All Sailors are taught in boot camp about the events that unfolded on Oct. 12, 2000, to the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Cole (DDG-67) and are made to understand the importance of those events.

The story of the USS Cole made a significant impact on one United States Marine corporal who, at the time, was pregnant with her son. Paying tribute to her fallen fellow service members, she named her son in honor of their sacrifice.

“I thought it would be a beautiful living tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in that attack by naming my son Cole,” she said. “I already knew at the time that I was having a boy. Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron (HM) 12 successfully tested, trained, and qualified their squadron and aircrew from three separate squadrons on the use of the Bambi Bucket to support aerial firefighting missions, if tasked, on the East Coast, Oct. 8.

The MH-53E is the only rotary aircraft in the U.S. Navy with the capability to airlift a large-scale bucket of

this size, which weighs 11,000 pounds when transporting water.

“The East Coast now has the aerial firefighting capability to provide airborne fire suppression efforts when called upon,” said Lt. Cmdr. Jeffrey Spencer, HM-12 pilot. “This airborne firefighting training is similar to other mission areas to include lifting of heavy equipment, and cast and recovery in support of expeditionary forces.”

Spencer added that the capability HM-12 brings would be a game changer if called upon. For aerial firefighting support, the bucket is capable of trans-

porting 1,300 gallons.

“Sailors from three different Helicopter Mine Countermeasures squadrons provided the necessary expertise to execute the required training in September,” said Spencer. “We qualified eight crews, and now have the capability to provide two aircraft with buckets for firefighting response efforts.”

Master Chief Naval Air Crewman (Helicopters) Lance Howarth (NAC/ AW/SW) emphasized the proper storage of these buckets more than 14 years ago enabled the squadron to start train-

ing.

“With more than 14 years of time passed since actively using this capability on the East Coast prior to the disestablishment of Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 4, there were no airborne firefighting qualified pilots assigned on the East Coast,” said Howarth, who had civilian experience aerial fighting fires prior during a break in his naval service. “However, aircrewmen still serving in the community had experience flying these missions and we were able to leverage that experience.”

HM-12 is tasked to support two primary missions, Airborne Mine Counter Measure (AMCM) mission and the Navy Vertical Onboard Delivery (VOD) mission to support expeditionary forces.

Seabees with Underwater Construction Team One (UCT 1) based on Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek, Va., conducted an underwater inspection and assessment of Naval Air Station Pensacola’s deep water port this week.

The purpose of the team’s mission here was to evaluate the port area and survey damage caused by Hurricane Sally.

“Our primary mission is to support the Navy and the Marine Corps through underwater construction to include piers, pipelines and cable systems,” said Constructionman Senior Chief Petty Officer Liam O’Brien, who organized and supervised the UCT 1 team and the operation. “Port damage repair is also part of our mission. We are the ones who come in and ensure the port is open and safe, and has the services necessary for the ship to pull in and refit.”

In this case, a major hurricane was Naval Air Station Pensacola’s obstacle, and following Sally the base required the expertise of the Seabees with UCT 1.

“The purpose of this mission is extremely similar to our wartime mission,” said O’Bri-

en, who serves as the UCT 1 command master diver and operations chief. “This would be one phase of it — the inspection portion of it.”

Specifically, what we are down here to do is to let NAS Pensacola know if the port is able to support the vessels that normally moor at the pier, O’Brien said. We are also here to conduct a damage assessment on the port and make a salvage plan.

During the mission, Seabee divers explored the sea floor around the port and used complex equipment to map an image of the area underwater.

“We have equipment that can essentially produce a map of the sea floor, and you can see the terrain underwater,” he said.

The maps identify large debris and obstructions on the sea floor, and provide valuable data for the salvage plans.

Additionally, O’Brien said the team visually inspects the port above the water’s surface and creates the model of the area using AutoCAD drafting and design tools.

All of the information gathered from the mission will also assist engineers with the port’s reconstruction effort.

O’Brien said the Seabees use surface supplied air, but in scuba mode. The equipment allows the team to be lighter and faster, and gives them the ability to use smaller craft to reach locations quicker.

O’Brien said the Seabees selected to participate in the mission onboard NAS Pensacola were motivated and eager to assist following Hurricane Sally on the Gulf

Coast.

“Morale is extremely high with my team here,” O’Brien added. “These (Seabees) are excited and happy to be here. Supporting the base, supporting the Navy and the fleet is of key importance to us.”

The results of the port’s survey and assessment will be available to NAS Pensacola officials in the next week.

USS Wyoming (SSBN 742) has returned to the fleet following completion of its Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) Engineered Refueling Overhaul (ERO) Oct. 9.

An ERO is a complex, major shipyard availability during which the submarine is refueled and upgraded before returning to sea to support the country’s nuclear deterrence strategy. In addition to Wyoming’s refueling, NNSY modified the ship in accordance with Enlisted Women at Sea

The shipyard project team achieved several successes during the overhaul, including its Strategic Weapons Test team setting a record for Missile Operational Sequence Testing, marking the fastest completion of this evolution during an ERO. NNSY completed missile operational testing in eight weeks, breaking its previous record of 10.5 weeks on USS Rhode Island (SSBN 740).

“Now that this overhaul is complete, Wyoming can carry on with the Department of Defense’s number one mission of nuclear deterrence as we continue prepara-

tions for the transition to the Columbiaclass submarines,” said Rear Adm. John Spencer, Commander, Submarine Group Ten. “I am well aware that completing this scale of work requires an immense amount of teamwork between the ship crew and all of our teammates, both civilian and uniformed, at Norfolk Naval Shipyard, and I appreciate their collective efforts.”

“Ship repair is a team sport,” said Project Superintendent Brian Slivinski.

“The whole team, from the deckplate level mechanics to the support organizations to Ship’s Force, everybody worked really well together with a common goal. Any

challenge that was presented, we’d tackle as a team. We had a mindset of controlling our own destiny, which was very beneficial to us.”

Adding that this is the last in a line of eight East Coast Trident submarine Engineered Refueling Overhauls at NNSY which began with USS Florida (SSGN-728) in 2003, Slivinski added, “I think we’ve wrapped up this series of availabilities on a good note.”

Homeported in Kings Bay, Georgia, Wyoming is one of the United States’most vital strategic assets, and combined with the other Ohio-class submarines, makes up one leg of the nuclear triad.

NNSY is one of the oldest, largest, and most multifaceted industrial facilities belonging to the U.S. Navy, and specializes in repairing, overhauling and modernizing ships and submarines.

Twenty years ago today the USS Cole was attacked by terrorists at 11:18 a.m. on Oct.

12, 2000, while moored for refueling in the Port of Aden, Yemen. The explosive bomb created a 40-by-60-foot hole on the port side of the ship, and the Cole's Sailors fought fires and flooding for the following 96 hours to keep the

ship afloat. We come together to hold these Commemoration events on the 20th anniversary of the attack to remember and honor the 17 Sailors who were killed, the 37 who were injured and the Gold Star families.

Although 20 years have passed, the ship is still a strong fighting force, new crews have manned the rails and those who were children then, have grown into adults; the aftermath of the attack froze time for the survivors and loved ones left behind.

