Thinking about college? You already have the discipline it takes to pursue higher education.

From big universities to small colleges, you have plenty of options and each has something unique to offer. Here’s how to compare your college options and find the right institution for your education goals.

THINGS TO CONSIDER ABOUT COLLEGE Look beyond the beautiful lawns and libraries in all those college brochures. You need to balance the cost and logistics of going to school with what you want to accomplish with your degree. There’s a right fit for you and your priorities.

• Tuition and costs: While most schools offer tuition assistance to service members, certain institutions can be more affordable, like in-state or public universities. Private schools can sometimes be costly. To reduce the amount of debt you graduate with, research each school’s tuition and financial aid offerings carefully.

• Courses and programs: Some schools specialize in certain areas of study, such as engineering or nursing. If you have a specific area of focus that you want to pursue, narrow down your choices to schools with those programs. If you’re considering graduate school or a higher professional degree, look into which schools offer those specific fields of study to help you make the next transition to graduate school.

• Location: Choosing a nearby state school or local private college allows you to stay in your current location and commute from home to class. By

enrolling in evening or weekend classes you could continue to work or maintain your status in the services.

HOW TO CHOOSE Once you know what your college goals are, these tools can help you find the right fit for your needs.

• The College Navigator lets you search through over 7,000 schools. Compare location, tuition, courses and financial aid information for universities and colleges nationwide. You can even save your searches to a spreadsheet to revisit and revise your list.

• The Department of Defense’s Tuition Assistance program provides information on tuition costs at over 2,600 schools

that are eligible to receive military tuition assistance. Compare costs, fees, grants, GI Bill® and other financial aid opportunities.

• Search the Department of Defense’s Voluntary Education Memorandum of Understanding site to see which schools are participating in the federal tuition assistance program.

POST-9/11 GI BILL EDUCATION BENEFITS TRANSFER DEADLINE EXTENDED FOR MEMBERS WITH 16 YEARS OF SERVICE From Chief of Naval Personnel Public Affairs Navy.mil

The deadline for Sailors who have over 16 years of service to transfer their Post-9/11 GI Bill education benefits to dependents has been extended to Jan. 12, 2020 based on recently revised guidance issued by the Department of Defense (DoD).

NAVADMIN 020/19 announced DoD’s exception to policy for enlisted and officers who cannot obligate for four more years due to statute or service regulations expires July 11, 2019.

Members who will be ineligible for the Transfer of Education Benefits (TEB) after July 11, 2019 include: • Enlisted members within four years of the high year tenure gate for their current pay grade • Officers within four years of the statutory limit for their current rank • Members in a limited duty status or undergoing medical or physical evaluation board processing and found not fit for duty All Sailors applying or reapplying for TEB who have not previously completed the online self-service Statement of Understanding must first complete

it at the MyNavy Education website at https://myeducation.netc.navy.mil/webta/home.html#nbb.

Once members complete the Statement of Understanding, they will receive a link to go to MilConnect to submit their benefits transfer request.

Sailors will require a four-year service obligation in order to transfer benefits.

JOB FAIR SUCCESS STRATEGIES From Military OneSource

Job fairs are a great opportunity to network and be proactive in the employment process.

In order to make the most of these opportunities, set realistic expectations for what you hope to achieve. Prepare for the job fair like you would for an interview, have a plan for when you arrive, make a good impression with the recruiters and be sure to follow up with any connections you make.

PREPARE • Research. The week prior to a job fair, find out which companies are participating and learn more about them. What are some interesting things the company is currently working on? Does the company have new leadership or a new product?

These tidbits can be used as conversation starters

that will impress a recruiter and possibly open the door to a new opportunity for you.

• Dress for an interview. Job fairs typically involve on-the-spot interviews, so present yourself as you would for any other kind of interview. A suit is most appropriate, even if you're applying for a technical job. It's always better to be overdressed than underdressed.

• Prepare. For your top employment choices, consider preparing folders that include your resume, cover letter, recommendations and appropriate work samples.

• Carry plenty of business cards.

Give the business cards to recruiters and other job seekers you meet. They need not be expensive or fancy. A simple design will do. Make sure they contain your

name and contact information: phone number, email and address.

• Organize. You may want to carry a portfolio or clipboard to easily manage and collect information. Be sure to have a pen for taking notes.

• Relax, breathe and smile. Do your best to make a strong first impression.

• Walk around. Get the lay of the land, see where your top companies are located and plan your connection strategy.

