USS JOHN C. STENNIS, AT SEA
Rock band Taking Back Sunday visited the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) and performed a concert for Sailors in the ship’s hangar bay, Jan. 11. The visit, sponsored by Navy Entertainment, gave band members Eddie Reyes (rhythm guitar), Adam Lazzara (lead vocals), John Nolan (lead guitar), Shaun Cooper (bass guitar) and Mark O’Connell (drums) a chance to experience aircraft

I make sure all of my Sailors are ready to go and the assistance we received from the staff here has been so important in ensuring the health of my people. Thank you all very much and thank you for the continuing support of the fleet.” The accomplishment fits in perfectly with Navy Medicine’s goals of readiness, value and jointness. Caring and Sharing Program representatives at Naval Submarine Base New London donated more than 800 pounds of canned food items to the United Way of Southeastern Connecticut in Groton, Jan. 11. Program representatives continued their long-standing tradition of donating non-perishable food items not used in the annual prepared boxes provided to military members and their families during the recent holiday season. The Caring and Sharing Program began collecting food items last November. Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class (SW/EXW) Jason Perry, assigned to Commander, Submarine Group 2, assisted in overseeing the annual program and reflected on continuing the tradition of sup-
Flu season arrived early in the U.S. this year with seasonal influenza cases double the numbers experienced at this time last year. For the fourth straight week, flu is categorized as widespread in Virginia, which the Virginia Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cite as the highest category of flu activity. For those who have not had their annual flu vaccine, it’s not too late. Naval Medical Center Portsmouth and its branch clinics have flu shots and the nasal vaccine FluMist available for TRICARE beneficiaries who have not yet been immunized this season. Influenza vaccine is available at the following locations: NMCP Immunization Clinic, Monday through Friday – 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Oceana Branch Clinic, Monday through Friday – 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Adm. Joel T. Boone Clinic, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday – 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday – 8 a.m. to Noon; Naval Station Norfolk Clinic, Monday through Friday – 8 to 11 a.m. and Monday through Thursday 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.; Northwest Clinic, Monday through Friday – 7 to 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 2 p.m.; and Yorktown Clinic, Monday through Friday – 8 a.m. to Noon, and Monday through Thursday – 1 to 2:30 p.m. TRICARE Prime Clinics in Chesapeake and Virginia Beach offer flu vaccine by appointment only, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call (866) MILHLTH (1-866-645-4584) to schedule an appointment. While not 100 percent effective, a flu vaccine is the first and best way to prevent influenza. Antiviral drugs are a second line of defense to treat the flu once someone gets sick. It’s important that antivirals be used early to treat people who are very sick with the flu and have a greater chance of getting serious flu complications, either because of their age or because they have a high risk medical condition. Most otherwise healthy people who get the flu do not need to be treated with antiviral drugs. Antivirals can only be prescribed by a doctor and can lessen symptoms and shorten the time someone is sick by one or two days. They also can prevent serious flu complications, like pneumonia. In an effort to protect patients, visitors and medical staff from the spread of flu, effective Jan. 9, hospitals and healthcare systems in Hampton Roads (including NMCP and its clinics) strongly recommend all patients and visitors to wear a mask upon entering hospitals, freestanding emer-

carrier operations at sea, as well as entertain Sailors and thank them for their service. This is the first time the band has performed on an aircraft carrier. While aboard, they spent time touring various spaces, visiting with Sailors and signing autographs. “It’s pretty surreal for us,” said Lazzara. “Just watching how everything operates is pretty incredible. There’s a lot of moving parts on the ship and seeing it run so efficiently is impressive.” Culinary Specialist 3rd Class Francesca Cerniglia said that it was a great opportu-
nity to get a concert T-shirt signed by the band during the visit. “I didn’t expect to get the shirt signed when I saw them play at the Vans Warped Tour a couple years ago, let alone while we were at sea,” she said. “It’s nice to give back to those who are making sacrifices and being on a ship is one of the biggest thrills we’ve had in our lives,” said Lazzara. The band played a number of songs including “Liar,” “Make Damn Sure” and “You’re So Last Summer.”

Branch Health Clinic (BHC) Naval Station Norfolk Dental Clinic and USS Nicholas (FFG 47) had large cause to celebrate, Jan. 11, during a ceremony at the clinic honoring Nicholas as the 200th consecutive ship since Sept. 11, 2001, to be deployable with the crew at or above 95 percent Operational Dental Readiness. Ships with such high dental readiness minimize their risk of a crew member experiencing a dentalrelated emergency while deployed. The clinic’s Fleet Dental department also staff mobile dental vans to provide dental services pierside. This minimizes disruption to ships’ crews while ensuring ships without dental teams aboard are ready to sail. Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) and Nicholas leadership joined BHC Norfolk staff to mark the clinic’s milestone. “This day speaks volumes to the dedication of the staff here,” said Rear Adm. Elaine C. Wagner, Commander, NMCP and Navy Dental Corps chief. “As the Dental Corps chief, I am particularly honored to be here with you celebrating the 200th
