USS Vella Gulf enters US 6th Fleet

The guided-missile cruiser USS Vella Gulf (CG 72) entered the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations.

The ship departed Naval Station Norfolk April 23 for a regularly scheduled deployment in support of crucial defense operations in the Navy’s U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of operations.

Vella Gulf Sailors trained long and hard to ensure mission readiness prior to the journey across the Atlantic.

“Exiting an extended maintenance period, Vella Gulf’s crew worked at an exemplary level to meet all training and certification requirements,” Vella Gulf Commanding Officer Capt. Mark Oberley said. “Vella Gulf’s training cycle has produced steadfast professionals ready to fulfill the ship’s mission.”

Sailors from USS San Antonio (LPD 17) made a namesake visit to the south central Texas city and home of the Alamo, April 24-30.

Seven Sailors from the amphibious transport dock ship, including the Executive Officer, Capt. Edgardo Moreno and Command Master Chief Terry Wylie, spent seven days there visiting elementary schools, high schools and Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps students, being interviewed and participating in Fiesta San Antonio events throughout the week.

“I have enjoyed talking about our ship and crew, as well as our recent deployment, with the citizens of San Antonio,” Moreno said. “Our command’s motto is ‘Never Retreat, Never Surrender’. This motto honors the great city of San Antonio.”

The Sailors began their trip with high school visits to share their experiences and answer questions about their ship and the Navy. They visited with more than 150 students from Winston Churchill, Southwest and Memorial high schools.

“It was great talking to the high school students this week,” Aviation Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class Shawn Johnson said. “The students had loads of questions.

Later in the week, the Sailors visited Carl Wanke Elementary to read to kindergarten and first grade classes.

“It was so awesome that Sailors from a ship named after our great city visited with our students at our school,” Annalisa Brockhouse, a first grade teacher at Wanke said. “I think it is important, not only for our stu-

dents, but our community to be able to put a face with the people who are defending our country.”

The Sailors took to the basketball court and were honored before a Spurs NBA playoff game and participated all week in events of Fiesta San Antonio, better known as “Fiesta,” the city’s signature, annual event held across 11 days in April.

What started in 1891 as a oneparade event to honor the memory of the heroes of the Alamo

and the Battle of San Jacinto, has evolved into a celebration of this city’s rich culture.

“We’ve had so much fun participating in the parades and learning about the important events that are remembered during Fiesta,” Johnson said. “This city has welcomed us with open arms and made us feel like rock stars wherever we have gone during the festivities.”

On April 24, the Sailors took part in Navy Day at the Alamo, where Moreno was the event’s keynote speaker and administrated the oath of enlistment to more than 15 future Sailors.

“Other than the taking the oath at MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station), this was the only time we would take the oath before we become real Sailors,” Brandon Lee, a future Sailor from San Antonio said. “What an honor it was to be sworn in by the captain and in front of so many important leaders in the Navy.”

GW emphasizes reasons to wear PPE

As the crew of the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) rapidly approaches refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) maintenance period, new challenges and hazards present themselves.

The hangar bays are filled with civilian contractors and moving parts. The mess decks are unrecognizable. As new equipment and various tubes and piping are added to bulkheads and overheads, safety becomes crucial to the crew’s success.

George Washington has expanded its role in crew safety.

Particularly, hard hats, safety goggles and hearing protection are now mandatory uniform items aboard ship to keep pace with the increased dangers.

“We are in an industrial environment, which means work is constantly going on around the ship,” George Washington’s mishap report coordinator Electrician’s Mate (Nuclear) 2nd Class Sean Mok said. “People are

grinding, performing hot work, and working on the overheads where things could fall. A lot of shipyard systems are being added around the ship where people can walk into it. With all the work going on around the ship, it’s inherently more dangerous than our normal operations.

In an industrial environment, it’s very important to have a hard hat and goggles because you don’t know what work is going to be going on in your work space or where you’re transiting.”

In the injury reports last year, there were only two concussions reported through medical. However, in 2014, when GW went through a sixmonth maintenance period in Japan, eight concussions were reported. Mok said eye injuries can be difficult to track because they aren’t put in their own category of injury.

If someone cuts their eye, it’s noted in the cuts and lacerations category for tracking.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a concussion is a blow or jolt to the head that affects the way the brain works normally. It can hap-

pen from a car accident, hitting your head on something on the bulkhead, or even a fall. A majority of eye injuries result from small particles or objects striking the eye.

Safety department issued gear to the crew in order to ensure all crew members remain safe while performing daily tasks. They also issued out multiple types of safety gear depending on each Sailor’s work requirements.

“So we have three different types of work goggles,” Mok

said. “We have the regular safety glasses, the over the glasses which are a lot bigger than the other ones, and then we have goggles. The difference is that the goggles are like the ones we use for maintenance. They have an edge that forms a small seal against your face so if you’re doing something like deck work and you have really fine particulates that regular glasses won’t block those out, the ones with a seal will.”

Safety department often

polices the ship ensuring all Sailors are wearing the proper safety gear and not walking into harm’s way.

“We are here to make sure everyone is safe,” Mok said.

“We aren’t here to punish people for not wearing PPE (personal protective equipment).

We just don’t want people to get hurt. I think getting hurt is the worst punishment of all, because it’s so preventable.”

Mok said when people do get injured and go to medical, their department then fills out a report on how the injury happened. These reports are sent to the ship’s safety department and forwarded to the Navy Safety Center to be transferred into data. This data is kept approximately two to four years so if a Sailor gets out of the service and tries to receive disability for the injuries, the ship will have a record of what happened and when the injury occurred.

An article on www.concussion.wellicornell.org says although it is rare, concussions can result in symptoms lasting longer than six weeks, such as dizziness, headaches and difficulties concentrating.

Moderate to severe traumatic

brain injury can cause severe problems with attention and short-term memory, as well as difficulties performing tasks and feeling slower as a whole.

Long-term injuries not only impact Sailors directly, but also affect their families and future career options depending on the severity. When protective equipment isn’t used properly, it only heightens the risks of injuries and increases the potential for more serious and long-lasting effects.

“Safety is paramount,” Mok said. “Safety department is here to make sure people go home every day. We aren’t here to make things difficult and we are willing to work with people. But if you aren’t protecting yourself, we can’t protect you.”

Bataan remembers the Holocaust

The amphibious assault ship USS Bataan’s (LHD 5) heritage committee sponsored a Days of Remembrance ceremony, to close the ship’s Holocaust Remembrance week.

The committee built a Star of David wreath and set up a memorial, including historical information, to bring awareness and honor all those who suffered during the Holocaust.

The Sailors and Marines paid tribute by dropping off handmade flowers and cards throughout the week. The commemoration closed with a ceremony and military procession, where the wreath was taken from the mess decks and laid to rest in the ocean.

The Holocaust was a statesponsored systematic annihilation of European Jews

by Nazi Germany and its collaborators. From 1933 to 1945, more than six million Jews were murdered but the travesty did not stop there. Soviet prisoners of war, gypsies, Jehovah’s Witnesses, political dissidents, the physically and mentally disabled and homosexuals were also removed from their communities and suffered persecution under Nazi Germany. Though many lives were destroyed and family ties were lost, it is important to honor those who died unfairly as well as those who survived and lived to tell the tale.

