Winter weather safety

The Hampton Roads, Virginia community is no stranger to inclement weather throughout the winter month. Rain, sleet, now and ice can be hazardous, especially for those unprepared to face them.

By following some tips from the 633rd Air Base Wing Safety Office, service members and their families can decrease their risk of falling victim to any cold weather mishaps.

“The biggest threat to personnel is underestimating winter weather, because cold temperatures can severely impact you very quickly,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Collin White, 633rd ABW SO occupational safety technician. “Organizations can experience higher mishap rates primarily due to different weather attributes.”

These tips can help protect service members and their families:

Fire safety • A portable heater can warm any room but left unattended can set ablaze an entire home. Always turn space heaters off when leaving the room and ensure it has tip-over protection, which turns the device off if it’s not upright.

• Keep heaters clean and have them inspected annually to safeguard from any electrical disasters.

• Keep a list of phone numbers for roadside assistance or emergency services readily available to speed up the process after a possible vehicle accident.

Protect: • Buckle up and obey traffic and safety laws.

• During inclement weather, personnel should drive slower and increase the distance between their vehicle and other automobiles to avoid accidents on potentially slippery roads.

Prevent Crashes: • Don’t drink and drive.

• Don’t text and drive.

• Don’t take drugs that can negatively impact responsiveness.

• Get plenty of rest to avoid fatigue.

JBLE Honors Gold Star Family Member

“I had never heard his voice before listening to the tapes, so every time he spoke, the squadron would tap me on the shoulder, until I could learn his voice.”

The Airman and Family Readiness Center, in accordance with the Gold Star Family Member installation access card initiative, honored U.S. Navy Commander Kerry Beasley as their first U.S. Air Force Gold Star Family Member at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., Jan. 9, 2019.

“It is our honor to celebrate the service of Maj. Wayne Brown II, Beasley’s father, by issuing the GSFM Defense Biometric Identification System card and GSFM lapel pin to Beasley,” said Marjorie SpatesPichon, Airman and Family Readiness Center, Team Lead.

When Beasley was 5-months-old her father was killed in action in July 1972 on his second deployment during the Vietnam War. While flying a night mission with the 497th Tactical Fighter Squadron,

U.S. Air Force Capt. Wayne G. Brown and his pilot, U.S. Air Force Lt. Gordan Tushek were struck by friendly fire. The accident caused them to eject and land in the mountainous area of northern South Vietnam.

According to an article written by Tushek, Wayne was on the ground in the valley on the other side of the mountain.

Because of the extent of Wayne’s injuries, the first rescue attempt was conducted for him.

“The attempt was not successful because of very strong winds and enemy ground fire,” Tushek said. “About two hours after the rescue attempt, I heard gunshots from the direction that I had last seen the Jolly Green rescue helicopter. I knew in my gut what that probably meant.”

Capt. Wayne G. Brown II, Missing in Action, July 17, 1972, has been since posthumously promoted to Major.

“I was 5-months-old and my parent’s only child, my mom and I were the legacy left behind,” Beasley said. “Now that my mother has passed, I am it, and my children will be the next generation.”

The Chief of Staff of the Air Force GSFM DBIDS card initiative launched May 15, 2017. Only available to Air Force GSFMs, the card gives the member access to local installation events and A&FRC services.

A GSFM is defined as a surviving immediate family member of those killed in action, terrorist attacks, or from injuries sustained in theater. The card was issued in a team effort by Air Force Families Forever, A&FRC, GSFM initiative and the 633rd Security Forces.

“You can see the joy in the Airman’s eyes, getting to honor this family with the first gold star DBIDS card here at Langley Air Force Base,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Scott Butte, 633rd Security Forces non-commissioned officer in charge Pass and I.D. “It truly was a team effort with all the organizations involved, making the Beasley family feel at home.”

The Air Force started this initiative to honor the sacrifices made by the fallen members, ensuring surviving AF GSFMs have access to obtain support.

