The Center for Personal and Professional Development (CPPD) headquarters staff attended all hands training to talk about a topic of high interest to the command – Sexual Assault Awareness, Prevention and Response (SAPR), April 4. The CPPD team is highly dedicated to stopping sexual assaults and has worked since 2011 to develop SAPR-Leaders (SAPR-L), SAPR-Fleet (SAPR-F) training videos and facilitation guidance. “This training isn’t simply a ‘check
in the box’ for us at CPPD – we’re personally vested in its success,” said CPPD Executive Director Doug Kibbey. “We’ve put massive energy and countless hours into SAPR training products that we believe are moving the needle toward a Navy-wide climate that refuses to tolerate any behaviors on the continuum of harm that could lead to a sexual assault.” This year’s Navy Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAM) campaign focuses on courage and CPPD headquarters is holding two training sessions in April for its staff in order to cover all five themes of SAAM.
Senior Chief Interior Communications Electrician Claudia Seawright, CPPD SAPR point of contact and course manager for Bystander Intervention (BI) conducted the all hands training attended by military and civilian employees. The first week’s theme of “Courage to learn” included a discussion on the continuum of harm. “We’ve learned through SAPR-L/F and BI training the types of behaviors on the continuum of harm – things like sexual innuendos, inappropriate jokes

USS Arlington joins the fleet
The Navy announced that the annual Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana Air Show, which was to include an appearance by the Flight Demonstration Squadron the “Blue Angels,” is canceled as a result of budget shortfalls due to sequestration, April 9. Recognizing budget realities, current Department of Defense policy states that outreach events can only be supported with local assets at no cost to the government. This is one of many steps the Navy is taking to ensure resources are in place to support forces operating forward now, and those training to relieve them. The Navy believes there is value in inspiring future generations of Sailors and Marines by demonstrating the professionalism and capabilities of our naval aviation teams, and will continue aerial demonstrations in the future as the budget permits. “The Oceana Air Show highlights the tremendous partnership between the people the Hampton Roads area and our Navy team,” said Capt. Bob Geis, commanding officer, NAS Oceana. “It is unfortunate we must cancel the 2013 celebration due to the continuing budget challenges. Over the years, the city and many community agencies have developed strong partnerships with the Navy and the Air Show affords us an opportunity to highlight military service during the three-day event. However, until we finish our evaluation of what the current budget will support, with priority on operational and fleet readiness, we have no choice but to cancel the Air Show.” “We appreciate the community’s understanding during these uncertain times,” he continued. “I am also profoundly thankful for what the city and our community partners do for our service men and women each and every day.”

With an estimated crowd of more than 5,000 on hand, USS Arlington (LPD 24) was commissioned and joined the Navy’s fleet of 283 warships, in an emotional, patriotic ceremony, April 6. The ship is named for the county of Arlington, and honors the first responders and the 184 victims who died when American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001. “LPD 24 bears a name of great significance to our Navy and Marine Corps team,” wrote the ceremony’s keynote speaker, Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. James Amos, in his congratulatory letter to the ship. “LPD 24 will forever represent the courage, devotion and teamwork that characterized our military and first responders on that modern day of infamy.” Arlington is the eighth in Navy’s San Antonio-class of

The ship combines 21st century amphibious shipbuilding and warfighting technologies to support current and future Marine Corps aircraft and landing craft, capable of transporting nearly 1,200 Sailors and Marines into harm’s way. “As a son of a history teacher, I always teach our Sailors about our heritage,” said Arlington Commanding Officer Cmdr. Darren Nelson. “We are here to make sure no one ever forgets those who lost their lives that day giving us our name. It is our duty to have the strength to fight terrorism, honor those that have gone
