are real people fighting for freedom. While Heba puts on a brave face and completes her assignments with a cool, collected professionalism, it’s no wonder that her mother disapproves of the events she’s covering and calls her frantically when she doesn’t return home by a certain time. “I can’t abide by the rules of being an Egyptian girl if I want to be a good reporter,” she states matter-offactly during the film. The power of social networking is also apparent during the film. Many protesters organized on Twitter and Facebook, and Heba uses it throughout the movie to post her stories, lament about her mother’s overprotectiveness, and tries to find family members of those who went missing during the 18-day revolution.
This isn’t a thriller film, this is real life, and these are real people fighting for freedom.

By the end of the film, Egyptians, including Heba’s own mother, excitedly commemorate voting in their first real election. But the country’s road to democracy has many bumps ahead of it, and the documentary ends with an air of uncertainty that still hangs over the nation. Mai said that her goal for the film was to show people what was really going on in Egypt. “People come and say, ‘I see a lot on the news, but I never really understood it so cohesively and from a personal point of view like I do in this film,’” she says. “That’s been one positive that I’ve been trying to get across. I think it’s a great representation of a young female who is also Muslim, because you don’t normally see that in the news.” The next step for Mai is to take the film around college campuses with Rock the Vote to show young people just how precious democracy is. “I want students to see how many people lost their lives for the right to vote, so that they’ll get out there and vote in November.” BY LINDSAY CHRIST Lindsay@MilieuLI.com september / october 2012

Rewards for smart financial moves may have been elusive in the past few months. But evidence that this is about to change begins to show. It’s about time!
SAGITTARIUS
November 22 to December 21
Things will quiet down more. Jupiter will reveal a favorable period for harmony in marriage and partnerships of all kinds. Don’t take your partner for granted.
CAPRICORN
December 22 to January 19
Friendships and finances may not gel. Stay emotionally close to friends but don’t constantly bother them with tales of your financial woes. The spiritual law of finance says this will soon pass.
AQUARIUS
January 20 to February 18
Take a no-nonsense approach to your work routine during this period. Detach yourself from highly emotional entanglements at work and stick to the business at hand. Be courteous but not overly friendly with co-workers.
PISCES
February 19 to March 20
Your love life gets a boost during this period. Don’t wait for romance to find you like you usually do. An assertive approach works best. Quality is just as important as quantity. Try not to waste your time with someone who is not really your type.
Aries
March 21 to April 19
Take advantage of the energy rush coming your way. Initiative and crisp decisions put you in the limelight at work. Don’t let outside activities take up all of your time.
TAURUS
April 20 to May 20
If you feel you have not been expressing your thoughts clearly and want to upgrade your language skills, your talents can turn this chore into a fun game. Children will be especially important to you at this time.
GEMINI
May 21 to June 20
Be careful of extreme reactions where family finances are concerned. You have a precise and logical mind but others with a stake in the action may not be willing to trust your judgment now.
CANCER
June 21 to July 22
Do not hesitate to make decisions during this period. You are highly regarded by those around you for your insight and perception. Although your personal charm flows naturally, don’t take yourself too seriously.
LEO
July 23 to August 22
Home is where your heart should be, especially if relatives need some words to the wise about how to express love. A young person can guide you into accepting what may be positive changes in your life.

Count the letters in your first name. If the number of letters is 6 or more, subtract 4. If the number is less than 6, add 3. The result is your key number. To find your fortune, start at the upper left-hand corner and check each one of your key numbers, left to right. Then read the message the letters under the checked figures spell out. september / october 2012