According to Beasley the support she has received from Langley Air Force Base, the 497th TFS members, 37th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron

helicopter pilots, chaplain and members that knew her father have been the silver lining.

At one of the heritage events for the 497th TFS, the members sat behind Beasley as she listened to declassified flight recordings of her father ’s flying missions. That was the first time Beasley had heard her father ’s voice, so the squadron members would tap her on her shoulder each time he spoke, so she could learn to recognize it.

“That’s the legacy, that’s the pay off, being part of something bigger after an unspeakable tragedy and loss,” Beasley said. “You can still find that family and you don’t know what you are going to find, every year there is something else.”

U.S. and Qatar sign MOU reaffirming Qatar’s commitment to supporting U.S. military activities at Al Udeid Air Base

By DOD News Release The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) and the Ministry of Defense of the State of Qatar signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) concerning Qatar ’s support of DOD activities at Al Udeid Air Base (AUAB) during the second U.S.Qatar Strategic Dialogue in Doha, Qatar Jan. 13.

The MOU will help promote interoperability, support regional stability, and reaffirm the U.S.-Qatar defense relationship. It also represents a positive step towards the eventual formalization of Qatar ’s commitment to support sustainment costs and future infrastructure costs at AUAB, which the State of Qatar proposed at the first U.S.Qatar Strategic Dialogue in January 2018.

rahman Al Thani, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Michael Pompeo, U.S. Secretary of State, jointly witnessed the signing ceremony. The Principal Director for Middle East Policy in the Office of the U.S. Secretary of Defense Ms. Jennifer Zakriski and Brigadier General Fahad al-Sulaiti, Director of the International Military Cooperation Authority, General Headquarters, Qatar Armed Forces signed the MOU on behalf of their respective governments.

Separately, both the U.S. and Qatari delegations to the Strategic Dialogue hailed the many achievements in the bilateral military relationship in the past year, including joint exercises, U.S. ship visits to Doha, and the implementation of standard operating procedures designed to facilitate customs, immi-

gration, and operational processes that will deepen the security and military partnership.

Since 2003, Qatar has hosted U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and Special Operations Command (SOCCENT) Forward Headquarters and U.S. Air Forces Central Command (AFCENT) at AUAB, the largest U.S. military installation in the Middle East with over 11,000 U.S. and Coalition service members.

AUAB has served as the primary staging ground for most air operations in the campaign to defeat ISIS. The U.S. and the State of Qatar have had a longstanding and multifaceted bilateral military relationship which is guided by shared goals to combat terrorism, deter criminality in the Arabian Gulf and promote regional security and stability.

Goldfein highlights professionalism, accomplishments of Airmen during trip to the Middle East, Southwest Asia

No matter the year or circumstance, the Middle East and Southwest Asia are challenging places for Airmen deployed there.

Yet, during an extended trip to Jordan, Qatar, Iraq, Turkey and Afghanistan over the Christmas holiday, Chief of Staff of the Air Force Gen. David L. Goldfein found another – but different – consistent truth: an unblinking focus on the mission coupled with dedication and professionalism.

“I saw total commitment to mission,” Goldfein said the day after returning from the 12-day trip. “I expected that because that is what the Air Force is and it’s how we always are. I also saw onthe-ground innovation that is central to who we are as an Air Force.

“I found master sergeants and tech sergeants finding ways to flatten the command structure so decisions could be made quicker,” Goldfein said. “I found that morale was high; I didn’t find any kind of wavering in terms of mission or purpose. It never ceases to

impress me.”

Goldfein’s trip to the U.S. Air Forces Central Command’s area of responsibility was a mostly informative, rejuvenating trip that mixed high-level meetings with assorted senior government and military officials with face-to-face interactions with Airmen.

In Jordan, he met with King Adjullah, reaffirming the strong security cooperation that has defined the relationship between the two countries. His visit to Qatar included a meeting with the country’s armed forces Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Ghanim bin Shaheen al-Ghanim, with whom he discussed a range of topics, including ways to maintain a partnership and strategic interests.

