an you believe it is already February in the New Year? There is the old saying “time flies when you are having fun� and that should hold true when you are raising a family. That is what we hope to do here as we put together each edition of Coastal Carolina Parent. In some small way we will endeavor to help you have some fun with the children along with providing some of the information that is out there to assist parents.

Valentines Day is fast approaching and spring is around the corner. Many of our local military families have loved ones returning from service and that is truly something to look forward to. Perhaps you will be looking for something special to do with the family.

Encouraging Kids to Live a More Active Lifestyle Today’s kids often forgo baseball or tag for more sedentary fare like video games or surfing the Internet.

Though it can be difficult to get kids off the couch, there are ways parents can help their kids embrace a more active lifestyle, which can have benefits now and down the road.

Make it a team effort Parents who are concerned their kids aren’t getting enough daily exercise should ask themselves if they’re getting enough exercise themselves. A good way to encourage kids is to join them.

Make daily physical activity a team effort. Kids don’t have to join Mom and Dad at the gym. Instead, go for a nightly walk after dinner, or make time to play catch in the yard. Parents who exercise every day are much more likely to have kids who exercise daily.

Minimize television time The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends older kids watch no more than two hours of television per day. But as any parent knows, most kids average

more than two hours of television per day. To decrease tube time, parents can take televisions out of their kids’ bedrooms, instead putting televisions only in the common rooms which will also allow parents to more closely monitor what their kids are watching.

Encourage extracurricular activities While parents might find it hard to believe, today’s kids still get bored.

Boredom might be contributing to sedentary lifestyles. To combat boredom, parents should encourage extracurricular activities that get kids off the couch.

Whether it’s participating in team sports, joining the local or school theater program or even getting a job, parents should encourage kids to do more after school than come home and turn on the television or play video games.

Emphasize activity not exercise Many adults associate exercise with going to the gym or running on the treadmill, both of which are tough to

get excited about.

Kids might be equally indifferent to exercise. Instead of emphasizing exercise, encourage kids to be active. Being active doesn’t have to mean playing a sport or doing calisthenics. Instead, an active lifestyle is one that’s not spent idling the hours away lounging.

Express interest in kids’ activities Parents should express interest in their kids’ activities. When parents express an interest in their kids’ activities, kids are more likely to embrace those activities, something that’s especially beneficial if the activities in question are ones that get kids off the couch.

Choosing a Caretaker

for your Kids

Parents make many important decisions with regards to their children.

One of those decisions that ranks among the most important is choosing a caretaker for your children. Today’s families typicall have a dual income.

As a result, children are often left in the care of others, and who parents choose can be an agonizing decision. However, there are steps parents can take to ensure they make the right decision.

When interviewing prospecting caretakers, observe how they interact with your child, and how your child interacts with them. The caretakerchild relationship is a two-way street, so weight each of these interactions equally.

You aren’t the only parent who needs a caretaker or babysitter, so ask friends and relatives if they have anyone they can recommend. It might not hurt to ask coworkers, either, as they likely have a similar work schedule as you and therefore might be able to recommend someone who’s familiar with your schedule and make the transition as smooth as possible.

Regardless of how comfortable you are with your decision once you’ve made it, you are still going to have some concern in the back of your mind as to what’s going on with your child at any given moment.

Drop in unannounced to see just how things are going with the caretaker and your child when the caretaker isn’t expecting you. If things are going well, this will help relieve some of the fears or concerns you might have.

If kids are old enough to

respond, ask them what they think of their new babysitter or caretaker. Kids are often brutally honest, so you might get the most accurate depiction of their time with the caretaker directly from them.

Never hire a caretaker or babysitter who does not come with references. And don’t take the references on the applicant’s word. Call each reference and ask any questions you might have. The references no doubt are aware thay are being used, and should not have a problem asnwering your questions. After all, they are parents, too.

Many babysitter applicants will likely be on the younger side, either in high school or in college. Ask any such applicants about their own families, specifically whether or not they have any younger siblings whom they were trusted to care for.

As for older applicants, ask them if they have any children of their own, and whether or not their children are grown up. Many parents want their children to be the sole focus of the caretaker’s attention, so be sure to ask if that attention is to be shared with the caretaker’s own children.

While making a decision with regard to your child’s caretaker can be tough, steps can be taken to make the process less stressful and one you are more comfortable with.

4 quick steps to get you on the right track Story by Ena Sellers It is not easy being a teen, nor is easy to be the parent of one. Here are a few tips to help you survive this difficult stage.

Don’t expect perfection Remember teens are not perfect and like you, they have their own strengths and weaknesses. Don’t expect them to be an improved version of you. If you become over picky about their weaknesses, they will only pull away from you. Work on one behavior at a time, don’t try to change everything all at once.