Bataan Commanding Officer Capt. Eric Pfister swain’s Mate (Fuel) Hawa P. Riley, the heritage committee coordinator, believes it is important to remember this time in history.

“It is important that we understand that history still plays a role in military decisions today. We must remember the innocent lives lost before, during, and after World War II,” Riley said. “The Holocaust went down in history as one of the worst human rights violation of all times.”

Lt. j.g. Melanie Hafsadi, the combat information center officer aboard Bataan, participated in the ceremony. Hafsadi is Jewish and expressed how this memorial hits close to home.

“My family has been Jewish as far back as Judaism exists,” Hafsadi said. “My dad was born and raised in Israel and lives there still with my half brother and sister. He is a Sephardic Jew and my mom is an Ashkenazi Jew.” Hafsadi shared that for her, the Holocaust Remembrance is significant because we need to understand how and why the Holocaust happened in order to prevent something like

this from happening again in the future.

“Growing up, I learned about the Holocaust from school and my family,” Hafsadi said. “When I was young and lived in Israel, I would hear the two-minute siren go off and everyone would stop what they were doing to have a moment of silence (in remembrance); even cars would stop and the passengers would get out.”

The Commanding Officer of Bataan, Capt. Eric Pfister, also shared some thoughts during the ceremony. He invited us to look back and remember that fear and indifference can lead to hatred and creates and opportunity for evil to thrive.

“This is our opportunity to reflect on the impact of the Holocaust,” Pfister said. “We will reflect on the loss of these victims as well as the moral responsibilities of individuals, societies and government to remain vigilant against hatred, persecution and oppression.”

member the powerful effect of holding out a helping hand or even a positive comment can have on another person.

In 1980, Congress established the United States annual commemoration of the Holocaust known as the Days of Remembrance, which runs from April 23-30, to include Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom Hashoah) on April 24.

In closing Hasfsadi stated, “Israel is strong now, but we must not forget the problems of the past. The children that came out of the Holocaust have taught us the importance of taking care of each other for prevention of future genocides.”

The Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer and with higher temperatures and plenty of summer activities available in the Hampton Roads area, Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana personnel should take time to consider the safety aspects of this busy time of year and the opportunities and resources available to them to enjoy the coming months.

NAS Oceana’s Safety Office defines the 101 Critical Days of Summer as the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day each year.

During this time many more people, civilians and military alike, are participating in activities that could potentially be dangerous if precautions are not taken.

Lisa Asby, NAS Oceana’s Assistant Occupational Safety and Health Manager says in an effort to help prevent injuries from occurring and promote safety during this time of the year, several command training programs are scheduled to take place, including motorcycle safety courses and safety stand downs.

“We try to prepare the Sailors and marines at NAS Oceana for the summer months by promoting a mindset of risk management,” Asby said. “Recreational offduty injuries can be avoided by ensuring you are properly trained before engaging in a new activity or sports, wearing proper protective equipment, and practicing

operational risk management (ORM).”

In addition to recreational mishaps, traffic incidents are an important aspect to consider when off-duty. The warm weather increases the number of motorcycle drivers on the road, people travel to enjoy activities and locations within the Hampton Roads area and new or student drivers use the time off from school to travel and experience more road time.

“The warm weather and multitude of activities in the area encourage Sailors and marines to be more active, involved in the community and to try new activities or sports, and none of those are bad things,” NAS Oceana’s oncoming Command Master

Chief Lee Salas said. “We are trained to practice ORM, but without proper training and instruction, you won’t know how to effectively practice risk management when doing something that is new to you. We want for our Sailors and marines to keep safety in the forefront of their minds before engaging in any activity, especially if it is new to them.”

There are numerous safety tips to remember during the upcoming summer months, from water sports and recreation, to grilling and watching fireworks during the fourth of July. While not a comprehensive list, these are some important ‘quick tips’ to keep in mind as you plan your summer events: When outside try

to avoid thick woods, grass and puddles where poisonous plants, ticks and other insects gather and hide. Remember to apply repellent often and perform regular and thorough tick checks. Beaches are also a hazardous place, even if you are an experienced swimmer; always be aware of the risks and how to prevent them.

Always check the water conditions and be aware of possible rip currents which can pull you under and out to sea.

When caught in a rip current don’t panic or fight it simply swim parallel to the shore and work your way out of the current. When children are present, provide them with snug fitting floatation devices and pay close attention while near any body of water. Heat inju-

ries are very common among the 101 critical days of summer. To prevent heat exhaustion and stroke consume lots of water, avoid exercise and other vigorous outdoor activities during the hottest hours, and dress in light loose clothing. Summer though full of fun and excitement can be dangerous; so know the risks, be prepared, stay alert and have fun.

For those looking for activities to join in the area surrounding NAS Oceana, Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) continues to provide service members and their families with options to enjoy the summer and to stay involved in the command and surrounding community.

“For Sailors looking to get

a better understanding of the resources available to them through MWR, the best place to start is to attend one of our Family Fest events, the first of which is scheduled May 18,” NAS Oceana’s MWR Admin Assistant Karen Frazer said.

“The Family Fest’s are for the enjoyment of all service members in the area, every facility at NAS Oceana will have a tent, and will help you plan your summer with fun activities for you and family members you have in the area.”

The NAS Oceana Aeropines Golf Course, Liberty Center, softball field, gym, bowling center and the beaches at Dam Neck Annex have activities, events and competitions planned for any who wish to participate. All of NAS Oceana’s facilities and their various programs, events and activities are designed to enhance the quality of life of the Sailors and marines that serve at Oceana and live in the surrounding community.

“NAS Oceana and the surrounding Hampton Roads area has a great number of activities and new experiences available to those who seek them out,” Salas said. “I want everyone to be able to enjoy the area and their summer, but always keep yourself and your family prepared for a mishap. I want nothing more than to have every one of our Sailors and marines to return safe and with new adventures under their belt.”

Mesa Verde visits Souda Bay

USS Mesa Verde (LPD 19) and embarked Marines from the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) arrived in Souda Bay, Greece, for a scheduled port visit May 1.

During the port visit, the Mesa Verde is scheduled to conduct a change of command and engage in a community relations project with Naval Support Activity Souda Bay. The Sailors and Marines aboard Mesa Verde will also have an opportunity to visit local sites and learn about the local culture through tours organized by the ship’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation program. “The ofďŹ cers and crew of USS Mesa Verde are privileged to be able to enjoy the Greek culture of Crete and appreciate the support of the Greek Navy during our

While in theater, more than 4,000 Sailors and Marines of the ARG and MEU will train to share information, experience and work together for regional stability.

Military spouses honored at Heroes at Home ceremony

The contributions of military spouses were honored with speeches, award presentations and prizes on May 4 during the 13th annual Heroes at Home Military Spouse Appreciation and Awards luncheon in Norfolk.

Out of more than 85 nominees from the Hampton Roads area, 10 finalists, one runnerup and one winner were announced during the ceremony.

The 2017 Military Spouse of the Year is Heather Kuhn, spouse of Lt William Kuhn, USS Monterey, Naval Station Norfolk. The runner-up is Alicia Bourget, spouse of MSgt Brandon Bourget, ACC, Joint Base Langley-Eustis.