In Iraq, Goldfein held discussions with Air Force Lt. Gen. Paul J. LaCamera and Maj. Gen. Chad P. Franks, commander and deputy commander of Combined Joint Task Force Inherent Resolve, and throughout many stops, he was accompanied by Lt. Gen. Joseph T. Guastella, AFCENT commander – a position Goldfein himself once held.

He was joined, as is often the case, by Chief Master Sgt of the Air Force, Kaleth O. Wright.

In broad strokes, the trip was similar to others he routinely takes to locations both domestic and foreign.

But this trip also was infused with additional features not always present. It came amid the resignation of Secretary of Defense James Mattis, the decision

by President Trump to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria and Afghanistan and a debate back home about the motives, meaning and consequences of those actions.

Even with those unexpected elements, the focus of the trip was primarily to see and recognize the efforts of Airmen and get a close-up view of their circumstances. At every location, Goldfein acknowledged outstanding performances

by Airmen of all ranks.

While in Afghanistan, for example, he highlighted the contributions of security forces Airmen. He also spent time visiting the 83rd Expeditionary Rescue Squadron, a joint unit that combines highly-trained pararescuemen with U.S. Army crews all transported in an Army CH-47 Chinook.

“Your families are waking up at home, celebrating the holidays with all their family traditions,” Goldfein said during the stop in Qatar.

Participants rucked for six miles, stopping at every mile marker to share memories of lives lost that day three years ago. Not all who gathered knew them personally, but for many, they were dear friends.

There were moments of solemnity throughout the march, but some memories meant former friends could not hold back the smiles.

As Edwards recounted stories of Lemm commandeering an Army guidon and smearing peanut butter on steering wheels, the crowd could not help but laugh.

Maura Rust, 633rd SFS resource advisor, chuckled as she shared memories of Cinco’s ‘yeah bro’ attitude and the things he loved.

“Cinco was a defender first. He loved his family, the Air Force and his car,” Rust said. “He had this little souped-up blue Subaru. He loved that car more than anything. He was super funny, soft spoken, kind and did amazing things while I knew him.”

But through it all, the one thing that resonated with every story was the dedication each member brought to the table.

“Adrianna was the kind of leader that without saying too much, she made you want to be a better person; the kind of leader that without saying too much, makes you want to make them proud of you,” said Special Agent Maj. Hubert Lesniak, AFOSI Detachment 201 commander. “She was the kind of person I wake up in the morning and aspire to be myself.”

With every memory shared, the lives that were touched in the crowd could be seen.

Edwards said the most impressive thing he has seen in his career was going to Lemm’s funeral in New York City, watching the New York Police Department shut down the city of Manhattan for the procession and seeing Lemm’s son, on the shoulders of his partner, hold a salute for his father as he was brought out of the cathedral.

“We honor those we’ve lost best by celebrating their legacy and memory,” Rust said. “We don’t know them all, but we owe them all.”

The Air Force is calling for submissions from start-ups and small businesses as it seeks to rapidly invest up to $40 million at Air Force Pitch Day as part of a larger rapid contracting effort.

Air Force Pitch Day is designed as a fast-track program to put companies on one-page contracts and same-day awards with the swipe of a government credit card. The opportunity affords small businesses access to the military market as well as non-dilutive capital, which is funding that does not require a company to share its ownership.

The event is modeled after commercial investment pitch competitions to deliver a faster, smarter approach to compete for ideas in the accelerating technology ecosystem. The process is a major departure from the lengthy contractual processes typically expected of the military.

“Mind-blowing ideas are being birthed in U.S. start-up companies, but the Pentagon largely misses out on them,” said Dr. Will Roper, Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics.