Normal took on a new, unwanted, definition and coping became the daily struggle.

Against all odds though, strong sentiments emerged from the ashes of despair. These emotions can best be described through the Navy core values: Honor, Courage and Commitment.

“We train like we fight,” said Operations Specialist 2nd Class Mia Foster, a crewmember of the USS Cole. “The way that the crew responded is what we use for training purposes. Today we honor them, and the courageous sacrifice they made.”

Following the attack, the Navy developed new training scenarios modeled after the Cole bombing. All Sailors like Foster go through an intense 12-hour scenario in recruit training known as Battle Stations-21. The training includes a series of simulated attacks at sea and requires

He recalled going outside to the weather deck with a shipmate to find Chief Gunner’s Mate Norman Larson on the bridge wing with an M-14 rifle, yelling at them to “get back inside the skin of the ship!”

Immediately following the blast, crew members rushed to rescue severely injured and trapped shipmates. Despite uncertainties of what may come next, Cole’s crew withstood 96 hours of sustained damage control efforts, preventing further flooding and damage.

He attributed their ability to keep the ship afloat to the crew’s damage control training.

“Despite tragedy, despite chaos, Sailors will fall back on what they have been trained to do,” said Cotherman.

The attack created a 40-by-60-foot hole that tore into the ship’s hull. This caused a ruptured sea water pipe in the forward power conversion room, a space which distributes electrical power throughout the front half of the ship.

“We didn’t have any power forward,” said Cotherman. “Our power configuration was very limited to what we could do so we had to rig casualty power cables from the stern of the ship.”

On the day of the bombing many of the chief petty officers were injured, resulting in a loss of highly experienced personnel on the ship and guidance to junior Sailors.

“The person that I probably knew best was Electronics Technician Chief Petty Officer Richard Costelow,” said Cotherman.

Costelow was in the Chief’s Mess during the time of the bombing and was severely injured in the blast. After being taken to a safer area, shipmates tried to resuscitate him several times, but he succumbed to his wounds.

In total, 17 Sailors lost their lives and 39 others were injured.

“We took a hit in our leadership, which was the Chief’s Mess, and some of us had to take charge,” said Cotherman, who essentially assumed the duties as Combat System Officer of the Watch and sent Sailors out to various spaces on the ship.

He and his team started doing battle damage assessments around the ship.

“We communicated with controlling stations and figured out what people needed.

They had to assess what they had, did not have and what they needed,” said Cotherman.

Since the ship’s galley took the biggest hit, in the first few days after the bombing, Sailors did not have hot meals.

“We had to raid the ship’s store,” said Cotherman.

The Cole remained moored in the port of Aden for three weeks following the bomb-

recruits to stop the flooding, fight fires and prepare to defend from a second attack, similar to what the crew of the Cole successfully did on October 12.

During the commemoration, a video highlighted the significance of Battle Stations-21 and a former Cole crew member, Jason Mosher. At the time of the attack, Mosher was an active duty Sailor and today he is one of the Battle Stations-21 simulation operators.

“The Cole is being honored every day with recruits that come through this trainer, so for me, as a USS Cole survivor, … it is immensely rewarding,” said Mosher. “USS Cole was incorporated into the legacy of battle stations. Less than three years after the attack on Cole, it was already being kept fresh in every generation of Sailor that has come through boot camp. That in itself, can’t be quantified and it is amazing to see that happening.”

One of the scenarios takes place on a destroyer’s mess deck, and the clock on the mess deck of the ship is set to the time that Cole was attacked, 11:18 a.m.

“The clock being set to the time is significant to me. It’s a good way to memorialize the Cole in a really tangible way. The most important thing to me about working at battle stations and keeping the Coles legacy going, is, hoping that the families and the loved ones of those who lost some of my shipmates can know that their loss is not in vain and that everyday their memory is being honor.”

Mosher helps run the battle stations simulation for more than 40,000 new Navy recruits each year.

Due to power outages on the ship, a satellite phone was set up for Cole Sailors to contact their families.

“We were afforded a three-minute telephone call,” said Cotherman. “It was to inform our friends and family that we were alive and to not worry about us. My wife actually utilized the call-waiting feature and called my parents. So, I was able to talk to my wife and parents at the same time in that three-minute phone call. Priceless, in my opinion. I would have paid anything.”

After three weeks, Cole was towed away from Aden by the Military Sealift Command ocean-going tug USNS Catawba (T-ATF 168), then transported back to the U.S. aboard the heavy transport ship M/V Blue Marlin.

Cole Sailors flew directly to Naval Station Norfolk.

‘It was a glorious homecoming with all of our friends and family waiting for us,” said Cotherman. “At the time it was a joyous occasion, but it was hard knowing the circumstance of everything.”

Cotherman left Cole in 2004 but has taken several assignments to commands at Naval Station Norfolk, where the ship is homeported, and where the memorial of the attack was dedicated in 2001.

He said he always tries to visit the ship and the USS Cole Memorial when he is in Norfolk.

“It’s always emotional to visit the Memorial. I saw it when it was first laid, now those little sapling trees are all grown,” said Cotherman. “It’s so much more rewarding for me, every time I go.”

Thinking of his Cole shipmates who were killed or injured, Cotherman said, “I knew each one of them in a different way, but they all make an impact in my life”.

Now deployed aboard Philippine Sea operating in the same area of the world as the attack 20 year ago, Cotherman reflects.

“It’s a bittersweet moment for me.

My wife is going to attend the ceremony in Norfolk, Va. in my stead, which is some comfort. If I have to miss the reunion there’s no other place that I’d rather be than here in 5th Fleet doing my job.”

This month, Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Mike Gilday sent a message to the fleet asking for a moment of silence on Oct. 12, at 11:18 a.m., to honor the fallen and the heroes who saved their ship after the terrorist attack on the USS Cole 20 years ago.

“As a Navy, it is important, and I am directing that we observe a moment of silence at 11:18 a.m., (local) that day to recognize the 20th anniversary of this attack. We will pause to remember those who were tragically lost, pay tribute to the heroic actions of the crew, and reflect on our responsibility to carry their proud legacy forward,” said Gilday.

The commemoration ceremony serves as a not only a remembrance, but a reunion for the Gold Star Fam-

ilies. It is the day they all have in common, but wish they didn’t. Family members greeted each other with hugs and warm sentiments before the start of the ceremony and left each other in the same manner afterward.

“It’s amazing how something like this can bring everybody together,” said Martin Gauna, the uncle of Information Systems Technician Seaman Timothy L. Gauna. “It’s literally a bond and although we all suffered tragic losses, in the end we’ve gained a new extended family.”

Every October 12th, Sailors around the world pause to remember the 17 and their sacrifice. In his final thoughts, Grady concluded, “And so, owing to the significance of Cole’s story to our Navy and our nation, today, we pause in places spanning the globe: to remember those that we lost too soon, to honor the heroic actions of the crew and to reflect on our responsibility to carry Cole’s legacy forward.”

Secretary of the Navy Kenneth J. Braithwaite announced USS Constellation (FFG 62) as the name for the first ship in the new Guided Missile Frigate (FFG(X)) class of ships Oct. 7 while aboard the museum ship Constellation in Baltimore Inner Harbor.

