NAVAL STATION NORFOLK - Naval Station (NAVSTA) Norfolk’s Pierside Entertainment Center held its first annual Heritage Bowling Tournament Feb. 15. The Heritage Bowling Tournament is the first tournament that Pierside Entertainment Center has hosted since completing its yearlong renovation in May of 2021. Six teams participated in the tournament which began on Feb. 15 and will continue until Feb. 24. The departments participating include NAVSTA Norfolk’s Transient Personnel Unit, Unaccompanied Housing, Navy Reserve Forces Command, Ship’s Cabin Galley, MWR and the command triad. “Why a bowling tournament,” said Capt. Janet Days, executive officer NAVSTA Norfolk. “Why not? It’s a safe, indoor activity, and it’s something that brings folks together.” Days was the originator of the event with a goal to bring awareness to the bowling alley on base and bring the local Naval community together. She is also a participant in the tournament. “Holding a bowling tournament was an awesome idea,” said Kelly Wirfel, NAVSTA

NAVAL STATION NORFOLK — District Chief Anthony Sickell, District 1 Naval Station (NAVSTA) Norfolk and Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads, was named the Fire Chief of the Year for the 2021 Commander Navy Region-Mid Atlantic Fire and Emergency Services Awards, Feb. 9. Sickell is one of two awardees assigned to NAVSTA Norfolk, and won the award for his leadership, innovative initiatives and dedication to his station. “I feel honored to be recognized and I appreciate the personnel who work here giving their best day in and day out,” said Sickell. “This job can be both challenging and rewarding at the same time; but it’s what makes us stronger as a team.” Sickell began his career working with the Navy in 1993 as an Operations Specialist

and would later leave the Navy as a second class five years later. Then in 1999 he joined the NAVSTA Norfolk Fire Department. “I decided to become a firefighter after getting out of the Navy because even at a very young child it was always a goal of mine,” said Sickell. During Sickell’s time serving as District Fire Chief, he has had oversight for response to more than 4,000 incidents including 13 aircraft emergencies. Sickell also initiated a “Dry Hydrant” project for various piers to serve as a secondary water source and back up to single loop hydrant system which augments available water for shipboard firefighting. In addition to Sickell winning the Fire Chief of the Year, Firefighter-Paramedic Jeremy McElroy also was awarded the Emergency Service (EMS) Provider of the Year award. Norfolk’s public affairs officer and bowling tournament participant. “My favorite part by far is meeting people from the various NAVSTA Norfolk departments, many of which I would have never met if it was not for this event. It’s a great way to meet people, have fun and build comradery.” The bowling alley has been on base for many years and was once an integral part of community recreation aboard NAVSTA Norfolk. With the new renovations, the goal is to once again become a destination for fun, safe, family and command entertainment. “We want everyone to come out to Pierside Entertainment Center and just have a good time,” said Brandon Lopez, bowling manager. “We have great food, a friendly staff, an incredible establishment and we can’t wait to see everybody come out here.” Pierside Entertainment Center is open every day of the week and currently has multiple promotion events, such as customer appreciation day on the last Friday of every month. The center is also hosting a Mardi Gras party on Friday, Feb. 25, with music and entertainment. NORFOLK, Va. — February brings the opportunity for the American people to celebrate several holidays each year: Valentine’s Day, President’s Day, and the Lunar New Year, to name a few. However Black History is celebrated all month long. Carter G. Woodson, an American historian and founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), first established the celebration of Black history in America in 1926. It was originally a weeklong celebration, which Woodson referred to as Negro History Week. He believed it would help popularize the knowledge of Black history throughout the American public.