Being a parent who thinks their kid is perfect, will only give your teen a false sense of entitlement. If your teen makes a mistake don’t sit back and say “I told you so.” Give them a hug, dry their tears and let them know they are important to you.

Actions speak louder than words Listen to your kids, even if you are busy.

Always set time aside to listen to them.

Don’t listen while doing something else, otherwise they will feel like you don’t care. Each kid needs to have their one-onone time to feel loved and appreciated.

Remember that even a seemingly harmless comment from you can make your teen feel misunderstood, angry or even hurt. Listen to them and give them your undivided attention. Remember their bodies are going through all sorts of

hormonal changes.

Give them space Be there for them but don’t hover.

Parents’ natural fear of their children messing up tends to make us over protective, but the truth of the matter is that they will make mistakes sometimes.

It is ok. Share your experiences, your mistakes and what you learned from them so they can make informed decisions if they ever find themselves in a similar situation. Don’t force them to share with you. Give your advice when asked. If you nag excessively they will clam up.

Be a cool mom Despite what you may think, being a cool mom does not mean ignoring bad behavior, dressing like a teen or learning the lingo to text your teen’s best friends.

Been a cool mom means remembering how you felt when you were that age.

Teens need parents not more friends.

Stand on the sidelines, remain strong, yet comforting and your teen will appreciate you more. Don’t stop disciplining because you are afraid they will hate you.

One day when they have their own teens, they will be grateful for all you did.

Valentine’s Day Party

alentine’s Day is a time for adult couples to show their affection. But Valentine’s Day is a fun time for kids, too. Kids love handing out and receiving Valentine’s Day cards, and parents enjoy seeing their kids’ crushes.

Another Valentine’s Day tradition kids enjoy is the annual Valentine’s Day party.

Parents hosting the party this year can make the most of their holiday party with the following tips. kids make the invitations Kids will get a kick out of making Valentine’s Day invitations for all their friends. Tools of the trade include construction paper, glitter, stickers, and any other accessories kids might feel are necessary. Parents who want to go the extra mile can take their kids around the neighborhood to hand deliver the invitations to their friends.

Go big with balloons No kids party is complete without Mon-Sat: 10aM-7pM

balloons, and a Valentine’s Day party should include pink, red and white balloons. If time permits, create an archway of balloons at the front door or tie balloons to the mailbox so other parents know where to drop the kids off.

Don’t forget sweets Kids might have ulterior motives for enjoying Valentine’s Day that go beyond giving and receiving valentines.

Candy and cupcakes are as much a part of Valentine’s Day for kids as they are for adults. Chocolate and cupcakes are favorites for kids and adults alike on Valentine’s Day, so be sure to have some on hand for the party.

Host themed games Instead of standard fare like “Pin the Tail On the Donkey,” spice things up for Valentine’s Day with a few games with a Valentine’s Day theme. If the weather permits, host a Valentine’s scavenger hunt in the backyard. Include prizes like Valentine’s stickers and, of course,

chocolate. If t h e weather is too cold for a scavenger hunt, plan other activities that can be done indoors. This can include some dancing to kids’ favorite music or even letting kids decorate the house themselves with Valentine’s themed decorations they made at the party.

Accessorize For the party, purchase heart-shaped plates and red, pink or white utensils for the kids to eat with.

For dessert, serve up a heart-shaped chocolate cake.

Easy Crafts to make with

Preschoolers Story by Jessie Heath

Preschoolers are wiggly. They like to run and jump and they have a hard time sitting still.

When I was an assistant teacher in a classroom full of threeyear-old’s, I quickly found out, as I was scrubbing crayon off the floor and tabletop later that night, that it takes more than just some crayons and white paper to please them. Here are some easy crafts to do with the youngest members of your household.

Decorated coffee cup A hand-painted coffee cup can make a great gift for almost anybody. You can buy white coffee cups at the dollar store.

Pick up a few different colors of acrylic paint and some gloss finishing spray at your local crafts store. Before you set your little one loose with a paint brush, wash your coffee cup with warm water and let it air dry.

Once the cup is dry, let your

kids go to town, creating their own masterpiece on this reusable and unique canvas. Once they are satisfied with their coffee cup art, allow the paint to dry without interruption.

This process can take up to 48 hours, depending on how much paint was used.

When your paint has dried, apply the clear coat or gloss finish.

This will protect the paint on your cup from chipping or disappearing in the dishwasher. This also gives your coffee cup and nice shine to it, which will enhance whatever

your children have decided to paint on it.

Stencil Wall Hanging A homemade wall hanging, using carpet squares, acrylic paint and your favorite stencil, is an easy and fun way to let your child help you decorate your home without breaking the bank.