The name was selected in honor of the first U.S. Navy ships authorized by Congress in 1794 -- six heavy frigates named United States, Constellation, Constitution, Chesapeake, Congress, and President.

These ships established the Continental Navy as an agile, lethal and ready force for

the 19th century. This will be the fifth U.S. Navy ship to bear the name Constellation.

“As the first in her class, these ships will now be known as the Constellation Class frigates, linking them directly to the original six frigates of our Navy, carrying on the traditions of our great service which have been passed down from generation to generation of Sailors,” said Braithwaite. “While providing an unmatched capability and survivability for the 21st Century, Constellation Class Frigates will honor our Navy’s historic beginnings as we continue to operate around the world in today’s era of Great Power Competition.”

As the next generation of small surface combatants will contribute to meeting the

goal of 355 battle force ships. With the ability to operate independently or as part of a strike group, it will deliver an Enterprise Air Surveillance Radar (EASR), Mk 41 Vertical Launching System, and Baseline 10 (BL 10) Aegis Combat System capabilities.

The ships lethality, survivability, and improved capability will provide Fleet Commanders multiple options while supporting the National Defense Strategy across the full range of military operations.

Constellation is a historic name with a long Naval history. The original name was submitted to President Washington in 1795 to represent the ‘new constellation of stars’ on the United States flag. The first Constellation was a 38-gun frigate with a crew of

340 personnel. The ship was built in Baltimore in 1797 and remained in service until 1853.

The second Constellation was a sloop-ofwar launched in 1854 and was the last sailonly warship designed and built by the U.S. Navy. The ship currently stands as a museum in Baltimore.

The keel for a third ship named Constellation was laid, but the ship was never completed in the peace years following WWI. The most prominent Constellation is the Kitty-Hawk class conventional aircraft carrier that commissioned in 1961. It had a storied history to include overcoming several catastrophic fires on board, supporting operations during the Vietnam War, the first Persian Gulf War, and Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom before decommissioning in 2003.

Constellation Class Frigates will be built at Marinette Marine Corporation in Marinette, Wisconsin with the first ship scheduled for delivery in 2026.

Donald Cook begins Exercise Joint Warrior 20-2

The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Donald Cook (DDG 75) is participating in exercise Joint Warrior 20-2, a U.K.-hosted, multilateral training exercise designed to provide NATO and allied forces with a unique multi-warfare environment to prepare for global operations.

During Joint Warrior, Donald Cook is participating in surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, and anti-air warfare scenarios that focus on maintaining maritime security.

Every scenario requires the ship to operate with Allies and partners, working together to respond to various threats.

Some scenarios require a response to simulated intelligence injects and cyber-attacks.

“Donald Cook has a rich history of participating in multinational exercises like Joint Warrior,” said Cmdr. Kelley Jones, commanding officer of Donald Cook. “I find that these exercises always improve our ability to coordinate with Allied units, sharpen the crew’s warfighting skills, and build relationships with partners. It gives us a chance to come together as a team to react to realistic threats and accomplish a mission. It’s an honor to be at Joint Warrior 20-2, and I’m especially glad that our participation was not prohibited by COVID-19.”

The Sullivans (DDG 68), the Lewis and Clark-class dry cargo ship USNS Medgar Evers (T-AKE 13), and two P-8A Poseidons from Patrol Squadron 47 join ships and aircraft from 12 other nations in this iteration of the exercise.

Approximately 680 U.S. military and civilian personnel are participating in this iteration of Joint Warrior.

“Joint Warrior confirms the United States’ and Europe’s mutual commitment to ensuring security in the region,” said Jones. “Joint Warrior allows NATO Allies and partners to train together so we are ready to respond together.”

The U.S. Navy routinely participates in many exercises like Joint Warrior all around the world each year to provide interoperability opportunities and ensure the security and stability of regions across the globe.

Four U.S. Navy destroyers, including Donald Cook, are forward-deployed to Rota, Spain, and assigned to Commander, Task Force 65 in support of NATO’s Integrated Air Missile Defense architecture. These Forward-Deployed Naval Forces-Europe ships have the flexibility to operate throughout the waters of Europe and Africa, from the Cape of Good Hope to the Arctic Circle, demonstrating their mastery of the maritime domain.

U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. Sixth Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.

Every once in a while, I think back to a day during my teens, when I went canoeing by myself. This wasn’t an extraordinary accomplishment. It didn’t earn me a spot on an olympic team. I didn’t receive any bravery commendations or citizenship awards.

Nonetheless, the somewhat faded memory of this simple personal feat has helped me over the years.

As a military spouse, I sometimes felt completely overwhelmed. Whether my husband was home or away, I carried the mental weight of responsibility for managing the many details of our family life. In order to provide consistency to our three children in the midst of military deployments, travel, watch schedules, and PCS moves, I was placed in charge. I rose to the occasion when it came to major crises, like when our son was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at age three. But when faced with the many minute demands of daily life — laundry, bills, band concerts, scout meetings, in-laws, yard work, snack duty, taxes — I was often overcome with stress.

In those moments, I felt weak, shamefully incapable of managing as a military spouse.

In this insecure state, my mind attempted to prove a point, by replaying memories like that canoe outing in 1984.

It was a hot summer day, and I was just eighteen years old. My best friend from high school had moved away, and everyone else I knew was either on vacation, or too cool to hang out with me. My choices were to stay home and do chores, or head out to find adventure.

Our forgotten 18-foot fiberglass Coleman canoe leaned wantonly against the side of our garage. I was a swimmer, but not exactly

brawny at five-foot-four. With considerable effort, I dragged the 70-pound canoe from its spot, across an acre of lawn to our 1977 Chevy Blazer.

Nowadays, Chevy Blazers are stylish fourdoor SUVs driven by soccer moms sipping Starbuck’s Caramel Macchiatos. But back then, these 4WD vehicles were behemoth two-door trucks used for hauling deer carcasses out of the woods. I don’t recall doing it, but somehow, I hoisted the canoe onto the roof of the vehicle by myself, nearly seven feet off the ground. Using rope I found in the garage, I tied the ends of the canoe tight to each bumper, fearful that, if it fell of the Blazer while I was driving, there would be hell to pay.

The details of getting to Yellow Creek State Park, launching the canoe, and paddling around the lake alone that day are foggy. Knowing my active imagination, I likely planned a full affair for myself, complete with a packed picnic, a bit of tanning (it was the Eighties after all), and a nice long swim.

Although these recollections are faint, I have a crystal clear vision of driving home after my solitary canoeing expedition. With wet hair and a sunburn on my shoulders, I

barreled down Route 422 with the driver’s window opened, one hand dangling casually in the wind. Peering out at the open road between the Blazer’s black hood and the burnt orange canoe tied overhead, I knew I could do anything I set my mind to.

That moment — that pure feeling of independence, confidence, strength and competence — became permanently etched in the recesses of my young mind. I wasn’t conscious of this imprinting at the time, but over the decades, as I grew and faced life’s inevitable challenges, that long ago memory would occasionally surface to reassure me that, yes, it was true — I could do anything I set my mind to.