According to her award nomination, Heather Kuhn volunteers with numerous Family Readiness Groups, her children’s school and daycare, the United Way, the Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program, Fleet and Family Support Centers and the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS). She has volunteered 3,300 hours over 4.5 years with NMCRS, according to the nomination.

“We don’t mind getting paid in rainbows and butterflies,” Kuhn, a Navy spouse of nine years, said during an impromptu award acceptance.

“It’s the currency of volunteers.”

Along with the award, Kuhn received various prizes, including a grand prize vacation

package, courtesy of Member Travel Privileges of the USAA financial services company.

An Air Force spouse of 11 years, Alicia Bourget was nominated for her work with the Airman and Family Readiness Center at Langley Air Force Base, where she volunteers 20-30 hours each week and also for special events in the evenings and on weekends, according to her nomination.

She took the initiative to reinvigorate the Key Spouse program, including hand-painting welcome bags for newcomers, the nomination said.

Hosted by the Flagship newspaper and Military Newspapers of Virginia, the event was held at The Main, Norfolk’s newly opened downtown Hilton hotel. The awards were handed to the winners by Dorothy McAuliffe, spouse of Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, and Chris Scorby, spouse of Rear Admiral Jack Scorby, commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic.

McAuliffe emphasized the importance of military members, veterans and their families to the success of Virginia.

“Their contributions are hard to measure but so important to recognize,” she said in remarks during the ceremony.

In her keynote speech, Scorby said that she and her husband had “no clue” what they were getting into when he joined the military at age 23 after graduating as “average students from a state university.”

But, she said, because of the Navy, they became adults

and learned from other families. She recounted being told of the crash of a plane carrying two of their good friends at their first duty station. Going with officials to talk with their spouses, she said she remembers being told, “It’s your turn.”

She always keeps that in mind when stepping in to help other military families, which has become her passion, she said.

Years later, her husband was commanding the same squadron where he started and thinking about retirement when he got the opportunity to command the Navy Installations Command, she said.

Their 20th move brought them to Norfolk, where they support “fleet, fighter and family,” she said.

“Supporting families is not only the right thing to do, but the smart thing to do to retain talent,” she said.

Prepare for hurricane season that begins June 1 From Ready.Navy.mil

Hurricane season begins June 1 in Virginia. Make sure that you and your family are prepare by understanding hurricane terminology: Tropical depression—A system of clouds and thunderstorms with a defined surface circulation and sustained winds that do not exceed 38 mph.

Tropical storm—A system of clouds and thunderstorms with a defined surface circulation and sustained winds 39-73 mph.

Hurricane/Typhoon— A system of clouds and thunderstorms with a defined surface circulation and sustained winds 74 mph or higher.

Storm surge—An abnormal rise of water pushed ashore by a storm, over and above the predicted astronomical tide. Storm surges, which are often the greatest threat to life and property, are affected by a number of complex factors and can vary in magnitude despite hurricane categories.

For example, Hurricane Katrina, a category 3 hurricane, had a storm surge of 28 ft., while Hurricane Charley, a category 4 hurricane, had a storm surge of 6-8 ft.

Storm tide—A combination of storm surge with normal tide, increasing the amount of water (e.g., a 15-foot storm surge with a 2-foot normal tide creates a 17-foot storm tide).

One main program that will be assessed and implemented is a Navy Family Accountability and Assessment System (NFAAS) recall.

NFAAS is used following a disaster or other event to determine locations of affected family members and to manage, and monitor the recovery process for Navy personnel and their families who are affected by major man-made or natural disasters or widespread catastrophic events.

Twice a year, the Navy goes through a NFAAS system update where Sailors are required to log into the system to verify and update their personal contact information to include family names ad-

structure and/or some exterior walls.

Category 5—Winds exceeding 157 mph, 137 kt, 252 km/h, catastrophic damage will occur, high percentage of framed homes will be destroyed with total roof failure and wall collapse.

Category 3, 4, and 5 hurricanes are considered “major hurricanes.”

In the western North Pacific, the term super typhoon is used for tropical cyclones with sustained winds exceeding 150 mph.

Tropical Cyclone Condi-

tions of Readiness (TCCOR) are the Navy’s guidelines for estimating how long a region has and the actions necessary before it will be hit by destructive winds. Destructive winds are defined as winds of 58 mph or greater. At each TCCOR level, installations and tenant commands have set actions or checklists to complete prior to the storms arrival.

These checklists range from verifying recall procedures to closing facilities and sandbagging. Essential supplies can quickly sell out when a major storm is forecasted to hit the region, so it is vital for personnel to prepare for damaging storms before they establish themselves in the news cycle.

TCCOR 5—Indicates that we are in hurricane season. From June 1 to Nov. 30, all vulnerable installations should maintain at a minimum TCCOR 5 levels of readiness (note except Guam/Marianas — which maintains TCCOR 4 year round). This is not the absence of threat; it just indicates that any storm/hurricane is greater than 72 hours away.

TCCOR 4—Trend indicates possible threats of destructive winds are indicated within 72 hours.

TCCOR 3—Destructive winds of force indicated are possible within 48 hours.

TCCOR 2—Destructive winds of force indicated are anticipated within 24 hours.

Outdated contact information can delay the Navy’s ability to account for and provide assistance to affected personnel during an emergency situation putting Sailors and their families at further risk.

“In order to ensure timely and accurate accountability and to provide needed assistance in case of a man-made or natural disaster, Navy personnel uniformed (active and reserve), civilian, and contractors Outside Continental United States (OCONUS) are to ensure they have the most up-to-date contact and location information for themselves and their dependents,” said Beth Dickerson, the U.S. Fleet Forces Command Staff Navy Family Ac-

countability and Assessment System (NFAAS) Commanding Officer Representative. “Whether located here in Norfolk or other areas of the world where catastrophic weather or events may occur, the success of NFAAS enables accountability and ongoing assistance not only for our staff members, but their dependents as well.”

NAVADMIN 000/13 discusses the semiannual update and verification of personal information in NFAAS by all active duty and reserve Sailors, Department of the Navy civilian employees and OCONUS contractors.

Sailors and military civilians can log in to NFAAS at https://navyfamily.navy.mil to verify and update contact information for themselves and their family members.

Commanding officers are responsible to ensure compliance with this verification and the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations will review the extent to which all commands have provided their information.

According to the message, commands are also mandated to incorporate NFAAS updates into the command check-in and check-out process during permanent change of station moves.

“We’ve done two rounds of focus groups and after each we completed changes to the app and created content we thought Sailors would be interested in based on the feedback from the focus groups,” USFF sexual assault prevention and response officer Capt. Charles Marks said. “We made some pretty significant structural changes to the app, adding links to taxi services and things that we hope improve our Sailors’ experience with the app.”

easier. The updated taxi service feature allows users to call local taxi services that have been cleared to drive on base for more convenient pickup and drop off services for Sailors. Developers also added links to advertise and volunteer for community service projects giving Sailors the option to share information about local volunteer events and sign up.

