Navy SEAL dies after parachute malfunction in New Jersey From Navy Region MidAtlantic Public Affairs NEW YORK

Special Operator 1st Class Remington J. Peters, of Colorado, a member of the U.S. Navy’s elite parachute team, the Leap Frogs,

was pronounced dead Sunday, May 28 at 1:10 p.m. after his parachute malfunctioned and he landed in the water adjacent to Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey during an airborne demonstration for New York Fleet Week.

Peters was retrieved immediately by the U.S. Coast Guard personnel who were specifically standing by in vessels to support the event and transported to Jersey City Medical Center for care. “Our hearts and prayers

Five U.S. Navy ships, four U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) Yard Patrol boats (YPs), two U.S. Coast Guard cutters (USCGC) and one Royal Canadian Navy ship arrived in the New York Harbor May 24 to participate in the 2017 Fleet Week New York Parade of Ships. Approximately 3,700 Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen will participate this year.

Two Sailors from the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) were walking through Times Square the moment a man drove his vehicle through a crowd of pedestrians, May 19. Airman David Barba and Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Fuels) 3rd Class Andrew Miller, were in front of a Walgreens on 42nd Street and 7th Avenue when Richard Rojas careened his vehicle into the crowded sidewalk, killing and injuring those in his path until his vehicle crashed three and a half blocks later. “There were people going over the car, under the car and people getting thrown off of the road,” Barba said. “It was ruthless, and the driver just kept speeding up. The sound of the engine just kept getting louder and louder.
