The Navy Exchange Service Command recognized its 2022 Navy Lodge Program award winners during a virtual meeting on September 13. The awards were announced by NEXCOM’s Chief Executive Officer, retired Rear Adm. Robert J. Bianchi and Christopher Settelen, Vice President — Operations, NEXCOM Hospitality Group.
“Our 36 Navy Lodges and associates around the world work tirelessly to ensure guests receive exceptional hospitality, whether they stay one night or several weeks.” said Bianchi. ‘As the Navy’s single provider for all temporary duty and permanent change of station lodging, NEXCOM is an important quality of life benefit for our Navy warfighters, their families, as well as reservists, retirees and veterans,”
The Edward E. Carlson Award is given to the Navy Lodge that has the highest scores in guest and associate satisfaction, operations, quality assurance assessment and financial performance. The 2022 Navy Lodge of the Year grand winner is Navy Lodge San Diego. Navy Lodge North Island, California, is the large property winner and Navy Lodge Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, won in the medium property category. Along with the Carlson Awards, Navy Lodge General Manager and Associate of the Year award winners were also announced.
Being a trusted and collaborative leader with a focus on PREMIER guest service resulted in Ruben Rodriguez, maintenance worker, Navy Lodge Fort Worth, Texas, being selected as NEXCOM’s Navy Lodge Program Associate of the Year.
“Ruben embodies the true spirit of hospitality by creating a caring atmosphere and memorable experiences for all our guests,” said Secelia Donovan, General Manager, Navy Lodge Fort Worth. “In addition, his drive to improve work methods has resulted in real cost savings to our lodge as well as the Navy Lodge Program. Ruben truly goes above and beyond every day to support our Navy Lodge and our guests.” NEXCOM’s Navy Lodge Program General Manager of the Year is Dominic Lewis, Navy Lodge Mayport, Florida. Lewis’s very high standards and expectations for taking care of his associates as well as providing PREMIER guest service to his guests attributed to his winning the award.

How residents can help protect local waterways

Have you ever wondered what you can do to help protect the rivers, streams, and waterways near your home? In addition to servingasourdrinkingwatersupplies, these water bodies also provide us with various recreationalactivitiesandbeautifulscenery
This article is the first of a four-part series to provide you with more information on the common sources of pollution from our everyday activities and, more importantly, habits that you can adopt to prevent this pollution
Stormwater runoff results when rain cannot soak into the ground because of impervioussurfacessuchasroadsandrooftops Stormwater pollution results when stormwaterpicksup, carries, anddischarges various pollutants into storm drains or ditches, and ultimately into the downstreamwaterways.Pollutantsincludeitems such as pesticides, fertilizers, construction site sediments, pet waste, litter, and other items Prevention of stormwater pollution

Preventcontaminationofdrinkingwater sources
Protect our precious water resources for recreationalactivitiessuchasfishing, swimming, andboating
Protectplantandanimalhabitats
Preserve the natural beauty of our landscape
First, it is important to understand the
differencebetweenthesanitarysystemand the storm drain system. The illustration shows how water from our sinks, showers and bathtubs, clothes washing machines, and dishwashers all enter the sanitary system via pipes that are connected to a wastewater treatment plant. Pollutants from these waters are then removed by the treatment plant processes before being discharged.
By contrast, stormwater, which runs off our rooftops, driveways, roads, and lawns, enters into the storm drain system and dischargesdirectlytonearbystreams, lakes orbayswithoutreceivinganytreatment.

Common sources of stormwater pollution from our lawns include pet waste, fertilizers, pesticides, lawn clippings and leaves, andothersubstanceswhichmaybe leftuncovered(suchasdirtpiles saltpiles paints oils etc.). In addition, car maintenance activities such as oil changes and car washing can contribute to stormwater pollution when oil and detergent run into thegutter Remembertocollectallusedoil and dispose of it properly When washing a car, it’s better to wash on grass, which helps to filter the contaminants or to use a commercial car wash.