“I did this with my preschool class,” said Linda Heath, a preschool teacher with more than 20 years of experience in coming up with unique crafts to do with her students. “You can buy carpet squares at the dollar store. We painted the hands of

our students and pressed them down into the carpet square to make their handprints.”

This is a good opportunity to let your kids be creative on a blank canvas. Blank carpet squares are also a good opportunity for children to experiment with different textures, since the amount of paint needed will be more than what you would normally use on a piece of paper.

There are enough unique craft ideas for parents to have a new craft every day of the year. Don’t let your child become bored by sitting and coloring. Look for easy crafts that you can do together.

Most of them don’t take much time to put together, but the memories you make while spending time with your preschooler will last you for years to come.

Children’s oral care is something parents are concerned about year-round, but there are several times during the year when oral care is especially important. Halloween, the winter holidays, Valentine’s Day and Easter are all large candy-eating times in the year, making it essential to take the time now to teach children the importance of maintaining good oral health.

“Tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease, so it’s important to teach children effective brushing habits, especially around the holidays, when children are consuming more sweets than usual,” says dentist and mom Dr. Jennifer Salzer.

Oral care isn’t usually a top priority for children, which is why it is so important for parents to get involved and teach children the importance of proper oral care early on. To make oral care

more fun for children, Dr. Salzer offers some of her best tips: Parents should brush their teeth with their child to set a good example. It also helps children to learn by watching and imitating their parent.

Sing your child’s favorite song, like “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” or play a song from their favorite singer for the two minutes while they are brushing their teeth.

Give your child a toothbrush designed to appeal to a toddler who is learning to brush and whose baby teeth are growing in. For younger children, when their first teeth begin to appear, parents should brush teeth using a child-sized, softbristled toothbrush.

It’s important that children two and older use fluoridated toothpaste to help prevent decay as their teeth continue to develop.

otor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among U.S. teenagers, accounting for more than one in three deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The good news is with a sturdy car and some well-ingrained safety lessons, these crashes are largely preventable.

Many mothers and fathers are reticent to have their children join the millions of drivers on the nation’s roadways.

A teen driver can test one’s nerves. Once a teenager receives his or her license, the family will have to reassess their automotive needs or risk fighting over the family auto-

mobile somewhat regularly.

There are certain practices that should be commonplace even if a teenager is anxious to run to the nearest dealership to pick out a car.

One of the first things a parent may do is to surround their child in the biggest, bulkiest vehicle possible. If there were an army tank available, parents might consider it.

But large trucks and SUVs have a tendency to roll.

Most families are already feeling the heat of overtaxed budgets. Another car payment could be unaffordable.

Plus, insurance premiums for a teenage driver could be very expensive, especially if that teen is driving a brand new car. Shop for a car that is a few years old.

Not only will it have plenty o f miles still left in it, but also, if an accident occurs, the repairs likely won’t be as expensive as they would if a new car gets dinged up.

Sure they may not be the ultra-cool sports car or the behemoth SUV, but sedans are large enough to effectively protect a driver in an accident and will have plenty of room to carpool friends to movies,

sports games and such.

Parents should make their children financially responsible for the car in one way or another. Whether they contribute a few dollars to the monthly bill or are responsible for oil changes and fuel costs, having a financial investment may encourage kids to be more careful with the vehicle.

A vehicle is only as safe as its driver. Consider defensive-driving courses in addition to the regular driving courses and exams the teen has taken. It will help him or her learn even more about being safe on the road. Of course, experience through road miles is another way to gain expertise.

College Students

s the admissions process at the nation’s best schools grows increasingly competitive, how and when students prepare for college entrance exams could determine where they spend the next four years and beyond.

Recognizing the important role planning and preparation plays during the college decision-making process, Revolution Prep, the largest on-campus test prep provider, offers the following tips to students and parents alike.

Prepare for the admissions process early. Every parent and student knows students don’t simply show up on campus the first day of school and gain admittance to college. However, many parents struggle to understand just what needs to be done and when to help their student stand out among the rest. It’s critical to research in advance the requirements of the

colleges on your wish list and map out a timeline. Will your student take the PSAT? AP Exams? SAT Subject Tests? When do students have to start taking the SAT or ACT test so they can retake it if they want to? Creating a plan will give you peace of mind and alleviate the stress of not knowing if you’ve missed a crucial deadline.

Take the SAT or ACT exams as seriously as you take your GPA. While a student’s resume is more than just test scores, even the most impressive application can take a hit without a solid performance on exams like the SAT or ACT test.