There are other memories I use to remind myself that I’m not as weak as I feel. Like the time I hung a ceiling fan over our kitchen table. The year I secured a grant to buy a new scoreboard for the football team. The day I published my first column.

The mind is a powerful thing. During times of stress, it floods us with emotion, apathy, anxiety, fear. Overwhelmed, we sometimes lose sight of our own strength. By tapping into our mind’s memory bank, we remind ourselves that we won’t sink, because we’ve always been able to swim.

There are practices you can take to reduce your stress, increase your safety, and still allow your connections with friends, loved ones and your community to thrive.

Maintain your daily routine.

For the mental wellness of both you and your children, it is a good idea to stick to your usual routine as much as possible while homebound.

Going to bed and getting up in the morning at your normal time, sharing meals as a family, and sticking to an exercise regime you can do indoors or outside on your own, or with your kids

or partner, are all ways to stay resilient. Sticking to a routine is also especially nurturing for young children.

Take steps to promote child safety in the home.

If you have made the decision to self-quarantine, your family may not be used to being home together at all times.

To reduce risk of accidents or injuries to your children, take care to make sure any dangerous or potentially deadly items are safely stored, locked, and inaccessible to children. These items may include certain medications, chemical detergents or bleaches used for cleaning (for especially young children) or firearms.

This is a new and frightening time for all of us, kids and adults alike.

Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) Pittsburgh’ mission is to recruit the best and brightest men and women for service in America’s Navy. For its performance during fiscal year 2020, NTAG Pittsburgh was awarded Navy Recruiting Command’s (NRC) Bronze “R” Award.

The Bronze R is the award that any recruiting command receives if they achieve all facets of the officer and enlisted recruiting mission. NTAG Pittsburgh last won the award in 2009. To be eligible for the award, an NTAG must achieve all Enlisted “E” and Officer “O” recruiting categories selected

by NRC. “A year ago this command set a goal, and that goal was to earn the Bronze R,” said Cmdr. Brandon Smith, commanding officer of Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG)

Pittsburgh.

“It was nothing short of an all hands effort. Together we make a great team, and as a team we achieve great things. The awards are great and the recognition is wonderful, but at the end of the day we don’t do it for the awards. We do it because it’s our duty. We do it because it’s our mission.”

Master Chief Navy Counselor Frederick Tuiel, NTAG Pittsburgh chief recruiter is honored to celebrate the accomplishment for more reasons that one. Tuiel, who is a big football fan, takes pride in NTAG Pittsburgh’s most recent award.

inclusion and that’s another partnership that we have in our cities,” Tuiel said. “The Recruiting R means so much to me because I joined the Navy to serve my country. The job that we’re charged with is to provide the highest quality men and women for enlistment and commissioning into the U.S. Navy and U.S. Navy Reserve. Being awarded the Bronze R signifies that we did just that.”

Social media marketing proving worthwhile for Navy

Anyone who is in recruiting understands that the world they live in today requires a different approach when it comes to encouraging the best and brightest to join the U.S. Navy. Between the coronavirus limiting person-toperson interactions and hurricane season on the Gulf Coast raining out physical training sessions, recruiters are getting creative in the way they educate, train and assist those who are interested in a naval career.

Air Traffic Controller 1st Class Jaime Britt, a Bowling, TX, native, is one of those recruiters. She is sharpening her social media marketing skills by helping Sailors and Future Sailors through live social media videos and podcasts.

“I think each of these vodcasts and podcasts has its own unique ways of helping,” said Britt. “When COVID -19 came into the picture, we had to get creative in the way we communicated with each other, our applicants and our Future Sailors. When we started these casts, we didn’t know the effect it would have on recruiting nation. This has been a light in the dark to our service members and our Future Sailors. We are not alone. We are closer than ever.”

Along with recruiters from other commands around the country, Britt is using her naval and recruiting expertise to educate and motivate her shipmates, Future Sailors, fellow service members from other branches and civilians.

“The C.O.R.E (Communication, Organization, Relationships and Expectations) mentor vodcast was created for future Sailors to ask questions and interact,” Britt said.

“We also speak on real world topics that are affecting our future Sailors. C.O.R.E mentorship is important because it opens the discussions we need to be having with our Future Sailors and things they are curious about.”

Many Future Sailors were having doubts about joining and were asking many different questions to Damage Control 1st Class Veronica Scott, Commander, Navy Recruiting Command’s social media trainer.

“I am an admin on U.S. Navy Future Sailor Facebook group and noticed many Future Sailors asking question about current news and events,” said Scott. “There seemed to be a fear of joining as a female or questions about how diverse the Navy really is. I thought it was really important to jump online with our Future Sailors to answer their questions about hot topics or simply mentor our future. AC1 Britt along with five other female Sailors formed what we now call C.O.R.E. We volunteer our Saturday mornings to host Q&As or discuss topics, sharing our experiences in the Navy. I invited some of the most honest, open and great mentors across recruiting nation to join, and AC1 Britt is one of them!”

Not only does Britt participate in vodcasts and podcasts that elevate Future Sailors and Sailors mentally, she is also keeping them in physical shape with the “Certified Fitness Leader” vodcast.

“The ‘Certified Fitness Leader’ (CFL) vodcast was created to motivate and encourage our Sailors,” Britt said.

“Even though we cannot use gyms, we can still stay in shape and our physical health is just as important as our mental health. We also interview service members that embody the fitness culture and fitness influencers. We network across recruiting, active-duty and Reserve boundaries. CFL is important because our fitness is important to our operation and helps us to overcome limits, promotes positivity and reminds everyone not to slack on fitness.”

change.

“I, like most people, felt caged, and I gained weight due to quarantine and teleworking,” said Britt. “These social media ventures hold me accountable. They force me to be in shape and present a positive image to the social network. They have helped me become more comfortable in my own skin as well as in front of the camera. They also help me to be more innovative in the way I do my job. For example, with our current situation and a hurricane, I did not just cancel physical training with the Future Sailors; I just switched it to Zoom. We never missed a beat.”

These platforms have kept Britt and many recruiters on a personal level with their Future Sailors and shipmates and have helped bridge the gap during this trying time.

“One of the biggest challenges was keeping recruiters motivated during the pandemic and figuring out new and innovative modes of prospecting,” Britt said. “I spent many hours brainstorming ideas, stepping back and letting the recruiters figure things out for themselves instead of jumping in and helping. This is by far my weakness, but it builds stronger recruiters.”

Scott added, “I was one of the co-hosts with AC1 Britt on the ‘Savage Hour.’ The name sounds dark and intimidating, but we as military service members wanted everyone to know the truth. The truth is that military services members are people, too. We have fun, hobbies, and talents. We love serving our country, too. I believe this platform brings light to who we are in and out of uniform.”

At first glance, Britt may come off as quiet and reserved, but she puts a lot of hard work and dedication into her craft.

“When I met AC1 Britt several months ago during Boston Swarm week, she appeared to be quiet and soft spoken,” Scott said. “I discovered how loud her voice really was through her social media content. AC1 is talented and gifted in video marketing! She is humble, hardworking and wants to assist whenever there is a need.