• Network. Talk to other job seekers and ask questions. Find out what types of positions they're seeking, and tell them a little about yourself. You never know who they might know, or if you might be able to help them with an introduction.

Have a list of top companies you really want to visit and check them off as you go. This will keep you from introducing yourself to the same recruiter twice by accident. Listen to the "interviews" in front of you to get an idea what to expect and develop questions based on what you hear.

SPEAKING TO RECRUITERS • Connect. Make eye contact, smile, state your name and shake her or his hand. Use a prepared elevator speech - a 10-second summary of your bio, your skills and your achievements. Make sure to rehearse the speech until it becomes comfortable.

• Listen. Pay attention, respond to questions and ask for more information. When appropriate, hand your resume to the recruiter and pause for them to do a quick review. Be prepared for questions about specific examples of your experience.

• Keep it brief. Recruiters are typically swamped, so be mindful that your conversation

may be limited to a few minutes. If appropriate, ask questions about next steps, applicant qualifications or any suggestions they may have for you.

• Get recruiter contact information. Request a business card, and if one is not available, ask the recruiter for their email address. Conclude the conversation by thanking them for their time.

• Step aside. Make time to write conversation notes before you move on to the next recruiter. If the previous recruiter mentioned she went to Florida State, capture that information. If she told you the company will hire for your desired position soon, write it down. Summarize your job fair experiences immediately in order to take full advantage of the event.

FOLLOW UP • Call or email. After a few days, call or send an email, thanking the recruiters for their time and the information they provided. If you send an email to the recruiter who mentioned she went to Florida State, it is appropriate to write, "I'm the administra-

tive assistant at the job fair who discussed Florida State with you." That reminder could help her recall the conversation. Just taking the time to follow up will separate you from many job fair attendees.

• Stay in contact. If the recruiter responds back to you, stay in contact. Keep an eye open for articles about their organization or industry and don't hesitate to forward them on with a note. If you see the perfect job for you in their organization, and you're qualified, apply for the position and then email the recruiter and let him or her know you applied.

• Build your network. If you connected with other job seekers and traded contact information, you should follow up with them as well. You never know when they might have a job prospect for you, or vice versa.

The Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) announced March 20 that the Navy, Marine Corps, Army and Coast Guard are moving to one standard academic transcript to reflect military academic credit recommendations.

The Sailor Marine Corps American Council on Education Registry Transcript (SMART), the Army American Council on Education Registry Transcript System (AARTS) and the Coast Guard Institute (CGI), were aligned to implement one collaborative transcript program, now called the Joint Services Transcript (JST). With this collaboration, service members and veterans have one officially recognized military transcript.

The JST is now the official transcript tool for Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Coast Guard personnel that validates and documents the recommended college credits for professional military education, training courses and occupational experience of service members and veterans. This unified and standardized document makes it easier for institutions to review and articulate these credits as appropriate to service members and veterans degree programs.

"Having a single officially-recognized military transcript makes it significantly easier for colleges and universities to assess potential credits for service members," said DANTES Director Dr. Carol Berry. Having worked in the banking industry for more than 25 years and in his 30th year with the U.S. Army, Jerry Quinn is an example of someone who has maximized his military leadership skills in the corporate world. SAINT LEO UNIVERSITY RANKED AS BEST VALUE IN SOUTH FOR 2020 BY U.S. NEWS From Saint Leo University

Earns Top Rankings in Best Regional University, Best for Veterans, Campus Ethnic Diversity Saint Leo University (www.saintleo.edu) was ranked as one of the best regional universities and best values in higher education in the South in 2020 U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges rankings, which was released September 9.

Among regional universities in the South, Saint Leo ranked 25th, up from its 47th place ranking last year. Saint Leo made another impressive jump, moving up to fifth place from 14th last year among Best Value Schools in the South.

The university also bested last year’s ranking and was named a Best for Veterans School among southern regional universities and tied for No. 14 with

Christian Brothers University (TN).

Last year’s rank was 31st.

Saint Leo’s diversity was noted by U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges, as the university ranked fourth for international students and seventh for campus ethnic diversity among regional universities in the South.

In a new category this year, Saint Leo was named to the Top Performers on Social Mobility in Southern Regional Universities list, tying for No. 10 with Columbia College (SC).

Those schools included in the regional universities category offer a full range of undergraduate programs and offer graduate programs at the master’s level, according to U.S. News; although,

they offer few if any doctoral programs.

With its fourth place ranking for ethnic diversity, Saint Leo officials hope college-bound students who believe studying with people of different racial and ethnic backgrounds is important will want to consider the university when selecting a school.