For example, at the most competitive colleges, a student’s chance of admission could as much as double with each 200 point score increase on the SAT. In addition, it has been shown that 25 percent of the college admissions decision is based on a student’s SAT/

ACT test score. In spite of that, the average student typically spends just 10 hours preparing for such tests vs. 1000+ hours on activities such as sports or community service, that have the same weight. This is a good reason to investigate an SAT or ACT test course for your child which can provide 50+ hours of prep time -- 5 times the average.

Learn the mental tricks of the trade. Success on the SAT or ACT test is not only about knowing the material. In fact, students who train their minds to handle the stress of the test often score better than those who take a purely academic approach to test preparation.

here have been few events in my life more exciting and daunting than learning T I am pregnant. As I stared down at the plus sign

on the test, a thousand questions swirled around my mind. How long does morning sickness last? Is it safe for me to travel? Can I still eat my beloved sushi? When will I be able to feel the baby kick? The biggest question of all was “Am I ready to be a mom?”

Having no siblings and this being my first pregnancy, I am a bit embarrassed to admit I don’t really have a clue what I’m doing. Luckily for me, there is a wealth of informative websites, magazines, books, and more that have helped me learn what to expect. My best asset so far has been a book that breaks down pregnancy week by week. Each week my husband and I sit down to read what changes our baby and my body should be going through. It gives us an opportunity to bond and learn about the incredible process of having a child.

Another tool that had recently been pointed out to me by one of our readers (thank you

Kimberly!) is a group called Crystal Coast Mommies. Clueless people like me can peruse the forums, chat with other members, browse recipes, and get cleaning/organizational tips from the website. Instruments such as this group and others can be exceptionally helpful when making the transition to motherhood.

So with all that being said, I suppose I am not quite as oblivious as I originally feared.

My first obstetrician appointment was just as enlightening as the materials I have been laboring over (no pun intended). Minus the numerous blood samples that had to be drawn, it was actually an enjoyable experience. I got to talk to a nurse about any concerns or questions I had about pregnancy and of course the highlight of the day was getting to see that initial ultrasound image and hearing my baby’s heartbeat for the first time. At only roughly 10 weeks, it doesn’t look much like a baby yet and we fondly refer to it as “the gummy bear”, but I’m excited to see what else motherhood has in store.

regnancy is a lot of things – exciting, somewhat scary and always an adventure.

And in a community bursting at the seams with new births, help is just around the corner, like with the New Parent Support Program aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

However, with an ever-burgeoning belly the last thing pregnancy should be is an attempt to manage the obstacle course of veiled insults from so-called well-wishers.

You know the type. They’re the friends or relatives who think they know you well enough to rub your baby bump, but who, in reality, don’t even know how old you are.

Their seemingly innocent questions and comments can be instant selfesteem killers to unsuspecting pregos.

So here’s some tips to pass on to your pseudo friends on what not to say to you over the next 40 weeks.

Wow, you’re huge!

Follow this general rule of thumb – if you wouldn’t say something to a non-pregnant woman, you shouldn’t say it to one who is incubating a human. They are aware their figure isn’t what it was six months ago, and the glaring reminder could result in a lot of tears, extremely loud insults or a punch to the face. Bringing up the fact that you only gained seven pounds during your entire pregnancy could result in the same consequences.

Was it a surprise?

Baby-making isn’t like following the latest Rachel Ray recipe, ensuring the results you hope for every time so on some level the news of finding out their pregnant is a bit of a surprise to every woman. Nonetheless, babies are a joy whether they are planned or not.

I was in labor for 47 hours!

On a scale of zero to Charlie Sheen, how crazy can you be? Horror birthing stories should be banned worldwide.

Odds are high your fertilized friends teeter between feelings of extreme happiness of their new arrival and immense fear at the thought of the delivery. This is especially true for first-time mothers. Don’t add to their anxieties by sharing your own stories of epidural shots that didn’t kick in, having your baby in the front seat of a car or how your doctor looked like he was 12 years old.

Until the baby comes, restrain yourself from saying much more than congratulations to your pregnant amigos. To earn bonus points, assure her that she’s going to be a wonderful mother and that she’s never been more beautiful. A quick trip to the store to satisfy a sudden craving would also help. Above all else, remember that friends don’t insult friends while they’re pregnant. It’s not safe – for anyone.

id you know that March is Traumatic Brain Injury Awareness Month? A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is caused by a blow or jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the normal function of the brain. Not all blows or jolts to the head result in a TBI. The severity of a TBI may range from “mild,” i.e., a brief change in mental status or

consciousness to “severe,” i.e., an extended period of unconsciousness or amnesia after the injury. Each year, an estimated 1.7 million people sustain a TBI annually. Children aged 0 to 4 years, older adolescents aged 15 to 19 years, and adults aged 65 years and older are most likely to sustain a TBI. 1 There are many ways to reduce the chances of a concussion or other form of TBI, including:

-- Wearing a seat belt every time you drive or ride in a motor vehicle.