She is a dedicated busy bee, and I have no idea when she sleeps.”

Britt has proven that she is up to the challenge no matter what is thrown her way.

“The social media videos are a way for me to continue to do my job and to connect with my colleagues across the nation,” said Britt. “I have met and become close with so many recruiters and mentors across the nation due to these ventures.”

“I think the vodcast are showing the world that we’re

not just the uniform,” added Navy Counselor 1st Class Jay Kilgore, leading petty officer of Navy Recruiting Station Huntersville, North Carolina. “They help everyone see that we can show off our talents and motivate people to step out of their comfort zone and be who you are and don’t let anyone stop you from achieving your goals. She cares about her Future Sailors and pushes and motivates them to be the best of the best. As a Sailor, she loves the Navy and is proud of her rate and represents it all the time.

As a person, I think that she has a very kind heart and spirit. She would give you the shirt off her back if she could.”

Britt has no desire to slow down anytime soon.

“My future plans are to continue sharpening my marketing skills and hopefully go back to school and get my doctorate in marketing,” Britt mentioned. “I would like to cross rate to navy counselor rating because I enjoy this job, even the tough parts.”

Navy Talent Acquisition Group New Orleans has an area that encompasses 91,940 square miles.

The district’s boundaries cover predominately Louisiana and include areas of Mississippi, lower Alabama and portions of the Florida panhandle.

The command has one Talent Acquisition Onboarding Center (TAOC). The TAOC is subdivided into four TAOC detachments, which include 22 enlisted Navy Recruiting Stations, three Navy Reserve Recruiting Stations, two Navy Recruiting Processing Stations, and seven Navy Officer Recruiting Stations.

At the end of this year, Navy Recruiting Command will consist of a command headquarters, three Navy Recruiting Regions, 26 NTAGs and 64 TAOCs that will serve more than 1,000 recruiting stations around the world.

Their mission is to attract the highest quality candidates to assure the ongoing success of America’s Navy.

Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group conducts maritime security operations in the Indian Ocean From Commander, Task Force 70 / Carrier Strike Group 5 Public Affairs

The Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group began maritime security and stability operations in the Indian Ocean, Oct. 9.

The carrier strike group, including the Navy’s only forward-deployed aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) and the embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 5, Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Antietam (CG 54), and Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Halsey (DDG 97), routinely operates throughout the IndoPacific in support of U.S. commitments to regional allies and partners.

These operations mark the second occasion of the 2020 deployment that the strike group has sailed in the Indian Ocean, demonstrating its capability to quickly respond to any contingency throughout the region.

Horses and their handlers from Cornerstone Therapeutic Riding Center spent two days interacting with Sailors assigned to Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) Sept. 30 and Oct. 6.

NMCSD’s Resiliency Support Command (RSC) invited Cornerstone Therapeutic Riding Center to come support staff members to relieve stress and anxiety associated with the co-

ronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The “Lunch with the Littles” event paired Sailors with miniature horses, where Sailors got to hand-feed, pet and learn about the animals from Cornerstone Therapeutic Riding Center’s staff and volunteers.

“NMCSD’s RSC wanted to provide their staff with some respite from the stresses they’ve been facing, as well as introduce all of the departments to beneficial programs that support health and wellness for their patients,” said Judy Beckett, Cornerstone Therapeutic Riding Center’s founded and executive director. “We transformed

the softball field at NMCSD into a horse playground with six miniature horses in three separate corrals, and three big horses that cruised the field, meeting hospital staff.”

The event was attended by more than 50 Sailors and staff, and Cornerstone Therapeutic Riding Center aims to continue providing wellness events like “Lunch with the Littles” more often.

Cryptologic Technician (Technical) 1st Class John Rodil coordinated the event on behalf of NMCSD’s RSC. “The initial planning stages were tedious,” said Rodil. “We had to get

permission from the Patient Safety Department to conduct the event in accordance with COVID-19 restrictions and Morale, Welfare and Recreation’s permission to use the softball field. The 11 staff volunteers helped keep the event safe, and all of the puzzle pieces came together beautifully.”

CTF 75 participates in EOD SME exchange for CARAT Brunei From Commander Task Force 75 Public Affairs GUAM

Explosive Ordnance Disposal technicians from Task Force 75 and troop commanders from the Royal Brunei Land Force participated in a real-time, virtual EOD subject matter expert exchange (SMEE), Oct. 6, as part of the 26th annual Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) maritime exercise.

The exchange was conducted virtually to mitigate COVID-19 risks, but still allowed both countries to share presentations on their capabilities and gear while exchanging questions on common terrains, chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear defense (CBRN) kits, improvised explosive devices and their remotely operated vehicles.

“Today we conducted a partner exchange with Brunei Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit and gave each other a background on our history and what our communities do,” said Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician 1st Class John Dixon, the platoon’s leading petty officer.

“We then got more specific on each other’s procedures for improvised explosive devices and chemical warfare.”

This SMEE allowed both units to learn from each other’s experiences while allowing for greater interoperability between the forces.

“The reason these interactions are important is that it’s good to have allies around the world, because you never where you’ll be operating at,” said Dixon. “The more we reach out with these interactions, the more allies we have in the fight, as well as better knowledge and expertise we gain from working with each other.”

This interaction, along with all events planned throughout CARAT Brunei, put emphasis on social distancing and other COVID-19 mitigation measures.

The maritime exercise is the Navy’s oldest and longest continually running regional exercise in South and Southeast Asia, which strengthens partnerships between regional navies and enhances maritime security cooperation and interoperability throughout the IndoPacific.

MCC Travis Simmons Explosive Ordnance Disposal technicians assigned to the Task Group 75.1 EOD capability of Task Force 75 participate in a virtual subject matter expert exchange with troop commanders from the Royal Brunei Land Force (RBLF) during Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) Brunei 2020, Oct. 6. This year marks the 26th iteration of CARAT, a multinational exercise designed to enhance U.S. and partner navies' abilities to operate together in response to traditional and non-traditional maritime security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.

1st Class John Dixon Lt. William Huntsman, the platoon’s commander, said though it’s hard to replace face-to-face and handson interactions, there is value still be gained from doing a virtual SMEE. “The United States military is not going to slow down to coronavirus because we still have work to do,” said Huntsman. “Whether it’s virtual or face-to-face, our community is ready to get the most out of that opportunity. We’re adapting and shifting the way things are to insure and support our allies in the region.”

U.S. assets participating in CARAT Brunei include staff from Commander Task Force (CTF) 72, CTF 73, CTF 75, CTF 76, DESRON 7, EOD Mobile Unit Five, USMC III Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF), Special Operations Command Pacific, the U.S. 7th Fleet Band and a P-8 Poseidon aircraft. Afloat units include the

Spearhead-class expeditionary fast transport USNS Millinocket (T-EPF 3).

CTF 75 is 7th Fleet’s primary expeditionary task force and is responsible for the planning and execution of maritime security operations, explosive ordnance disposal, diving, engineering and construction, and underwater construction. It additionally provides direct support to diving and salvage operations and expeditionary intelligence throughout the Indo-Pacific region.