As a part of the phase two pilot, program managers hosted focus groups to discuss new updates to the LiveSafe smartphone ap-

plication and usefulness to the fleet. During the discussions, Sailors spoke to LiveSafe representatives about their experiences using the application and ways to improve the application.

“In today’s world everyone is trying to be anonymous and this app is a great way to do that,” Yeoman 1st Class Brendan Little said.

“The best part is that Sailors can help prevent destructive behavior without confrontation.”

The application will continue to provide region-

specific maps displaying locations and hours for emergency services, Fleet and Family Support Centers, sexual assault response coordinators, legal services, and off-limits locations.

Content will be available even when WiFi or cell phone signal is disabled.

“The Navy is exploring different and innovative things in regard to reducing destructive behaviors. We know that these things impact readiness and we want to put the control in Sailors’ hands by giving them options for resources to make informed decisions and help out shipmates,” Marks said.

“It’s a theory that we are testing that LiveSafe can counter destructive behaviors by putting resources in Sailors’ hands while on liberty or away from the workplace.”

Once downloaded, users will have access to local and base emergency services and a special “Walksafe” feature allowing Sailors to temporarily share their GPS location with someone of their choosing. As they travel, the Sailors will be able to communicate with

their chosen person through a phone conversation or silently, depending on the circumstances. Once the Sailor has arrived at their destination and is free of possible dangers, the GPS tracking can be disabled.

All Sailors in Hampton Roads and Naval Station Rota are encouraged to download the app, use it, and provide feedback during periodic focus group meetings regarding the app’s use and ability. Sailor feedback has been and will continue to be a crucial part of the pilot program to ensure the Navy knows the shortfalls and issues with the program prior to its Navy-wide launch.

The app, developed by LiveSafe with the Navy, is available for free in Apple’s App Store and the Google Play store.

Understanding the risks and how to protect your electronic devices

The National Environment Agency estimates that Singapore receives an average of 168 thunderstorm days per year, making the country one of the most lightning-prone areas in the world. The prevalence of lightning poses an increased risk for weatherrelated damages, and many

housing residents have had their electronic devices ruined as a result of lightning strikes.

The public affairs department sat down with Navy Region Center Singapore Region Safety Manager Thomas Rea, to learn more about how lightning can affect electronic devices and what steps can be taken to mitigate the damage.

Question (Q): What are the different types of lightning strikes that can damage electronic equipment, and are there any safety measures already in place to mitigate the damages they can cause?

Answer (A): Lightning strikes fall into two categories: direct strikes to a building or the immediate surrounding area, and indirect service strikes that occur at a distance but send voltage

This regulation complements Article 120c, “Other Sexual Misconduct” of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), which prohibits the indecent viewing, visual recording or broadcasting of another person.

Anyone found to have violated the new regulation could be subject to court-martial or adverse administrative actions, such as nonjudicial punishment or administrative separation.

Navy COOL program, website updates announced

Navy Credentialing Opportunities On-Line (COOL) announced two new program changes and an added feature on its website, May 1.

A policy update replaced the minimum 12-month time of service requirement to use Navy COOL’s services, including possible funding, to earn civilian credentials. Sailors who have at least six months remaining on their current contracts are now authorized to pursue civilian licensing opportunities through Navy COOL. Chaplain Corps unveils new sexual assault recovery program

In a unique approach to assist sexual assault victims, the Navy Chief of Chaplains initiated a pilot for a personal resiliency retreat modeled after those offered by the Chaplains Religious Enrichment Development Operation (CREDO).

“In the last year, the Chaplain Corps designed a new retreat program for survivors of sexual assault.

It’s called ‘Hope to Healing’ (H2H),” Chief of Chaplains Rear Adm. Margaret Kibben said.

CREDO, led by chaplains in 11 regions around the world, offers workshops, seminars and retreats to inspire hope and improve spiritual well-being among Sailors, Marines, Coast Guardsmen and their families as well as DOD civilians.

“The H2H retreat differs from a personal resilience retreat... we have a target of instilling hope and healing, where the emphasis is placed on hope,” Navy chaplain and CREDO director for Navy Region MidAtlantic Cmdr. Jennifer Bowden said.

of chaplains, Fleet and Family Service Center, mental health care providers, and partnership with the Department of Navy Sexual Assault Prevention Office, the product evolved.”

After facilitating three successful pilots, Bowden explained the difference that a 72-hour weekend retreat can make.

“Hope takes us out of our experience and on the path to healing,” she said.

The program uses techniques such as counseling, prayer, and meditation as well as technology to help sexual assault survivors

reduce the feeling of hopelessness.

“I highly encourage any survivor to consider attending simply because it gives you a sense that you’re not alone,” Bowden said.

Chaplains who facilitate the H2H observe the group dynamics, log direct feedback from the participants, and survey all survivors to assess the successes of the program and how to improve it.

“Each element of the retreat is evaluated... using a hope scale at the beginning and at the end. The result of the third retreat survey

was 100 percent satisfaction, based on the Interactive Customer Evaluation (ICE),” Bowden said.

On the last day of the third pilot retreat, a new exercise was added that validated the impact of H2H. “I asked that all take a photo of the sunset from a different place, and later that evening I received a text and photo of a sunset from several participants saying, ‘we were thinking about how powerful the retreat was to us and how much you helped us,’” Bowden said.

It seemed more like a tech company or a global banking institution or the corporate headquarters of something really important.

I nearly choked on my uvula.

Pete tried to snap us out of our sticker shock by offering 60-month no-interest financing. This weekend only, of course. When this didn’t work, he led us directly to the economy section, where we spooned and flopped until we found a decent mattress in our price range.

I guess you could say, we slept our way to the bottom.

Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Hopper (DDG 70) arrived in Homer, Alaska for a scheduled port visit prior to their participation in Exercise Northern Edge 2017.

While in port, the crew of Hopper will have opportunities to participate in community service projects, experience local cuisine, and compete in sporting events, as well as explore Alaska’s culture and beauty, while on local excursions.

Northern Edge is a biennial training exercise conducted in the Joint PaciďŹ c Alaska Range Complex, which includes the area within the Gulf of Alaska, as well as land and airspace within the state.

Northern Edge includes participation from several commands, including Alaskan Command, U.S. PaciďŹ c Fleet, U.S. 3rd Fleet, Marine Corps Forces PaciďŹ c, U.S. Army PaciďŹ c, and others.

USS Decatur (DDG 73) was the last ship to visit Homer in June 2011, while O’Kane visited in June 2006 and USS Lake Champlain (CG 57) in July 2004. During Exercise Northern Edge 2015, approximately $13 million was brought into the state of Alaska due to the additional military personnel, support contracts, and port visit.

Hopper is a multi-mission surface combatant, capable of anti-air, anti-submarine,

and anti-surface warfare missions. It can operate independently or in support of carrier and expeditionary strike groups. Hopper is homeported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

U.S. 3rd Fleet leads naval forces in the PaciďŹ c and provides the realistic, relevant training necessary for an effective global Navy. U.S. 3rd Fleet constantly coordinates with U.S. 7th Fleet to plan and execute missions based on their complementary strengths to promote ongoing peace, security, and stability throughout the entire PaciďŹ c theater of operations.