Buckling your child in the car using a child safety seat, booster seat, or seat belt (according to the child’s height, weight, and age).

Children should start using a booster seat when they outgrow their child safety seats (usually when they weigh about 40 pounds). They should continue to ride in a booster

seat until the lap/shoulder belts in the car fit properly, typically when they are 4’9” tall.1 -- Never driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

-- Wearing a helmet and making sure your children wear helmets when: Riding a bike, motorcycle, snowmobile, scooter, or allterrain vehicle; Playing a contact sport, such as football, ice hockey, or boxing; Using

Parents of teenagers have their hands full. Between combating self-confidence woes and mood swings, many parents feel like they need to put on their battle armor to deal with their teen.

Teenagers also have their hands full. They are bombarded by ideas from every angle.

Thin is in, partying is cool, drugs are hip and lying is the only way to get freedom. While society plants these ideas in the minds of teenagers, parents are often left blindsided, unsure of how to fight back. Instead of tossing and turning in bed, plan to help your teen cope with peer and social pressures.

Get rid of the ‘Do as I say, not as I do’ philosophy. Lead your child by example. Your children watch every move you make. If you don’t want your child to curse, but you let loose a string of unsavory words every time a car cuts you off, you are fighting a losing battle.

Likewise, if you are trying to teach your child that alcohol makes people act recklessly, holding a weekend gathering, getting drunk is not an option. The bottom line is to remember your children are watching everything you do and actions speak louder than words.

“Always try to lead by actions,” Renee Howard, a local youth worker, “Act like your mother is watching you.”

While making sure you are an excellent model of the adult you want your teen to become is a start, there are some things that model behavior can’t overcome. Make

sure you and your teenager have open, two-way communication firmly established. While it might not be your favorite thing to do after a particularly stressful day at work, talking to your teenager about the up’s and down’s of their day helps establish open and honest communication. Using your discretion, share the highs and lows of your day with your teenager. You don’t have to pretend like the world is perfect. When they see how you handle struggles, they will take their cue from you and approach situations in a similar manner.

Remind your teenager they are one-of-a-kind. Fight back against the media’s stigma of not fitting in by highlighting your own unique nature. Encourage your kids to use their positive energy in strong ways instead of promoting negative thoughts and feelings amongst their circle of friends.

Puzzles, games & educational value W

hy do people buy and play games?

Entertainment value certainly factors in, but there are several other benefits to puzzles and games, including their educational value.

Just think about what happens when children sit down to play a board game or do a puzzle.

Individuals come together and strategize. Games also encourage following guidelines for play and winning or losing with good manners. There are many who believe these are valuable life lessons, but games and puzzles also may have other intrinsic educational value in the real world.

Although it can’t be assumed that playing games or doing puzzles will help make better students, there are some indications that playing certain games can have academic benefits.

In a 2008 study by Geetha Ramani and Robert Siegler, preschoolers were involved in “number line”board game research, where the player had to move a game piece through a series of sequentially numbered spaces.

Prior to and after the game play the children were given math tasks appropriate for their age group. The kids who were in the control group and didn’t play experienced no math skill improvement.

But the ones who had played the line game had marked improvement in measured math

skills. Ramani and Siegler have also found correlations between the number of board games that a child plays and a greater propensity for better preschool math performance.

Puzzles are another form of recreation that have educational merit and could trigger certain areas of the brain resulting in improvement in intellectual skills.

Puzzles develop hand and eye coordination and foster skills in problem-solving.

They also encourage kids not to give up.

Chess has been a game of strat-

egy played throughout the ages.

There have been statements that chess can help a child become more intellectual. Others argue the flip side, that it is the intellectual child who gravitates toward chess play and therefore skews the numbers in the terms of intelligence and chess relation.

When choosing games for children, educational value is derived most from games that require deductive reasoning and not pure chance from the spin of a wheel. A game like “Clue” or chess requires strategy and reasoning to become the winner. Even games like “Connect Four,” “Boggle,” “Scrabble,” and other deductive games are good choices to consider.

Although games and puzzles have the fun factor, there are educational benefits that may arise also in play.

ith young children, a little fun can turn even the most monotonous task into something exciting and productive. The next time you find yourself looking across a playroom floor littered with toys, try turning clean-up into an extended play-time.

One of the easiest ways to get things started is to turn on some music. Sarah Aguirre, About.com Guide, writes, “Listen to your favorite music and watch how time flies while you work and sing along. If multiple people are working together, take turns choosing the music.”