The U.S. 7th Fleet conducts forward-deployed naval operations in support of U.S. national interests in the Indo-Pacific area of operations. As the U.S. Navy’s largest numbered fleet, 7th Fleet interacts with 35 other maritime nations to build maritime partnerships that foster maritime security, promote stability and prevent conflict.

During a year in which the COVID-19 pandemic has created unique challenges, Sailors from Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) Texas found a way to celebrate their heritage at a physically distant Navy Day Ball event.

The NIOC Texas Navy Day Ball Committee recognized that hosting an event this year would require extra ingenuity, and they collectively rose to the occasion. “In July, the Navy Day Ball Committee decided to create a

presentation that could be played virtually to the command,” said Chief Cryptologic Technician (Networks) Ryan Kearney, who chaired the committee.

“Somebody proposed playing it at a drive-in and the idea took off from there.”

Hosted at the Stars and Stripes drivein theater in New Braunfels, TX, the family-friendly evening featured a presentation including a special message from Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. Michael Gilday, door prizes, and the screening of the movie ‘Midway’.

Executive Officer, Cmdr. Meredith Schley stated the importance of continuing the event despite difficult cir-

cumstances.

“NIOC Texas unit cohesion and morale has suffered under the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions,” Schley said.

“The NIOC Texas Navy Day Ball Committee thought creatively to host an event that would allow us to collectively come together to recognize our Service’s history and heritage. The excited undertone around the command in anticipation of the Navy Day Ball is something that until now has been missing all of 2020.”

Sailors throughout the command voiced their appreciation for the opportunity to relax and enjoy a night of commemoration and celebration.

The Expeditionary Sea Base USS Hershel “Woody” Williams (ESB 4) joined NATO Allies and partners for French-led exercise Grand African Navy’s Exercise for Maritime Operations (NEMO) 2020 in the Gulf of Guinea, Oct. 5-9, 2020.

More than 30 ships and aircraft from 14 nations participated in the week-long exercise, which included more than 20 scenarios on combatting illegal fishing, piracy, drug trafficking, and pollution, as well as rescue at sea.

“Participating in Grand African NEMO alongside our Allies and partners has been an incredibly rewarding experience,” said Capt. David L. Gray, commanding officer, Hershel “Woody” Williams, Blue Crew. “It is vitally important for our countries to work together in

the Gulf of Guinea to improve maritime domain awareness in order to fight malign activity, ensure the maritime security, and protect the blue economies of our West African partners.”

The French Navy conducts three to four regional naval exercises annually as part of the African NEMO exercise series, which culminates in the major annual exercise Grand African NEMO. Starting in 2013, the exercise series trains on the collective efforts to establish maritime security and stability in the Gulf of Guinea.

“Thanks to a painstaking preparation and a high level of involvement, we collectively achieved most of the objectives at stake,” said French Vice Adm. Olivier Lebas, commander in chief of the French Navy in Atlantic (CECLANT). “I want to salute all the participating units for their outstanding performance.”

nts included Benin, Brazil, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, France, Gabon, Gambia, Guinea, Italy, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Togo, and the United States.

The United States serves as co-secretariat of the G7++ Friends of Gulf of Guinea Group for 2020, with Gabon serving as co-secretariat. The G7++ Friends of Gulf of Guinea Group helps secure the Gulf of Guinea against the threats of piracy, armed robbery, and other illicit maritime activities. By creating the conditions for improved maritime security, this group fosters prosperity and economic growth for all countries along the Gulf of Guinea.

No boardings or personnel transfers were conducted during the training evolution as a precaution against COVID-19.

The U.S. Navy routinely trains with allied and partner nations in order to enhance maneuverability capabilities and

interoperability by establishing communication and safety standards that strengthen regional maritime security.

Hershel “Woody” Williams recently completed tracking and maneuvering exercises with Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Senegal, Cabo Verde, and Morocco. The ship is on a regularly-scheduled deployment to the U.S. Naval Forces Africa area of operations and is a key element in integration between U.S. Navy and Marine Corps operations, especially Marine aviation and support to amphibious operations.

Other operations and training the ship can conduct include support to Special Operations, command and control, and staging of equipment and other assets, as directed. The ship will be a long-term presence assigned to the U.S. Africa Command mission set and will support security cooperation missions and operations in and around the African continent.

U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts joint and naval operations in order to support regional allies and partners and U.S. national security interests in Europe and Africa.

The Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship USS Gabrielle Giffords (LCS 10) executed a passing exercise (PASSEX) with El Salvadoran naval counterparts in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, Oct. 6.

PASSEXs are unit exercises requiring cooperation, communication and interoperability between two or more navies, testing advanced ship maneuvering and tactics. PASSEXs afford the opportunity for partner nations to develop a greater trust, understanding and respect for each other’s unique capabilities all while improving crews’knowledge and demonstrating shared tactics.

El Salvador had five ships participating in the event alongside USS Gabrielle Giffords. “We as a crew feel honored to have the opportunity to learn from our El Salvadoran counterparts,” said Cmdr. Rion W. Martin, commanding officer of Gabrielle Giffords. “This exercise enables our forces to refine our maritime skills and continue to strengthen the relationship with El Salvador.”

For the Sailors aboard participating ships, it was also their chance to improve their skills with their El Salvadoran counterparts sailing alongside. The forces conducted division tactics (DIVTACS), a series of tactical shipboard movements and communications checks.

"The El Salvadoran Naval detachment’s performance and bearing throughout this exercise was in line with the highest traditions of Naval Service. I am honored to have had the opportunity to strengthen our partnership and work together with another exceptionally professional Navy. I look forward to future exercises and cooperative opportunities with the El Salvadoran Navy.” said Lt. Killingsworth, Gifford’s Officer of the Deck during the exercise.

USS Gabrielle Giffords is deployed to the U.S. 4th Fleet area of operations to support Joint Interagency Task Force South’s mission, which includes counter illicit drug trafficking in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific.

U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command/U.S. 4th Fleet supports U.S. Southern Command’s joint and combined military operations by employing maritime forces in cooperative maritime security operations to maintain access, enhance interoperability, and build enduring partnerships in order to enhance regional security and promote peace, stability and prosperity in the Caribbean, Central and South American region.

Nimitz Carrier Strike Group conducts port visit in Bahrain From USS Nimitz (CVN 68) Public Affairs MANAMA, BAHRAIN

Elements of the Nimitz Carrier Strike group, including the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68), Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 17 and guided-missile cruiser USS Princeton (CG 59) pulled into Manama, Bahrain for a scheduled port visit in support of logistics and maintenance Oct. 7-11.

This marks the first time a U.S aircraft carrier has visited Bahrain under coronavirus (COVID-19) mitigations, and was made possible due to close coordination between the U.S. Navy and Kingdom of Bahrain.

While this was a working port visit, Sailors and Marines had a number of opportunities to rest and unwind in designated areas on the pier. These activities were planned and carried out in full compliance with the Centers for Disease Control and

Prevention, Department of Defense and host nation requirements.

The ships were also able to utilize the Bahrain Navy Exchange’s “Downrange Program”, which allows personnel to purchase items such as food and incidentals while remaining in a quarantine status.