The Navy announced Wednesday that the Senior Enlisted Academy (SEA) will streamline their course from 13 weeks to 11 by decreasing the distance learning portion as outlined in NAVADMIN 109/17.

These changes will add one SEA class per year and decrease class size, which

will provide more exibility and opportunity for qualiďŹ ed Sailors to attend.

The new SEA schedule will consist of seven weeks distance learning and three weeks in-residence in Newport, Rhode Island for the nine classes.

SEA reorganized the online and in-resident course topics and adjusted physical ďŹ tness training time to allow for more in-residence coursework.

Graduation from a service SEA is a prerequisite for promotion to master chief. SEA is the Navy’s professional military education for the senior enlisted force.

Well mannered staff member serves dual role at Corpus Christi Clinic

Finley Lewis is the youngest Naval Health Clinic (NHC) Corpus Christi team member sporting lieutenant bars—a notable fact since most Navy lieutenants are already in their mid to late 20s.

And although their hair isn’t generally gray, remarkably, Finley’s is completely silver!

So, just how young is Finley? Hint, he was born in March 2012.

But Finley’s birthday is not what really sets him apart from the other staff.

Honorary Lt. Finley Lewis is, in fact, an expertly trained silver Labrador retriever skilled at enhancing the quality of life, education and morale of patients, as well as NHC Corpus Christi staff.

As the ofďŹ cial NHC Corpus Christi facility dog, Finley reports to work each weekday, except Tuesdays and Thursdays when he enjoys special liberty. His purposeful gait while patrolling the facility’s hallways demonstrates his pride in the job, as well as his Navy Working Uniform (NWU) vest complete with lieutenant bars, command ID badge and call sign, “Happy Makerâ€?.

Finley’s handler, Pamela Lewis, explained that he was originally the family dog. “While stationed in Washington state, we decided on a Labrador retriever and the breeder let us have the pick of the litter,� Lewis said. “I was kneeling down looking at all of the 6-week-old puppies and all of a sudden he just pushes past all of them, gets right in front of me and throws himself on his back, paws in the air and my husband looks over and says, ‘Well, hello Finley!’ So he picked me and he came home with us.�

And with that surprise beginning, Finley joined the Lewis household. He enjoyed life as a pet and the Lewis family looked after all of his puppy and obedience training, as well as the completion of the Canine Good Citizen

(CGC) Program that earned him the prestige as a wellmannered dog.

In the summer of 2014, however, circumstances presented Finley with a new purpose.

In August, Lewis and her husband, a ight instructor, transferred to Training Squadron 35 (VT-35) at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi (NASCC). “Shortly after arriving here, Finley and I underwent six months service dog training together because of a disability I had previously learned that I had,â€? Lewis said.

Service dogs are individually trained to perform speciďŹ c tasks relative to varying disabilities.

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), an individual with a disability is entitled to a service dog to help them live their lives normally. The ADA protects disabled individuals by allowing them to bring their service dog with them to most places that the public is permitted, including restaurants, hotels, housing complexes, and even during air travel.

Lewis explained that she and Finley trained at In Dog We Trust, an organization in San Antonio rescuing trainable dogs for the disabled, wounded warriors (WW), and other individuals.

She underscored the importance for the handler and dog to train as a team in order to bond with each other and build trust, as well as practice commands uniquely structured for each particular disability. For example, service dogs paired with diabetics or individuals with PTSD (posttraumatic stress disorder) learn completely different instructions.

Service dog training was a “snap� for Finely. He was a perfect student and Lewis said that he was eager to begin his new role.

But after pairing up with Lewis as her service dog for nearly a year and a half, Finley’s life took another unexpected turn.

great to have one at the clinic?â&#x20AC;&#x2122; They were very open to the idea and then suddenly Capt. Valdes said, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Welcome to the team!â&#x20AC;&#x2122; After we left his ofďŹ ce I glanced toward Dr. Leonard thinking like, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;What just happened?!â&#x20AC;&#x2122; I had no idea that Finley and I were interviewing for a job.â&#x20AC;?

Facility dogs may be used in educational settings, physical therapy, and behavioral health to provide assistance with rehabilitation, emotional support, and suicide prevention.

In Finleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s case, his superb manners are a plus for getting people to feel at ease no matter which area he visits. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really neat is that when you go into a place like the pharmacy where people have been waiting and some are frustrated and annoyed, and in walks Finley and all of a sudden everyone lights up,â&#x20AC;? Lewis said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had patients tell me that they prefer to pick up their meds on the days that Finley works just so

that they can see him. When they see Finley they get off their phones and all of a sudden they are not so annoyed.

Or a lot of times after they have petted Finley they start telling me about the dog they used to have and then theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll start talking to each other. So by the time I leave, strangers that werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even looking at each other are now interacting with each other.â&#x20AC;?

Besides being an ideal handler, Lewis takes pride in her self-appointed role as a service dog ambassador. Navy Surgeon General visits Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay

Vice Adm. Forrest Faison, Navy surgeon general and chief, U.S. Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, visited U.S. Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay (NHGB).

This was Faison’s first visit to NHGB and included breakfast with junior Sailors, tours of facilities, leadership briefings, and an all-hands call.

“If you don’t remember anything else I say today, I want you to remember these two words: thank you,” Faison said. “It is an honor and a privilege to serve with you in the most highly trained, educated and specialized Navy in our nation’s history.”

As evidence, Faison discussed the greater than 90 percent survival rate for survivable combat injuries,

which is unprecedented in the history of military medicine. He said several studies indicate the quality of care in the military health care system is as good, if not better, than some of the highest regarded institutions in the nation.

Not resting on the laurels achieved, Faison discussed continuing improvements, including changing the model in how health care is provided. These new initiatives are geared to be more convenient, offer a better experience of care, and utilize improved technology. He said these are areas identified as very important to millennial service members, a very large percentage of force.

Faison also informed the staff of three expectations he has of all staff members. His list included to be worthy of the trust instilled in you, be worthy of the uniform you wear, and be worthy of the

privilege of leadership.

Before closing, Faison recognized four staff members by presenting them with coins for their outstanding service.

Faison assumed duties as the Navy’s 38th surgeon general on Dec. 15, 2015. He previously served as the Navy’s deputy surgeon general and deputy chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery.

Hampton Roads news station hosts internship for Sailors

News 3 (WTKR) from the Hampton Roads metropolitan district opened their doors to Navy Mass Communication Specialists to join their team for two weeks as job shadows.

“I love it, that’s why I started the program,” News Team 3 news director Ryan Minnaugh said. “I really hope there’s a give and take on both sides. I hope people combine together and share the things that are important to each other. There’s a different structure and perspective between our professions, and I am proud of this program because I think it is helpful to both sides.”

The collaboration between the civilian and military journalists in the area helps both to accurately inform their shared audience with relevant and intriguing stories.

“It’s been nice,” Minnaugh said. “We would miss out on good stories unless we have someone that reaches out like Cmdr. Dave Hecht. We get pitched a lot of stories from the Navy, like carrier returns or new technologies. It impacts so many people that live here.”

News 3 frequently covers military events such as deployments, homecomings, technologies and innovations, and service members’ involvement in the community. This program allows a reciprocal relationship, in which the team gets to see the personal side of service members.