“We have to do business at the speed of ideas so we can both inspire and accelerate start-up creativity towards national security challenges. The only

Gen. Townsend emphasizes importance of recruiting, maintaining professional, lethal force

A professional force that is lethal and representative of the American population is a vital strategic asset, and evolving to recruit and maintain that smart, fit, lethal all-volunteer Army is the most important thing that the Army’s Training and Doctrine Command is working on, said TRADOC commander Gen. Stephen Townsend in remarks at a recent Association of the U.S. Army event in Arlington, Va. To build a modern force to compete with near-peer adversaries in a Multi-Domain operations environment, Townsend said, TRADOC must evolve its talent management efforts into a 21st century high-tech digital talent acquisition model. He said to do that will require modernizing recruiting, exploring

new methods, ideas and incentives, and finding out what the people the Army aims to attract want in a career, and developing ways to provide it that the “standard...GI-issue career management system doesn’t offer.”

He used Army cyber as an example.

“Cyber is a growth industry, and very much so in the Army, and we are doing different things to attract folks into the cyber field and we are being successful at it,” Townsend said. “But at the same time it’s growing, and we’ve got to continue to be successful at attracting people.”

The general pointed to successful Army efforts to recruit for cyber and other specialties that may be expanded to more career fields. These include the cyber direct commissioning program to bring qualified civilian applicants into the Army as cyber officers, and the Army

New email survey aims to gauge Army housing quality

Residents of Family housing owned and leased by the Army can again rate the quality of their housing and housing services.

Administered by CEL & Associates Inc., the survey was emailed to approximately 10,000 residents living in Army-owned and Army-leased housing worldwide on Jan. 15, from ArmyHousingSurvey@celassociates. com.

The survey’s purpose is to receive firsthand accounts of what Soldiers and Families find important when living in Army-owned on-post and leased Family housing.

The housing survey is used to identify areas in housing operations that are successful or need improvement,

where funding could have the most effect and are identified as top priorities to residents, and ascertain areas of success for the garrison housing office, according to Lt. Gen. Gwen Bingham, Army Assistant Chief of Staff for Installation Management.

“Your feedback about your experiences while residing in Army-owned or leased housing is critical to shaping the future housing and services provided by the Army,” Bingham said.

CEL & Associates emailed an initial housing survey in 2018 to 9,957 residents living in Army Family housing, with 2,025 residents responding (a rate of 20.3 percent). Army housing officials want to increase participation in the 2019 survey.

The Army wants maximum outreach and participation to measure residents’ satisfaction with housing accommodations, as well as the services they received from the Army Housing Office.

Army recruiter applies lifesaver training after active shooter incident

Savannah VanHook celebrated her fourth birthday Jan. 13, 2019, by visiting Claire’s at the Fashion Place mall, Murray, Utah, with her parents to pierce her ears — something she’s been asking her mother and father for over five months.

It stung, but she seemed proud of her freshly-pierced ears.

The family headed to the food court when something entirely different pierced her ears: The sound of four gunshots ringing throughout the mall.

Savannah’s father, Sgt. Marshall VanHook, a recruiter with the Herriman U.S. Army Recruiting Station, recognized the sound immediately and directed his daughter and wife, Sarah, into a T-Mobile store to take cover.

Vanhook then ran toward the commotion.

“I saw the flash, and I heard the shots. I knew immediately what it was; it’s very distinctive,” recalled Vanhook. “My first response was to make sure my family was taken care of …

And then it was just a matter of ‘I need to stop this before it gets to my family,’ so I took off.

I ran towards where I thought the threat was at. While I was running there really were no thoughts other than ‘take care of business.’”

Vanhook ran through the mall and made his way outside in an attempt to see the shooter to get a description, he explained.

“I got out to the parking lot and it was a bit of chaos, people were running and I had no idea where they went,” he said. “I

just came back and that’s where I saw the two victims.”

The two victims, an adult male and adult female, were starting to fall to the ground. He ended his search for the gunmen and jumped into action to assist saving lives.

“It was just a matter of getting to work,” said Vanhook.