WASHINGTON,D.C. Overthepasttwo years, Navy Child & Youth Programs (CYP) have been steadily shrinking its childcare wait list by increasing enrollment on base and growing capacity for childcare in the communitythroughtheNavyMilitaryChild Care in Your Neighborhood (MCCYN) fee assistance program. However, Navy CYP’s mosteffectivestrategyforgrowingcapacity has been increasing its cavalry of child care professionals, explained Maryann Coutino, directorofNavyCYP,duringtheDODChild CareSummitinAlexandria,VAonSeptember15
“Over the past year we’ve dedicated a lot of effort towards increasing enrollment through bolstering our work force with salary increases, recruitment and retention incentives, strategic marketing of our positions and childcare discounts for our
CYP Professionals,” said Coutino during thesummit’s‘ChildCareBestPracticesand Lessons Learned’ military services panel.
“In September of 2022, we had 76% of our child care billets filled and enrollment was at 70%capacity We’vesincegrownstaffing to 87%, which has allowed us to increase enrollment to 84% of our infrastructure’s capacity which is a great improvement but there’sstillmoreworktodo.”
Before they can work directly with children, new Navy CYP Professionals must complete 40 hours of standardized trainingand then additionalmandatorytraining for 15 Child Development Core Competencies within 24 months of onboarding This degree of training results in a particularly skilledworkforce, ensuringchildrenreceive anexceptionalqualityofcare.
“Our workforce of professionals touch the lives of children in so many different ways each day and the impact of that work reaches far beyond the classroom, often in
wayswewon’teversee,”saidCoutinoduring the Military Services Panel. “It’s important to me and to the Navy that our Child and Youthprofessionalsreceivetheappropriate compensation and respect for the essential worktheydo.”
During the panel discussion, Coutino wentontoexplainNavyCYP’stalentretentionefforts
“In order to retain top talent, we need to makesurewe’regivingourpeopletheright resourcesattherightlevels,”saidCoutino.
Navy CYP will soon roll out updates to its staffing model and increase opportunities in professional development to better support CYP professionals Some of these changes include efforts such as increasing the number of direct care staff and establishingadditionalmanagementpositionsto supportCYPprograms
“Our focus is to take care of the people who are taking care of our children,” said Coutino.“Byimprovingeducationopportu-

Hampton
Nobuntu represents a new generation of women wanting to celebrate & preserve their culture through art
Press Release
HAMPTON, Va. — Zimbabwean
female acapella group Nobuntu, an African concept meaning humbleness, love, unity, and family from a woman’s point of view, performs their vast repertoire of music on The American Theatre stage on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at 8 p.m.
Performances consist of pure voices, minimalistic percussion, and traditional instruments such as Mbira and authentic dance movements. “When we are exposed to communities unlike our own, we then begin to see the similarities that they share. Nobuntu is one of only a few woman groups in the Mbube genre of music and it’s important to celebrate that,” said Hampton Arts Education Manager Kristie Schuh. “Music has long been a medium that has been able to bring cultures together in times of
turmoil and peace. Everyone has a story that others can relate to, but it has to be found and explored first which is why it is important to attend this experience.”
The group has performed all around the world and been nominated for Best Musician of the Year at the Zimbabwe International Women Awards in 2015. Nobuntu has drawn international acclaim for its inventive performances ranging from traditional Zimbabwean songs to Afro Jazz to Gospel. As the opening premier performance at The American Theatre of the 2023-2024 season, this show promises to be a memorable start to the season.