“The Sailors are definitely

eager to learn, and they always ask questions because they want know what’s going on,” News Team 3 photojournalist Carlos Melgarejo said. “How things work here and how they can apply the knowledge they gain here to their jobs in the Navy.

They are very involved and very friendly. I learned a lot about the Sailors, like their

lifestyles, where they come from, and how they have to figure out how to accommodate their lifestyles to their work. They all have a story, homes and families. It feels great.”

For many Sailors, this program is their first glimpse at a professional civilian enterprise. While observation alone could provide insight

into how the industries differ, the Sailors also get involved in the news gathering and reporting process, thereby enhancing their skills and gaining powerful contacts through networking.

“Technically, you are a job shadow for two weeks, so our idea was to get it so people could see how a lot of what you already learned could be applied here or at another job,” Minnaugh said.

The Navy, like any industry has its own methods for achieving its goals. The minutia that distinguishes civilian professionals can be daunting for Sailors.

“I learned so much,” Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Carter Denton said.

“I feel more prepared for my career now. Everyone there was willing to teach me about their side. The Navy taught me all the technical details of writing, photography and video, but it was enlightening to see how civilians do it.”

Sailors are encouraged to jump right in on the action.

The program allows participants to immerse themselves in whichever field most interests them.

“This is very hands on, and we take the Sailors out in the field or in the studio,” Melgarejo said. “They get to see

all the stress and everything that goes on in the newsroom when things happen. We get breaking news. Denton was with us, he got to see how we handle that. He was there freezing with us, and live with what we do here. He even participated in the news cast as well. He was great.”

A program of this nature is a vehicle for Sailor success.

They can get a glimpse of the industry outside the Navy and therefore make an informed decision about where they want their career to go. If they decide to separate after their current enlistment, they already have contacts in the industry.

“It’s a fun partnership. We met through a mutual respect of both businesses because we are both trying to find a better way to communicate and tell stories,” Minnaugh said. “There has been so much that we are able to accomplish and [Cmdr. Dave Hecht] and I are both open to doing more partnerships in the future.”

Long-Distance parenting Raising kids from across the country

For Sailors with families, one of the best things about being in port is going home every day to spend time with the ones they love. And although the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) is in port, this is not the case for all of its crewmembers.

Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Fuel) 2nd Class Alan Williams is one of these people. Williams has two children who live with his ex-wife in California. When he gets off work however, he drives to his home in Newport News, Virginia; 2,000 miles away from his children.

He has two boys, ages two and three. Because of his duties, Williams misses birthdays, holidays and special occasions with his children. He is in the process of moving his children to the east coast; but until then, the strain of separation affects him and his children.

“I miss my kids,” Williams said.

Although his children are young, studies from the National Center for Children in Poverty have shown that even toddlers and babies can sense the change in the routine of their daily lives when a parent is away. The children can become more irritable, develop sleep problems or frequently throw temper tantrums.

There are things that parents can do to reduce the tension caused by separation. Encouraging honest discussions with children about their emotions is important for military parents.

These discussions can solve problems and lead to better communication. Using any available means of communication, even writing letters, helps military children cope with the separation.

Williams said he tries to call and FaceTime his kids as much as possible. He jokes and tries to make them laugh to alleviate the stress of being so far away.

Even if Sailors do not have children, they can show their support for those who do in multiple ways. Asking if that parent needs any help, cooking them a meal, or even volunteering to babysit once in a while can tremendously help military families.

People can also show their support for military children during April’s Month of the Military Child, and by wearing purple people can raise awareness for the struggles military children face every day.

Even though being separated from his kids is a struggle, Williams gains motivation to do his job from his situation.

“I don’t want my kids to have to struggle, he said. My motivation is to maintain my job so I can maintain a paycheck for them, so they can have the things they want and have the things they need.”

Williams said he never wants his kids to have to worry about having food on the table or a roof over their head.

He also said the Navy has taught him the value of respect, and he plans to pass this lesson along to his children as they grow up.

The Navy offers many programs for people in situations similar to Williams who live near military installations, such as youth programs, child development centers, the Exceptional Family Member

Program (EFMP), and the School Liaison Program (SLP).

Youth and teen centers provide sports and activities for children up to 18 years old in a fun, safe environment, said Kelsey Leuzinger, ombudsman for Navy Recruiting Command Headquarters. The EFMP is designed to assist any special needs children of service members and their families by providing assistance and equipment such as wheelchairs and hearing aids. The SLP is for any service member who needs assistance in deciding in which school to place their child after moving.

Also, Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC), and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) are some of the services offered to military families and their children.

The FFSC offers numerous classes, including new parent support and daddy boot camp™ for news dads. And MWR has new events and programs offered for families and children monthly.

Inside the General Electric warehouse in Suffolk, Virginia, a group of junior enlisted Sailors and senior officers attached to the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) attended Lean Six Sigma Green Belt training to learn ways to improve naval practices.

The training is a week long, and the students simulate how to run a small corporation. Throughout the class, students learn business tools and conduct simulations to see how those practices work. By the end of the class, students get to see what they have learned and how those lessons can be used to improve daily operations.

“Lean Six Sigma are tools used in the civilian sector that the Navy has adopted to go through and evaluate how processes work throughout the Navy, and systematically make them better,” Aviation Electronics Technician 1st Class Robert Rubano said. “The Navy decided to use this training to improve workflow due to changes

that have occurred over the years.”

Now that George Washington is going through the refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) process, this new training can improve procedures.

“We’ve looked into a few processes and analyzed the data from prior ships that went into the shipyards on how they were doing it,” Rubano said. “We took a lot of their lessons learned and implemented new processes on our ship to prevent us from going down some of those paths. We want to be a little more efficient going into the Shipboard Consolidated Offload and Outfitting Plan (SCOOP) phase, and more efficient off-loading equipment and inventorying it. Where other ships may have lost inventory or lost control of things, we want to head that off using Lean Six Sigma.”

The class is set up to give Sailors of all ranks new skills to improve how they work.

Junior Sailors work side-byside with senior Sailors to learn skills needed to run a successful corporation.

“The junior Sailors are able to come in with a fresh

mind and bring a new perspective to tasks,” Rubano said. “Whereas senior Sailors have more of a blackand-white view and say ‘If that’s how we have to do it, then that’s how we will do it.’

Having both together allows both parties to learn how to think outside the box and get the process completed.”

The Lean Six Sigma Green Belt program can be used to help Sailors with more than just improving Navy procedures.

“This class is important to help Sailors learn how to organize their office and give a new perspective on how to improve day-to-day operations,” Chief Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) Terrell Jones said. “This is something Sailors can use in their personal life and their Navy life. The tools you learn can stay with you forever. It’s more than just a class, you learn life skills.”

Navy celebrates 2017 Asian American, Pacific Islander Heritage Month From Chief of Naval Personnel Public Affairs WASHINGTON

The Navy joins the nation in celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month throughout May. ALNAV 006/17 encourages participation in all the heritage celebrations and special observances throughout the year. This year, Navy commands are encouraged to celebrate and reflect on the

theme “Unite Our Voices by Speaking Together.”