The ships have been deployed since July in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operation and have been operating in the Arabian Gulf since Sept. 18 in order to provide additional support to regional and coalition partners, including support to Operation Inherent Resolve.

“The Sailors and Marines of Carrier Strike Group 11 have worked tirelessly alongside regional partners to demonstrate our commitment to the free flow of commerce, freedom of navigation, and regional maritime security,” said Rear Adm. Jim Kirk, commander of CSG11. “We are grateful for the support from the Kingdom of Bahrain for our port call.”

Seventy years ago, the “Peanuts” comic strip by then-obscure St. Paul, Minnesota cartoonist Charles M. Schulz made its debut in just seven newspapers around the world. Schulz’s strip and the award-winning TV specials that featured his work turned “Peanuts” into a worldwide phenomenon that still runs in many papers — despite the fact that Schulz died more than 20 years ago.

The “Ripley’s Believe It or Not!” comic panel runs an item of the Schulzes’ family dog, Spike, who eats all sorts of strange items with no ill effects. The item is accompanied by a drawing by Charles “Sparky” Schulz, age 14. It‘s his first published work.

Schulz adds his first Black character, “Franklin,” to the strip.

Apollo 10 launches with its command module named “Charlie Brown” and its lunar module named “Snoopy.”

“Peanuts” makes its debut in seven newspapers: The Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the Denver Post, the Seattle Times, the Allentown (Pa.) Call-Chronicle and the Bethlehem (Pa.) Globe-Times. Schulz is paid $90 for his first month’s worth of strips.

Charlie Brown first unsuccessfully tries to kick a football — this will become an annual running gag. For this first time, however, the ball was held by Violet, not Lucy, who has yet to appear in the strip.

New Asphalt Art Project Brings Norview Community Together From The City of Norfolk NORFOLK, VA

Local artist, Mensah Bey, will be working with community volunteers to complete, Gathering in Abundance, a street mural on Bland Street near the Five Points Intersection in the Norview neighborhood. The 100’ long, brightly colored artwork draws inspiration from West African Adinkra symbolism. Ideas of unity, togetherness, abundance, and cooperation are used to inspire growth in community, business, and relationships. The artwork also uses pedestri-

A large hourglass shape that symbolizes changing time anchors the design. As the world was affected by COVID-19 in 2020, we all dealt with shifts in our daily lives and relationships. This design, in part, acknowledges and embraces change and hopes to encourage and support the neighborhood and area businesses. Flower symbols are placed in accordance with social distancing rules for group activities, giving 10 or more feet of space between individuals if standing on each shape.

This project is supported by a grant from the Bloomberg Philanthropies Asphalt Art

Initiative which helps cities use art and community engagement to improve street safety and revitalize public space, with funding awarded to Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Virginia and Norfolk Arts. Three streets, one in each of the three Norfolk Police Patrol Divisions will eventually be painted. The project continues the work of the Cops and Kids Eating (CAKE) program and will offer a chance for the police to engage residents and embrace the communities where they work. The events will not only beautify and enliven neighborhoods but will increase police-community trust.

9 Tips for Keeping Your Relationship Strong and Healthy From Military Onesource

Relationships are like military missions in that they require strategy, foresight and effort. With life pulling you in different directions, it’s important to maintain your focus and know how to feed your relationship so it continues to thrive. Here are some tips, techniques and resources to help keep your relationship strong.

Relationship tips Work on communication skills. Strong relationships are built on effective communication. Make an effort to really listen to each other and share both positive and negative feelings to keep the environment honest and open. Some people use a phone call during the day to settle family business, so they’re free to enjoy time together when they get home. Stay connected by exploring new ways to expand and improve your communication skills.

Do regular maintenance. Occasionally, take the pulse of your relationship to exam-

ine what’s working, what isn’t and what you both can do to strengthen your connection.

Do you wish spending time together was a higher priority? Do you share the household work? Discuss the changes that will bring you into harmony and decide together on the compromises you’re willing to make.

Adjust your expectations. Accept yourself, your spouse and your relationship as they exist today. It’s natural to want the honeymoon phase to last forever. But people and relationships change over time, and each new milestone brings different dynamics and routines.

Create rituals. Routine and rituals can help hold a relationship together. A goodbye kiss before work, breakfast in bed with the crossword puzzle on weekends, weekly date nights or a walk after dinner are little things that, over time, become the glue in a healthy relationship.

Plan dates and surprises for each other.

Romance should be an ongoing part of your relationship, not just special occasions.

Take turns planning dates or other surprises to keep your relationship exciting. You could rent some kayaks, get concert tickets for your partner’s favorite band, or turn your dining area into a fancy restaurant to wine and dine your partner when getting home from work. Be thoughtful in your plans and consider what your spouse enjoys.

Plan for roadblocks. You won’t always agree on everything. Think about and discuss situations you know cause friction, and plan to treat one another with respect before a disagreement happens. Use “I” statements and keep your focus on the issue at hand.

Get into the habit of looking for your spouse’s positive traits and showing appreciation.

Give each other space. Your relationship will be stronger and more interesting if you give your spouse time and space without you. Remember, one person can’t possibly meet all your needs. Both you and your spouse must keep and nurture outside friendships and interests.

Be active together. A couple that works out together stays together. Exercising with your partner is not only a fun way to get in shape, it helps you feel better about yourselves, which, in turn, strengthens your relationship.

The best caramel apple toppings include anything salty or crunchy to contrast the sweet, gooey caramel or anything chocolatey because chocolate +

caramel is a match made in dessert heaven. It’s the perfect fall dessert recipe!

How do you keep caramel from sliding off apples?

There are a couple ways to ensure your delicious caramel sticks to the apples: First, wash and dry the waxy coating off the apples, which can prevent the caramel from sticking, and make sure the apples are completely dry. Cold apples can also keep that

caramel from sliding, so consider popping the apples in the refrigerator for a few minutes until cold to the touch.

In medium saucepan, combine caramels and water. Cook, stirring, on medium-low until caramels are completely melted and smooth.

Slightly tip pan at an angle and dip 1 apple into caramel mixture, rotating to cover completely. Spin to help excess caramel drip off and scrape caramel off bottom of apple, then immediately press toppings onto top or bottom of caramel and transfer to prepared baking sheet. Repeat with remaining apples, caramel and toppings. Refrigerate until set, 10 to 15 min.

BaconRoasted Potatoes

Creamy potatoes, crispy bacon, and a hint of fresh thyme makes a stellar side in the air fryer in under 30 minutes.

Ingredients 1 1/2 lb. small new potatoes (about 32), halved 4 sprigs thyme, plus 1 tsp thyme leaves 1 tbsp. olive oil Kosher salt and pepper 3 slices bacon 3 medium shallots, cut into 1/4-in. wedges 1 tbsp. white or regular balsamic vinegar 2 tsp. whole-grain mustard Directions In large bowl, toss potatoes and thyme sprigs with oil, ½ tsp salt and ¼ tsp pepper. Add to air fryer and top with bacon. Air-fry at 400°F until bacon is crisp, 6 to 12 minutes. Transfer bacon to paper towel and let cool before breaking into pieces.