Teamwork is an important aspect of making chores more bearable. Let siblings share a responsibility and it will instantly

become less overwhelming, will take less time to accomplish and in some instances present a perfect opportunity for a game.

Charlene Prince Birkeland, of Yahoo.com’s Shine staff, suggests this entertaining game that would be great for birthday parties: “Scrunch up used wrapping paper into balls and toss them into boxes or paper bags. See who can score the most points or who has the most creative way of making a shot. When you’re done, take the filled bags out to recycling.”

Lastly, reward your children for a job well done. Some parents create and use a chore chart that keeps a visual tally for completed chores and allows children to see their progress which can provide motivation as they work towards a reward

  Infants are commonly introduced to solid foods between 4 and 6 months of age. When preparing for the addition of solid foods to a child’s eating schedule, parents may want to consider the health and environmental benefits of making their own baby food.

Commercially made baby foods are relatively safe, convenient and inexpensive. However, homemade baby foods are even more cost-effective and allow parents to regulate the ingredients put into the foods.

Individuals concerned about pesticides and other food additives should consider organic foods when making baby foods. These foods are grown and harvested under stringent guidelines.

Preparing homemade baby foods requires a few materials: * a food grinder, food mill, or food processor * storage containers * fresh foods Most baby foods are prepared by cooking the food until soft, allowing it to cool and then grinding the food down to a palatable texture depending upon the child’s age. Steaming retains the most nutrients in foods.

Parents can also bake, boil or microwave foods. Some fruits, such as bananas, do not need to be cooked before use. Also, use caution with nitrate-high foods, such as carrots, beets, and green beans. These foods should be made in small batches and used

quickly. Nitrates can build up in the foods when stored. Freezing foods that are potentially high in nitrates can alleviate this situation.

Young infants should be introduced to one food every 2 to 3 days to check for allergic reactions and tolerance. Once parents have determine which foods a child can tolerate, they can then begin to experiment with food blends the children may enjoy.

As a child grows, parents can vary the texture of foods, particularly when children begin to grow teeth. Eventually a child will want to self-feed finger foods and then parents can simply use foods that come right off of the dinner table.

Homemade baby food can be inexpensive. That’s because parents can buy ingredients in bulk and store leftovers for later usage. Also, there are no costs of packaging when making homemade baby food, benefitting the environment by creating less waste and using less energy.

Supporters of homemade baby food say there is another advantage apart from the cost and environmental factors.

Some say children who eat the same foods their parents are eating may be less picky eaters as they approach the toddler years.

Parents looking to experiment with homemade baby foods can find recipes both online and in books.

Parents consider their home a safe haven for children. But the home actually plays host to many childhood injuries. Each year, nearly 20,000 people die and 21 million medical visits result from home accidents in the United States, says the U.S. Home Safety Council. The majority of these injuries occur to children and the elderly.

When improving your home, take steps to decrease the likelihood of accidents by targeting the areas where injuries are most likely to occur.

Slamming doors & windows Amputations to fingers as a result of slammed doors and windows are a leading emergency room injury. This is easily remedied by putting foam or plastic guards on windows

and doors so they can’t crush fingers if they are accidentally slammed. High-placed latches on windows or doors that are off-limits can reduce injury.

Stairs Statistics indicate more people end up in U.S. emergency rooms because of fallrelated injuries than from any other cause. Falls down stairs are a leading cause of injury.

Adequate lighting around staircases can illuminate open stairwells. Non-slip treads on stairs can help prevent falls, as can replacing carpeting on stairs that is bunching or separating from the underfloor.

Be sure handrails are sturdy.

A pressure-mounted gate at the top of stairs can block the stairs to prevent falls if a child is wandering around at night

Window safety Falls out of open windows are another startling statistic, with thousands of young children being susceptible to injury every year, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Window guards that cover the open window with grating or metal bars, or locks, which prevent the window from opening past a certain height, can help prevent window injuries.

It’s also important to keep furniture away from easily opened windows.

Electrocution Children are curious by nature, and open outlets or wires and plugs will certainly attract their attention.

Consider hiding wires beneath plastic covers for this purpose.

Upgrade wiring if the house is old and if there are frayed wires or faulty outlets or switches.

Use outlet covers on all exposed electrical outlets.

Glass The increased use of architectural glass has led to greater instances of glass-related injuries, such as cuts and deep lacerations. Be sure to always use shatter-proof glass. Glass tables with pointy edges should be avoided or covered until children are older.

Ensure children are safe in and around the home. Make safety a priority whenever updating a home improvement to-do list.

Setting up the nursery Expecting parents eagerly anticipate the arrival of their new bundle of joy. After 9 months of waiting to see what he or she looks like and wanting to cuddle their newborn, the baby’s arrival is a momentous event.