Ask the Doc: Should my child get the HPV vaccine?
By:KenCornwell MHS Communications
Dear Doc: I’ve heard about HPV—I know it’s a sexually transmitted disease and can cause some health problems, but not much more. I have a 12-year-old daughter, and her pediatrician wants to give her the HPV vaccine This makes me really uncomfortable What is HPV? How important is it to get a vaccination? Is it safe for my child?
Capt. Concerned
Dear Capt Concerned,
You’re not alone! While many people have heard of human papillomavirus, or HPV, a recent study from the American Association for Cancer Research found U.S. adults are less aware of the link between HPV and certain cancers
We reached out to an expert to answer your questions: Dr Margaret Ryan is the medical director of the Defense Health Agency’s Immunization Health Division in the Pacific Region. She is a vaccine expert with a background in preventive medicine and infectious disease. Here is what Dr Ryan said:
Thanksforaskingthesegreatquestions.I understand your concern, but please know that HPV vaccines are safe and effective. I confidently recommend HPV vaccination for my patients and for my own children. HPV vaccination prevents very serious healthproblems, includingcertaincancers. When people become fully vaccinated before exposure to HPV, they may maintainprotectionagainstthesespecifichealth threatsfortherestoftheirlives
WhatisHPV?
HPV is a group of more than 200 related viruses that can cause lesions on the skin or mucus membranes, the lining of the mouthorgenitalareas Thevirusisthemost common sexually transmitted infection in theUnitedStatesandspreadsfrompersonto-personbydirectskincontactorintimate contactwithmucusmembranes.
SometypesofHPVvirusescausewart-like lesions on the skin or mucus membranes
Some of these HPV lesions may go away withouttreatment, whileothersmayrequire treatment, such as “freezing with liquid nitrogen. Some HPV lesions are unnoticeable, and some HPV lesions may appear and resolve multiple times in the infected person’slifetime.
There are 14 types of HPV considered “high-risk” because the lesions they cause canleadtocancer Infact, nearlyallcervical
cancers are associated with previous HPV infection. HPV-related cancers may occur in the mouth or throat on the genital area, in the anus in the vagina, or on the cervix.

HPVisaCommonInfection
It’s estimated that more than 90% of people who are sexually active, and not protected from HPV, will become infected with at least one type of HPV in their lifetime. Most infections will not cause serious healthproblems. However, evenwithgrowing understanding of HPV infections and prevention measures, there are many new casesofHPV-relatedcancereachyear Inthe U.S.,morethan35,000newcasesofHPV-relatedcancerarediagnosedeachyear Inthe world, it is estimated that at least 500,000 womenand60,000menwillbenewlydiagnosedwithHPV-relatedcancerthisyear

HPV vaccines are ideally given before a person has exposure to HPV. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that all children get the HPV vaccine at a well-child pre-teen visit between ages 9and12. Unvaccinated people diagnosed with HPV lesions, or even HPV-related cancer, may still benefit from vaccination The vaccine will not cure lesions or cancer, but it may prevent infection from other highrisk types of HPV viruses, and therefore additional health problems The vaccine is approved and available for adults up to age 45yearsold.