Shake potatoes and continue to air-fry 8 minutes.

Add shallots to basket with potatoes, toss to combine and air-fry until vegetables are golden brown and tender, 8 to 12 minutes. more.

Meanwhile, in large bowl, whisk together vinegar, mustard and thyme leaves. Transfer cooked vegetables to bowl, adding any oils from bottom of basket, and toss to combine; fold in bacon.

It takes more than just awareness to respond to someone showing signs of distress. It takes conviction of care, compassion, and competence to help that someone in need, which describes precisely what Hospitalman Grace Pridmore did.

Pridmore, assigned to Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command (NMRTC) Bremerton Detachment Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, was acknowledged for her selfless effort by Capt. Shannon J. Johnson, NMRTC Bremerton commanding officer, for identifying another sailor at risk and taking quick action to help get the sailor to the appropriate level of care, possibly saving a life.

“I knew my friend had been going through a lot since she arrived to her command and sadly her condition got worse as time went on” said Pridmore, of Kellyville, Oklahoma, and a 2019 graduate from Kellyville High school.

“I saw her well-being starting to quickly depreciate. Seeing this problem rapidly spiral out of control, I knew I had to be there for her as much as I possibly could,” explained Pridmore. “She fully explained everything she

was going through, and I took quick action to get her to someone with the appropriate level of training to help her. I knew from my training that this was the right decision. I contacted my chain of command for additional guidance to ensure we were complying with the COVID-19 guidelines.”

Pridmore declares her chain of command went above and beyond – just as she did to help out the sailor in need. “I stayed with her until she got transferred to higher care. I continued to talk and visit with her as she was receiving this care so she wouldn’t be alone. With the resources and training my chain of command provided me I knew I could be the friend to help her. I will always stick by her side no matter how hard times get,” stated Pridmore.

During the ongoing effort to help stop the spread of COVID-19, Pridmore has also found herself providing daily support against the pandemic, from directing traffic to assuring personal protection equipment is worn in order to ensure worker and patient health is maintained.

“At the clinic, we continue to see patients during this time. I ensure that our employees, active duty and civilian, remain healthy to go

to work. Without them the shipyard could not operate properly, so their health is extremely important,” said Pridmore.

Although Pridmore has only been part of Navy Medicine for approximately one year, her interest in the career field has been long term. During high school, she attended Central Technology Center, a vocational school, for additional nursing and medical education and training.

“I have been interested in the medical field since as long as I can remember. I have been actively chasing this goal since I was a junior in high school, getting my certified nursing assistant, certified medical assistant, and phlebotomy licenses before I graduated high school. I’d seen other students in my school make the decision to join the Navy. I started researching everything the Navy had to offer. I didn’t have any money for college, and I didn’t want to be in debt so this just made sense to me. I could become a corpsman, and do what I love then eventually get a degree,” related Pridmore, convinced that the Navy was for her.

“The Navy to me seemed like the best route for medical in comparison to the other

branches,” continued Pridmore. “I also see it as a steppingstone to my bigger goals of the future, like becoming a registered nurse. Being in the military was a way for me not to do the traditional thing and go straight to college after high school, but I get the opportunity to travel and learn about life.”

Pridmore attests her personal story is simple, growing up in a ‘very small town’ in Oklahoma with her mom and sister, proving herself in school and employed by age 16 as a waitress until entering the Navy.

“I have always put my full effort into everything I do, that’s how I was raised. I’ve been blessed enough to be surrounded by people that love and support me and made me into the person I am today. They taught me good moral values that I always keep in mind,” said Pridmore, adding that Navy Medicine has shown what it takes to be in her chosen field.

“I have gained leadership skills and learned how to push myself. You can’t get this kind of experience anywhere else,” Pridmore said. “I find it very gratifying that I can make people feel safe in their workplace and the satisfaction of helping others to feel safe in their occupation.”

When asked to sum up her experience with Navy Medicine in one sentence, Pridmore replied, “Life’s not about how hard of a hit you can give, it’s about how many you can take and keep moving forward.”

Pilot DoD/VA hearing program virtually trains technicians

According to the National Institutes on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, approximately 37.5 million American adults aged 18 and over report some trouble hearing.

To help to improve service member and veteran access to hearing health care, the Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs recently initiated a pilot program designed to train by virtual means more than 5,000 hearing technicians.

The DoD-VA Hearing Technician Training and Certification Program is a Joint Incentive Fund pilot project initiated by the DoD Hearing Center of Excellence in 2019, to train hearing technicians to the nationally recognized standard of the Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC). The pilot will also seek to demonstrate the efficacy of distributed online training, and if it is as beneficial as onsite training for this particular course work.

“The DoD and VA hearing technician course is leading the way in establishing a distributed learning CAOHC course,” said Dr. Theresa Schulz, prevention division chief for the center. “If successful, this will become another effective way for the audiology community to conduct CAOHC-approved courses.”

According to Schulz, training to the national CAOHC standards ensures that the course meets best practices in hearing health care delivered across the continuum from service member to veteran status. Course graduates who pass the standardized exam receive CAOHC-approved certification that meets Occupational Safety and Health Administration and VA Office of Disability and Medical Assessment requirements.

The initial pilot training focuses on Army and VA hearing technicians. According to the center’s Dr. Kathy Gates, the pilot program has already graduated 187 Army hearing technicians and 60 from the VA. Gates, who helped to

design the training, also stated that recertification is required every five years.

Hearing technicians are trained and certified to perform basic hearing health duties, such as conducting air conduction audiograms (hearing tests), hearing protection device fittings, and hearing health education. Hearing technicians working for the DoD also support the hearing conservation mission, and those who graduate can serve as Occupational Hearing Conservation technicians. This certification enables them to administer air conduction threshold testing using the Defense Occupational Health and Environmental Readiness System-Hearing Conservation (DOEHRS-HC) system, which collects, maintains, compares and reports hearing readiness, deployment, and hearing conservation program data for DoD personnel. They also provide hearing protection training and hearing health education to support the hearing conservation mission.

Essy Sanchez, an Army civilian hearing technician from Fort Carson, Colorado, attended a virtual class in August.

Sanchez said the experience was very helpful: “I found the information regarding the hearing protection and patient education very engaging and useful in helping me develop my knowledge. This course increased my confidence in my job and I was able to immediately return to the clinic and

apply what I learned to my duties.”

Schulz explained that with more hearing technicians certified to perform these duties, she believes it will free up time and enable DoD and VA audiologists to focus on more complex audiology cases, resulting in increased access to care.

So far, DoD and VA instructors have conducted six courses since the program kicked off in April 2020. The Army Hearing Program will continue to offer classes every other month through FY21 beginning in November 2020, according to Army Lt. Col. John Merkley, Army Hearing Program manager with the Army Public Health Center. He added that the last virtual DoD class, held August 24-28, trained 45 Army, Navy, and Air Force students from around the globe.

Schulz added that as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, other CAOHC course directors have developed and implemented their own online training courses. “Results indicate this model is successful in providing the didactic portion of the course. Based on current changes we face with the COVID-19 national emergency, the online hearing technician training and certification course is timely and we believe it will become a new hybrid model approach to training.”