As most people know, for such a little person, babies seemingly need a ton of gear and other items. One thing the baby will eventually need is a nursery to call home.

Although newborns do spend the first few months of their lives often tucked in at night in a bassinet or co-sleeper cradle in mom’s bedroom, chances are the infant will nap or gradually spend increasing amounts of time in his or her own room. Outfitting the nursery with the essentials can mean comfort and convenience.

To some parents, every baby product out there is a necessity. But in reality, there are maybe a handful of things to put into the nursery -- at least for the time being -- to adequately provide for the baby.

Crib At some point in the near future, baby will be doing most of his or her sleeping exclusively in the crib. Although that can seem like a faroff goal now that your little one prefers to sleep in your arms while watching late-night television, after a few months junior will become comfortable with his or her room and may even enjoy the security the crib provides.

sturdy and meet guidelines for minimum spacing between spindles. Older, hand-medown cribs are not recommended. Although drop-side cribs may offer ease of placing baby inside, some of these types of cribs have been recalled in the past for faulty railings that trap the infant. A stationary sided crib is another choice.

Position the crib away from items that can be grabbed by curious hands. Try to keep it away from windows for draft reasons and also to avoid window-fall accidents. Cribs should be free of breathing obstructions, like stuffed animals or puffy side bumpers to reduce the risk of SIDS. Changing table Most parents prefer a convenient changing table that also stores diapers and toiletries.

Although it may not always be possible to travel to the nursery for every diaper change, you can still equip the nursery with a table or another sturdy place to change your infant.

Some dressers double as changing tables in their design. A small loveseat or a guest bed in the nursery can also be a place to change the baby and provide a comfortable place to rest when he or she is waking up in the middle of the night.

Safety devices Although infants are too young to get into much trouble, babies eventually become very active and curious. Take the time now to babyproof the nursery. Select window coverings that cannot be pulled down or do not feature cords that can present a strangulation hazard.

All outlets should be blocked with a safety plug or some sort of cover to deter little fingers from seeking them out. Secure cords to lamps and other electronic devices in cord keepers.

Latches for drawers, closets and other doors can deter baby from getting into places that can be dangerous. Door knob covers enable adults to open doors but are too tricky for toddlers to figure out.

Mental stimulation Young children are constantly exploring the world around them. At a very young age their vision is still developing, so large, bold visuals can help stimulate visual comprehension.

Some parents opt to have vivid wall murals painted in the nursery. But bold, framed artwork or photos can also draw the eye of your little one and keep him or her engaged.

Research indicates that listening to music can help stimulate the brain and may even benefit a child’s intellect. Music can also be soothing to a baby, especially one alone in his or her nursery. You can consider a small radio or CD/mp3 player in the room to create a more soothing atmosphere.

Potty training tips for tough toddlers When you dreamt of having a child, you looked forward to snuggles, coos and giggles. Even changing diapers didn’t seem like a duty at first.

Now, two to three years later, you’re ready to ditch the baby wipes and move on to the next phase – potty training.

Lori Tulifua, a local mother and military spouse, is still reveling in the newness of her baby boy, but she knows the inevitable is coming.

“Right now, he doesn’t mind sitting in a wet or dirty diaper,” she said. “That will work against us later.”

Potty training is a gross but necessary part of parenting, and it’s not as easy as it seems.

“I loved the idea of saving on diapers,” Fiorinda Pierre, a mother of three stationed at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, noted. “It’s exciting but also challenging.”

For those tough toddlers who’d rather scream like a banshee than sit on a toilet, you’ll need a game plan.

First, keep a routine as much as possible by taking them or reminding them to go to the potty every 15 to 30 minutes.

A lot of children will do well when they are first being taught how to be a big boy or girl. They can even go for as long as a week with no accidents. However, as soon as their normal schedule differs, whether with a trip to grandma’s or staying with a sitter, they regress. Don’t panic.

As soon as possible, get them back into their routine. To prevent surprises, let them know

ahead of time if plans are going to change.

Next, don’t be ashamed to use a rewards system. Typically, something small like a sticker or a small piece of candy is enticing enough to get your kids on the can. You can also let them pick their own prize at a local dollar store to give them more of a sense of ownership over their actions.

Another thing to remember is to limit the amount of bedtime drinks. It seems like a no-brainer, but it’s hard to deny your children anything, especially something as small as a sip of milk. Don’t get caught up in the guilt. Tapering off the drinks an hour before bedtime may be the key to full night of dry sheets.

Finally, celebrate every milestone. Whether it’s one hour, one day or one week accidentfree, make sure your child knows you are proud of him or her. You can dance, cheer or even let them make a phone call to someone they love, like Grandma, to tell the big news.