“It is an honor and a privilege to serve with such a diverse group of officers and enlisted personnel who make up our Navy,” said Rear Adm. Bette Bolivar, a Hawaiianborn Filipino and the 40th commander of Navy Region Southeast in Jacksonville, Florida. “I’m blessed at the opportunities the Navy has given me, and I’m thankful to celebrate this month with my

fellow Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.”

There are 24,743 Asian American and Pacific Islander Sailors currently serving as part of One Navy Team, including eight admirals, 659 master chief and senior chief petty officers and 318 officers. These Sailors represent more than 56 ethnic groups, speaking over 100 languages from Asia and the Pacific Islands, living in the United States.

Asian American and Pacific Islanders represent 11.7 percent of the Navy civilian workforce and 3.2 percent of Senior Executive Service members. “Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have a proud history,” Bolivar said.

“It’s a history of service.

We’re dedicated not only to our heritage, but also to our Navy; to be a shining example of the core values that guide us: honor, courage and commitment.”

Asian American and Pacific Islanders of various nationalities and ancestry have been serving in the Navy since the early 19th century. The rich history of these cultures, their struggles against adversity to achieve equality, significant contributions to the American experience and the opportunity to build the foundation for a bright future are made reality by some great leaders who share the same heritage.

This why you can see some flashes at outlets or empty light fixtures when there is a direct lightning strike on your house. This is also why your television or your other favorite electronic gear gets taken out during a direct strike to your home, as there is no way to prevent the voltage from a direct strike from traveling down every available pathway.

Q: What about for indirect service strikes?

A: The electrical power that feeds the building comes from a transformer that is protected by a surge protection device (SPD). This SPD protects the transformer and what is down the line from the transformer (like your house), from voltage surges. If lightning hits on or near the power line a good distant from your building the lightning will travel down the power lines, losing current as it travels. When the lightning hits the transformer’s SPD, it will shut down the transformer when it detects the current overload. This will protect your building against lightning strikes on or near power lines a distance away from your house, depending on the relative distance and intensity of the lightning strike.

Q: Many people utilize surge protectors to add another layer of protection between their device and the electrical outlets in their home. How do these devices work and what level of protection can they offer?

A: Personal surge protectors work by creating a gap in the line with the intention of stopping current from traveling down the line when the device senses an overcurrent situation. This gap is a small pocket of air, sometimes as small as one inch across.

Lightning, which already has traveled many miles from the sky to the ground, can easily jump the small gap created by

the surge protector and continue into any device that is plugged into the surge protector if the strike occurs close enough to the residency or has enough current to overwhelm the device.

Sailors to pursue credentials based on their education Continued from B1 qualified Sailors.

“The time-in-service change allows Sailors to pursue credentials throughout their military life cycle, from completion of technical training until they become eligible for transition opportunities,” Navy’s voluntary education service chief Jim Johnson said.

Navy COOL also announced a pilot program to fund credentials aligned with academic degrees or certificates. Until now, COOL services have assisted with providing credentialing opportunities based on the Sailor’s enlisted rating, officer designator or their work in a collateral duty or out-of-rating assignment. The update allows Sailors to pursue credentials based on their education, even if their degree or academic certification does not align with their military occupation.

“Aligning credentials with formal education leverages the best attributes of both developmental paths, leading to a better-rounded Sailor,” Johnson said. “To ensure success, Sailors should continue preparing for certification exams aligned to their education as they do for any other Navy COOL opportunities.”

In an effort to keep Navy COOL websites up-todate with industry trends and practices, all Department of the Navy (DON) COOL websites, including Navy COOL, Marine Corps COOL and DON Civilian COOL, now include a live chat feature. The service allows users to communicate directly with Navy COOL staff in real time. A staff member is available to answer questions about the program between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Central Standard Time.

“Most questions can be addressed via a simple chat while surfing the website,” Navy COOL program director Keith Boring said. “Adding chat to the COOL website benefits the Sailors who do not desire to phone the Navy’s Credentialing Program via long-distance or write a lengthy email. This new feature provides us with expanded capabilities to assist Sailors throughout the world.”

Navy COOL provides information about licenses and certifications applicable to all Navy occupations, offering resources and funding to help Sailors gain appropriate civilian desired, and in many cases required, credentials.

Carolina ’que is king, is a bold move. So do tell what style of ’que will you be serving?

A. “Back in the day, Carolina was your vinegar based.

You go into Texas, no sauce, dry rub, sauce on the side.

Kansas City, you get that sweet sauce. ... What’s happening, people are starting to

take an appreciation of barbecue from a lot of different places. ... So we do a variety.

We do dry rub, we do Texas.

We do brisket and pork. And we give you a variety of sauces. So we don’t set it to just one way.

“When you come to a city, an area like Norfolk, and all these folks, blue collar, mili-

tary, overseas, a melting pot of people, and money is precious, you have to make sure we do our barbecue right.”

Q. You’re no stranger to the back of the house, having cooked and washed dishes, too. Once the restaurant is open, will you stop by now and again to cook, take a turn in the

dish pit or just hang out?

A. “Well the dish pit’s my specialty. That’s where all chefs learn; that’s where we all started,” he joked, then added, “Oh, without question ... to keep the vibe and the energy with the team. This is what I said to the team today. ‘Everybody makes food.

This is beyond food. This is an experience. People come in here. Money’s tight. The opportunity to go out ... is limited. So when they do that, we’ve got to make sure we deliver.’ ” He tells them, “When I’m not here, you’re me.”

Q. How was the food you had while filming here?

A. “Look at all the restaurants you guys got. You guys are a restaurant empire.

You have phenomenal food.

Do you know how hard it is to pick six locations out of eight? It’s really tough.

We’ve got a nice eclectic mix of restaurants. ... It’s going to make Norfolk and Virginia Beach look really good.”

The Hampton Roads Naval Museum (HRNM) presented a World War I commemorative panel to Naval Weapons Station Yorktown in the museumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s World War I gallery on May 2 to commemorate the centennial of the arrival of U.S. Navy destroyers in Europe.

The staff at Hampton Roads Naval Museum researched and designed the panel as part of the Naval History and Heritage Commandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s commemoration of World War I. The Director of Naval History Rear Admi-

ral Samuel Cox, USN (Ret.) formally presented the panel to Captain Matthew Kosnar, the commanding ofďŹ cer of Naval Weapons Station Yorktown.

Destroyer Force, Division Eight, of the Atlantic Fleet was created in response to Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s declaration of war on Germany on April 2, 1917, and deployed from the York River shortly after.

Commanded by Joseph K. Taussig, the ďŹ&#x201A;eet consisted of USS Wadsworth, USS Porter, USS Tucker and USS Jacob Jones. They were the ďŹ rst group of American Destroyers sent abroad in WWI.

The ďŹ&#x201A;eet arrived off Queenstown, Ireland, on May 4 and protected commerce near the coasts of Great Britain and France.

Monthly Therapeutic Arts Events for caregivers offered at the Hampton VA medical center From Tidewater Arts Outreach

Each month in 2017, Tidewater Arts Outreach will present a free, monthly arts session for Hampton Roads military caregivers at the Hampton VA Medical Center. The two-hour sessions are typically held on the third Tuesday of each month and feature a variety of hands-on arts activities, including visual arts, songwriting, drumming, drama and creative writing.