A mobile phone video from a fellow shoppers captured his next actions. VanHook removed his belt and created a makeshift tourniquet above the woman’s visible gunshot wound. Keeping a calm disposition, he directed an observer to use her scarf to apply direct pressure to the leg injury while he moved on to assess the man’s condition.

Vanhook has served in the U.S. Army Reserve for nine years. Before joining the Herriman recruiting team four months ago, he served as a civil affairs specialist with the 321st Civil Affairs Brigade. There, he received first aid response training, including Combat Lifesaver in 2014.

“Because of the Army, it instilled something in me to react in danger and not to flee from it,” explained VanHook.

Combat Lifesaver Course is the next level of first aid training after Army Basic Training Course. It provides in-depth training on responding to arterial bleeding, blocked airways, trauma, chest wounds and other battlefield injuries. The course was presented as realistically as possible, making it effective and easier to apply in a real scenario, explained VanHook.

“You go over [the training] and over it. It’s just a matter

of muscle memory,” he said.

“There really wasn’t thought. It was action.”

Although VanHook doesn’t consider himself a hero, his leaders feel he has represented himself and the Army well.

“His actions definitely, I think, were heroic,” said Lt. Col. Carl D. Whitman, commander of the U.S. Army Recruiting Battalion (Salt Lake City). “Most people don’t normally run to the sound of the guns, if you will… but he’s a Soldier and went into action as Soldiers do. We’re welltrained. His training and that mindset took over.”

“A lot of folks out there may call him or other Soldiers that do that a hero, but I think those of us in uniform don’t see ourselves that way, and I know he doesn’t, but definitely his actions were heroic,” Whitman said. “His actions resulted in saving a couple people’s lives.”

VanHook explained after everything that occurred, his family is doing well but it all seems surreal.

“It doesn’t feel real,” he said.

“It makes me angry. I’m a little angry that something like that happened. It was my daughter ’s birthday and it kind of messed it up. We had plans that night and because of the incident, it kind of got put on hold.”

He explained his wife was scared to leave the house following the shooting, but now they are working together to get back to normal life. His daughter Savannah, too young to realize the weight of the incident, he said, described the evening as ‘not how she wanted to spend her birthday.’

Pharmacist Cough and Cold Clinic

Pharmacy hours expanded

Effective immediately, the hours of operation for the Langley Hospital and Satellite Pharmacies will expand to better serve patients. The Hospital Outpatient Pharmacy will now open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Satellite Pharmacy located at the Air Force Base Exchange will now be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Durand Entry Control Facility (NASA gate) changes

Security Forces personnel will no longer man the Durand Entry Control Facility (NASA Gate). Personnel will still have their credentials checked by guards at the main NASA gate, however, their credentials will not be checked again at the Durand Entry Control Facility. NASA guards will still man their side of the Durand Entry Control Facility and will only allow CAC holders (no dependent ID cards) to enter NASA property. Additionally, no commercial vehicles are allowed access to NASA property. The Durand Entry Control Facility hours are from 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Life lessons over lunch workplace study

Join the new Life Lessons over Lunch the first and third Thursdays of the month from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in the 633rd Mission Support Group Conference Room. The Langley Chapel offers this marketplace initiative where participants meet on a regular basis to view a DVD message over lunch, providing a unique opportunity for participants to enter an environment in the workplace where they can consider relevant insights around personal and professional challenges. The principles are presented from a biblical perspective but are nondenominational and open to all active-duty service members and lunch provided is free. Air Force Reserve hosts Palace Front-Palace Chase informational sessions

The Air Force Reserve will host Palace Front-Palace Chase informational sessions the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month at 10 a.m., in the 633rd Force Support Squadron auditorium, building 15 in Wing B, room 203. Palace Front is available to Airmen within 180 days of their projected separation date.

Palace Chase is reserved for Airmen over 180 days from separation who are interested in separating from Active Duty early.