Y:Forthoseonthefence tryingtodecide to come or not bring the kids, what would youliketosaytothem?
F4: Hot Wheels are a part of everybody’s life It’s a toy that every boy and girl has grown up playing with and now they have a chance to see what we loved as kids come to life And it’s not just oh we get to see the cars but we get to see them in action do some crazy driving and jumps Also you get tomeettheHotWheeldrivers thefreestyle motocross riders, touch the cars, the tires andsomuchmore
Y: That’s a great transition to the Hot Wheels Crash Zone Pre-Show Party Can youtellusaboutit?
F4: The fans get to go down to the racetrack where all the action happens and the biggest question I get is where is all the dirt WeatHotWheels, wedon’tdodirt we run it on the concrete It makes for better donaughts and a cooler show when the lasersreflectoffthatsurface Thetrucksare 64 times bigger than what we played with. Thetiresalonearetallerthanme Andthen wealsohavelotsoffunactivities, gamesthat we play, dance contests, giveaways, just to mentionafew.
Y: There are two of you hosting Tell us aboutyourpartnerincrime
F4: Yes her name is Sierra Prue and she isamazing Shehasagreatrapportwiththe fans, the Hot Wheel drivers and Freestyle Motocross riders and her energy is infectious Sierra is super excited and like me, can not wait to meet all the amazing fans in Norfolkthisweekend.
Y:Sowhatdoesyourjobentail?
F4: I spend a day traveling get there FridaynightandSaturday Igettothearena about an hour and a half early, get all my stuffready, dothemiccheckandthesecond thedoorsareopen, weareallonfortheHot Wheels fans. From that point on, my workday is having fun, being a kid, playing with toys, talkingtopeopleaboutHotWheelsand monster trucks, always on a positive note andhelpingcreatememoriesforouramazingfans
Y:Whatisyourfavoritepartofyourjob?
F4: That’s easy, it is interviewing the drivers and the fans, giving away toys and the biggest thing we just added and I kinda created is that we do a big dance off at the end of the crash zone We include one of our drivers in the dance off and that part hasneverbeendonebefore.Everybodythat participatesinthedanceoffontheracetrack getstobeonthebigscreenbeforetheshow
Y: It’s a very physical job how do you prepareforit?
F4: I compete with my dad. I try to find out how many fans he has talked to and takenaphotowithandIusethattofuelme That’smybiggestmotivationbecauseIwant to know that I talked and took more photos and told more jokes with the fans than my daddid.
Y:Ihaveatwopartquestion:Whatisyour favoritepartoftheshowasaperformerand asafan?
F4: As a performer, my favorite part is dancing with the fans. It’s silly, funny and whenthemomordadpointtothebigscreen andthekidsseethemselvesonthere,it’sthe best When it comes to being a fan, I catch myselfallthetimeinthemiddleoftheshow because my job is to get people set up to be
seen on the big screen but I get distracted when freestyle happens because it’s so awesometowatchthesetrucksjumpupand crash cars and do the crazy things they do It’smyfavoritepart Asonetruckcomesout and sets the bar, the next truck comes out and gets crazier and crazier and all the fans are losing themselves in that moment and experienceittogether.
Y:Howaboutapinchmemomentortwo?
F4:Forme,thebiggestpinchmemoment was walking out to start the show in front of thousands and thousands of people and whenyousay,Areyouready?Andthatarena erupts and you know they are answering to you. It gives me shivers up my spine and goosebumpchills It’sthemostunrealthing thatIhaveeverbeenapartof One more personal note that I would like to add is that the one thing that makes
the show so easy and fun is because everybody on the tour is friends and family and everyone’s goal is to entertain our fans and deliverthebestshowpossible Wehavesuch an amazing team. From the people who set everything up to those calling the shots WhatmakesmyjobeasierforexampleisRey and Mickie and the whole track crew and ofcourseallthedriversandfreestylemotocross riders. The dealwasthatIauditionforasemesterandIf Idon’tgetanything, thenIgobacktoschool next semester I am so blessed to be able to
say that I have been very blessed to have been working ever since School was and is very important to me so when I wasontheroadwith Dreamgirls back in 2008, I did finish school online and I was able to get a degree based on my work experience as I was touring with DreamgirlsandAin’t Misbehavin.
Those first opportunities that I got to do In Ain’t Misbehavin’Igottodowith RubenStuddardand we became Grammy nominated individually because of our work. It was really, really special and I have been blessed to have been a part of incredible productions that have been lifechangingnotonlyformyselfandthecast but also for the people who got to experienceitintheaudience MuchliketheColor Purple where I played the role Squeak and that’s where I got my Emmy. That story continuestobethegiftthatkeepsongiving in my life and I am super dooper grateful forit.

When we were in The Color Purple together, we became good friends AfterTheColorPurple,Ididn’thave ajobandsheinvitedmetobeabackground singer with her and from that opportunity came others and one of them was singing background for Stevie Wonder, as well as Christina Agulera. Stevie Wonder was an outrageous and still very much a pinch me momenttobeonastagewithalegendsuch as him We do not have many legends left, and he is one of the most legendary greats thatwilleverexist.
Another great wow moment was my first time on TV as an actor was in Genius: ArethawhereIplayedErmaFranklin, sister of Aretha. I have been on a journey of auditioning for TV roles for a very long time for all different types of roles from guest stars or series regulars thinking that my first time on TV, I would have a few lines here and there. So my very very very first time onTVasanactorwasinthisproductionand I was a series regular Courtney B. Vance played my father and Pauleta Washington who is Denzel Washingtons’s wife played my grandmother and they taught me how to do TV Not just the acting but also how to deal with the process, the business part, they literally held my hand and taught me everythingaboutmyfirsttimeontelevision andIwillforeverbegratefultobothofthem.