“I used to tell myself through the tiring, sometimes feelings of hopelessness (wondering if) they will ever get use the toilet, that my child will not wear diapers their whole life. They will not be an adult wearing diapers,” joked Nanette Phillips, a mother of two from Jacksonville, NC. “It encouraged me.”

Every child will eventually grasp the concept of pottytraining. Take a deep breath and know you, as a parent, will make it through, too, and before you know it, they’ll be grown up and pottying on their own.

erhaps the most costly of growing pains for parents is the amount of clothing, toys and furniture their children go through.With two children of their own, Hunter and Michele Jackson can attest to that. The upcoming sale will be March 23-25 with a private sale for the consignors and volunteers on March 22. The sale will be hosted at the Swansboro Rotary Civic Center. Nearly New Fish will also host the Greenville sale March 1-4 next to the Harley Davidson dealer. Jackson believes military families in Jacksonville are excited to have the consignment event here. “A lot of military families new to Jacksonville from other areas have attended consignment events other places and are very pleased to see something like this come to Jacksonville,” said Jackson.

The Jacksons anticipate the response to the upcoming event will be even bigger than the fall sale here in Onslow county.

ew foods fit a season as well as chili fits winter. As the dead of winter looms large, foodies know full well nothing can warm the body up better than a bowl of chili.

Photographer Frankie Frankeny, who along with Leslie Jonath co-authored “Soup’s On: Soul Satisfying Recipes from Your Favorite Cookbook Authors and Chefs,” (Chronicle Books), knows full well the value of a hot bowl of chili on a cold winter’s day. Frankeny’s parents have enjoyed the following recipe for “Texas Chili Soup,” which Frankeny shares in her cookbook, for years on some of east Texas’ coldest days.

texas chili soup - Serves 6 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 cup chopped onion 4 teaspoons minced garlic 1 pound ground pork 1 pound ground beef or turkey 2 cans (29 ounces each) diced tomatoes 3 cans (15 to 16 ounces each) pinto beans, drained and rinsed 1 quart beef or chicken stock 4 stalks celery, chopped 2 tablespoons chili powder 1 tablespoon red pepper flakes 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 teaspoon salt Shredded cheddar & Monterey Jack cheeses, for garnish 2 green onions, chopped 8 ounces sour cream

In a large pot, warm the butter over low heat and saute the onion and garlic until golden. Add the ground pork and beef and cook until browned. Drain off half of the fat. Add the tomatoes, beans, stock, celery, chili powder, pepper flakes, cayenne, and salt and simmer until the flavors meld, 30 minutes to 1 hour. Serve in bowls sprinkled with cheese, chopped green onions, and a dollop of sour cream.

lack History Month is celebrated annually in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

Americans and Canadians celebrate Black History Month in February, while the U.K. devotes the month of September to recognizing and celebrating black history.

Over the course of history, blacks have made tremendous contributions that have impacted all aspects of society. The following facts and figures recognize some of the more notable persons and some lesser known tidbits to celebrate this Black History Month. ÁÁ The banjo originated in Africa. Until the 1800s, this popular and unique instrument was considered played exclusively by blacks.

ÁÁ C.B. Brooks invented the first street sweeper, a truck equipped with brooms, in 1896. ÁÁ Frederick Jones invented a portable air conditioner that proved especially valuable in World War II, during which it was used to preserve medicine and blood serum. ÁÁ Computer scientist Mark Dean, born in 1957, led a team that developed the ISA bus, which allows the use of computer plug-ins, including speakers, scanners and disk drives, among other things. ÁÁ Lonnie G. Johnson, an engineer whose work has included spacecraft system design for NASA, invented the Super Soaker water gun, a toy that was immensely popular in the early 1990s. ÁÁ Arguably one of the

greatest Olympian the world has ever seen, American Jesse Owens became the first athlete to win four gold medals in one Olympiad at the 1936 games in Berlin. ÁÁ Following in Owens’ footsteps, Wilma Rudolph overcame polio to win three gold medals in the 1960 Olympic Games. The 20th of 22 children, Rudolph broke three world records. ÁÁ Booker T. Washington was the first African-American to be honored on a United States stamp. ÁÁ When her autobiographical work “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” made the bestseller list, Maya Angelou became the first AfricanAmerican woman to author a non-fiction bestseller.

ÁÁ In 1975, Lee Elder became the first AfricanAmerican golfer to play in the Masters Tournament. Twentytwo years later, Tiger Woods would become the first African-American to win the prestigious tournament. ÁÁ The American Community Survey reported in 2005 that there were 2.4 million black military veterans in the United States, the highest of any minority group.