These events are participatory and designed to increase military caregiversâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; access to the joy and healing power of the arts. Workshop goals include stress reduction, socialization and creative selfexpression.

The next topic, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Songwriting with Caregiversâ&#x20AC;? will be presented in a two-session series, 6-8 p.m., May 16 and June 20, in the activity room of Building 83 (Education and Training) at the Hampton VA Medical Center.

Military caregivers are encouraged, but not required, to attend both sessions of series.

During the ďŹ rst session of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Songwriting with Caregivers,â&#x20AC;? professional songwriter/educator Tina Micula will collaborate with military caregivers using the theme â&#x20AC;&#x153;Unsung Heroes.â&#x20AC;? The group will generate lyrics, rhymes and a melody. Each participantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ideas and contributions will be incorporated into an original song.

During the second session, on June 20, military caregivers will sing and record the lyrics of their original song.

Accessibility is an art form for Sandler Center Foundation

Think of Access the Arts as a grand jete on the local philanthropic stage. This year alone, the program will make the leap to almost 12,000 Hampton Roads students, arching the gap between arts and affordability.

Attending free of charge, 48 Title I schools were able to take advantage of a rich variety of cultural offerings, including recent lecture demonstrations by Richmond Ballet, the State Ballet of Virginia.

The program is the work of the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts Foundation, and is 7 years old. Executive Director Lisa Baehre said Access the Arts has provided attendance in the past six years for some 25,000 students. This year’s numbers of schools responding to their invitation were larger than usual, which is cause for celebration.

“We want to be a model for the nation,” she said. “Arts are a critical element of culture, understanding who we are, and we’re dedicated to reaching all Hampton Roads students, regardless of financial considerations.”

Access the Arts provides educationally themed, matinee arts opportunities for underserved populations in Title I schools, as designated by the Virginia Department of Education.

According to Christine Layne, education coordinator for the Sandler Center, there are more than 100 schools in Hampton Roads that fit the Title I criteria,

with more than 50 percent of the population receiving free or reduced lunches.

“We target and sponsor those schools,” she said, noting they will serve students from all of Virginia Beach’s and Chesapeake’s Title I schools this year. “We also provide educational offerings through partnerships with Virginia Arts Festival.”

Layne said the foundation provides arts experiences across dance, music and theater. “This is our first year partnering with Richmond Ballet, and we are thrilled with their involvement.”

Richmond Ballet’s educational outreach coordinator Tracie Morin said the performance extends into the classroom.

“Our educational packet has lesson ideas in line with

SOL objectives; we help teachers prepare their students for the demonstration and also provide follow-up material,” she said. Typical packets include reading, basic math, story sequencing, puzzles and word challenges.

Eight area schools attended Richmond Ballet’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream” at the Sandler Center, including two Virginia Beach elementary schools: Brookwood and Lynnhaven.

An additional seven schools enjoyed visits from the ballet, reaching a total of 3,165 students.

“The arts win when we extend accessibility to all children,” said Baehre, noting it is their goal to bring literacy to life on the main stage.

“By augmenting our on-site

programs with on-the-road experiences, we provide increased exposure and create invitations for children to find their places in the arts world, to envision futures where they contribute as artists, art professionals or audiences.”

Lynnhaven first-grader Elizabeth Gonzalez might be one of them. “I liked their pointe shoes,” she said, adding that she wants to try ballet class. “I’m going to ask my mom.”

The man, the myth, the legend that is Kris Kristofferson will perform at 7 p.m., May 14, at the Harrison Opera House in Norfolk.

Heralded by many as an artist’s artist, Kristofferson is a three-time Grammy award winner, and has recorded 29 albums, including three with pals Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings as part of the Highwaymen.

On this particular one-man, 90-minute show, the 80-year-old brings his acoustic guitar and harmonica as well as his wit, wisdom and his unique vocal style.

The show promises to be filled with familiar songs that have endeared him to fans. Kristofferson’s

two 14-song, 45-minute sets include many of the songs that defined a generation or two, including his signature “Me and Bobby McGee,” as well as “Help Me Make it Through the Night,” “Loving Her Was Easier (Than Anything I’ll Ever Do Again)” and “For the Good Times.”

Kristofferson was born in Texas and raised in a military family. A Golden Gloves boxer, he studied creative writing at Pomona College in California. He earned a Rhodes scholarship to study literature at Oxford, where he boxed, played rugby and continued to write songs.

After graduating from Oxford, Kristofferson served in the Army as an Airborne Ranger helicopter pilot and achieved the rank of Captain.

Inspired by songwriters like Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash, Kristofferson turned down an assignment

to teach at West Point,and in 1965, he moved to Nashville to pursue his love for music and writing.

In his biography on his website, Kristofferson recalls, “For guys like me, Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson were two gods we worshipped. Then Willie and I got to be best friends. I came from a position of idolizing him to finding out he’s the funniest son of a byou could be around.”

After a rough start in Nashville with many struggles, trials and tribulations, Kristofferson started to achieve success as a country songwriter at the start of the 1970s. By 1987, it was estimated that more than 450 artists had recorded Kristofferson’s compositions.

Kristofferson’s rugged good looks and success as a performer led to a successful career as a film actor. In 1977, he won a Golden Globe

Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Bobby Yamashita became the 2017 U.S. Grappling World Team Trials Gi Senior Men 77-kilogram champion in Las Vegas.

Yamashita competed in a round-robin format and the accolade qualifies him as a current USA Grappling world team member.

“My goal and all of my team [members’ goals are] to be Olympic [champions],” Yamashita said. “Unfortunately I didn’t make the world team trials [in Greco-Roman wrestling], but thankfully [USA Wrestling provided the opportunity to compete for a spot on a world team in] gi and no-gi grappling.

Yamashita is currently an All-Navy wrestler, at 71 kilograms in Greco-Roman wrestling, for six years and has already competed internationally as an Armed Forces Judoka at four Military World Games in India, Brazil, Kazakhstan and South Korea.

Upon finding out there was a chance to compete for a world team spot at the same venue as the world team trials, Chief Navy Diver Ale Delapeña, All-Navy Wrestling head coach told Ya-

mashita, “hey let’s go for it,” according to Yamashita. “I just love combat, especially [the World Military Games], I feel like I’m at the Olympics with all of the countries [participating], opening ceremonies and different sports [it’s just] incredible.”

Yamashita credits his extensive Judo background for his victory, already being accustomed to practicing and competing in the gi, which is a cotton uniform comprised of a heavy jacket, twill pants and tied closed with a belt that is wrapped and knotted.

Yamashita fought through his first opponent’s guard to finish with an arm-bar, while he threw his final opponent, whom he has a history competing with, with a Tai-Otoshi and immediately finished the match with a lapel choke.

“Yeah, I faced [Mike Kelley] twice before and he beat me in no-gi. Better advantage for me, I do judo, I got a nice throw and thankfully, I got a nice choke. [In the gi I] definitely, I feel comfortable and relaxed, especially when we’re natural so I just told myself ‘work my footwork and then get him with the big throws.’”
